Iris Zero 1

Yay, new manga. Well not really, it came out in 2009. The author says this is a shounen manga but it's published in a seinen magazine. Weird huh? I wonder which one it is. Anyways, enjoy the wall of text.

In a world where every boy and girl has the special power called Iris.
Toru who, as a result of not having any kind of special power, was bullied from a young age, lives by his motto: “low exposure” – to live without standing out.
But his peaceful school life changes when he receives a certain [confession] from the schools most popular girl, Koyuki. His motto begins to shake!!
The school fantasy story that shakes the heart begins with their meeting.

・あさひ、聖と同じ2年6組
・襟元の二つ目のバッジは「生徒会長バッジ」で、その他の生徒会執行部メンバーも役職の書かれたバッジを付けている
・ぬいぐるみに名前をつけるタイプ

-2nd year class 6. Same class as Asahi and Hijiri.
-The two badges on her collar are the badges for [Student Body President] and her other position as an executive of the student government.
-She is the type that would name her stuffed animals.

適格者が見える瞳（アイリス）を持つ。
適格者かどうかは視た人物の頭上に○Ｘの記号で表示され、何の適格者の○Ｘが見えるかは、小雪の思考によって決定される。

Her Iris shows her people who are qualified.
They are identified by either an O or an X above their heads. As for what those people are qualified for, that all depends on Koyuki’s train of thought.

例えば１話の「生徒会長の適格者」を視ている途中で、「ケーキをおごってくれる人いないかなぁ～」と小雪が考えたとすると、その瞬間に、見える○Ｘは「最も小雪にケーキをおごる可能性の高い人物」という条件になる。世界的に探せばケーキをおごってくれそうな人など山ほどいるのだが、思考の流れで通常は「今、この場所で」という条件が自然と付加されるため、大抵は自分の目の届く範囲。自分の近くにいる人物に○が付く事になる。

For example, in chapter 1, if in the middle of looking for [the person qualified to be the student body president], she starts thinking [is there anyone who will treat me to cake], the O’s and X’s she sees will reflect that and show [the people most likely to treat me to cake]. If she searched the whole world, there would be mountains of people willing to treat her to cake, so there is a condition of [right here and now] limiting it only to places she can reach. Those people around her are shown with an O.


１話の生徒会長の選出も、小雪がずっと生徒だけを視続けていたのは、あの学校の生徒会長になる資格を有する者は、学内の生徒のみという条件が自然と付加されるため。だから、ほとんどの生徒を視たはずの小雪は、困ってしまったのだ。

In chapter 1, the reason she kept looking at the students was because of the condition that the person fit to be the student body president has to be a student of the school. That’s why she was troubled after looking at almost all the students.

Toru Mizushima

・２年３組で、時田、久賀と同じクラスだがクラスメートの顔と名前は全く覚えていない
・イヤホンは外界と自分を遮断するためにしばし着用している
・高校生男子の平均身長よりもやや小柄
・甘党

-2nd year class 3. He’s in the same class as Tokita and Kuga but doesn’t remember any of their classmate’s names or faces.
-He puts his headphones on to cut himself off from the rest of the world.
-He is shorter than the average male student.
-He likes sweets.



生まれつき瞳（アイリス）を持たない欠落者（アイリス・ゼロ）。
そのために、幼少期イジメにあった過去を持つ。

He was born without any Iris, an Iris Zero.
Because of that, he was picked on a lot when he was young.


キャラクターでサインが出来上がった段階では、透が特殊な瞳を持っている存在で、他のみんなが能力のない存在という設定だったが、それだとありきたりだし、何より透は見た目的に取り柄が無さそうだったため、何も力を持っていない「普通」という特殊になってもらう事に。

At the stage when his character design was finished, he was the one that had special eyes, and everyone else was normal, but that idea has been done to death. Just from his appearance, he doesn’t seem special, so we made him special by being [normal].

ネクラで生意気という、イジメられるために生まれてきたような性格の持ち主。
さすがに小学時代に学んだようで、中学からは低視聴率をポリシーにデビューを果たした。
だが、１話にしてそんな穏やかな生活の天敵が現れてしまうのだが…。
彼の持ち前の思考力は、実はこの不運な体質や過去と切っても切り離せない（４話参照）。

The owner of a gloomy and rude personality born from bullying.
Learning from his elementary school years, he debuted in middle school with the policy of low exposure.
But in chapater 1, his days of peace and quiet disappear as his life style’s natural enemy appears…
With his characteristic thinking power, he can’t get away from his past even if he tried. (Reference to chapter 4)

少年漫画の主人公とは思えないネガティブキャラで、今後もマイウェイを突き進んで欲しい。

I hope this negative character, who most people wouldn’t believe to be the protagonist of a shounen manga, will continue doing things his way.

低視聴率 – I translated this as “low exposure” mainly because “視聴率” means ratings for T.V shows and 低 means low. I’ve thought about leaving it in just romanji but decided not to.
