Chapter 4
She understand for the first time after losing it. But isn't that how it is with everyone?
2
The days that she spends waiting for news of her husband's disappearance after re-opening the bath house, the family business. The days pass by with the feeling that she's forgotten something important.
Kanae: This is the hand drum.
Kanae: Try picking up the middle here.
Kanae: Pull that from the bottom up.
こう?
Kid: Like this?
Kanae: That's right.
Kid: Oh, it's back.
Kanae: Yup.
Kanae: It's called the bunbuku chagama
Kid: Bunbuku chagama~
Kid: Oh, it's the phone.
Kid: Well, see you later, goodnight-
Kanae: Goodnight, be careful on the way back.

Kanae: Oh Kanno (Sugano)? Yes, I'm fine.
Kanae: Yes... Yes...

Kanno: Like, this guy is working at a detective agency- one of the big ones.
Kanno: Yeah, my husband's place doesn't search for people after all and this guy seems to be a really old acquaintance
え。。。でも
Kanae: Um... But
Kanae: I'm already requesting an investigation by the police, even if we're talking about a detective...
Kanno: You can't count on something like the police. An adult has gone missing? There are countless people like that. Unless there's a possiblity of a crime they won't do anything for you.
Kanae: But it has got to cost a lot of money...
Kanno: Ah, don't worry about that.
4
Kanno: This guy seems to have borrowed a lot from my husband so he said he'll work for you if you just cover the expenses.
Oldman: Goodnight

Kanae: Thank you
Kanae: Eh-? But I can't do something like that.
Kanno: It'll be fine, don't worry about it.
Kanno: It's not like you can really do anything, aren't you at an impasse right now?
Kanno: So wouldn't ti be fine if just tried hiring a detective or something?
Kanno: Or would you rather stay like how you are now? That's not it right?
Kanae: That's true but...
Kanno: Anyways, I've already talked to him already, so why don't you just try meeting him and talking it over.
うん。。。
Kanae: Okay...
Kanno: Then, would lunch time tomorrow be alright?
Kanae: It's fine...
Kanno: Then, tomorrow at 12 at that cafe we went to, he said he'll have an envelope with his company's name so you know it's him
5
Kanno: Bring a couple of pictures of Satoru-san. Oh, and his name is Yamazaki.
。。 写真。。。 。。
Kanae: Envelope... Pictures... Yamazaki...
Kanae: Alright. Anyways, I'll give it a try. At noon, right?
Kanae: Yes, Thanks for everything. Give my regards to your husband.
Kanae: Hori-san
はい
Hori: Yes?
Kanae: I'm going to be out tomorrow from noon. I should be back around 3.

Kanae: If it looks like I'm going to be late, I'll contact you.

Hori: Okay.

Kanae: Are you Yamazaki-san?
9

Man: No, I'm not.

