「あとがき　―荒野より―」
子供こ頃から―荒野の光景が私の中に巣くっていた。乾いて赤茶けた土。朱色に燃える巨大な太陽。大地に黒い影を落とすのはもはや遺跡としか呼べぬ滅んだ文明の残骸だ。死を孕んだ「滅びの光景」にも関わらず、私はその荒野に惹きつけられた。子供の頃から親しんだ西部劇映画にイメージの源泉はあったはずだ。私の少年期にあふれていた世界滅亡の様々なヴィジョンもまた影響していたろう。その次代は東西冷戦のさなかで核戦争の危機は常に頭上にあり、やがて訪れるはずの一九九九年は世界が滅亡する予言と共にあった。世界終焉というのは少年には不思議に甘美なヴィジョンでもあるのだ。だが私の中に巣くった荒野は完全なる死の土地ではなかった。いつしか私はその荒野に生きる人間を夢想の中で探していた。その荒野を住処となるものがいるとすれば、生きることに対して強い意思を持つ者のはずだ。

その人間はどんな姿をしているのか？その人間はどんな言葉を口にするのか？　その人間は荒野で何をなそうとしているのか？問いの彼方に、いつしか一人の女の姿が立ち現れた。美しい女だが死を背負って不吉は影を常に身にまとっている。彼女が駆けるのは満載された、棺桶のように黒々とした箱馬車だ。彼女は生と死の境界線を永遠に旅する存在で、出会うもの全てに対する「問い」となる宿命を背負っているのだ。その女に〈ガラミィ〉と名付けたのがかれこれ十数年前のこと。幾度かその荒野の美女を作品にしようと試みたが、どうしもうまくいかなかった。書きかけては中断したワープロ原稿のことこ私はいつしか忘れていた。思うにまだ期が熱していなかったのだろう。二年ほど前、ヤングガンガン編集部に紹介された「梟　NIGHTOWL」氏の絵に出合った時、　私は自分の中に荒野の光景が蘇り、〈ガラミィ〉の姿がかつてないほど鮮明に立ち現れるのを感じた。期はようやく訪れた。〈ガラミィ〉は彼女の世界である荒野と共に形を得ることが出来たのだ。〈ガラミィ〉と〈ソーナ〉の旅路にお付き合い願いたい。


[Afterword - From the wastelands-]
Ever since I was a kid- the image of a wasteland was already in my mind. A dry reddish brown earth. A giant crimson sun. The only things that set shadows on ground are those of ruins from a ruined culture. Despite being a [scene of destruction] filled with death, wastelands captivated me. The western movies I saw as a child were the sources of my images. They were probably affected by the visions of a ruined earth that filled my childhood days. Those days, the East and West were in the middle of a cold war and with the threat of nuclear war, it was predicted that the world would end in 1999. The idea of the world ending was a strangely sweet image for young boys. But the wasteland that I imagined was not that of a completely dead earth. Before I knew it, it was looking for people living in the wasteland. Since they've made the wasteland their home, they must have a strong will to live.

What do those people look like? What would they speak? What are they trying to accomplish in that wasteland? A woman's figure stood at the end of those questions. She was beautiful but burdened with death and carried an ominous shadow about her. She rides a coffin like black box-shaped carriage. An existence forever traveling on the edge between life and death, she carries the [question] that is to become the destiny of those she meets. She was given the name Garami 10 or so years ago. I've tried many times to put the wasteland and the beauty into production, but it never went well. I'd start writing, stop for a while, and forget all about the manuscript. I probably wasn't too in to it. 2 years ago, when Young Gangan's editorial department introduced me to [Nightowl's] art. I felt my image of the wasteland was brought back to life and my image of Garami was as vivid as ever. The time had finally come. (Garami) and her world, the wasteland, had finally taken form.
I hope you join (Garami) and (Souna) on their journey.

渇きの砦 - Kawaki No Toride - Translated as "Thirsting Fortress", but since it's a name, I just romanized and left it as is.
