Otoyomegatari Chapter 20
Page 01
The Aral Sea.
A huge inland sea created by the snow water of the nearby mountains.
Having a lower salt-level than the ocean, this sea is rich on fishes.
Because of that on the coasts various fishing villages, fish markets and fish progressing are flourishing.
This village Munak is one of them.
Fishing has been flourishing here for a long time.
(A big chapter with 48 pages for you! Chapter 20!!)

Chapter 20: Aiming for a big fang
(Volumes 1-3 on sale)
(The third "Young Bride" are the cheeky and young twins, Laila and Reiri.)
Page 04
Thank you so much. // Really, thank you.
Please take this as thanks.
Ah, thanks.
Take care.
Hello, Doctor, // You see, I...
What you think of him?
He looks pretty stately.
He's no good. He's here to see the Doctor.
got a pale face and looks weak.
I see.
But going by that, everyone here would be no good.
Yet, there are so many.
Page 05
Hey, // look, look.
Someone is waiting over there.
He's nice! // And handsome!
Look closely. // He's riding a donkey.
Ah, right.
When he bothers to come here on a donkey,
he's sure to be poor.
Even if a got the looks, // if we two can't get married off together, it's no good.
Yeah.
We need two healthy,
rich,
and handsome
brothers // with escorts!!
Page 06
Father, Father. // We want to marry these guys.
Talk to them!!
If you got time to spout nonsense, go help your mother!!
Page 07
Pft // What's with him.
It's not his place to look for our marriage partners.
Does he actually wants us to get married?
If we don't hurry we'll be old ladies.
We actually would be satisfied with anyone.
Yeah.
....
Hey, I have an idea, Laila.
What is it, Reiri?
In the end Father will have the final word, // but aren't we supposed to appeal ourselves?
Yeah.
But now? // We have no reason to go to the town and the festival is still far away.
....
Page 08
!!
We'll make someone owe us.
Like how we helped the Doctor.
!
I see. If the Doctor actually were the leader of some tribe....
Yeah!
Ah, thank you so much, you beautiful ladies.
You're my lifesaver.
To be truth, I have sons just around your age. // Please marry them....
Ah, of course for a low dowry.
That's it.
Page 09
What about him?
No, no. Looks poor.
Our future depends on this.
We have to do it seriously.
We're going for a big fang.
Fish?
Good.
Page 10
!!
There.
That's it.
Horse.
Check.
Clothes.
Check.
Don't miss, Laila.
Leave it to me, Reiri.
Page 11
----!!
...
Page 12
!!
Hey, what's going on.
He fainted.
Idiot. There's no point to it when he doesn't fall into the river.
I hit him all right.
Anyways, this isn't good.
He's still alive, right!?
Get him to our house....!!
Don't let go, Laila.
Wait.
He's falling.
Page 13
Well... // You see, I can't remember it well....
Though I think something came flying at me.
You were hit by a fish.
You were lucky that we were around by chance.
A fish?
Does a fish fly?
Flying fish exists! // I'm sure it was in the mood for a fly.
You're a Doctor, so look after him.
Hah...
Hey!!
Page 14
*bam* x2
Why---
Shut up // It's obvious you two had something to do with it!!
I told you to go help your mother. // Go already.
Geez
What's with him. // No need to get angry.
It's true that we saved him!!
Page 15
I wonder what we did wrong.
It would have all went well if he just fell into the river.
I know! // We do the opposite?
Opposite?
Us trying to save him was no good.
So we just have to let him save us.
If someone finds us collapsed on the street, we'll sure do so.
!
What's the matter, my fair Lady. Hang in there...
Aww, I'm sorry. // Could you escort me home?
Father will surely thank him
Thank you.
And obviously he will stay over a few days as a guest.
....
You have some really fantastic daughters.
And actually, I have sons at the same age...
Page 16
....
Sounds good.
Got it? I'll give you a signal.
Upon that you'll play the collapsed, Laila.
Got it, Reiri.
He
is
com-
ing.
Page 17
!
What's the matter, lady!
Are you okay!?
Can you hear me?
Where is your house?
Ah.....
What cattle... // do you have..
Cattle?
Just answer. // What cattle... do you have...
Page 18
Camels, sheep and a few goats.
How... // many....
In total around 300.
That's totally no good.
(You need at least a thousand)
Ah, hey, where are you going.
You shouldn't over-exercise yourself.
How was it!? // Did it go well?
No, he was a complete failure.
