Doctors... What are we anyways...?
=It's been a week—
=And I still don't have my answer...

#2: Eels in God's Hands
=I'm not able to come to the phone.
=Please leave a message after the beep.
=Hey—It's Ushida from Seido Hospital
=The director wanted to know if you could do night-duty again—
=Give me a call when you get this message.
=I'll call again later.
=One week ago—//I ran off during night-duty, leaving a dying patient.
=If the director hadn't shown up, that patient would definitely be dead...
=He would have died on his own...
=You might as well cut his stomach open...
=I...
=Am still unable to leave this room...
<33>
=I just wanna go back home—!!

=July—
=My life at the university hospital continues.
=All right... Now that we're in July...
=You interns are done with your 3 months of basic training...//Now you'll be starting some specialized work.
=You seven will be interning in the first surgical department.
=Kuniya Dekune.
=Eijiro Saito.
<34>
=Good morning—!
=It's time to take blood samples—!
=PSHHH...
=Hey Doc, you guys make a lotta money, right?
=You wanna come meet my daughter—?
=Why does everyone think doctors are rich?
=My monthly salary is 38,000 yen!//I can't even pay the rent unless I do night shifts!
=Don't come complaining to me, Saito.
[x2]SPLASH
=Come on in when you're ready.
=We'll begin shortly—
=For those of you who don't know, university hospitals are special hospitals that are involved in education, research, and consultation.
=They're affiliated with the medical department—//Which means university hospitals...
=Do not exist for the sole purpose of curing patients.

=Today's patient is a 75 year-old male.
=Cirrhosis, caused by an aneurysm in the esophagus, has rendered him comatose.
<35>
=I am currently in the first surgical department.
=Which mostly deals with surgery on the esophagus, stomach, intenstines, and liver.
=There are two types of internships available at university hospitals.
=In the first type, interns pick their department at the beginning and stay there.
=In the other, interns rotate around different departments throughout their 2 years of training.
=Eiroku University Hospital offers the rotating internship.
=So we switch around every 2~3 months and study in all kinds of departments.
=And during those 2 years.
=We must choose our own field of expertise.
=Professor Kasukabe will be arriving shortly.
=The professor will personally operate for us today.

=Professor Kasukabe, aka God's Hands.
=The Miracle of Eidai. Not a single surgery of his has gone wrong over the past 30 years.

=Feels quite different from an eel.
=A remarkable incision, professor.
=Hmph.
=I'll leave the rest to you.
=I will return to my research.
PATHUMP...
=Let's continue the surgery.
=You, get back over here.
=What was that...?
=Just now...?
<38>
=This doctor...
=He isn't fast, but he's really careful with his work...
=I definitely wouldn't come to a university hospital if I were sick, ...
[x3]MUNCH
=I mean, we'd be butt-naked on the table.
=And have interns like us see our dicks, right...?
=Hey, Saitoh—
=Let's go group dating... I'm sick of looking at dicks—
=I can't...
=I don't have the time or the money.
=Then just do that night-duty thing again.
=You get 80,000 yen each night, right?
<39>
=I can't...
=Hey, Dekune-kun...
=What was the point of the professor showing up at that operation...?
=I've heard rumors that incisions are the only thing he does...
=He just dissects eels all day...
=But he's never made an operating mistake in 30 years, right...?
=Incisions for 30 years...
=Yeah, he probably hasn't made any mistakes...

=Guess being a professor...
=Has nothing to do with being a good doctor...
=The people who write a thesis and get a doctorate...
=Just keep researching and churning out papers and become professors.
=The people that run around the hospital for their patients...
=Keep honing their skills, and can't become professors...
<40>
=But...
=Why does he even try if he's not confident in his skills?
=He's still a "professor..."
=There must be some kind of reason...
=It's the money.
=The professor received about a million yen from the patient's family.
=The family must have been content knowing an Eidai professor would be the one operating...
=Oh...
=You're the doctor who was operating just now...
=I'm Takahisa Shiratori from the first surgical department.
=I'm going to be your instructor from now on.
=Come with me after you're finished.
=There's some work I need you to do this afternoon.
<41>
=This patient...
=Is the one that was in the operating room just now...
=His condition is stable for now.
=But it'll be unlikely for him to ever recover consciousness.
=Comatose from a serious liver disorder...
=The aneurysm in the esophagus has caused serious internal bleeding and damage...
=Dr. Saito,
=I'm placing you in charge of this patient.
=Inject him with Lasix (a diuretic) to keep the urine flow and write his post-surgical report.
=That will be all for now.
=Dr. Dekune.
=I'll introduce you to your patient later.
=Oh...
=I'm doing this alone...?
=What are you talking about...?
=All hospitals have their interns handle these things on their own.
<42>
=The only doctor in charge of this patient—
=Is you.
=Today—
=I've officially been put in charge of a patient for the first time...
=My mission is to protect this old man's life...
=Toshio Kaneko, age 75—
=Brought in after falling unconscious at his home yesterday.
=This person's life...
=Is in my hands...
=You're a doctor...
=Doesn't matter if you're a rookie, to the patients, you're still the doctor.
=This is a test...
<43>
=A test to see if I can become...
=A real doctor...!!
