An Eye for an Eye
Caption: Why are you so upset?
2
Caption: Conan explains the trick of the locked room above the lake...
Officer: Inspector Yokomizo!
Officer: I questioned the ryokan front desk employees!
Yokomizo: And?
Officer: They said Natori-san left her keys there are about 5:30 this morning...
Yokomizo: Ho...
Officer: In addition, Teradou-san called the front desk at around 2am asking for someone to come to his room to fix his air conditioning...
Teradou: Well, I couldn't figure out how it worked...
Yokomizo: And what about Tanzawa's claim that he went to the front desk for change at around 4am?
Officer: That's also true! He broke a 1000 yen bill into 100 yen coins...
Yokomizo: Hey! Is it true that since we arrived not a single person returned to the main building via that bridge?
Officer: Yes...
3
Officer: The only ones to pass through were guests who went after being questioned by the police...
Yokomizo: I see...
Yokomizo: So if we assume that at the time of the crime...
--these 3 people were in the main building...
Yokomizo: then the brat's theory, that one of them was hiding all night in the Kojyou Roten bath ["open air bath above a lake"]...
--lying in wait to beat Tetsuyama-san to death, totally missed the mark?
Conan: But, that's because...
Agasa: YAWN!!
Mitsuhiko: Oh, professor!
Haibara: You're awake?
Agasa: Well...it would have been nice if you were going for a bath to wake me up too...
Mitsuhiko: But we didn't go for a bath!
Genta: Something terrible happened!
Officer: As far as we can tell, the culprit broke into the Roten bath from the lake and then returned back to the lake after murdering Mr. Tetsuyama...
Yokomizo: Yeah! The brat claimed to not hear anything like someone jumping into the lake...but we can't rely on that...
Yokomizo: Alright! I want you to gather information from the lake vicinity...
Agasa: That really won't be necessary...
4
Agasa: Since the murderer is here!
--Right in front of me!
Agasa: Hey, I don't know anything about the murderer!
Conan: It's ok, just move your lips to my voice...
Yokomizo: Yes? Aren't you the old man who came with the kids?
--Why are you so quick to stick your nose into this business?
Agasa: No, it's just that...
Conan: Even though there are traces of someone hiding out at the Roten bath all night...
--it appears to have been overlooked!
Yokomizo: Traces?
Agasa: In the dressing room, for some reason there was a plastic tea bottle filled with water...
--along with match cinders floating on the lake surface!
Conan: It's winter, and too cold to wait outside!
--But having said that, even if they entered the bath from the veranda, the bath hours were over and both the lights and heat in the dressing room were off. The cold from the winter's night would have been unbearable! So there was only one way to stay warm...
5
Yokomizo: You can't mean, they were in the bath!?
Agasa: Yes, that's correct! From the looks of things, after they finished the tea they refilled the bottle with water from the dressing room washbasin...
Agasa: They must have done that several times overnight...
--due to their throat becoming dry from being in the bath...
Yokomizo: Then the match cinders floating on the lake...
Agasa: Having a smoke to keep themselves awake! They smoked out on the veranda to keep the odor out of the bath...Now, the bath opens at 5am...and perhaps if he had slept poorly he wouldn't have been able to wake up...
Yokomizo: That means you're under suspicion because you're the one with cigarettes!
Teradou: Now listen, I...
Agasa: No, if he was the one who tossed the used matches on the lake..
there would probably be cigarette butts floating along with them...
Yokomizo: But old man, you just said...
Agasa: I just said they were having a smoke, not that they had cigarettes!
Yokomizo: Huh? No cigarettes?
Natori: A pipe...
Natori: Now wait a minute!
--If they were smoking a pipe while waiting...
Agasa: Yes, that's right...
6
Conan: The one waiting all night, hidden in the Kojyou Roten bath...
--Was the murder victim himself, Tetsuyama-san!!
Everyone: Eh!!!
Yokomizo: Then what of the Tetsuyama-san who passed through the entrance after 4:30am?
Agasa: That was the culprit! Masquerading as Tetsuyama-san!
Conan: In other words, in an unexpected twist, the murder victim put himself through hardships by hiding for an extended period in what would become a murder scene, awaiting his own murderer...
--Which means the trick was psychological!!
Yokomizo: Hey! Is that right?
--Didn't you see Tetsuyama-san pass through the entrance to the Roten bath?
Man: Well, no...But I did think it was really him!
Man: From his peculiar way of walking,
--his frown, and his imposing manner I was sure it was Tetsuyama-sensei...
7
Agasa: But at the time the floor was dimly lit...
--And, wasn't he wearing a knit capt, glasses, and a towel wrapped around him like a muffler?
Man: Yes...
Yokomizo: Indeed! As an actor and former actor who knew Tetsuyama well you two would have been able to play his part...