You are her friend? // Actually she isn't feeling well.
I'm alright!!
So you say, but if anything happens it's too late.
I said I'm okay.
Good timing. I was just on the way to a famous doctor myself. I'll bring you along.
Okay, get on.
Hey.
Page 19
Umm.... // Where does it hurt?
It doesn't hurt anywhere.
That's why I said I'm fine.
HEY
!!
Page 20
What's with him.
He doesn't have to hit so often.
Our heads will deform!!
It's his fault if our heads become pita breads
and we can't marry off anymore.
I wonder if it'll heal if we pull up our hair.
Won't we go bald?
Laila, // Reiri.
Page 21
Where were you loitering around!?
Help me out already!!
But--
No buts. // Grow up already.
Sis.
Sis.
At least look over your brothers.
But, Mother,
our marriage partners aren't decided yet, right?
At this rate will turn into lonely old ladies.
You don't have to worry about that!!
Your Father is properly thinking about it!!
Page 22
I wonder if he really is thinking about it.
Father isn't saying a single word about it after all.
At this age, it's normal to have such talks, isn't it?
Page 23
I can understand that he doesn't want to get separated from his cute daughters though.
He's too stinky.
What'll we do when our partners won't get decided?
Then I'll just join a caravan. // Then I can make lots of money.
Ah, sounds good. // Then I'll open a caravansary. // Then you can stay there whenever.
Great. // Let's earn a lot together.
Yeah, let's do that if it doesn't get decided
Page 24
Guess so.
It's not like I don't understand your impatience.
When I was your age, // I already gave birth to your father, I think.
See, Granny!!
There are more than enough partners for us!
It's just weird!!
I'm sure they're so many, because Father refuses them without us knowing...
Clam down.
Page 25
You're a tad too noisy. // Settle down a bit more if you want to be popular.
Settle down?
Like your response when a man talks to you.
(Hey, Miss, can I lend your well for me camel?)
Don't reply to him immediately.
Say nothing and just look him at him with cloudy eyes without being too rude.
And only then reply.
Go ahead.
There's no guy who won't fall for that.
(Who?)
Basically, only pushing isn't a way. // There are plenty of other ways.
Right, for example, // do you know how Sorya got her husband?
Hey, stop it.
How?
It's because he touched her head, right.
And had to take responsibility.
Page 26
Right, // but she set it up.
Stop. // don't ruin my reputation.
She loosed her headdress on purpose
and timing when he passed by: // Bam!!
Then she made a fuss about her hair being touched. // Her husband got all red.
But
I wasn't satisfied at all with the guy my father introduced.
I wanted him.
Unbelievable.
Scary.
Page 27
Don't think about copying her.
I can immediately tell what you're thinking.
Besides, it's unsightly for a woman to do all that.
Just leave it to your father!
Oh my, so you say, but even you
were right aggressive.
Hey, not in front of the kids.
Eh, what!? What!?
What did Mother do!?
Why not tell them. // They're at the right age to hear it.
Yeah, we're already adults.
So, what happened!?
.....Can' be helped.
...Okay, it was...
Page 28
It was during that unforgettable
great storm 20 years ago.
The boats were about to sink,
so the villager were pulling them ashore.
I helped out too, // but I was careless.
I forgot to tie the rope.
!!
Mother.
Kyaaa
She's getting washed away
She's getting washed away!
By luck, the boat got stuck
in some driftwood or sandbank,
Page 29
but I had no rudder and with the wind returning to blow,
I had my hands full just clinging onto the boat, so that I wouldn't drown.
At that time, your father came.
Are you okay?
I'm going over right now.
He rushed over and mocking wind and water // he pulled the whole boat to the coast.
He was just so manly and reliable,
I became head over hells for him.
Her father couldn't endure her attitude anymore and came to talk with us.
(Actually, I have a matter to discuss.)
Well, there was no reason to decline when there's love.
Page 30
That's not helping us at all.
(We can't wait until the next storm)
Don't you have something we can use immediately?
Be quiet!!
Don't spoil my sweet memories!!
... // Let's see.
Then let me think of a good luck charm for you two.
Good luck charm?
Page 31
Yes-- // A good luck charm, so you have happy marriage with a wonderful person.
Listen, first you need certain things.
Get all the things I tell you now.
First, catch 10 fishes at the river.
One basket of clams from the coast.
A sack full of shrimps.
The big ones.
Page 32
One basket of crabs.
One sack of abalones.
