Chapter 3

まつことも諦めることもできない。ただ、立ちすくむだけ。
Unable to neither wait nor give up, she is simply petrified.

家業の銭湯を再開し、失踪した夫の報せを待つ日々。宙ぶらりのかなえが再会したのは。。。
The days that she spends waiting for news of her husband's disappearance after re-opening the family business. A pensive Kanae reunites with...

Kanno: Kanae!

ああ　やっぱり　かなえだ！
Kanno: Ah, I knew it! It's Kanae!
え。。。
Kanae: Um...
。。。カンノ？　管野！？
Kanae... Kanno? Kanno!?

なんだ　管野じゃない！　眼鏡かけてるからわかんなかった！
Kanae: If it isn't Kanno! You were wearing glasses so I didn't recognize you!
や　あたしはすぐかなえだってわかったよ　元気！？
Kanno: Well I knew it was Kanae right away! Are you well!?
うん　元気元気　でもなんでこんな所にいるの？
Kanae: Yes, I'm doing fine, but what are you doing over here?
ちょっとおかあさんとこ寄っててさ　この近くなんだ　家
Kanno: I'm just visiting my mother-in-law. Her house is close by.
あ　そうなの？
Kanae: Ah, really?

え！？　これあんたの子？　あんたが産んだの？
Kanae: Eh!? Is this your kid? You gave birth?
そうだよ！何いってんだよ！
Kanno: Yeah! What are you talking about!

ね　時間大丈夫？どっかでお茶でも飲もうよ
Kanno: Hey, You got some time? Let's go have some tea somewhere!
あ　うん　いいよ
Kanae: Ah, yeah, okay.

そうだよね　かなえの結婚式以来　会ってないんだから。。。　４年だ　４年ぶりだ
Kanno: That's right, I haven't met you since your wedding ceremony... 4 years... it's been 4 years.
そうか。。。　もうそんなになるんだ
Kanae: Yeah... it's already that long.
そうだよ　かなえのお父さんが　亡くなったときも　お葬式行けなかったし　あの時はごめんね
Kanno: Oh, When your father passed away I didn't even go to the funeral. Sorry about that.
ううん　いいのよ
Kanae: It's okay.

あたしも　この子が生まれるまで　仕事続けてたから　ずっと忙しくてさ
Kanno: I was also working until I gave birth to this kid so I was really busy.
その子いつ産まれたの？
Kanae: When was your baby born?
去年の１１月、もうすぐ１０ヵ月になるの
Kanno: November last year. It'll be 10 months soon.

男の子？女の子？名前はなんて言うの？
Kanae: A boy? Or a girl? What name did you decide on?
男のこ　名前は町蔵
Kanno: It's a boy. His name is Machizou.

うそ！　本当に！？
Kanae: No way! Really!?
うそだよーん
Kanno: It's a lie~
本当は康　康平だよ
Kanno: It's really Kou- Kouhei.
あんたねえ。。。
Kanae: You really...

かなえのところはどうなの？　悟さん　元気？
Kanno: What about you? How's Satoru san

Kanae: Ah... Yeah, he's fine...
４年だもんね　銭湯主人もすっかり板についたろうねえ
Kanno: It's been 4 years huh? He's probably completely used to being the head of the bath house.

学生の頃のこと考えると不思議だよね　あんたと悟さんが　くっついてお古屋さん継いでるんだもんねえ
Kanno: It's really unexpected when you think back to when we were students. You and Satoru san getting together and taking over the old business.

あんたたちゼミ同じだったけど　卒業前につきあいだすまで　全然接点ないかんじだったんじゃん
Kanno: You guys were in the same seminars but from before you graduated till you dated, it was like you guys didn't have anything to do with each other

そうだ！　こんど３人で　飲みにいこうよ
Kanno: That's right! We 3 should go for some drinks next time!

お店が休みの日にさ！　そしたらあたし　おかあさんとこに　子供預けるから
Kanno: On a day that the shop's on break of course! And I'll leave the kid at my mother-in-law's

あのね。。。
Kanae: Um...

Aunt: Is she not here?

奥さんなら　買い物に出かけましたよ
Hori: If you're looking for the ma'am she went out shopping
えっ！？
Aunt: Eh!?

なんです？
Hori: What is it?
いや　どじょう　もらったんだけどさ　ウチの人食べないから　かなちゃんとこでどう
かなと思って
Aunt: Well, I recieved some loaches but the people in my household can't eat it so I thought maybe someone might want them at Kana chan's

Hori: Ahh

あたしも食べんのは好きだけど、茹でるのが苦手でさ　ちょっとザンコクじゃない？
Aunt: I enjoy eating them too but I'm no good at boiling them, it'd be a bit of a waste wouldn't it?

