Caption: What's the key to the hidden trick in the brazier?
Sidetext: Conan and Heiji have determined the victim's nurse helper to be the culprit...
Abukawa: Now wait...
--just a minute!
Abukawa: I'm only the nurse...
--I just got back from shopping!!
Box: Abukawa Funae (39) Home Helper
--The door was taped shut using packing tape...
Abukawa: When I arrived you were pulling it off the window, right?
--It was stuck on tight...
Abukawa: In addition...
--The fact there's the charcoal brazier beside the body means that...
Abukawa: No matter how you look at it...
--he committed 'charcoal suicide'!!
Box: Kudou Shinichi (43) Victim
Heiji: It certainly appears so...
--The door and window were completely sealed from the inside...
Conan: And if the room was filled with carbon monoxide...
--nothing besides the body could be in here...
Abukawa: If so, then...
Heiji: It's strange, though...
Conan: Yeah, the old man...
--had a bad back...
Abukawa: But he could still apply tape even if his back were in pain.
Heiji: That's not what I mean! What bothers me is the shelf from which he took those books to make the foot stool...
Heiji: Do you think someone with a bad back would purposely choose books from a low shelf that would be almost impossible for him to reach?
Heiji: And on top of that just the thick and heavy ones?
--With one slip his back could give out and he'd become immobiled before he could kill himself...
Abukara: Well, I'm sure he didn't wish to use the books from the more convenient shelves for the stool. So he had no choice...
Conan: Furthermore, this charcoal isn't hot to the touch at all!
Abukara: You may not know this, little boy...
--but in the case of a 'charcoal suicide' the charcoal,
Conan: When ignited inside a sealed room, the ambient oxygen gets used up, combustion is incomplete and carbon monoxide is created...
Conan: When it is inhaled the carbon monoxide enters the bloodstream and combines with the hemoglobin, resulting in oxygen deprivation to the point of death...
--In other words...you want to say that once the oxygen is used up the charcoal flame gets extinguished, right?
Heiji: Well, if it fails there'll be very painful after-effects remaining so I can't understand the reasoning...
Heiji: We saw the old man sleeping in this room roughly 30 minutes ago...
--From there it'd take at least 10 minutes to tape up the window and door...
Heiji: Even more if he's hampered by back pain!
--And since it would take some awhile with just one brazier to fill the room with carbon monoxide there wouldn't be enough time left...even with the flame extinguished the charcoal would still be hot to the touch...
Conan: In other words, it means..
--the charcoal flames were extinguished a long time ago...
Heiji: And it means only unlit charcoal was placed there...
--and that someone remained in the room and was therefore able to tape up the window and door!
--You're saying I was in the room?
Abukara: Then wouldn't you have seen me?
--I wasn't there!
Heiji: Perhaps you were in hiding, keeping completely silent!
Heiji: In this space between the door and the bookcase!
Heiji: It really was cleverly thought out...
--Making us think it was a charcoal suicide because of the taped up window and door along with the brazier...and making it impossible to remove the tape quickly in order to ventilate the room...
Conan: While focused on the man lying on the floor and having to remove the brazier from the room, we weren't paying attention to the door...
--So you were able to use that opportunity to slip out!
Conan: The room temperature was raised to keep the corpse's temperature from falling...
--but since the jaw is beginning to stiffen, at least one hour has passed since the time of death...
Heiji: And there're signs of postmordem lividity on the back!
--That's proof you placed his body on the bed to make it appear he was sleeping!
Conan: Of course, if you want proof then aren't her fingerprints on the packing tape?
--Having to apply such sticky tape using gloves would haven take a long time...and it would be strange to be carrying gloves at this time...
Heiji: So you thought to try pretending to help us remove the tape to explain your fingerprints on the tape...
--But you couldn't do that, either...
Abukawa: W-what are you saying?
Abukawa: What in the world...
--are you two?
Heiji: Like I said when we rang the doorbell!
Abukawa: But it's not...
--It's not like he said!!
Heiji: He said?
Abukawa: He told me...
--"Today there's a child detective coming..."
Heiji: Oh? The old man said we were of no importance because we're kids?
Abukara: I mean....
Abukawa: T-the culprit!! He said that since I was up against a child to do as he said and that would take care of things!
Heiji: What the heck!?
Heiji: Hey lady, if you're trying to pull a fast one on us...
Abukawa: I'm not lying! When I arrived here today Kudou-san was already dead!
Conan: What do you mean?
Abukawa: As usual, I came in the afternoon...I rang the doorbell but nobody answered...
Abukawa: I had no choice but to use the spare key I was given, and when I entered I head the telephone ringing...
Abukawa: When I picked up the phone, the person...was whispering in a weird voice, as if it were machine altered...
Abukawa: He said he locked up Kudou in his bedroom dresser...
--and if I wanted to save him I had to release him quickly ...
Conan: Bedroom dresser?
Heiji: It's this one!
