Sasha: What is it?

Usami: The President is always drawing something but

何してるんですか？
Usami: What is he doing?

はあ．．．部長さんはですね．．．
Sasha: Hmmm... the President is...

Sasha: Preserving manga.

マ．．．マンガ！？
Usami: Ma...Manga?!

あの．．．そんなモン伝統芸でも何でもないと思うんですけど
Usami: Well... I don't think there's anything really traditional about that.

かなりいいぐさですね。
Sasha: That's not your place to say.

だけど．．．
Sayo: But...

伝統芸で「マンガ」って何か変じゃないですか？マンガって最近のものでしょ？
Sayo: Isn't it strange to call manga a traditional art? It's a recent phenomenon right?

アナタたち．．．ひょっとしてこういう今風のマンガを想像してませんか？
Sasha: You guys are probably imagining this sort of mondern manga right?

ハイもちろんっ
Usami: Of course

実はマンガっていうものは昔から描かれていて歴史があります。
Sasha: Actually, what we call manga has a long history.

古くは「鳥獣戯画」と呼ばれていました。
Sasha: There was an old manga called Choujuu Giga.

ちょーじゅーぎが．．．？
Usami: Choju Giga...?

鳥獣戯画京都高山寺に伝わる四巻の白描絵巻で平安時代末から鎌倉時代初めにかけて製作されたと想定されている猿、兎、狐、蛙などを擬人化した絵巻
Sasha (No bubble): Passed down through the Kouzan Temple in Kyoto, Choujuu Giga consists of four

black and white picture scrolls which personified monkeys, rabbits, fox and frogs. They were

imagined and written from the end of the Heian Period until the beginning of the Kamakura Period.

その日本最古のマンガを千年くらい前に鳥羽僧正っていうお坊さんが描いたんです。
Sasha (still no bubble): Drawn by a monk named Toba Soujou about one thousand years ago, it is

Japan's oldest manga.

鳥羽部長のご先祖様だそうです。
Sasha: President Toba's ancestor

その「鳥獣戯画」ってどんなマンガだったんですか？
Sayo: So what kind of manga was Choujuu Giga?

Sahsha: Ummm...

Hajime: Is there more?

Sasha: More?

続きなんかありません。これで終わりです。
Sasha: No, there's no more. This is it.

えー！？
Collective: What?!

これで終わりですか？！
Sayo: That's it?!

昔のマンガはこれでOKだったんですか．．．？
Sayo: So in older manga just this was OK?

昔に生まれなくてよかったね。
Hajime: I'm glad I wasn't born back then.

まあ今とは風習も文化も違いますから
Sasha: Well, our culture and customs are different now

で．．．部長はこの鳥獣戯画を今に継承しようとしてるんです。
Sasha: So... our President is trying to revive the Choujuu Giga.

もちろんこのままじゃ今の人に受け入れてもらえないからアレンジしているらしいですが．．．
Sasha: Of course modern people wouldn't accept the work as it is so it has to be adapted...

あまりアレンジしすぎるとよさが消えるので難しいそうです。
Sasha: It seems like pretty hard work because if you change it around too much, it loses its

appeal.

へーちょっと見てみたいかも部長のマンガ
Sayo: Hmmm... I think I might like to see some of the President's manga

あ！見たい見たいっ
Hajime: OH! Me too, me too!

Toba: I think you saw this before but...

Sasha: He did a great job at modernizing it. Can't you see the difference?

じゃドコが違うのか教えてください。
Sayo: Then show us what's been changed!

Sasha: Look here, in the President's version the frog is wearing boots.

あ！そっか！！
Sayo: Ah, you're right!

言われて見ればそうだね。
Hajime: Now that you mention it...