Kanae: Ah, I'm really sorry! I made a mistake.
いえ

Kanae: Yes...
11

Yamazaki: Uhhh.... huh?
あら?
Yamazaki: What?
Yamazaki: Ahh darn it!
Yamazaki: Sorry, It seems like I'm out of business cards right now.
Yamazaki: I'll write it out here for now
。。。はあ
Kanae: ... Okay.
Yamazaki: I'm Yamazaki, but actually it's read "Yamasaki"
Yamazaki: Like Hama-chan from "Tsuribaka Nisshi"but everyone calls me Yamazaki
Kanae: ... so what shall I refer to you as?
Yamazaki: Ah it doesn't matter, call me whichever you like.
12
Yamazaki: He didn't have any trouble with money, women, or any other individuals...
Yamazaki: For the time being let's just say nothing that can be confirmed by you, his spouse.
Yamazaki: And no particular problems as a couple.
Yamazaki: And there's nothing that your husband left behind that could be used as a clue, huh?
Yamazaki: Like letters or a journal...
Kanae: The only things like letters were ordinary post cards. He didn't have a journal.
Yamazaki: Nothing at all? You never peeked at your husband's cell phone's call list or anything?
Kanae: I don't do things like that!
13
Yamazaki: Hrmm...
Kanae: This guy is somehow similar to Hori-san...
Yamazaki: Crabs...
は?
Kanae: Huh?
Yamazaki: Your husband liked crabs didn't he?
Yamazaki: And he was a former ice hockey player!
Kanae: ... I think he liked crabs to a normal degree, but...
Kanae: He wasn't an ice hockey player...
Yamazaki: Hrm.
Yamazaki: a hit and a miss, huh?
14
じー
Kanae: *stare*
Yamazaki: You know, I was thinking this the whole time while I was listening to your story but, it hard to see it that way.
Yamazaki: The personality of your husband, Satoru-san, that is.
Yamazaki: Getting along well with people, being helpful, having a sense of responsibility
Yamazaki: That's got absolutely nothing to do with this person doing something that people are capable of
Yamazaki: Or rather, it's only something that he fabricated in order to not show you something in his past
Yamazaki: As far as I can tell from what you said, to me, the only image that comes to mind is that he manufactured a facade so as to not show the edges of his actual self.
15
Kanae: ... You speak quite frankly.
Kanae: You haven't even met Satoru-san before. You're deciding something like that without understanding him.
Yamazaki: Yes, I haven't met him before.
Yamazaki: Then, as a person who was acquainted with him for 4 years and furthermore shared with him 4 years of married life, do you understand him?
それは。。。
Kanae: That... I can't say that I understand everything.
Kanae: But at the very least it ought to understand more than you!
Yamazaki: Hrm... Well then, let me ask you one thing.
Yamazaki: What does it mean to understand someone?
それは。。。 その。。。
Kanae: That's... Um... Passing time together... Understanding the way a person thinks
16
それは。。。 その。。。
Kanae: Erm... Um...
失礼
Yamazaki: Excuse me.
Yamazaki: Yes, this is Yamazaki.
Kanae: I mean, we're just using fire wood now but I think sooner or later we should make it possible to use oil as well.
Kanae: My dad was also thinking that so he built that tank in the garden so we'll just buy a burner
17
Kanae: We're doing it by ourselves (with Auntie) so it's fine, but if we have kids won't it be a real bother?
Kanae: Oil is more expensive but it doesn't require much labor...
Kanae: Well... It's just talk about the future.
Kanae: ... What is it?
Satoru: It's nothing.
Yamazaki: Ma'am?
Yamazaki: Ma'am?
18
。。。はい
Kanae: ... Yes?
Yamazaki: Are you alright?
Yamazaki: You don't look too well
Kanae: No... I'm okay.
Yamazaki: Well let's stop here today, you must be tired out.
Yamazaki: For the time being I'll go check out his last known whereabouts, the trip destination, Kyoto. But that was 4 months ago so the prospects don't seem too bright.
Yamazaki: More importantly, I spoke about it before but I'll be looking into the places, areas, and people that were related to your husband. I can't say that I'll be able to find anything out from that but I'll give it a shot anyways.
19
それで。。。 。。
Kanae: And... um... what should I do about the money...
Yamazaki: Didn't you hear from Nishimura-san's wife? I'll only be asking you to cover the expenses so I'll bill you later
あの。。。
Kanae: Um... I've never hired a detective before but is that really normal?
Yamazaki: No, not at all. For a normal fee it could even cost a tens of thousands of yen per day.
Yamazaki: Well, I can't even look Nishimura-san in the eyes. If he requested it then I can't refuse. I've received a lot of loans from him.
Yamazaki: There'll be times where I'll have other jobs so I can't say I'll be able to devote all my time to this one but...
Yamazaki: For now lets set the time limit for 3 months, we'll meet to discuss what to do afterwards at that time.
Yamazaki: I'll give you a progress report once every two weeks. Can I contact you on your cellphone?
はい。。。
Kanae: Yes...
20
Yamazaki: If you find out anything new please contact me on my cellphone whenever.
Kanae: Alright.
Yamazaki: I said some things that might have got on your nerves so please forgive me.
Kanae: No... It's okay.
では
Yamazaki: Then I'll be off
あの。。。
Kanae: Um...
Kanae: Yamazaki-san
Yamazaki: What is it?
21
Kanae: Um... Sorry but...
Kanae: ... If there was a woman who was lived together with Yamazaki-san for many years, if you left that person without saying anything, would it definitely be because of the woman?
Kanae: If you felt like that person didn't understand you at all would you give up trying to explain and just leave?
Yamazaki: ... That's tough.
Yamazaki: If I were imitating the prime minister, I'd say "I can't answer hypothetical questions."
Yamazaki: But if I were going to break up with a girl for some reason, before we broke up I'd tell her profusely about the reason why
Yamazaki: I can only think of leaving without saying anything as immature narcissism.
22
Yamazaki: If it were the case that I had some kind of trouble that I didn't want to get that woman involved in and there was something that I didn't want her to know... In that case I might disappear without saying anything.
Yamazaki: And then there's the situation that's most often thought about, that he ran because of another woman. But I think that would be bound to be discovered.
Yamazaki: Well, you really shouldn't think about these hypothetical situations, as long they're not rooted in anything, no matter how many you think of, it won't lead anywhere.
Yamazaki: But, you know...
Yamazaki: Maybe he really wanted to tell you.
23
Yamazaki: Maybe he wanted to confess everything and wanted you to understand, but he couldn't put it to words and didn't have the confidence to explain.
Yamazaki: And while that feeling of powerless continued, he started to want to throw it all away and left... Well, but that's another hypothetical.
Yamazaki: In the end, it's pointless to think this and that way about things you don't know.
Yamazaki: The things you don't know, you just don't know. The things you do know, you know them as they are.
Kanae: I'm sorry, thank you very much.
Yamazaki: It's nothing.
Yamazaki: Ma'am
Yamazaki: How about you?
Yamazaki: Did he understand who you truly are?
26
What does it mean to understand someone?
Somehow, she intended to stay the victim. The sudden confrontation of the possibility of it being her own error is heavy indeed.
Notes:
And here's the introduction of the great character who might seem familiar from the chapters of Coffee Jikan. He seems pretty similar in attitude to the director in chapter 1, and in appearance to that detective in 2. He's a really funny character that has a lot of interesting sequences later on.

Don't really know what the significance of the reference to the PM is.
