A mood with a quiet and deep atmosphere. The wife goes to the amusement park, the 8th chapter.

何が起きたのか理解できなければ、傷が癒えなければ、歩き出せないと思っていた。
She thought that if she can't understand what had happened and if her wound's didn't heal then she wouldn't be able to move on.

堀を紹介してくれた銭湯組合の知人。挨拶に寄ったかなえが知らされたのは。。。
[Enter] the acquaintance from the bath house association that introduced Hori. Kanae, who drops in to say hello, learns that...

大村さん、　この度は退院おめでとうございます
Kanae: Oomura-san, I came to congratulate on your discharge from the hospital.
よー　かなえちゃん　元気？
Oomura: Oh Kanae-chan, How are you?

ほんと急な入院でびっくりしました
Kanae: You were hospitalized so suddenly that it surprised me.

手伝いの人　紹介して貰ったお礼をいおうと思ってたりきなりなんですもの
Kanae: I wanted to come by and thank you for introducing someone to help, but then that happened
いや　なにはっはっはっ
Oomura: It was nothing major, hahaha

遅れましたが　ありがとうございました本当に助かりました
Kanae: It's overdue but, thank you very much, you really helped me out
おおー　彼はちゃんとやってますか
Oomura: Oh- Is he doing a good job?
ええよく働いてくれてます
Kanae: Yes, he's working hard.
おおー　そうか　そうか
Oomura: Oh- is that right, is that right.

まあ　彼も自分で売り込んできたくらいだから　やる気はあったんだろうねえ
Oomura: Well, he pretty much put himself out there so it figures he'd be motivated

。。。売り込むってどういうことですか？
Kanae: "Put himself out there"? What do you mean?
あれ？　聴いてないかい？　彼　最初から　お宅ん所いきたいっていってきたんだよ
Oomura: Huh? You didn't hear about it? From the very start he came in saying he wanted to to go to your place

月の湯で人手がなくて閉まってるみたいだから自分がそこで働きたいって
Oomura: He said that Tsuki no Yu didn't have any help and it seemed like it was going to close so he wanted to go work there himself

。。。堀さんそんなことひと言もいってなかった
Kanae: ... Hori-san never said a single word about that.

あ　そうなの　ま　わざわざ言うこともないと思ったんじゃないの
Oomura: Ah really? Well, he probably didn't think there was any reason to specifically to say so
はあ。。。
Kanae: Hmm...

Kanae: ... No, it's nothing

あの　明日またお昼に出かけます
Kanae: Um, I'm going out again tomorrow afternoon

Yamazaki: Hi It's Yamazaki.

あ　山崎さんどこにいるんですか？
Kanae: Ah, Yamazaki-san, where are you?
そのまま真っすぐ歩いてください
Yamazaki: Please just keep on walking straight
え？まっすぐですか？
Kanae: Eh? Straight?
そうそう　そしたら前に風船を売ってる店が見えませんか？
Yamazaki: That's right. Do you see a store selling balloons in front of you?
あ　ありますけど
Kanae: Ah, there it is...

そこで赤と黄色の風船を買ってください
Yamazaki: Please buy a red and yellow balloon there please

え？　どうしてですか？
Kanae: Huh? Why?
買ったらそれを持って回転木馬の進行方向へ沿って歩いてください
Yamazaki: After you buy them, bring them and walk in the direction towards the carousel please
はあ？？
Kanae: What??

それであとはどうすればいいですか？
Kanae: And then? What should I do after that?
もう少し行くと回転木馬の入り口がありますからそこから木馬に乗ってください
Yamazaki: There will be an entrance to the carousel when you walk a little further so ride the wooden horsies there please.
えーっ！？
Kanae: Eh-!?

あのね山崎さんふざけないー
Kanae: Um, Yamazaki-san stop messing-
また連絡します　それでは
Yamazaki: I'll contact you again. Until next time.

おつかれさまそれでは太陽と反対の方向を見上げてください
Yamazaki: Good work. Now please look up in the direction opposite of the sun

そこから観覧車が見えますね
Yamazaki: From there you can see a Ferris wheel, right?

Kanae: I see it

ではそちらに向かって歩いてください
Yamazaki: Then please walk over in that direction
。。。　本当変わった人。。。
Kanae: ... He is really a strange person...

回転木馬なんて２０年ぶりにのったよ！
Kanae: I haven't ridden on one of those carousels in 20 years!!
はい風船！
Kanae: Here, your balloons!
あ　どうも
Yamazaki: Oh, Thanks.

今度はコイツに乗りましょう
Yamazaki: Let's ride this next

なんでこんな回りくどいことしたんですか？
Kanae: Why did you have me do something so convoluted?
いや今日であなたとあうのも最後かもしれないので　少しでも長く遠くから見てようと思いまして
Yamazaki: Well, today might be the last time I see you so I thought, even if for just a little while, I'd observe you from far away
。。。山崎さんて本当に変な人だね
Kanae: ... You really are a strange person, aren't you

でも木馬は気持ちよかったでしょう？
Yamazaki: But didn't it feel nice on the carousel?

