Title: Word.16 The Power of Fire, the Power of Numbers, the Power of Pinta
Insert: There is just as much individuality
as there are lives.
[Feels a little better, man.]
Monoko: You must be so glad.
You're glad, right, Taou-chan?
SFX: DOROROH DOROH
Monoko: Hehe... When I get really happy
my stomach gets empty.
SFX: DOROROON DORORON
Monoko: The potato field was around here, wasn't it?
Uuh... The ground is still hot.
even the potatoes have turned black, huh......?
Monoko: I guess in the fire
the potatoes got destroyed, too, huh?
I probably can't eat this, huh?
SFX: HOKA HOKA (Heat)
SFX: SUN SUN SUN SUN (Sniffing)
SFX: HOKU HOKU
Jeek: Hey, Tarouza.
What did Monoko just say there?
Monoko: It's sooo good.
Both: The potatoes
are super tasty.
Narration: The baked potato that the gluttonous Monoko discovered soon spread throughout the village.
As well as
SFX: HOKA HOKA
Narration: fried pumpkin,
SFX: HOKA HOKA
Narration: and that if you pulled back the burned leaves of cabbage, the inside was steamy and sweet.
Though there were also things that were so hot they would burn animals' toungues.
Narration: Everyone was moved by those new flavors.
Animals: Tarouza, do you think you could make a fire?
Jyu could do it, so maybe you could, too?
Monoko: I wanna eat baked potato again.
We still haven't found a way to kill a fire!!
We need to find that first, or else the forest will be destroyed again!!
And if Jyu comes back and does it again, everyone will be killed by the fire!
Tarou: Even though they went through all that before...
Monoko: But Taro-chan,
if fire to makes potatoes and stuff this delicious,
then maybe meat-eating animals will be able to eat plants.
Tarou: She has a point......
maybe if we used fire to make something even tastier than meat...
Jyu: So the plant eating animals can eat whatever they want,
but the meat eating animals aren't allowed to eat meat?!
What kind of friendliness is that?!
How could you not feel bad for the meat-eating animals?!
can I really make that with fire?
Tarou: Even if we used fire, plants are plants.
To do something like make them satisfy meat-eating animals...
I have a feeling there's "something else" we'd need...
No! I have to try.
I have to!
Tarou: The fire made the soil harder.
SFX: KON KON
Tarou: And made rocks break.
"Fire" has a mountain of powers in it.
Tarou: it's scary, but.....
I want to control "fire" as well!!!
Beaver: Heey! Tatouzaaaa! Heeey!!
Beaver: I found somethiiiing!!
Here, take a good look at the bridge that was burned by the fire!
Beaver: Just as I expected.
You've already figured it out, haven't you?
The bottoms of the trees that are submerged in the water weren't destroyed by the fire!!
Beaver: I saw it!
When the parts of the tree that were on fire fell into the river, the fire disappeared!!
They let out this scream that sounded like JUOOOOOOOOH!
A fire can be killed with water!!!
Tarouza: Okay, okay! Now we can use fire!!
Great, boy! Now I'll also make...
"Fire"... how do I make it come out?
Well, we can figure that out later. First, we need to rebuild the village!
Staring with the bridge!!
Tarou: There're no plants left in the village now that Jyu destroyed it with fire.
First, we'll make a bridge
and move our home to the forest on the other side of the river.
SFX: KAKA KAKAKA KAKA
SFX: DON DON KAN
Tarou: The boars will plow this dead field
so we can plant seeds in it again.
Ororon: What?! If we spread seeds here, they'll grow?!
Tarou: Well, I don't know for sure yet...
Tarou: But when animals and bugs die on top of soil,
the corpses become nutrients for that soil, don't they?
So the grasses and trees killed by the fire
might also become nutrients for this ground so some big potatoes could grow from it.
But either way, leaving it like this would be a waste.
I kinda feel bad for it.
Ororon: I see.
Okay, gotcha. We'll give it a try!
Tarou: And I'm hoping all of the other animals will help out in their own way!!
We did it!
SFX: ZORO ZORO
Beaver: I'd like one more pridge.
Tarou: Yeah, you're right.
