Johann and Bertha

Well, this was a nice little story. Besides the freezing to death part. I'm almost done with this volume now, basically. So I'm gonna try to do that. Like, finish. Before too long. The rest doesn't look TOO hard.

Title: Chapter 21
Johann and Bertha
Page 78:
Narration: 2 days after the attack on the barrier.
St. Gotthard Pass, North Side.
One of the Three Forest Cantons, Uri.
A mountain village nearby the ridge, Andermatt.
Page 79:
Guy: GUMUUU
GUWAUO
Woman: I wonder what the reason is.
It seems like there's a big difference in the size of the injuries from person to person.
What about you?
Guy: Er, well...
The thing is..........
Page 80:
SFX: BARIIN
Guys: UWAAA
SFX: GYUBOWAH
Guys: Retreaaat!
Retreat to outside the range of the crossbooows!
Page 81:
Guy: Johann!
Throw away the door!
It's burning up!
Johann: Huh?
No way!
Hot!
SFX: JYUH... (SIZZLE)
Johann: WAA
HIH
SFX: BASHAH
Guy: Johann!
Johann: Uuuu
Guy: What're you doing, you idiot!
Page 82:
Johann: The skin on my hands peeled, so I couldn't grip a weapon.
After that, all I did was stick right behind my comrades.
I couldn't even
beat one person in the whole battle.
Woman: I see.
So your name is Johann, yes?
I'm really glad, you know?
To be able to treat the people
that came back alive like this.
Woman: Okay,
your left hand.
Page 83:
Johann: Hey, now that I think of it,
this might be the first time
I've been
touched by a woman like this.
She sure is pretty.
I wonder how old she is?
Page 84:
Johann: Um,
after this,
my spear group is gonna go get a drink.
If you want to,
would you come with me?
Bertha: Oh?
You're inviting me?
That sounds great.
I'm not single,
but if
you don't mind me tagging along.
Though he is dead.
My husband.
He died in the summer of this year.
He got taken away by a soldier
and tortured...
Page 85:
Guy: W-
Well............
I was really rude, then......
Bertha: Oh, no.
Please don't think I'm insinuating anything.
Like I said,
I'm happy about the ones that come back alive.
If you'll invite me,
I'd love to partake in a drink with you.
Johann: Y-
Yes, please!
Bertha: ......
Johann: Ah, that was
rude, too.
Bertha: I'm Bertha of Andermatt.
Pleased to meet you.
Page 86:
Narration: Also in the Alps,
nearby St. Gotthard Pass.
Surveillance houses.
The magistrate, Wolfram, of the ridge's barrier, "The Wolf's Maw",
has established these surveillance houses to prevent any alternative routes to be taken on these steep mountains.
Box: Surveillance Houses
Narration: There are 4~5 soldiers stationed at each location.
Left Box: The Barrier of the Ridge
Nicknamed
"The Wolf's Maw"
Page 87:
Guy: Uuuh. Zo cold......
Dammit............
It's only a matter of time before there's a blizzard.
Heeey!
Close the window!
We're nothing against that cold!
Damn.
SFX: BATAN
Guy: It's been 2 days since we've run out of food.
When is a new supply gonna come?
Did something happen
down at the barrier..........?
Page 88:
Guys: We don't have much firewood left
and no food.
If we're cooped up in a cold place like this,
we'll freeze to death before morning.
Hey,
let's go back to the barrier!
Before we can't move due to a blizzard!
Page 89:
Guys: But
if we leave our post and return to the barrier without permission
I'm not sure if
the Lord Magistrate will pardon us.
Ugu.....
Page 90:
SFX: GOOOOOO
Guys: It's a blizzard.
We can't go outside now.
Okay,
this is the last of the firewood.
Once this is all burned,
it'll be pitch black.
Shit.
It's cold.
I'm hungry.
