I remember that Tsukishima-san had been hurt
and I stood up thinking I have to get to her
Zan: その後・・・急に胸の鼓動が大きくなってきて・・・

I have yet to read the actual manga but did the fight that Zan just won in chapter 1 have to do with fighting with real swords? I ask because usually the phase "真剣勝負" refers to a "serious duel" where 真剣 would pretty much mean 本気. I just find it odd that the characters are using the phrase 真剣 (in reference to a real sword) and that you're carrying that literal meaning all the way to the phrase 真剣勝負.
Which do you suppose he really means? Just a "serious duel/match" or a "duel/match with real swords"?
forgive me if i get this wrong because i dont know japanese, but i think its both, i think "serious duel/match" would be to just fight with the wooden swords as "duel/match with real swords" would mean a match where somebody could get hurt and cut.
Yup, well I suppose 真剣勝負 originally meant a "match with real swords" only, but that it became a more commonly-used phrase with the additional meaning of a "serious match". (Which is why I guess either translation will make sense >ω<) But 真剣 is a word often used when talking about swords, and when on that subject, I think it can more or less be interpreted automatically into "real swords". (←I hope that makes sense...)
