Coffee Time 12
Chapter 12: chopped tomato puree
The innocent sweetness makes people lose their way, the bitterness becomes an addiction.
Cut off sign: No Smoking
Was it better to be an awkward dreamer? How about being a burn out?
Let's split up already.
I don't want to.
Sorry to keep you waiting.
Uh- the Columbian Supremo [[a type of coffee bean]] is for...
Ah, that's me.
And the cake's for me too.
Hm? What's this?
I've already filled in everything that was needed.
So all you need to do is to put your seal on it please.
Eh? For what?
Fire insurance? Or is it for injury insurance?
I want to leave you.
You don't know!?
Did you go to [[Hello Work]] the job agency?
You didn't, did you.
What about the interview with Nomura Electronics?
... I didn't go.
Why didn't you go?
And Murakawa Electronics... I'm the one who asked Harada-san to introduce you to them.
The coffee's getting cold.
I'll never fool around again.
And I'll quit playing the slots.
I'll pick up all the garbage and stop leaving it around the house.
I'll quit taking loans out on consumer credit too.
And I'll really quit smoking.
I'll stop pissing in the shower too.
... What I'm angry about,
aren't just those things.
Well, I didn't know you were peeing in the shower but...
Ever since you quit the research laboratory, you haven't been serious about any of them.
What... It's that?
Working at the watch repair shop or the secondhand book store, those were just temporary. weren't they?
You still haven't truly given up trying to create a bipedal robot, have you?
... I don't know what on earth happened that made you quit because you won't talk to me about it but,
I'm sick of watching you get by so lackadaisically while hiding the things you really want to do.
... You say some pretty harsh things...
But I've decided already.
But... I don't want to split up.
I've decided already.
So put your seal on it and send it to that address, okay?
I'll come pick up the bigger packages later. And make sure you go to those interviews.
The renewal for the apartment is next month so make sure you remember it. And the way the garbage gets separated is changing after April so pay attention to it.
No, never mind.
Excuse me sir, What do you think you're doing?
It's all right if everyone doesn't think about it so seriously, right? Ah, that's it.
Relating to the chapter title. Toyoda Tetsuya's notes from page 3:
The subtitle for this chapter, "Chotto Matte Kure (Chopped Tomato Puree)" was taken from the title of Imawano Kiyoshiro's song. I couldn't really think of a title and the day after I finally thought of it I heard about his death on the radio. It felt strongly like, "No way!" as many emotions rushed up, but it is hard to put into words. It's not like I'm worried about whether we should pray for his happiness in the next world but rather it's hard to believe that The Boss died before he turned into an old shrivelled up geezer. This time, as usual, I turned in my manuscript late and I was spacing out but, the feeling that something happened that couldn't be undone wouldn't leave.

Relating to the blurb following the title:
To me it seems like there's a double entendre here, revolving around the dual meaning of amasa, sweetness and also naivety. In other words it's a rather cynical statement here about sweet naivety causing you to lose your way and causing you to fall into a rut (being bitter). While the bitterness works fine in english... I don't think there's any great way to convey this other meaning of innocence/naivety other than doubling it up...
Seems like there are a lot of cameos in this chapter.
Anyone know some better English approximations for these idioms?