I'll try writing down how many trees we'll need.
SFX: KARI KARI KARI KARI KARI (Scratching)
Maybe this will work?
Llamas: Oiiiiiss! Tarouzaaaa!!
Box: Llama Cheif
SFX: TAH TAH TAH TAH TAH
Tarou: Hey, Oiss!
Oiss: Tarouza, have you been able to make another fire yet?
I wanna eat somma those warm cabbages.
Tarou: Sorry, I haven't been able to yet.
I actually just invented these things.
Oiss: What's that?
Tarou: Yeah. They're symbols to represent how many of something there is.
Oiss: How many......?
What do you mean by that?
Tarou: Oh right... I guess llamas don't know about that sorta thing.
Though a few animals do use that.
This is one.
This is two.
Oisss: I see. So I am "one".
And if you count Zarusoba, it makes "two".
T/N: Likely, this name comes from "soba" as in "buckwheat noodles". Zarusoba is a kind of soba served on a bamboo draining basket.
Tarou: Yeah, that's right.
When we were making the bridge, it was hard to communicate how many trees we needed.
So I made these symbols, numbers, in order to make it easier.
Tarou: From this side, they're...
Anyhow, for now
I just made as many numbers as I have fingers.
Oiss: I see... So it's not just the amounts of 1 and 2. You decided on an order, huh?
These are an incredible invention, Tarouza.
SFX: SU MOSA
Oiss: I'm sure these numbers and their meanings will save the lives of many animals.
SFX: CHICHICHI CHICHI
Tanuki: KYAAAAA!! Help uuuuuuuuuuuus!!!
Small Tanuki: Monny! He's catching up!!
I'll fight him, you run!!
Mom: Souta, you idiot! I can't just leave you!
Run as fast as you can!!
Cat: Now I'll help myself to two meals at ooooonce!!!
SFX: BASAAAAA DAKADAH DAKADAH DAKADAH
Oiss: THis is some ni~~~~ce scenery, i~~~sn't it?!!
Oiss: Jump out, number 1--------!!
Oiss: Jump out, number 2--------!!
Oiss: Jump out, number 3--------!!
Oiss: Jump out, number 4--------!!
Handwritten: 4 3 2 1
5 6 7 8
Oiss: Take caaare!!!
SFX: TAH TAH TAH TAH TAH
Mom: Th.. Thank you.
It's just the power of numbers.
Tarou: That's not how you use them...
SFX: MEKI MEKI MEKI
SFX: ZUN ZUN
SFX: HYURURU HYURURU
Tanuki: Hey, Tarouza, you're back?!
Dengo: What's that long-necked this?!
Tarou: It's my first time seeing one, too!!
Piman: Hmph. Do not feat that animal.
Piman: Though it has a long neck, its legs are slender so it has poor balance.
And if you look closely, it has long eyelashes and it has the face of an idiot.
Dengo: Piman is full of himself because he saw that long-necked thing eating plants.
Monoko: I see. If it doesn't eat meat, then we don't have to worried about being eaten.
Dengo: And it doesn't understand his cry, so he can say all he wants.
Piman: Hey, chicken!! Come get me, you chicken!!
Okay, got it, Kurokagi!
Tarou: Kurokagi said that it's a pretty strong animal!!
SFX: KURU (turn)
Tarou: Be careful, everyone!!
SFX: DON DON DON
SFX: MEKI MEKI MEKI MEKI
Piman took a hit like this...?
SFX: KURU (turn)
SFX: TATTAKA TATTAKA TATTAKA
SFX: GAH GAGAN
Animals: Uooh! Our trees we're using for the bridge!!
Momou: Dammit!! If we leave that thing alone, it'll destroy the bridge we already made!!
Deer: We're gonna fight, too!!!
Boars: Aim for its legs!! With thin legs like that, they've got to be a weak point!!!
SFX: BABAH BABABA
Tarou: Everyone, wait!!!
That animal is still just a child!!!
Tarou: It just got lost
and is running around being he's scared!!
Tarou: Can you... understand my cry?
Okay! If you quiet down, no one will be mean to you!!
So calm down!!
Senseiiiii?!! Where are yoooou?!!
