top pink: Third chapter of the short-term Shaman King series!!!
1: Look! Look, Horo-Horo!
1995 - Hokkaido
side: This is a story about love. The kind of love you can see completely
through. Faint, fleeting love that melts in your hand in a second.
2: This is Pootan, the bear papa bought for me yesterday!
3: Isn't he cute?
3)
1: ...ummmm, Damko...
2: Can you stop calling me Horo-Horo already?
side: "You're cuter"...a line this boy could never save at his current
age...the first chapter of the new year is this boy's Zero Story!!
3: Horokeu means "Wolf"...a fitting name for the last of a tribe born from
the Wolf Goddess.
4)
text: A hidden tale hidden in burning ice, that can melt through any
closed-off heart.
TANCES WITH WOLVES
5)
1: Why? I think Horo-Horo is a cute name.
bag: 5-1 Kurobe Tamiko
2: You can call me Dam-Dam if you want.
3: ...umm...it's not about whether it's cute or not. I just hate the name
Horokeu!
4: Don't tell me you actually like the nickname Damko? Have you ever tried
to say it yourself? DAMKO!
5: I don't mind.
6)
1: After all,
2: that's who I am.
3: Hm?
7)
1: Kurobe Tamiko--
2(2b): She transferred into this school when her father, who works in
construction, moved here from the city to build a dam in this village.
That's why everyone calls her Damko.
3: If the dam she brought to us was completed, this town would sink into
it.
4: That's why everyone hated her.
sign: RIOT AGAINST THE DAM CONSTRUCTION
Don't destroy our nature!!
8)
1: Are you really satisfied with that girl, brother?
2: Wh...what are you talking about all of a sudden, Pirika?
3: I saw you, you know.
4: You meet with her when no one else is around.
5(2b): I think people would be really angry if they found out. Don't you
ever listen to what grandpa says?
9)
1: "Horokeu."
2(2b): "You must not mingle with the likes of her. She is a foolish human,
come to steal away the land of the gods."
3(2b): "All the blessings of this land are scared. Humans who forget to
thank their gods and willfully pollute this land will eventually perish."
4: "Therefore, we must never mix with the 'People of Wa.'"
10)
1: Yeah, but in reality, who are the real ones who are dying out, Pirika?
2: If you go on saying archaic stuff like that forever, you'll end up
getting crushed by the dam.
3: These days, the gods are irrelevant.
*tl note: the manga is basically supposed to be Danbooru Senki, or 'Little
Battlers' in the west.)
4: ...brother...
5(2b): Besides, this has nothing to do with Damko. She has no other
friends,
6: so she just happens to hang around me.
11)
1(2b): You shouldn't waste all your time making wood carvings, and try
something new for once, Pirika. Otherwise you'll end up the same way dad
did when mom ran out on him.
small: Ma ha ha
2: I'm going out. Later.
3: ...brother...
4: ...seeing my son like that is truly saddening, Pirika.
5(2b): I agree, papa. But this may be the last chance he has to say things
like that.
6: ...but
7: What's wrong, Pirika?
12)
1: Honestly, I get confused sometimes myself
2(2b): about what's right and wrong. And about what's going to happen to
us.
3(2b): Are all the Ainu really going to die out?
4: ...they won't.
13)
1: As long as we keep fighting with our pride in our hearts.
2: Hoooro-horo! Where are you going?
3: Uwaaahh!
4(2b): You again, Damko? Why do you care where about where I'm going?
5: What's that board?
6: ...don't tell anyone about this.
14)
1: Yyyyyyyy
2: yahooooooooooooooo!!!
15)
1: Ha-ha!
2: Waah!
3: Wow!
4: You're really good at snowboarding, Horo-Horo!
5: Heheh!
6(2b): My dream is to become a pro snowboarder, you know. I still only
have this crappy hand-made board, but I was raised in these snowy
mountains, so I've got an advantage!
7: That's your dream?
8(2b): Yeah! Oh, that's right, I have something cool to show you. Follow
me behind this hill, Damko.