Teradou: Now, hold on!
Teradou: If that's how it is then you can suspect that actress, too!!
--If she wore a lot of clothes she'd be able to have about the right body shape. And if she wore a frown on her face she wouldn't have to say a thing!
Teradou: Besides, didn't that woman make an appointment with Tetsuyama-sensei over the phone? He said, "By arriving at the women's bath first thing in the morning we can be in there together until the other guests arrive!"
--Wouldn't that appointment be consistent with hiding out in the women's bath all night?
Conan: That's certainly true...
--assuming it really was her that Tetsuyama-san was on the phone with...
Yokomizo: "Really"? You mean she's lying?
Agasa: Yes...She had to say that to protect someone else! There are only 3 people staying at the ryokan with a connection to Tetsuyama-san...
Agasa: Teradou-san saw Tetsuyama-san speaking about the morning sun shining over the Kojyou Roten bath and if Natori-san were to completely deny it...
8
Agasa: That would have left only her manager,
--You, Tanzawa-san!!
Natori: What are you saying? That's I'm lying...
Agasa: That most likely, Tanzawa-san said something like this to Tetsuyama-san over the phone:
Agasa: "Natori-san will be headed to the Kojyou Roten bath first thing in the morning!
--If you want to see her nude, wait there in hiding overnight!"
Agasa: As her manager with knowledge of her schedule you could devise such a strategem!
--Over the phone, Tetsuyama-san said, "So I've finally convinced you, huh?" because...he had been begging to see her in the nude for a long time...
Agasa: Of course, Tetsuyama-san could also have hid in the women's bath first thing in the morning...
--but he explained that away by saying that if Natori-san were to know he had gone to the Roten bath ahead of her, she might be on her guard...
Agasa: And so Tanzawa-san convinced Tetsuyama-san to wait on the women's bath veranda, while he himself arrived pretending to be Tetsuyama-san...
--From there he lured him from the bath with clever words, like "That's disgusting!" and then proceeded to beat him to death with a blunt object...
Agasa: After stripping the body naked he moved it so that the head would lay on the rocks of the bathtub! Then he covered the body with bath water to make it appear he had been bathing...and had accidentally died slipping on a piece of soap!
9
Conan: After exiting from the veranda to the pathway, he hid behind the exterior machinery...
--hoping to take advantage of the disturbance caused by the female guests upon discovery of the body in order to contrive a way into the bath...in case some of his own hair had been left behind...
Conan: However, the children arrived earlier than he had planned...
--and rather than creating a disturbance, the bath was completely blocked off...
Conan: Before the other guests arrived, Mitsuhiko and ther others took the pathway to peer inside the bath, but because of the darkness walked right past him...When the other guests arrived he was able to easily blend into the crowd...but he didn't have the opportunity to enter inside...
Agasa: As a result it was necesary for Tanzawa-san to...
Natori: Wait up, old man! You talk like you were watching it all...
Teradou: Do you even have proof?
Conan: Yes...As for that...
Ayumi: What is that you're up to, Conan?
Conan: Ack!!
Mitsuhiko: Isn't that the voice changing bowtie?
Genta: Are you speaking in the Professor's voice?
--You can't use your own?
Haibara: That's not it! He's just whispering suggestions to the Professor since he doesn't know about the case...
Ayumi: Is that right?
Conan: Sneeky, Haibara...
Haibara: You're safe...
10
Haibara: Because nobody is allowed to peep on someone like you...
Conan: Peep...?
Conan: Yeah...if that's what you mean then you're safe, too! I only saw your butt!
Yokomizo: Butt?
--Is there something wrong with my butt?
Agasa: Uh, no....
Conan: Uh oh! I spoke with the Professor's voice...
Conan: I mean, BUT that's something that would have been impossible to know!! Something that only the culprit, Tanzawa-san, would have known in advance...
--Which is why Tanzawa-san cut in front of the others to enter the bath first!! That's the proof!!
Yokomizo: What? Isn't it natural to want to know what's going on when the kids are blocking the entrance?
Agasa: But to the women's bath? If somebody was, perhaps, screaming for help then you could force your way in, but normally you'd look at the situation and allow the women to go in first!
Conan: What Tanzawa-san knew...
--was that the only things present in the bath were Tetsuyama's body and the children...
11
Conan: Even if he couldn't avoid seeing the children...
--it wasn't a problem...
Ayumi: Wh-what's wrong, Ai-chan...
Mitsuhiko: It's like some sinister, ghostly thing appeared...
Genta: You're...s-scary...
Natori: That's your proof? Don't make me laugh!!
Agasa: Perhaps if I present you will more solid proof, you'll realize it as well.
--Tanzawa-san still has it in his possession...
Agasa: That ring with the "pea sized gemstone" you immediately mentioned to cover up for him.
