Chapter 21 - No Man's Island
1: No man's island...?!
6)
1: What are you....come on! Y-you must have killed a number of people if you were sent here.
2: O-otherwise--...
3(2b): I haven't killed a soul...why? What's this about a no man's island...
4: What's going on here...? You really haven't killed anyone?
5: You don't look like a killer, but...
6: What?
7: What do you mean?!
8(2b): This is an island for banishment.
9: Banish...ment?
7)
1: Years ago...there was a time when the anti-death penalty movement was at its peak, right? And simultaneously, brutalities were increasing at rapid rates...and even though this country doesn't even have what's known as a "life sentence," the prisons were absolutely full.
2: And then...a top secret program that was a reform in name only was put into execution!!
3: A reform...program...?
4: I-it wasn't that!! It wasn't a reform program at all!!
5: Th-this country...
6: It took the deep pool of vile criminals it had...criminals that should have been put to death--...
7: a-and banished them onto this island!!!
8)
1: This...lawless island.
2: But...t...that's...
3: the same as...
4: They thought that if they put people in a place where they would be forced to work together in order to survive, that they would!
5: No matter WHAT kind of people they were. Makes me laugh...
6: What do you think happened?
9)
1: It was Hell!!!
2(2b): Rape, steal, kill! The country just threw their beasts out into the field!!
3(2b): Most people couldn't make it through the first winter. And the ones that did just killed each other off...
4: Right after the fighting started, I ran into the mountains and somehow managed to survive.
5: Heh. Did I scare you...? Relax.
6(2b): I'm a murderer, but I'm small-time. I realized that after coming here.
10)
1: So...what did you do?
2: They wouldn't have sent you here for nothing.
3: ....I...committed suicide...but I failed, repeatedly...
4: The ones who came with me are all the same.
5: Wh
6: Whaat...!!?
7: ...no.
8: I suppose...I can understand.
9: The crime and suicide rates have been going up ever since I was out in society.
10: If I hadn't taken up killing...I might have just killed myself...
11)
1: I thought the same...that if I hadn't chosen suicide--
2: would I have killed someone else instead...?
3: I can't say for sure.
4: This country is getting crazier and crazier...no
5(2b): In the end, I'm not even sure what's crazy and what isn't.
12)
1: Hey, come on, you'll rip it.
2: Gonna head out already?
3: Yeah.
4: I'd like to reach the hut on the mountain by nightfall.
5: Th...there might only be fighting waiting for you after you return, you know...? People are like that.
6: Wh...when they get backed up against a wall, they'll...do anything.
13)
1: W-well? How about...staying here?
2: Eh...
3: Y-yeah! You go get the meat, and I'll handle the veggies...see?
4: How about it?! I think we could do pretty well together!!
5: ...u-umm...I'm sorry...
6: But I told my friends that I would definitely return...
7: I'm sorry...even though you're asking me like this...
8: Ahh, naw, it's alright. (Just thought I'd try...)
9: W-well, it IS easy to l...live alone...
10: He was smiling, but
11: I think his life alone in the mountains was a very tough one.
14)
1: I invited him to come with me, but he said he didn't want to. And then--
2: he said he wanted me to keep him and his hut a secret.
3: He told me about a mountain path to take on my way back.
4: The mountain path was around the top, so it would involve climbing,
5: but it would be quicker than getting lost.
6: He also suggested I go looking for abandoned farm fields when I returned.
7: That we could apparently find produce (like potatoes and stuff) in the grass.
8: He said he made his fields from gathering up vegetables and planting them in wild grass.
15)
1: He was a nice person. He didn't seem like a criminal.
2: Did he change too
3: after coming to this island?
4: Alright.
5: Let's go!
6: Thank you for everything.
7: Y...yeah, take care...
16)
He--
2: watched me go
3: until we could no longer see each other.
17)
1-3: haa
4: It's a tough walk, just like I imagined...
18)
1: haa
2: hoo
3: haa
4: Hey, c'mon!
5: Don't get between my legs! I'll step on you.
6-8: haa
9: I'm glad you can walk on your own, but at this rate...
10: Doesn't seem like I'm going to make it to the hut today.
11: I need to hurry up and find somewhere to set up camp.
19)
1: Ahh
2: No!
3: Don't do that!
4: Ruff!
5: You're sharp...can you tell it's meat?
6: I need to be careful.
20)
1: I have expectations for you, so...I'm counting on you.
2: I didn't take a puppy when I myself was just barely surviving merely out of sympathy.
3-5: ha
6: The thing I was really feeling remorse about from my hunting was not being able to directly chase the deer after finding their tracks.
7: I imagined there would be more times when after shooting a deer, it would escape in a wounded state.
8: And if it were able to survive after running for a bit, there was a possibility that I would completely lose it.
9: This dog might become a good partner who could directly chase after my prey,
10: thought Sei. And that was certainly not a misjudgment.
21)
1: Dogs have been called excellent hunting partners since the Joumon Period.
2: Since dogs usually hunt in groups, they have a strong ability to communicate with allies while working.
3: Alright, alright. You want to eat meat too, don't you?
4: We'll start your training at once, then!
22)
1: Wait.
2: Wait!!
3: Mealtime is a unique opportunity for training.
4: In order to get food, the dog follows its master's movements closely, remembering signals and instructions.
5: Wait!
23)
1: It's true that the dog may look pitiful, but this is a very important method to use.
2: If this can be continued with praise, awards, and play in between, the training will progress.
3: Then trust and a master-servant relationship will be deepened from this communication.
4(2b): Wait! Waaaait!
5: OK!
6: That's it! Good dog!
7: Ruff!