16)
1: ...this is...
2: This is a butterbur field. Pretty big, isn't it?
3: ...yeah.
17)
1: It's huge...
2: I mean, it's a big field, but the butterburs themselves are also really
big...
18)
1: Wow...
2: It's like we shrunk or something.
3: Heheh! Apparently these used to be all over the place.
4: But these days, you rarely see them, so my mom always used to bring me
up here when I was a kid.
5: I guess I had a weird family, though.
6: My mom ended up leaving my dad. And I got so sick of being left out, so
I'd always come up here. For some reason it always made me feel better.
19)
1: There's nothing else to do around here, so this mountain is really the
only place where you can play. I just naturally got good at snowboarding
here.
2(2b): It's not like I'd be able to make much money at any other job I
could do. So I just figured, if that's the case, then why not become a pro
snowboarder?
3: ...hey, Horo-Horo...
4: Hm?
5: This is just an idea to pay you back, but...
6: How about we go to see a snowboarding competition downtown?
7: Sounds good.
20)
1: Going downtown together?
2: But...that might be one of those legendary things I've heard so much
about...
3: A DATE!!!
21)
1: Man...I can't believe we actually came all the way down here.
2: To think, the day would come when I could taste the stuff of legends...
3: She'd better not stand me up...
4: This place is really big.
5: And there's so much sparkling stuff. Is this it's like to be in a city?
6: It's kinda hard to relax here.
7: Maybe that's more because of the whole "date" thing.
8: Sorry to keep you waiting, Horo-Horo.
22)
1: Sorry!
2: I couldn't decide what clothes to wear, so I ended up leaving late!
3: Do I look OK...?
4: ...yeah.
23)
1: Ahhhh!
2: What in the world is that face he's making?!
3: Damko-san may have dusted herself off a bit, and is wearing nice
clothes, but don't you think she's dressed a bit too...LEWD? I can hardly
watch her!
4: ...then just go home, Pirika.
5: What are you saying, papa?! This is a grave situation for the Usui
family! I need to keep watch over him!
6: ...are you sure?
7: Get a hold of yourself, papa! You want your son to enter the Shaman
Fight, don't you?
8: ...mmm.
9: Then you need to get your act together! Things like these are the
reason mama left you!
10: ...sorry...
11: ...oh well.
24)
1: He'll probably never get to experience days like this again, so what
can it hurt?
25)
1: I don't mind letting him indulge for today.
26)
1: It's sure...gotten late.
2: ...yeah.
3: My mom'll probably be mad at me when I get home.
4: ...not your dad?
27)
1: He's always working, hardly ever home.
2: Even though you're the one who keep following him around and
transferring schools?
3: I've never hated him.
4: I'm happy that my family can all be together.
5: ...what about you, Horo-Horo?
6(2b): What do you think about my dad? And what he's doing to your
village--
7: ...didn't I tell you? I hate that name.
28)
1: Horokeu -- in our language, it means wolf.
2: Horo means howl, and Keu means 'big mouth'...there may have been some
humor behind the name, but either way, it's the name of a god feared by
many.
3(2b): Why was I named after a god? For some stupid battle that the fate
of my line is resting on.
4(3b): If I win, I'll get some 'great power.' My dad picked me, because
I'm the youngest. He threw the entire future of the family on my
shoulders.
5: Even though
6: we're gonna die out no matter what.
29)
1: ...Horo-Horo.
2(3b): ...don't worry about it. It has nothing to do with your family.
Someone else would have eventually done what your dad's doing, anyway. You
can't stop the flow of the world, no matter how you try.
3: To be honest, this is just a dog-eat-dog world.
4: The people we should be blaming are the old farts who are powerless
because they're so tied to old traditions.
5: I don't feel that way.
30)
1: If you really think that your people are important from the bottom of
your heart, then they won't die.
2: You can't put all the blame on other people, Horo-Horo.
3: Huh?
4: Here.
