Chapter 2
A person close to you is suddenly gone and you can't even grasp the reason.
2
Her husband disappears, leaving behind neither a hint nor a trace. In the midst of this pensive atmosphere she re-opened the family bath house but...
Aunt: Isn't it great that someone came to help so quickly?
Kanae: Yeah, I thought it was the beginning of the end, but he's really helped out.
3
Aunt: He seems a little out of place but he's diligent... it's no big deal.
Kanae: Yeah, and it seems like he's used to this kind of work, he'll pick it up quickly
Aunt: But it bothers me a little that he seems like a drifter or a migratory worker.
Kanae: Yeah, it seems like he's done all sorts of work, but Oomura san introduced him to us so he's probably not irresponsible.
Aunt: By the way, where is he going to stay?
Kanae: Mmm... about that...
Aunt: Eh? A live-in!?
4
Kanae: Um, this isn't a live-in position... Did Mr. Oogura say it was?
Hori: Yeah... that's what I heard but...
Kanae: Huh!?
Kanae: There _is_ a room on the second floor but I can't have anyone stay there...
Kanae: What will we do? There's nowhere you can stay around here...
Hori: What's over there?
Kanae: Eh!?
Kanae: Oh, That's the room the live-in employees used during my father's time.
5
Kanae: The ceilings are low and its not very practical so it's being used as a closet now.
Hori: Would it be okay if I borrowed it for a bit?
Kanae: Eh? But it's only a 4 mat room...
Hori: That's alright, it's just me.
Kanae: And it's above the boiler so it gets really hot.
平気です
Hori: No problem.
Hori: It's just until I find an apartment close by.
Aunt: Eh-!? Then that guy is going to live here starting tonight!?
うん。。。
Kanae: Yeah... Well, that's how it is.
6
Aunt: Eh! Hold on! You can't do that!!
Kanae: It can't be helped, he's got no where to stay right now.
Aunt: No where to stay? Is it normal for a live-in to stay in a single woman's house!?
Kanae: I sleep on the second floor so there's no problem
Aunt: Second floor? Climb up the stairs and you're there!
Kanae: The room's got a lock.
Aunt: That's not what I'm talking about!
あのね
Kanae: You know...
Kanae: You're being pretty rude to Hori san! Making those kinds of assumptions!

Kanae: Now that I think about it, the door wasn''t locked from this side
Kanae: I can't make a fuss locking the door now...
13
Kanae: Besides, even if he came through the changing room, there's nothing I could do
Kanae: he'll come from the front or the back and it'll be like this...
Kanae: It's like having a tiger in front of you and a wolf behind you
Kanae: Well, yeah, so... it doesn't really matter (who the heck is she explaining all this to?)
Hori: Ma'am?
Kanae: Y-Yes!?
Hori: Should I drain the water when I get out?
14
Kanae: Ah, I'll be scrubbing it when I drain it tomorrow so don't worry about it.

Kanae(?): It's not just like famous people or particular ways of dying, normal ones... well, there's nothing normal about it but, suicides committed by jumping or hanging get written up too.
Kanae(?): So I don't understand the difference between people who get reported and those who don't.
Hori: It's not just the circumstances of the death. Maybe they consider if the reasons are unusual or tragic.

JR Main Line -Accident-
If he died without being in an accident, then he's disappeared. Although neither would be preferable, she's always searching for some kind of sign.
Notes
Things are getting a little deeper and darker than they appear at the start.
The issue with the honorifics is coming up again. Whether to leave the san and chan out or in. I think I will have to go with leaving them in instead of adapting them as Mr. or Misses or something. Though I am using Ma'am for Okusan, it sounds really weird to just drop the san when Kanae is looking around for Hori, and it sounds even worse to add a Mr. in front of those particular queries. Anyways, I guess I'll have to go back and edit out the Mr. in front of Oomura later in Chapter 1.
1
Lit: You can't even arrive at a guess of the reason.
3
She states the assertion in the negative, but maybe it might sound better to put it in the positive in English, "he's probably dependable" or something.
Maybe it's just because its uncommon but "live-in" sounds weird to me.
5
Four tatami mat room, dunno if some note about room measurements are needed or if it should just be converted to sq feet or something
8
I think its the first time she mentions it. Satoru is Kanae's husband. That line is rather funny. An obtuse way for an old lady to tell her not to be a slut...
11-12
I decided to keep the repetition the same since that's the joke despite it feeling really redundant.
Lit: It's not like I can make a disturbance and lock the room now.
13
There's probably some English idiom that would fit this better.
20
I guess its more like, I'll graciously have some... but I can't think of a natural way to indicate that sort of humility.
22
"Do your own thing" sounds a little awkward to me.
Lit: But making one person's portion and making two people's portions, there is no change in effort so...
23
The rest of the newspaper text doesn't really matter does it? :P
24
The speakers are sort of vague here.
Tokushu: generally special or unique...
But it sounds rather strange if you say someone has a "special" reason for dying. I chose unusual to contrast it later with usual. Other words that might work or sound better w/o an awkward connotation... maybe regular/particular? or normal/abnormal? I think unique and special have way too much of a positive connotation to use.
25
Lit: Sorry for asking you something boring
Lit: She's always searching for some kind of notice.

Four tatami mat room, dunno if some note about room measurements are needed or if it should just be converted to sq feet or something

Lit: It's not like I can make a disturbance and lock the room now.

Lit: Sorry for asking you something boring
Lit: She's always searching for some kind of notice.