うん　本当いうと楽しかった
Kanae: Yes, to be honest, it was fun.
遊園地なんて　子供の頃何回か連れてきて貰っただけだから
Kanae: When I child there were only a few times that I was taken to places like an amusement park

最近はどうですか 特に変わったことありませんか？
Yamazaki: How have you been recently? Has anything in particular changed?

え。。。と　そうですね特にないと思います
Kanae: U-m Hmm I don't think anything especially has
彼からも何の連絡もありませんし
Kanae: There hasn't been any contact from him anyways
そうですか
Yamazaki: I see

ーで最終的な報告ですが
Yamazaki: -Then this is something like my final report...

彼の口座は失踪当日全額引き出されていて　その後今日まで入金等の動きはありませんでした
Yamazaki: On the exact day of his disappearance his bank account was completely withdrawn. From that day onwards until today, there have been no changes to it, such as deposits.
まあ　あまり合法的な調査ではないんですが　ちょくちょく引き出されたりすれば場所を絞りこめるんですけどね
Yamazaki: Well, it's wasn't really a legal method of investigation but if he were secretly doing something like withdrawing money we'd be able to figure out the location.

彼の主な友人知人親戚等も接触した　形跡は見られませんでした
Yamazaki:Evidence that he contacted any of his principle friends, associates, relatives, etc was not found.
まあ　全箇所　見張ってるわけではないので　限界があるわけですけど
Yamazaki: Though it's not like I was watching over every little nook and cranny so there are limits to that...

彼の郷里やよくバイトしてた　スキー場も近寄ってないみたいですねえ
Yamazaki: It also seems that he hasn't been to his home town or the skiing area he often worked part time at
死んでいるのでないならば　確実に過去を絶とうとしてるみたいですね。。。　あるいは足がつくのを恐れているのか
Yamazaki: If he's not dead then it certainly seems that he's trying to sever himself from his past... Or perhaps he's afraid of being traced

。。。彼はどうやって生活しているんでしょう
Kanae: ... I wonder what he is doing to get by

そうですね　彼の口座にはそこそこ入っていたみたいですが　そんな逃亡生活みたいな暮らしじゃ　すぐ底をつきますからね
Yamazaki: Well, there seemed to be just the bare minimum in his bank account so if he were living like he was on the run then it would hit rock bottom pretty fast.
焼けた彼の実家も借家だったようで相続する財産も特になかったようだし
Yamazaki: It looks like his parent's house which burned down was rented as well so it appears that there weren't any particular assets to inherit.

もっとも彼はまだ若いし　仕事さえ選ばなきゃ身元が不確かでも雇ってくれる所はけっこうありますからね
Yamazaki: But then again, he is still quite young. If he but choose to work, there are plenty of places that would hire him even with an unclear background

まあ大きな都市部に限られますが
Yamazaki: But that's in the case of big cities

それから彼の女性関係ですがー
Yamazaki: And then there's his relationship with women but-

ここ数年間ー　あなたと結婚してからですけど　僕の調べた限り女性の影はないですね
Yamazaki: These several past years- after getting married to you- There was no sign of another woman as far as I could determine
ただ彼が会社で働いてた頃ー　この頃はあなたと付き合っていたわけですが
Yamazaki: However, when he was still working at his company- at that time he was dating you...

同僚に仲の良い女性がいたようです
Yamazaki: There seemed to be a female co-worker he got along well with

もちろん彼女の所にいませんでしたよ
Yamazaki: Of course he wasn't at her place
彼が会社を辞めてから接触はないようです
Yamazaki: After he quit the company it doesn't seem like they had any contact

で　この女性に以前会社の金を横領したという疑惑がかかったんですね
Yamazaki: And this woman had been suspected for misappropriation of company funds previously but...

Kanae: Misappropriation?
ええ　使い込みですね　それで非常に立場が悪くなったと
Yamazaki: Yes, embezzlement. And it was a extremely severe situation.

で　その時　彼が自ら疑惑をかぶったそうです
Yamazaki: And at that time, he, himself, was also placed under suspicion.
疑惑をかぶった。。。
Kanae: Placed under suspicion...

彼女には長期療養している　母親がいてそこを辞めるわけにはいかなかったようです
Yamazaki: This woman apparently had a mother who was undergoing long term medical treatment so she couldn't quit
で　彼が一人で罪をかぶって会社を辞めたと。。。　同僚はそう認識しているようです
Yamazaki: So he took the blame and quit himself... or so it seems, as confirmed by his co-worker.

奥さんそのこと知ってました？
Yamazaki: Ma'am were you aware of this?
。。。　いいえ
Kanae: ... No.