--The silver ring Tatsuyama-sensei wore for special occasions!
Yokomizo: Cover up?
Agasa: Yes...A ring with a gemstone of that size would instantly be detected even if he were wearing it...
Agasa: Why, you don't suppose that darkened ring on Tanzawa-san's left middle finger is that ring, do you?
Agasa: When asked by the police officer to present his belongings, he disposed of it in his left rear pocket, but realizing it had slipped his mind...placed it on his left middle finger as he was fumbling around for it.
12
Agasa: So that others wouldn't notice it was Tetsuyama-san's ring...
--he adjusted it so that the gem was hidden in the palm side of his hand!
Yokomizo: But how did the ring get...
Conan: The silver darkened as a result of being sulfurized!
Conan: This onsen is a sulfur spring! When silver reacts with hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide it forms dark sulfurized silver on its surface. Seeing that Tetsuyama-san was wearing the dark, sulfurized ring he thought he needed to get it off!
Conan: He wanted it to appear that he'd just arrived at the bath, but others would suspect he'd been in the onsen for an extended period...
--Well, the truth is that in a high concentration sulfur spring it would darken almost immediately...
Yokomizo: But he was stupid to toss it aside and forget it!
Conan: He couldn't help it! He was pretending to be Tetsuyama-sensei...
Conan: Tetsuyama always held his pipe with his left hand, so he was probably left handed! Don't you think that's why he was always placing his empty left hand in his rear back pocket? The blood splattered bathrobe, the haori, the murder weapon, until they were all dumped into the lake, he would hold with that hand...
Conan: He even pushed the bottons on the vending machine with his left hand, and called me "boy" like Tetsuyama did...
--At the time you were still playing the part of Tetsuyama-sensei, right?
Tanzawa: It was troublesome, you know...
13
Tanzawa: Acting like such a small minded man...
--it wasn't a performance...
Teradou: Hey! So you really resented Tetsuyama-sensei for dropping you from the lead role in a film 5 years ago...
Tanzawa: Yes...Simply put, that was my motive...
Tanzawa: My part that was dropped was the role of the middle aged hitman in this latest film project, "The Scarlet Fountain Source."
--I thought that since I received rave reviews for my portrayal of the youthful hitman that I'd continue in the role...
Yokomizo: Could it be that it was premature for you to be playing that role?
Tanzawa: Yes...I thought so, too...
--Even Sensei told me that I was too young, with an overflowing aura and no air of pathos...and that I should garner more experience...
Tanzawa: As a result I quit acting...and even became her manager!
--In those acting days I experienced the hardships of the unsavory dregs of society...Yes...I even thought that was what Sensei wanted to teach me!
Tanzawa: So, when I heard "The Scarlet Fountain Source" was being remade, I phoned Sensei and told him I should play the lead role...
--But Sensei was too drunk to know it was me...
Tetsuyama: Tanzawa Jyunsaku playing the lead hitman?
--No...he won't do. He's too good...
--It'd be annoying if he received the same type of praise as he did for the youthful hitman, saying that he had "surpassed the original writer."
Teradou: Are, are you serious? That's...
Tanzawa: Yes...I was never going to be given the part of the middle years hitman under any circumstances...Unfortunately, until Sensei was gone from this world...
Tanzawa: Ever since I decided to become an actor after watching "The Scarlet Fountain Source" in black and white as a child I've wanted to portray that role more than life itself...
--But...now that I think about it, perhaps I really didn't quit playing the part...
Tanzawa: Immediately after killing Sensei, I could have become a hitman entirely...
--were it not for a mistake like this!
Tanzawa: Mishio! Stop playing the actress! This is just an important role to expand your repertoire...
Natori: It's impossible...Whether in film or in real life, the one who taught me to become those roles completely...was you...
Natori: And so in order to suppress my role of commissioner to a murder...I still haven't completely given up the role of the cold blooded proprietress...
15
Mishio: trying to kill a hitman without batting an eyelash...
Agasa: Alright! Make sure you haven't left anything behind!
Kids: OK!!
Conan: Hey, Professor! Wait up...
Agasa: Huh?
Conan: After going to the onsen just now to change clothes I have some sort of stinging pain in my butt...
--Could you examine it for me?
Agasa: Come to think of it, Ai-kun was headed to the men's bath a little while ago...
Conan: Huh? Why?
Agasa: Well...she said she was looking for something...
Agasa: Hm?
--You have a few swollen red patches...
Conan: S-seriously?
16
Haibara: Those are chili peppers...
Conan: Heh?
Haibara: It'll get better after washing it off with water...
Agasa: Ah, there's chili powder inside your pants...
Conan: Eh?
Haibara: Well, child nudity is nothing to be concerned with...
--After all, even if you can see it it's no problem, right?
Conan: You little...