31)
1(2b): This is a present from me. Snowboards are too expensive, so I
couldn't buy you one of those.
2: Work hard to achieve your dream, Horo-Horo.
3: ...don't blame other people, eh...?
4: ...what a weirdo she is.
5: She gets bullied, yet she acts so bold...I guess girls from the city
really are different.
32)
1: Work hard to achieve your dream,
2: Horo-Horo.
3: Heheh...a girl finally gave me a present!
4: It'd be a waste to open it so soon, so I'm just gonna savor it for a
while.
5: Alriiiight!!!
6: I'm gonna practice hard with my board tomorrow!!
7: The aura underneath my bed is really irritating me...
33)
1: Hey...
2: What's going on?
34)
1: Why...
2: is the field gone?
3: Hey, what are you doing out here, kid?
4: Didn't you see the Keep Out sign? This is the dam construction site.
5: Shut up! Who gave you the permission to do this?!
6: Fwaaah!
35)
1: That hurt! What are you doing?!
2: Give me back the field, you long-haired asshole!!!
3: What?!
4: Huh?!
5: Don't tell me...Damko took me downtown to get me away from here?!
6: Work hard to achieve your dream,
7: Horo-Horo.
8: That's why she said that...
9: In the end...
10: we really are different!
36)
1(2b): ...he hasn't gone snowboarding since then, has he? I can
understand, though...considering what happened.
2: ...yeah...but it's not just because he lost everything.
3: Not just that...?
4: ...He's probably just now realizing what kind of a person he really is,
Pirika.
5(2b): Haha...I can't believe you, Damko.
37)
1(2b): Didn't you say to me once, "That's who I am?"
2: I didn't understand it at all when you first said it, but I think I
sorta get it now.
3: I think
4: I was running away from myself.
5(2b): Because I hated the name Horokeu, and I hated the pressure my
family was putting on me. Snowboarding was just a way to escape from that
responsibility.
6: Proof of that is the fact that I haven't once been out to snowboard
since.
38)
1: But you really impress me, Damko.
2: You don't worry about the good or bad, you just accept yourself for who
you are.
3: ...oh yeah...I forgot, you're dead now.
4: Haha...you're so stupid.
5: I can't believe you chased me all the way into the mountains and got
lost there.
39)
1: You never talk to me anymore.
2: Didn't you promise me we'd go out to the field again in Spring?!
3: Do you just hate me now or something?!
4: Horo-Horo!
5: ...Horo-Horo.
6: After she stopped coming to school, the next time I saw her was in
Spring.
7: The snow had melted, so they finally found her body.
*Taken from Shaman King Kanzenban Vol. 26
8: That's when I learned for the first time that Damko had chased me into
the mountains that day, and got stuck.
40)
1: Just because I had lost a spot I liked, and decided to blame your
family for it...
2: Just because I decided to take refuge in the pride of my people...!!!
3: I deserve
4: to die too.
41)
1: ...goru.
2(2b): ...phew. Thanks, Gororo. I never thought he'd actually throw
himself off...
3: Goru-goru.
4: It'll take a lot of time for him to recover from this.
42)
1: ...but it is only throw knowing pain that people can gain true
strength.
2: I don't care if you abandon your people.
3: As long as you have true strength,
4: the spirit of our people will never die.
5: Brother! Hurry up!
1999 - Hokkaido
43)
1: You have to hurry, or you'll miss the bus to Tokyo!
2(2b): ...yeah, I know. I'm almost ready, so just wait outside, Pirika.
3: ...brother.
4(2b): Heheh...the day has finally come, Damko.
5: Don't worry. I've trained really hard since then.
44)
1: Either way,
2: I finally have a chance now to wear the clothes you gave me.
3(2b): I know. I know you'll win, Horo-Horo.
4: Damko?!
5: Haha...oh, it was just you.
45)
1: Alright!
2: Shall we be off then, Kororo?
3: Kuruh!
side: Pain of the heart, strength to live...that's what she taught him.