でも結婚式に会社の人間を誰も呼ばなかったので不思議に思ったことはあったんですけど。。。　そんなことが
Kanae: But I do remember thinking that there was something strange about him not inviting anyone from his company to the wedding ceremony... That sort of thing

しかし両親のことといい　この件といい　意外と大事なこと彼はあなたにしゃべってないですね
Yamazaki: However, concerning his parents and that issue, he didn't talk to you about these surprisingly important issues
彼はこう内に秘めるダイプだったんですか？
Yamazaki: Was he the type to keep secrets to himself?

。。。彼がどういう人間だったか正直いってよくわからなくなってきてるんです
Kanae: ... As for what kind of person he is, I honestly can't say I really know that well anymore
彼はいろんなこと私に話してくれましたよ　でも本当に大事なことは話してなかったのかもしれない
Kanae: I mean, he talked to me about all sorts of things. But perhaps he didn't talk to me about anything really important at all.

今　思い出すと　時々　彼は私に何か　重要なことを伝えたがってたように思うんです
Kanae: When I try to recall now, I remember him as seeming to sometimes want to tell me something important
ちょっとした表情とか間とか。。。　沈黙とかそういったものを私も感じてたと思います
Kanae: His slight expressions or his pauses... I think I had felt he was saying that with his reticence

でも日々の暮らしの中でそういうものも顧みなくなっていたんですね。。。　いいわけですけど
Kanae: But with the things going on my every day life I didn't want to take the time to reflect on that sort of thing anymore... but that's just an excuse

Yamazaki: No, I understand, every day life is just that sort of thing
銭湯の仕事は大変ですものね
Yamazaki: Running a bath house is a tough job.

失礼ですけど　最初あったとき手がだいぶ荒れてましたよね　今はそうでもないけど
Yamazaki: I might be being rude but, when I first met you, your hands were pretty rough. That's not the case anymore though

。。。彼がいなくなってから　ほとんどの作業を一人でやってましたからね
Kanae: ... After he disappeared, I was doing all the work by myself, so...
今は手伝いの人がいるので　だいぶ楽になりましたけど
Kanae: But right now there's someone helping me so for the most part it's gotten easier.

彼が戻らなくても銭湯は続けるんですか
Yamazaki: Are you going to continue with the bath house even if he doesn't come back?

そうですね　前はやめることも考えてたんですけど。。。
Kanae: Yeah, I had thought about quitting before but...
やっぱりこの仕事が好きだし続けられるうちは続けようと思います
Kanae: In the end, I really like this job so I think I want to try to continue while I'm able to.

で　３ヵ月たったわけですけど
Yamazaki: So, 3 months have passed

どうします？　調査を継続しますか？　もっともあとやれることは定期的に前行った所を調べるぐらいですけど
Yamazaki: What do you want to do? Shall I continue with the investigation? Though all I can do after this is to periodically check the places I've already gone to before.
いえ　もう　結構です
Kanae: No, this is enough.

彼はもう戻る意思はないみたいだし。。。
Kanae: It seems like he has no intent of returning after all...
そのことが　全てなのかもしれませんね
Kanae: And that may have been what it was all about

彼がいなくなって驚いて悲しんで怒って傷つきましたけど不思議とそれほど彼のことを憎んでないんです
Kanae: When he disappeared I was shocked, sad, angered, and wounded but, it's strange, I don't even hate him that much
許せるかといったらもちろん許せないんですけど。。。
Kanae: As for whether I could forgive him, Of course I couldn't but...

それは　私が彼の本当の部分に触れてなかったという思いがあるからなのかもしれない
Kanae: Perhaps that is because I feel like I didn't grasp a part of who he really was
彼をわかっているつもりでもそうではなかった　彼とちゃんとつきあってるつもりでもそうでなかった。。。
Kanae: It was like I wasn't really trying to understand him. It was like I wasn't really trying to get to know him properly.

Kanae: You asked me before, "What does it mean to understand someone?"

本当いいますとね失踪人というのはなかなか見つからないんですよ
Yamazaki: To be honest, people who disappear aren't generally found
まあ僕もおざなりな調査をしたわけではないんですが　見つけられる可能性は低いです
Yamazaki: Well, it's not like I did a half ass investigation but the possibility of finding him is low.

日本では年間十万人以上が失踪してるらしいですからね
Yamazaki: In Japan, in the span of one year, it seems that more than 100,000 people disappear.

Kanae: That many...

人の存在なんてはかないもんです
Yamazaki: The existence of a person is transient

Kanae: That's not it, Um... no, about the unemployment rate. Uhhh, that's not it either...!!

変わらない距離、回復しつつある日常。ただ、なにひとつ解決したわけでも変わったわけでもない。
An unchanging distance, a mending commonplace. Even if one thing has been resolved, it's not like it would change.

かなえは思い知らされる。-次号。

The phrase isn't a complete sentence but it's lacking a verb in the Japanese :|

This whole part is pretty cute. With the sfx and the way the pages are laid out, I almost expected something to happen just like Kanae did probably. When Hori totally denies it I pretty much felt like Kanae splashing around in frustration too... hahaha The pathos in this work is pretty amazing
