見た目の風情だけでなく　所蔵していた人物の品格や歴史をも踏まえて価値を決めているのです
It's not just how their appearance strikes the eye; their worth is also decided based upon the dignity of their owner, and their history.

そして最も重きを置く器種がこの茶入
And the type of utensil on which the greatest weight is placed is this tea caddy.

俺は茶入の善し悪しがいまいちわからぬ
I don't know very much about the good and bad points of tea caddies.

またこの男にバカにされるぞ……!
I'm going to be made into a fool again by this guy...!

茶入の中でも最高とされるものをご存じか？
Do you know the item that is considered the greatest among the tea caddies?

信長様がお持ちの「九十九髪茄子」であろう……
Probably the "Tsukumonasu" in Nobunaga's possession...

「九十九髪茄子」も茄子形の茶入では最高のものです
"Tsukumonasu" is the greatest among the eggplant-shaped tea caddies.

しかしそれにもまして崇高なものが三つあるのですよ
But besides that, there are also three items that are supreme.

もし父親がいるとすれば
If I have a father,

宗易殿のような感じなのかのう
it seems it is you, Soueki-dono.

お世辞でもうれしうございます
I appreciate the flattery.

世辞ではない
It isn't flattery.

宗易殿には底知れぬ力を感じる
I feel limitless power in Soueki-dono,

主君信長様以上にだ
More than my lord, Nobunaga-sama.

羽柴様は武家の生まれでもなく腕一つで大将になられたお方
Hashiba-sama is a person who, without being born samurai, has become a general through his own skill.

そしてこの私もしがない魚問屋から腕一つで
信長様の三茶頭の一人になりました
And I also have risen from a humble fish wholesaler to become one of Nobunaga-sama's three tea men.

お互い似た者同士ということでございましょう
It's probably a matter of our similarities.

だがわからぬことが一つある
But there is one thing I don't understand.

宗易殿は何ゆえ黒を好むのか？
Soueki-dono, why do you like black?

黒という色は喪に服す色だ
Black is the color of mourning.

死を司る色だ
The color of death.

日常に用いる色ではない
It isn't a color for everyday use.

南蛮でも明でも朝鮮でも
Even among the southern barbarians, the Chinese, and the Koreans.

古今東西黒が最も格好良しなどとは　聞いたことがない
Nowhere is it ever said that black is attractive.

何ゆえ今焼をわざわざ黒く作るのだ？
Why did you deliberately make this firing black?

こんなものは下賤な者から高貴な者まで誰も欲しがらぬ
No one, from the lowest peasant to the highest noble, wants this kind of thing.

それが私の業にございます
That is my business.

万事何事も続けていれば無駄を見つけてうるさく感じるものです
It's a matter of continually finding the uselessness of everything, and feeling it to be annoying.

その無駄を省いて省いて省き込みますと
If I eliminate that uselessness,

最後はこの色のごときものになるのです
In the end, it becomes a color like this.

この黒こそが私の理想とする色であり
This very black is color that I consider ideal.

理想の生き方なのでございます
It is my ideal way of life.

世に言う「名物」はすべて渡来の品　その価値を破壊してでも……
The things the world calls "famous items" are all imported goods. Even if that value is destroyed...

私は黒こそが至高だと証明したく存じます
I look forward to proving that black itself is supreme.

そしてそれが止むに止まれぬ業なのです
Also, that is a compelling task.

そ　宗易殿は

新しき価値観を天下に押しつけると申すか!?
Soueki-dono is forcing new values on the world!?

信長様のもとではそれはかないませぬ

最も崇高なる三つの茶入
The three best tea caddies.

一つは信長様に渡った肩衝形の茶入「新田」
One is the Katatsuki-style tea caddy "Nitta" that was handed over to Nobunaga-sama.

二つ目はこれも信長様の手にある肩衝「初花」
The second, the Katatsuki "Hatsuhana", is also in Nobunaga-sama's possession.

そしてもう一つは
And the other one...

九州博多の豪商鳥井殿の持つ肩衝「楢柴」
Is the Katatsuki "Narashiba" that Shimai the merchant of Hakata on Kyushu owns.

どれ一つ取っても一国以上もの価値に相当します

もし三つ揃えたならば　それはもう天下を獲ったと言っても過言ではありますまい
If you gathered all three of these in one place, it would not be an exaggeration to say that you had captured the world.