...Can we really make a good luck charm out of these things?
Granny said so.
All that's left
is
an egg from a sturgeon.
Got one?
Not yet.
Besides, don't they have eggs later?
Page 33
Geez. // We're only catching useless ones.
Again a male.
!
Look. // Doesn't this look like it has eggs!?
Ah--- // It's escaping.
Wait.
Hurry and
get the net.
Page 34
We brought them.
This is everything.
Hoohoo. Well done.
What now!?
What will do we with it!?
Calm down, // Get me a knife.
Okay, first cut out all the innards. // You get to work too.
I see. We're going to use the innards.
Fitting for a charm!
They're too young, so we can't eat them.
Be quiet and move your hands.
Page 35
Time to prepare for dinner....
Oh? // What are you doing?
Reminds me, if you tell others about it, it'll lose it's effect.
...
W- // We're helping out.
Yes, helping out.
Oh, how rare.
Fine, go fetch some water.
And cut all the vegetables.
Boil some water and pour the tea.
Spread the blanket and set the plates.
And call the others.
Dinner is ready!!
Page 36
Oh?
That's a quite luxury meal.
Some special day today?
How does it taste?
Delicious.
Yeah, if you put in shrimps and clams into the soup it becomes delicious.
...
What about the good luck charm!?
This is just a normal meal.
What's that about a charm?
....
Page 37
You tricked us?
There is no charm!?
I didn't trick you. // Hardworking girls get rewarded well.
C'mon, it's getting cold. // Hurry and eat.
...
It's good, Sis.
Of course it is!! // It was a pain to prepare!!
(So mean)
(If it's like that, I'll eat everything)
(Eat slowly)
Page 38
There are so many men in the world.
But why is it that we don't have a marriage partner yet?
You can say that again.
It's just strange.
...
Hey, Laila.
What is it, Reiri?
Can you tell what I'm thinking right now?
Somewhat. // I just thought the same.
Page 39
These two are nice!!
Yeah.
Okay, that settles it.
Like this?
Maybe loosen it a bit more?
Listen, when we bump them, make sure they touch your hair.
Then it's settled immediately.
I'll bump the right, // you the left one, Laila.
Okay.
Not yet...
A bit more...
Page 40
Hey, // Your headdress are loose.
!!
Nurl
and Salm.
We know that.
So what. // How annoying.
Fix it if you know it. // What are you doing?
Doesn't concern you. // Don't bother us.
Yeah, it got nothing to do with you.
Page 41
....
What?
Nothing...
Don't overdo it. // Your father will get angry again.
Shut up.
Geez! // Because of them, we missed our chance.
They're always interrupted at the good times.
Any other good pair?
Wait, I'll take a look.
!! // How about them!?
Looks good to me.
Then, they're the target!
They're coming over.
Hide, hide.
Page 42
Now.
Eih.
Muh
Page 43
....
You two!!
Kyaa // We're sorry.
Page 44
Geez.
They're always causing me trouble.
I wish they would act a bit more mature.
...
Hey,
If you don't mind, what about my two sons?
Two?
My two oldest.
(Oldest)
(2nd oldest)
Oh.
Oh?
I'm saying // how about your two daughters with my two oldest sons?
They know each other for long.
I don't think it would be all that bad.
Page 45
W--
Well, that's true, but...
Umm... Are you fine // with my daughters?
Actually, I hinted it a bit to them before.
What do you think of the twins?
They were certainly taken aback for a moment.
Uhm...
Well,
We won't be demanding. // We somewhat saw this coming already.
Hoo.
We have long each other for long. // I think it'll go well when we become relatives.
True again...
Page 46
...
Okay // well,
then that's that.
Yep.
By the way... // I have a request.
Spare me on the dowry.
Don't joke around.
We go way back. // You know my budget is lower than the low tide.
That are two completely different matters.
They're daughters even with like that. // A father of course wants to get the most out of them.
I'm offering here to look after your rowdy twins.
Page 47
What!? // So that was your goal from the beginning.
Know your place.
Even I wouldn't come to you if I had the choice. // Can't you understand the wish of a father let his sons marry even if you're poor!!
In the past when you were a lousy fisher, I shared with you. // Think of that and yield here.
W---
When you bring up that, // you also let the fishing tool I lend you, get washed away.
Nuh
And you broke my hand cart!
That was an accident.
Even you, damaged my new boat.
Page 48
What are you doing, Gramps?
Checking my health.
Good.
I feel great.