Abukawa: Only half believing it I came here to the bedroom and saw the dresser was indeed taped up...
--There was a rod placed through the handles so it couldn't be opened from the inside...
Abukawa: When I removed it and opened the doors...
--Kudou-san appeared to be asleep inside, but he was dead...
Heiji: The door's edges form a tight seal...
Conan: Yeah, he was likely murdered by being drugged and then locked inside along with a lit brazier.
Abukawa: So you understand I'm telling the truth?
--This is definitely the location of the crime!
Conan: But if what you say is true why didn't you call the police?
Heiji: Is it because if you messed up and were exposed you couldn't take it back?
Abukawa: I-it's because...
Abukawa: inside the dresser door he taped a photograph of my son!!
Abukawa: On the phone he told me if I didn't do as he said my son would meet the same fate...
Heiji:And you believed him?
Abukawa: Yes...He apparently knows I often quarreled with Kudou-san...
--He said it would be better for me it were made to look like a suicide...
Abukawa: Matters such as his meals...
--Kudou-san had many likes and dislikes...
--He also complained to me about his business colleagues...
Conan: Speaking of his meals, what did you intend to do?
--You said you were going out to buy dinner, but you didn't, right?
Abukawa: I usually come here after shopping at the supermarket...
--That's why he told me to place the supermarket bag in the refrigerator and pretend to go shopping after the boy detective arrived...
Conan: Then what were you planning on making?
Abukawa: Mackeral in soy sauce...
Heiji: Would you happen to know the supermarket's phone number?
Man: Yes...Abukawa-san the nurse?
--She was here today around noon...
Man: Yeah, they were sticking again today, so it was awful!
Man: The mackeral slices! There was a little juice accumulating inside the packs so she demanded I lower the price on them!
Heiji: OK, then...
--Thanks a lot!
Conan: I guess what she's saying...
Heiji: appears to be true...
Heiji: It would be strange for someone about to commit murder to bother haggling down the price of their fish...
Conan: With such conspicuous behavior, she would have been easily exposed due to the discrepancy between the time she was there and the time she said she was going shopping!
Heiji: So did he say who he was?
Abukawa: Well, he said...
Megure: Did the caller really refer to himself as that?
--After he whispered that the call got disconnected...
Takagi: Can you think of anything?
--Anyone who might carry a grudge against the victim?
Heiji: The Inubushi family's dog demon...
Heiji: The adopted children of the Inubushis, the victim's family, have been skittish lately...
--They feel an evil person has infiltrated the Inubushi family and intends to use the cursed demon dog to eradicate the Inubushi blood!
Takagi: D-demon dog!?
Megure: Hmph! Like from a mystery novel...
Takagi: Yes...Isn't there a Homes story like that?
Megure: Huh? Wasn't it from Kindaichi Kousuke's "Clan of Dog God household"?
Heiji: Did you hear anything from the victim?
--Like did he have an appointment to meet anyone...
Abukawa: I only heard that a boy detective from Osaka was coming...
Megure: The fact the criminal knew this must mean the crime was committed by an acquaintance...
Abukawa: Yes...perhaps he meant to go with the culprit somewhere...
Takagi: H-how would you know that?
Abukawa: When I found him in the dresser...
--He was wearing a suit and tie...
Conan: A suit...
Heiji: And tie?
Takagi: And so you removed them and placed that sweater on him?
Abukawa: Yes...that's what I was told to do...
Megure: Then you lay the body on the bed...
--and waited for the boy detective to come...
Megure: First you showed them the victim sleeping in his room and declared you were going shopping. Then you entered the room, moved the body to the floor, sealed the windows and door, and left the charcoal brazier...
Megure: Finally, you set the timer to make a huge racket...
--and hid yourself in the room's blind spot...
Megure: Later, Hattori and Conan are startled by the noise and enter the room. While they are distracted by the window and corpse...you use the opportunity to slip out from the blind spot and pretend to be coming back from shopping...
Megure: This is what you were instructed to do by the culprit?
Megure: However, even though you were haggling prices over at the supermarket, I want to caution you it's not proof of your innocence...
Takagi: Well, it won't really matter if we find the real criminal..
Takagi: By the way, was anything stolen?
--Nothing belonging to Kudou-san himself...
Abukawa: Oh, but...
--An ornament on his tie pin was taken...
Megure: His tie pin?
Takagi: Was it an expensive gem?
Abukawa: N-no...I just happened to notice there were signs of something having been removed which had been attached there.
Abukawa: And then there's the fact that...
--I've almost never seen Kudou-san in a suit...
Man: OK, we're putting him face-up on the stretcher!
Heiji: Something fell out his mouth!
Conan: It's small and round...
Conan: A pearl!!
Conan: Hey, about that tie pin!
--Examine it right away!!
Takagi: If there's any of the old man's saliva on it...
Heiji: It means he bit off this pearl from his tie pin just before he died...
Heiji: It may be a dying message!!
Sidetext: Next chapter: What's the significance of the pearl!!