I wanna go back to Mama~~~~~!!!
SFX: CHIRA CHIRA CHIRA
Tarou: First, you should
say you're sorry to Piman for hitting him.
Piman: Don't worry about it. I know he's just a kid.
Anyhow, how'd this guy get lost?
This child is part of a species called giraffes, and his name is Pinta.
He was in a group of children before,
but he got separated went he went exploring.
Momou: I see.
Then what do we do now?
Do we leave him in the village?
Tarou: No, he's still just a kid.
If he has a mom,
Tarou: I want to bring him back to her.
Pinta: Really, Tarouza?!
Tarou: But you'll have to wait a little while.
Tarou: Rebuilding the village takes priority for us.
I've got to think of a ways to bring more water into the village.
Pinta: Water?! Who cares about water!!
I wanna see Mama again now!!
Tarou: But this bad guy named Jyu might come back and destroy the village and the fields with fire.
We need to rebuild the village so we can kill that fire with water.
SFX: GIRI GIRI GIRI
Momou: Water, huh?
But I guess we can't add more rivers...
know a place there's lots of water!
Pinta: Water as far as your eyes can see.
Tarou: As far as your eyes can see?!
Even from your eyes on your long neck?
Like as much water as their is soil in that mountain?
Sensei calls it the "ocean".
Pinta: The border between the ocean and the land is all sand.
The water... comes in and out, like this.
It moves like a living thing.
And there are these flowers called coral that grow in the wat er.
SFX: DOKI DOKI DOKI (Heartbeat)
Pinta: And there are fish that swim in it that are bigger than elephants.
Bigger than an elephant......?
SFX: DOKI DOKI DOKI
Pinta: Let's go to the ocean, Tarouza.
We'll visit on the way to going to Mama.
SFX: UZU UZU (Itching to go)
Momou: Tarouza, go to the ocean. Leave the village to us.
Moutarou: Hey, hey! If there are mountains of water there, then there's no way he can bring it back!
Tarou: Yeah. You have a point, but......
if I can figure out why there's so much water there,
maybe I can make use of that in this village.
Pinta: Then it's settled.
Box: One week later.
Guys: Okay, let's get going!
Tarou: Take care while we're gone, everybody!
Momou: Got it! It hurts to have Kurokagi going, too, but
with Jeek and us bulls here, we can safely protect the village.
Mamagon: Hey, Tarouza-chan!!
Tarou: Hm? Mamagon?
Mamagon: Would you take our boy along with you?
T/N: If you're not aware, Umagon is a character from Konjiki no Gash!! He's a horse demon that makes sheep sounds.
Tarou: I dunno about this...
This could be a dangerous trip.
Monoko: Oh, it's fine, isn't it? If worst comes to worst, horses are quick on their feet.
You'll also carry some supplies?
Pinta: What're you doing, Tarouza?!
You're so slow! Hurry up! Hurry up!!
Tarouza: He sure is excited to see his mom again......
I'm actually excited, too.
This is probably gonna be the farthest I've ever gone.
I'll bet I'll pick up some new fruits and seeds, too.
Also, I've got to be careful of scary animals.
And the ocean......
Whale: So that child
Whale: I feel this is a bit early, but......
this is probably fate.

Elephant Parent and Child Edition
Raiku: NAHA NAHA
Here's some more of my memories of Africa.
I saw a lot of wild animals moving together as parent and child. It was lots of fun.
There was an elephant parent and child
The adult elephant would use its long trunks to wrap around grass at their feet and rip it up.
Handwritten: It would cut the roots of the grass with a leg-sweep.
Raiku: Then it would chow down on the grass.
Handwritten: Yum! Ah, so good!!
Raiku: But the baby elephant still couldn't use its trunk that well,
so when they'd wrap their trunks around the grass, it would slip out.
SFX: SURU (Slip)
Raiku: No matter how many times it would try, it couldn't get the hang of it.
SFX: SURU SURU
Raiku: Then it realized its mamma elephant was getting far away.
Then it ran to catch up in a panic.
Kept moving forward without turning back.
Raiku: They really are similar
to their fellow animals, humans.