Hori: Ahh

あんたくにどこなの？
Aunt: Where are you from?
は？
Hori: Huh?

。。。知らなかった
Kanno: ... I had no idea.

その後まったく連絡ないの？　書き置きとかも全然？
Kanno: After that he didn't contact you at all? No letter or anything?
なにも
Kanae: Nothing
出て行く前にそれらしい様子も無かったの？
Kanno: Before he left he didn't appear like he was going to did he?
なにも
Kanae: Not at all.

朝　組合の旅行に行くのに　バッグ持って　普通にそのまま家を出て。。。
Kanae: That morning he was going on the union trip, he brought his bag and left the house as he did normally.

おみやげ　買ってくるって　現地で別れてから　誰も見てないって。。。
Kanae: They said he said he was going to buy a souvenir and after he left nobody saw him.

ええ　ですからね　そちらの病院で　そういう男性が運び込まれてはいませんか。。。！？。。。はい
Kanae: Yes, so... isn't there a man by that name whose been brought in at your hospital...!? ... Yes.
。。。はい
Kanae: ... Yes.

じゃ　行ってくるよ
Satoru: Well, I'll be back.

かなちゃん少し眠りなよ　電話はあたしがついててあげるから
Aunt: Kanachan get a little rest, I'll take care of the phone for you.
大丈夫。。。　大丈夫
Kanae: I'm fine... I'm fine.

ご主人の出発時の服装は？
Police: What was your husband wearing when he left?
。。。うすいブルーのシャツとベージュのズボン。。。
Kanae: ... A light blue shirt and beige pants...

Kanae: Is that so...
はい　はい　わかりました　いえ。。。　ありがとうございました
Kanae: Okay, okay, I understand. No... Thank you very much.

いや　様子は特に変わったことなかった
?: Nah, the situation hasn't really changed.

?: Right?
ん
?: Yup.

だって生きてるなら　どうして連絡がないの！？　どうして何も言わずに出ていちゃったの！？
Kanae: I mean, if he's alive then why hasn't he contacted me!? Why'd he leave without saying anything!?

Aunt: Kanachan
どうしてあたしに何も言ってくれなかったの　どうして！？　どうして！？
Kanae: Why didn't he tell me anything!? Why!? Why!?

２年前に先代の旦那が亡くなって、これから若夫婦で　力を合わせて　やっていこうって　さなかだったのよ
Aunt: 2 Years ago the head of the household of the previous generation passed on, from then on they were in the midst of giving it their all and cooperating as a young couple.

かなちゃんがここを継ぐっていったときに　悟さんは　仕事を辞めて　ムコ養子にまでなって　一緒になったんだけどさ
Aunt: When Kanachan said she was going to take over here Satoru san quit his job and even became an adopted husband and they worked together but...

傍から見てても　仲のいい夫婦でねえ　今だに何か信じられない感じよね。。。
Aunt: From the side they looked like such a close couple that it's even hard to believe now

あんた　きついタバコ吸ってんのねえ
Aunt: You smoke some strong stuff huh?
すみません
Hori: Sorry.

事故。。。ってことはないよね　もしそうなら　なんらかの形で警察に知らせが行くでしょうし
Kanno: An accident... that can't be it, if that were the case a notice would get to the police in some form

自殺。。。　ごめんね　もし自殺したとしても、特殊な場所を選ばない限りに　発見される場所が多いだろうし
Kanno: Suicide... Sorry... If it was suicide, unless he chose somewhere really unusual there are many places where it would be discovered.
大体自殺する理由なんかないでしょう？
Kanno: Besides he didn't really have any reason to commit suicide did he?

。。。もうね　いろんな可能性は考えつくしちゃったの　でもやっぱり自分の意思で出て行ったとしか思えないんだよね
Kanae: ... I've already thought of all sorts of possibilities, but I can only think of things that come out of my own mind after all.

他に好きな人がいたのかもしれない　他に何かやりたいことがあったのかもしれない
Kanae: Maybe there was someone else he liked, maybe there was something else he wanted to do
あたしのことが嫌になったのかもしれない　銭湯の仕事が嫌になったのかもしれない。。。
Kanae: Maybe he got tired of me, maybe he got tired of working at the bath house.