SFX: GATA GATA GATA GATA
SFX: GACHI GACHI GACHI GACHI (Teeth chattering)
SFX: BURU BURU BURU BURU
Page 91:
Guy: Hey,
do you think maybe
we would've been better off just deserting?
Man, why didn't we think of that?
Shut up.
Why are you bringing that up now?
SFX: GUSUH
Guys: Goddammit.
At a place like this?
I don't wanna die............
I don't wanna die..........
Page 92:
[Meanwhile, at everyone-who's-not-dead-land...]
Page 93:
[Lookitemgo]
Page 94:
Johann: Huh?
Where'd the younger group get to?
Guy: Johann.
Over here.
Page 95:
[And we got this goin' on.]
Page 96:
Guy: These aren't just prostitutes you know,
Johann.
Those women aren't whores,
they're women that gathered here from the three cantons
because they had no men they could rely on.
This is a place for survivors to meet.
Quite a few lost their lives,
so now we need to make new children.
Johann: Widows.........
SFX: POWAWAWAAN
Page 97:
Johann: Speaking of which,
I've got something to...
Guy: Not you,
Johann.
You didn't have any achievements in this battle.
If you got the same reward as them,
the ones that did work will be angry.
Johann: Oh,
that's
right.
Of
course..........
Page 98:
Guy: Regarding that, Johann,
we'll give you a chance.
Then you can restore your honor.
As you can see, the party is in full swing.
But the sound is rather disheartening.
We want some music.
In the Schwyz spear group,
there's a man called Martin.
He's apparently quite masterful at the lute.
And it seems he's lodging at the ridge inn.
So, Warrior Johann,
I give you your task.
Page 99:
Guy: Find Martin the lute player,
ask him to play for us and bring him back here.
Johann: Understood, sir!
The warrior Johann
is off!
SFX: BAHYUH
Guy: Geez.
What a difficult young man.
He's honest and cheerful.
Things calm down when he's around.
We're going to need him moving forward.
We'll need him to train and live a long time.
Page 100:
From Schwyz...
From Schwyz...
Guy: Martin?
I don't know any Martins.
SFX: HAA HAA
Guy: Try asking those guys over there.
SFX: HAA HAA
Guy: Oh,
that guy? I think he's over there.
SFX: HAA HAA
Page 101:
Guy: Uh, you might wanna try that group.
SFX: HAA HAA
Guy: Nobody by that name here.
Try asking over there.
SFX: HAA HAA
Johann: Where is he?
Where's Martin the lute master?
Guy: Ah,
that guy?
Try the next group over.
SFX: HAA HAA
Page 102:
Johann: Which one of you is the lute master, Martin?!
Hey!
Uh, I want him to play the lute at our party.
......
?
Guy: There must've been some confusion with my son.
Because my son was also a skilled musician.
Page 103:
Guy: He was shot with an arrow and killed in the northern fortress.
He was a real master when it came to the drums.
The best in the village.
Johann: Um,
er,
that was really.....
rude of me......
Guys: Get out of here, you moron!
How could you reopen people's wounds like that!
Page 104:
Johann: Kuh.
I'm not
gonna let that beat me!
Page 105:
Johann: HAA
HAA
HAA
HAA
UWA!
SFX: DOZAAH
Johann: GUNU
UU
Dammit.
HAA
I genuinely
HAA
HAA
haven't got a single clue.
Where the hell did he disappear to?
HAA
HAA
That lute master Martin..........
Page 106:
Guy: Oh,
so you were the one looking for a lute?
SFX: DAN
Johann: Are you
Martin the lute master?!
Page 107:
Guy: Wait, wait,
calm down,
it's not me.
Martin and his fellows in his spear group all died.
They were crushed in the landslide caused by Wolfram
on the Western shore of the ridge's lake.
He left this behind at the inn.
Take it.
With someone taking it as a memento,
I'm sure Martin will be able to rest in peace.
Page 108:
SFX: WAAAAAA
SFX: ZARIH
Johann: Even the injured people,
people that're in no state to be drinking and making merry
are pushing themselves through the pain
and joining into the party anyhow.
