ひろこちゃんくらいの頃まで　俺はよく幻覚を見たんだ
I used to see illusions all the time until I was about the same age as old as you
幽霊みたいなものとか　針葉樹が燃える姿とか大きなへびだとかそんなものをさ
Things like ghosts, images of burning trees, or really huge snakes and stuff

死んだばあさんが枕元に立っていたのを見たこともある
I even saw my dead grandma standing beside my bed once

そういうことを親に話すととても心配そうな顔でこっちを見るんだ
When I told my parents about that sorta thing, they used to look at me real worried
だから　だんだん誰にもそういう話をしなくなった
So bit by bit I stopped talkin' to people about it

He said if she just takes her time and rests she'll get better, and then he made her take some medicine

However there were bruises and scars on her body and he said he wanted to hear about that in detail afterwards

あの子の母親はかなりやり手のキャリアウーマンだったんだ
The kid's mother was a pretty successful career woman
そしてキャリアを積んで　中堅にさしかかったあたりで子供が出来た
She was building up her business, and just as she was getting around to the bulk of it she got pregnant

彼女は子供が欲しくはなかったが　夫が望んだので出産した　でも彼女は子供に対して愛情を抱くことが出来なかった
She didn't want children but her husband did so she ended up giving birth. But she wasn't able to feel any affection toward her child
彼女には　その子が自分が社会に出るのを阻害するものとしかうつらなかったんだな
For her, that kid only appeared to be an obstruction to her becoming a real member of society

あの子は外界の環境に鋭敏に反応する体質を持って生まれた
That kid was born with a predisposition that made her especially sensitive to her physical surroundings
それはそれで　一つの個性だと思う
And that's just one of the things that I would consider her quirks

でも彼女はそうはとらなかった
But that's not how she saw it.

自己防衛のためあの子はしばしばパニックを起こした
To protect herself that kid often caused a lot of panic.
母親はそれを重大な欠陥ととらえた
Her mother viewed this as a serious defect.

あの子は初語も遅かったし　人見知りも激しかった
Her first words were pretty late and she was also intensely shy
彼女にとって自分の娘が社会に適応できないかもしれないということは耐え難いことだったんだろう
For her, the fact that her own daughter might not be able to fit into society, must have been difficult to endure

彼女は少し病的なほどの完全主義者でね
She was a perfectionist, to an almost neurotic degree.
それは学生時代からそうだったが
She's been like that ever since her student years
おっさんはその頃から知ってたんだ
You knew her back then, huh

３人とも　同じ大学でな。。。　友達同士だったんだ
Us 3, we all went to the same college... we were friends and comrades

２０年前の話さ
That was 20 years ago

この旦那が家のことをあまり顧みない男でな
This husband of her's was a man who didn't really care about the family and...
彼女は　自分だけに子供を押しつけ　好き勝手している夫を憎み子供を憎んだ
She hated her husband for pushing the child onto her and doing whatever he pleased and she hated her child

あの子が幼稚園に入る頃夫婦仲はかなり険悪になった
When that kid was entering kindergarten their relationship got considerably worse
。。。そういう大人たちのささくらた感情の波からあの子を守ろうとしたのはじいさんだけだったんだろう
... The only person who was trying to protect that kid from the fractured waves of emotions of those adults was probably her grandfather.

そして小学校に入ってしばらくして夫婦は離婚
And then just a short while after she entered elementary school her parents divorced
娘を引き取った母親はますます矯正に力を入れ思い通りにならないことを責めたてた
Her mother, who took charge of her, blamed her child more and more for the things she was straining to fix but that never turned out to her own satisfaction

この頃から母親は娘に暴力を振ろうようになる
It seems that around that time her mother began to become physically abusive

。。。その　学校ではどうだったの？　友達とかは？
That's... And the school didn't do anything? Or her friends?
集団参加がまったくできず　独立していたらしい　教師からは自閉症児扱いされていた
She wasn't able to participate in any group activities and it appears she was left by herself. She was treated like an autistic child by her teachers

そんなわけで　学校にも行かなくなってじいさんのアパートにばかりいるようになった
That being the case she even stopped going to school and just stayed at her grandfather's apartment.
じいさんはあの子をよくバイクの後ろに乗せてやっていたらしい
It seems her grandfather let her ride on the back of his bike often

あの子がなついたのはじいさんだけだったんだよ
The only person that kid was attached to was her grandfather.

前にもいったがそのじいさんは先日バイクの事故で亡くなった
I told you before but her grandfather passed away in an accident a couple of days ago.
走行中に前方のトラックと乗用車の衝突事故に巻き込まれたんだ
He got caught up in an accident between a moving truck and a passenger car.

その時後ろにあの子も乗っていたんだ
At that time the kid was riding on the back of the bike too

体重が軽かったし放し出され方が良かったのか　あの子はほとんど無傷だっただが相当のショックを受けたんだろう
Her body weight is light, and maybe the way she fell out was just lucky, she was almost completely uninjured. But she must've suffered a substantial amount of trauma.

その後　あの子は　じいさんのゴーグルをつけたまま　一切　口を閉さしてしまった
Ever since then, that kid has kept her grandfather's goggles on and her mouth completely shut

じゃあ　あの子のお母さん大変な時期に入院しちゃったんだね
Then her mother was hospitalized at a pretty severe time

。。。彼女は殻に閉じこもった娘を前にもまして憎んだ
...She hated her daughter, who had completely withdrawn into herself, even more than before

夫と離婚も父親の事故も　全てあの子が原因だと考えるようになった
Her divorce and her father's accident, she started to believe that everything was caused by that kid

かなり参っていてひどい状態だったよ
It was a pretty messed up and awful situation

それで風呂場で転んでケガしちゃったんだ
And so she fell over in the bathroom and hurt herself

浴室であの子を殺そうとしたんだ
She tried to kill that kid in the bathroom

浴槽にあの子の頭を押し込んで殺そうとしたんだ
She tried to kill her by drowning her under the water in the bath
だが激しく抵抗されタイルで足を滑らせ頭を強く打ったんだ
But she was frantically resisted and slipped on a towel and fell on her head hard

Don't rush a smooth recovery. The "beauty" that unexpectedly catches her eye restores the link between this young girl and the world.

The next piece of work is in the middle of development! Look forward to it!

Notes:
Wow. Yay. Finished.

Kouichi uses a lot of contractions and is pretty informal so I tried to reflect that in the english as well and also give him that slacker attitude with the sort of awkward dialogue in there with Hiroko too. If it's not completely consistent there are points where he probably wouldn't use too many contractions (repeating quotations or maybe talking to Murata.) Though he's a slacker, he does seem intelligent and also seems to have his own quirks (from his childhood memories) and uses some strange phrases at times, which I also tried to reflect throughout in my choice of words for him.

Murata is pretty normal, so I tried to keep it more formal and less contractions and a generally larger vocabulary and maybe a little more long winded.

Toward the end I was pretty tired so there'll probably be more awkward sounding things there that'll take a good amount of editing!

Taniguchi Jiro: A mangaka and critic/scholar who is famous for his manga based on Natsume Soseki's life while writing his famous work "Bocchan." It's published by ponent mon in the states (I think.) But to be honest, I think ponent mon's publishing sorta sucks, those silly frenchies. I bought a copy of Nananan's Blue and the printing was so fucked up. And all of the stuff I've bought from ponent mon seems to have such shitty binding despite costing so damn much.