いなくなる前まったくなんの兆しもなかったの？
Kanno: There weren't any hints at all before he left?

うん。。。多分なかったとおもう
Kanae: Yes... I think there probably weren't any.

あれからずっと　悟さんと一緒にいた時の事を思い出そうとするんだけど　何か薄ぼんやりとしちゃって。。。
Kanae: From that point on, I've been trying to think of the times when I was with Satoru san but I feel like an absolute fool
ショックはショックなんだけど　あまりに突然のことなんで　何か現実感がないの
Kanae: It _was_ a shock but, it was so sudden that it doesn't feel like it's real at all.

私の中での悟さんのイメージと蒸発って結びつきにくいな。。。
Kanae: It's difficult to connect the disappearance with the images of Satoru san inside me.
人当たりが良くて　面倒見が良くて　責任感があって。。。
Kanae: He got along well with people, he was helpful, and he was responsible...

一日のうち何度も考えるんだ
Kanae: I can think about it over and over all day
あたしが悪かったのか　あたしのせいで何かつらい思いしていたのか。。。
Kanae: If I was the one that was wrong, if because of me he went through something painful...
。。。あたしと結婚したのが間違っていたのか。。。
Kanae: ... If it was wrong to get married to me...

だめ！　だめだよ　そんなふうに考えちゃ！　まだ何にもわかってないんだから
Kanno: No! You can't think about it like that because you still don't know anything!
それにどんな理由があろうと　書き置きも残さずに行方をくらますなんて　卑怯もいいところじゃない！
Kanno: Further more, no matter what the reason, to do something like hide one's whereabouts and not even leave a note, that's cowardly isn't it!

親は？　彼の家族には何の連絡もないの？
Kanno: What about his parents? He didn't contact his family at all?

彼交通遺児だもの　ふた親ともいないよ
Kanae: He was orphaned by a traffic accident. He doesn't any parents.

そうか。。。そういえばそうだっけ。。。
Kanno: Really... Now that you mention it, that's right...
あたしは小さいころから母親がいなくってさ。。。
Kanae: My mother passed away when I was young...

親がいない者同士　お互い気持ちがわかるねなんて　いってたんだけど
Kanae: So I used to say things like we both didn't have any parents so we understood each other's feelings but
何が一番つらいかっていうとね。。。
Kanae: When I think about what might be the most painful...

あたしは彼のこと実は何にもわかってなかったのかもしれない
Kanae: I might have not actually understood anything about him at all.
そう思うのが一番つらいんだ
Kanae: Thinking _that_ is the most painful.

ずっと眠りっ放しだね
Kanae: He slept through it all, huh?
いつもこうだと　たすかるんだけどね　お母さんちで　さんざん暴れてたからねえ
Kanno: If he was like this all the time then that'd help me out a lot. He was throwing some terrible tantrums at my mother-in-law's house.
死んでんじゃないの
Kanae: He's not dead is he?
バカ　いってんじゃないよ
Kanno: Stupid, don't say that!

ごめんね　久しぶりにあったのに　何か変な話になちゃって。。。
Kanae: Sorry about that, even though it's been so long since we met, our conversation became sort of strange...
何　いってんのよ！！
Kanno: What are you saying!!

しっかりしな　なんて　こんなとき無責任に他人がいえる事じゃないけど
Kanno: Get a hold of yourself! Well, it's not really something for someone unrelated to be saying so irresponsibly at a time like this but...
でも　しっかりしなよ　変な気起こしちゃダメだよ！
Kanno: Still, get a hold of yourself! Don't start falling into a rut!
うん　大丈夫だよ
Kanae: Yeah, I'm alright

こんな時　ウチの旦那がいれば　少しや役に立つかもしれないんだけど。。。
Kanno: At these times, if my husband were around, he might be of a little use.

管野の旦那って調査会社で働いているんだっけ？
Kanae: Kanno's husband works at a investigation company doesn't he?
そうなの　今　仕事で何か知らないけどずっと　北海道にいるんだよね
Kanno: That's right, I don't really know what he's working on right now, but he's in Hokkaido.

Kanae: ... Huh? You mean about searching for Satoru san...?
そうそう　それで　知り合い料金でまけてもらってさ
Kanno: Yeah, and you'll receive a discount as an acquaintance.
。。。よくわらないけど調査会社って人探しとかしないんじゃないの？
Kanae: ... I don't really get it but, investigation companies don't search for people do they?

同じようなもんでしょう　人が隠したがっているものゴソゴソ探し出すんだから
Kanno: It's the same thing isn't it? They unearth things that people have hidden.