Page 109:
Guy: He was shot with an arrow and killed in the northern fortress.
Martin and his fellows in his spear group all died.
They were crushed in the landslide caused by Wolfram
Johann: I get it.
This isn't just some victory party.
They're seeing off the men that loved booze and women
with booze and women.
It's a funeral party.
And in order to hand down the memory of their fallen comrades
those that survived
are getting the things that belonged to the ones that died.
Maybe that can also
be my kind of funeral.
Page 110:
Johann: So,
what happened was.........
Guy: I see.
SFX: FUUUH
Guys: Well then,
there's nothing that can be done.
The whole spear group was wiped out, was it?
How unfortunate.
I wonder if their families will be okay?
It's going to be hard for them.
They may be from a neighboring country,
but I really would like to help them somehow.
Okay, I understand.
We'll do without instruments.
We'll manage with just
songs and clapping.
Page 111:
Guy: Johann.
Did you feel anything
during your mission?
Johann: I was given this lute
and told it was a memento from Martin.
And I think by doing that
I accepted the feelings of someone that died.
The survivors have a mission.
The duty of carrying on the wills of the dead
and living on without forgetting them,
that's what I think our mission is.
Page 112:
Guy: Well said.
Well then, Warrior Johann.
Under further review, we've decided to accept you
as a comrade of the spear group.
Johann: Th-
Thank you so much!
Page 113:
Guy: Now that that's settled, you
get the rights of the victors, too.
Look.
Johann: !
Guy: That's the one you pointed out, right?
She's been waiting there alone this whole time.
She's quite a beauty, isn't she?
When did you get the chance to make a pass at her?
Well, go ahead.
Go ahead, you've gotta hear towards the future, too.
Page 114:
Bertha: Oh,
good work.
Johann: Um......
Thank you
for coming.
Bertha: Well,
you did invite me.
Ah,
do you play that?
Johann: I don't think so with these hands.
And I don't know how to play anyhow.
Bertha: You must be thirsty.
Would you like a drink?
Johann: Oh,
thanks.
SFX: GUBI
Johann: ......
Yum!
Page 115:
Bertha: Hey,
could I'll have a sip, too?
My body's gotten pretty cold,
and I don't come here often.
Johann: Go ahead.
Bertha: Thank you.
Puu
Tehehe!
Page 116:
Johann: I think maybe once my hands are healed
I'll try to learn how to play.
Bertha: Oh,
that sounds wonderful!
Johann: Do you think once I learn to play,
you could sing along with me?
Bertha: Oh,
gladly.
I'll have to
the next time I come to this village.
Johann: Er, well,
that's not exactly what I meant.
Bertha: ?
Johann: GULP
Page 117:
Johann: I'd like you to come
to my hometown.
Bertha: ......
Ah...... Me? To your...
hometown?
Wh-
Whatever could you mean
by that?
I think I may have
misunderstood something.
Johann: .........
There's no misunderstanding.
I, uh,
want you to come with me.
So, uh, you know,
as a wife.
Page 118:
Johann: No, huh?
I figured.
Bertha: I guess you saw
right through me, didn't you?
Page 119:
Bertha: Like I said,
I used to have a husband.
And I've been looking for a new man.
Just like the other women that've gathered to this village.
Are you all right
with such a woman?
If you'll still have me,
if you really will then...
SFX: ZUH
Page 120:
Johann: Today when I was looking for the lute,
I figured something out.
It's the job of those that survive
to carry on the wills of those that died.
So I want you,
along with your deceased husband.
Page 121:
Bertha: Hey, Johann.
There's something I want you to promise me.
Please live longer than me.
Please don't die and leave me alone.
Johann: Understood.
Page 122:
Guys: Uh......
Don't fall asleep.....
If you fall asleep, you'll die..........
Page 123:
Guys: If you sleep.....
You die......
Narration: The Alps have finally
truly met winter.
