Chapter 1 Behind the Shrine First part
Oriental Sacred Place
Author: ZUN Artist: Hirasaka Makoto
While napping with spring in its full glory...
Reimu: Ahh, Marisa.
Marisa: The cherry blossoms season is already over in the village.
Is the one here about to end soon, too?
I think there are still some left, but not enough to do hanami*.
T/N: Flower viewing
If you go into the mountains now, there should still be some nice cherry blossoms to see.
Marisa: Are you telling me to join the Tengu with their hanami?
I’m gonna die.
Reimu: I didn’t tell you to drink with them.
All right, next.
Marisa: Where are you going?
Reimu: I thought I’d go and see how the cherry blossoms are doing
At the back of my shrine.
Reimu: Now that they aren’t pretty enough for hanami anymore, no one will care about them.
The cherry blossoms will feel lonely, don’t you think?
Marisa: Ah, then I’ll go, too.
Reimu: As I thought, they’ve mostly fallen off the trees.
Reimu: There are more left than at the front, but the trees are mostly in leaves now.
Reimu: Well, this has its own charm—
All three: Eeeek?!
Reimu: Recently, I often see THOSE THINGS around my shrine.
Are you actually the one who took them here with you?
*They seem to like you.
Marisa: Maybe they moved to live near the shrine?
Reimu: They moved here?
Do fairies have a place they live permanently?
They always float around like larvae.
Marisa: Well, they do have their own place.
They mostly cleverly hide themselves in nature,
Like inside flowers or in the soil.
You know a lot about them.
Marisa: Yeah, I’ve seen them
Living in a large tree before.
Reimu: Living in a large tree...?
Marisa: No, not on top, but inside a tree.
Reimu: How can you read my mind?
Sunny: All we did was sleeping comfortably there...
Star: What a mean shrine maiden she is.
Luna: yeah, seriously...
Luna: Didn’t you promise not to show your visible form, Sunny?
Sunny: Even if you tell me that, when I sleep, I can’t use my power.
Luna: Don’t sleep, then.
Sunny: What the! I wasn’t the only one sleeping!
Luna: Shut up, you sleep-addict!
Star: Oh, my?
Star: It’s Reimu.
?: You’re right.
Sunny: What is she doing?
Luna: Maybe she’s looking for our house.
Did she find out that we moved to live behind her shrine?
Star: Well, I don’t think she can find us after all.
To normal humans, this looks like just an ordinary tree.
Reimu: Marisa said they live in a big tree,
But are they stuck here, like larvae?
Have you found the fairies’ nest?
Reimu: Nope, not yet.
Are they really living inside a tree?
Marisa: Probably. I’ve seen them before.
Reimu: Sigh... Oh, well.
If they come out, I’ll just chase them away, so it doesn’t matter where they’re living.
Marisa: Hmm? Yeah, you’re right.
Marisa: By the way,
Marisa: Wanna have a drink with this?
Let’s have a last hanami!
Reimu: Oh? Where did you get that wine?
Marisa: It was left on the altar in the shrine.
Reimu: Oh, so that was left there again.
Marisa: What do you mean?
Didn’t you leave this there?
Reimu: The next thing I know, I’d find wine left at the altar.
I wonder if it’s someone’s offering.
Marisa: Is it from someone with long legs?
I don’t think it’s the Mountain God, though.
Sunny: Did you hear that?
The next thing she knows, she’d find wine left at the altar
Luna: what does that mean?
Star: that means Gods love wine, too!
Sunny: That’s not it!
What that means is, we can take as much as we want!
Luna: Aren’t you concerned about who leave the wine there and why they do that?
Sunny: Why should I care?
Luna: Well, if we don’t know who leave the wine there,
We can’t tell what they put in it.
Sunny: What else can they put in it other than wine?
Luna: Well, yeah, but still.
*There’s more again
Sunny: Well, whatever it is, it’s fine.
Star: That’s right. There’s no mistake that she’s receiving offerings.
Luna: Well, yeah.
Sunny: Good! Now that we’ve decided on that, let’s go and have a look
Inside the shrine!
All: All right!