Kanae: Is it...
じゃなかったら　業界のツテで探偵の一人や二人紹介してもらうのよ！
Kanno: If it's not, he'll introduce you to one or two detectives through his connections in the business

Kanno: Well, I'm off, you really can't let yourself get down

Kanae: Yup, Thanks

Kanno: I'll contact you again

Kanae: Okay, see you again.

Hori: Ah, welcome back

偶然昔の友達と会って話し込んじゃって　こらっ　放せバカ！
Kanae: By coincidence I bumped into an old friend and got caught up in a conversation. HEY, let go stupid!
そうですか
Hori: Oh, I see.

仕込みは終わりましたよ
Hori: I finished the preparations.
すみません
Kanae: Sorry

あのーさっき木島さんがー
Hori: Oh, Kijima san was just here but-
えー？
Kanae: Eh?

Hori: Are you okay!?

Kanae: Wahh! What is this!!

Hori: They're loaches.

ひーっ　中　入ってきた！
Kanae: Eek! They got inside!
鍋に！　鍋に集めて下さい
Hori: The pot! Gather them in the pot!

Kanae: Erm

Hori: Ma'am, in here-
　
どこに行くんですか？
Hori: Where are you going?
どじょうに訊いてえ～～～
Kanae: Ask the loaches~~~~

どじょうたべたの？
Aunt: Did you eat the loaches?
ううんまだ
Kanae: No, not yet.
あ　そう。。。なんだが　匂いがするようだから
Aunt: Oh really... but you smell like them so...
。。。いわないで
Kanae: ... don't say it.

あの人。。。　堀さんて来てからどのくらい経つんだっけ？
Aunt: How much time has passed since that guy... Hori san came?
えーと　もう２ヵ月くらい経つかな
Kanae: Hmm, about 2 months have passed.

なんだか最初は得体の知れない感じだったけど
Aunt: At first he seemed a bit suspicious but...
別に愛想もないのにすっかり馴染んじゃった感じよね。。。
Aunt: Even though he's not particularly social, doesn't it feels like we're completely used to him?
でしょ　おばさんが警戒しすぎなのよ
Kanae: Aren't we? You're were being way too cautious.
話してるといつの間にかいろいろしゃべちゃうのよね
Aunt: When you talk to him, before you know it all sort of things slip out.

何？　何をいつの間にか　いろいろ　しゃべちゃうの？
Kanae: What? What do you mean, "before you know it, all sort of things slip out?"
いや　別に　なんでもないけどさ
Aunt: Erm, It doesn't really mean anything...

あ　そうか　あした　日曜か
Kanae: Oh, that's right, tomorrow is Sunday.
先週はリンゴ風呂でしたね
Hori: Last week was the apple baths, right?

リンゴ風呂　ワイン風呂　ジャスミン風呂　ヨモギ風呂。。。　いろいろやったけど何かパッとしないなあ
Kanae: Apple baths, wine baths, jasmine baths, mugwort baths... We've tried all sorts but none of them were that impressive.

何かいいのないかな。。。
Kanae: Aren't there any good ones...

ねえ　どじょう入れちゃおうか？
Kanae: Hey, how about if we put loaches in them.
は？
Hori: Huh?
どじょう風呂！おもしろいんじゃない？
Kanae: Loach baths! Doesn't it sound interesting?

お湯ん中ニュルニュル動いて　子供とか喜ぶんじゃない？　煮えたらお客さんがたべちゃえばいいし！
Kanae: They'd squirm around in the water; wouldn't the kids love it? If they boil then the customers can just eat them!
それからついでに卵もいれちゃって柳川風呂なんてどお？掃除　大変だけど
Kanae: And then if we just add some egg it'll be Yanagawa baths! It'll be a pain to clean though

本当にやるんですか
Hori: Are we really going to do that?

冗談にきまってるじゃない。。。
Kanae: Isn't it obviously a joke...

どじょうだけに滑る滑る。ー宙ぶらりの気持ちに変わりがないが、腫れ物抜いにも飽きてくる。
Only the loaches slip and slide. The feeling of pensiveness doesn't change but it's even growing tiresome to relieve the pressure.

前にも後にも進めない日々が延々と続く。
The days where you can move neither backward nor forward are everlasting.

Notes:
It really starts to pick up now. Next chapter is great.

Kanae: Um...

It's not literal, but maybe something that would fit better would be like, "Hey, listen..." or "Uh... Well..."
