Chapter 17 - To Live, To Kill
63)
1: chirp...
2: chirp chirp...
3: Ahhh! Dammit...
4: I missed again!!
5: I miss no matter how many times I try. My target is too small.
6: And there are so many birds around here, too...
7(2b): I'm almost completely out of food. This--
8: means I'm finally going to have to start eating things I'm not used to.
64)
1: Sei has become used to eating fish, bananas, and mountain plants thus far. He's been able to eat "normal" things.
2: But in survival situations, one could say those conditions are rare.
3: One eats not food they like or food based on taste,
4: but whatever is ediible
5: This small machete from the shed really works well...it's much easier to walk through the bushes now.
6: And this belt too...
7: The only thing I can hunt that's edible now...
8: are these...
9: Grasshoppers have been used as food sources since ancient times (along with locusts). They are filled with protein and fats.
10: Patanga Japonica
11: Genus: Patanaga, Family: Catantopidae. They are found on the Honshuu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and southwestern archipelagos of Japan.
12: Unlike short-winged cormorants, which are often preserved in soy and eaten, these are often found in high grass areas and shrubs.
65)
1: When eating them, it's a good idea to cook them to make sure one doesn't ingest any parasites.
2: These are surprisingly edible...
3: I tried to kill myself, and now I've resorted to eating grasshoppers in order to survive...
4: So strange.
5: For what purpose...?
6(2b): No...it's not like that.
7: This isn't for any purpose...that's a societal way of thinking.
8: Here--
9: I live
10: to live.
11: There is no purpose.
12: It isn't for joy
13: or happiness.
14: I simply
15: live
16: in order
17: to live.
66)
1: There are a lot of big trees here.
2: Maybe--...
3: I knew it!
4: Calibyum nuts! I'm saved.
5: Feces? ...this means...
6: The deer!
7: These are deer droppings!!
8: Looking closely, I can see them all over...
9(2b): I see...so the deer came here in order to eat the calibym nuts!
10: If I move using their feeding areas as points, then the probability that I meet them should increase.
11(2b): The water source...to their feeding area. Droppings...I need to pay more attention as I continue...
12: I got excited.
13: Just when my heart was about to break, I was able to find the vestiges of it.
14: And the motivation I had lost returned once more.
67)
1: The probability that I run into them is high.
2: All that's left now
3: is this bow.
4: I did a lot of trial and error shooting through tatami mats, and built up its power.
5: It's my bow.
6: I had expectations for it.
7: But the deer I thought I had shot ran away.
8: Why...
9: What did I do wrong?
10: Power...if there's a problem with the power,
11: then maybe it was the spot I hit...
12: If I shoot its head, it should fall.
13: What about its legs?
14: No, legs and heads move around a lot, and I don't have the skill to hit them.
15: The target is too small...if only I could get closer.
16: If I pierce its stomach, I should hit its intestines and do mortal damage...
17: But it may be able to still run for a while...something...something else...
18: Senpai--
68)
1: What's that? It looks like an animal diagram.
2: Oh, this...
3: Overseas, these are quite common. They're used in competitions similar to hunting.
4: The closer you get to the vital point, the more points you get.
5: That's pretty violent...
6: Yeah.
7: The target...closer to the vital point...
8: Wait a minute?!
9: Why...why are the targets close to the area behind the front legs?
10: Each one was like that...
11: Ahh!!
12: The heart...that's
13: where the heart is!!!
14: I need to shoot the heart
15: to kill it...
16: I see.
17: That has to be it...
69)
1: I should have understood.
2: That's what hunting means.
3: It isn't something naive or sentimental.
4: Kill
5: in order to eat meat.
6: That's why I made this tool,
7: That's why I'm chasing it.
8: I know...!
9: I know...but...
10: Pierce the heart
11: And kill.
12: What...
13: does that feel like...
14: Get ahold of yourself!
15: I'm following through with this...to the end.
16: That's what I decided.
70)
1: I made it to the knoll by the ocean when the sun began to descend.
2: This is the point where I have the greatest probability of seeing them.
3: Seeing this place more closely,
4: I found tracks showing the deer had been here.
5: Once I decided on a shooting spot and hid myself,
6: the sun had already started to set.
7: They probably won't
8: appear anymore today.
9: I decided to rest after preparing my bow and finishing my preparations.
10: So that the deer wouldn't be alerted by the smell,
11: I didn't make a fire.
12: Darkness came quickly.
13: Can I...really do this...?
14: No, that's not right.
15: Do I
16: have the right to do this...?
71)
1: Kill that beautiful, pure
2: existence?
3: I threw away my life once.
4: And now I'm going to take another's?
5: You don't have the right...not a bit...
6: You can't do it...right...?
7: That may be true. I may be mistaken.
8: This may be...fruitless...
9: While I questioned myself over and over,
10: possibly from all the work I did in the afternoon,
11: I fell right asleep.
12: Without finding an answer--...
13: No, I'm sure...
14: That even if I continue forward
15: I will find
16: no answer.
72)
1: The sun rose
2: and my surroundings became bright.
3: I wait.
3: wait for them
4: wait to live,
5: wait to kill.
