-> RTS Page for Shintetsu Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo 3
It's double the mayhem: as Bo-bobo and Don Patch take on a zombie master on the surface, Gaou and Beauty have gone underground where they face...a mole!? It's a chapter with so much going on...we need to tell both at once!
Shinsetsu 3: Top and Bottom
(TN: The title, "Ten to Chi to" can either be read as "heaven and earth" or "top and bottom"...the latter probably is more appropriate but the former is more poetic)

Bo-bobo: TO CONTINUE, YOU'LL WATCH THIS "CURSED VIDEO"!!
Yokohama Joe: It can't be!? This video is...
Bo-bobo: A VIDEO OF "NOROI", WHICH I MADE IN A SCHOOL ARTS FESTIVAL IN 3RD GRADE!
(TN: While "noroi" stands for "curse", in this case it has another meaning, for "slow" or "stupid". It is this version which also is connected to the "Name" of the robot Bo-bobo plays in this video)
Woman: Save me Noroi
Bo-bobo: Ah--Ah--
Yokohama Joe: WHAT IS THIS? ISN'T--THAT SADAKO!!
(TN: "Sadako" is in reference to "Sadako Yamamura", the antagonist both of the novel and the film versions (in Japan as well as remakes in the US and Korea) of the Koji Suzuki's work "Ring".)
SFX: ZUZUZU
Yokohama Joe: UWA! WHAT'S COMING OUT!? WOOPER LOOPERS!!?

Beauty: IS...THIS THE LAW OF THE NATURAL WORLD!? IT'S TOO CRUEL.
Beauty: YOU CAN DO THIS GAOU!!
Gaou: THE CHEERS OF MY BIG SIS IS THE POWER OF A HUNDRED!!!
Beauty: BIG SIS!?
(TN: Gaou makes mention of "Ane-sama", which can either be read for "big sister" or "maid". Though my previous usage (in the bizarre relationship of Hell Dolphin calling Yuuko "maid" with the same comment in the Hair Kingdom arc) had it as "maid", the familiarity of Beauty & Gaou here makes me translate it as "Big sis")

Yokohama Joe: GYAAAA, NOW THIS ISN'T A COURAGE TEST---IT'S A MASSACRE----!!!
Yokohama Joe: HAA...HAA...THEIR DANGEROUS...I CAN'T READ THEIR MOVEMENTS AT ALL...WHAT'S NEXT? WHAT WILL THEY DO?

Beauty: AMAZING!! HE SMASHED THEM WITH A PANEL!!

Bo-bobo: One plate~~~...two plates~~~...
Yokohama Joe: BANCHOU SARAYASHIKI!?
(TN: "Banchou Sarayashiki" is a notable Japanese folklore involving a beautiful servant girl who is thrown to her death by an amorous samurai who tries to trick her to love via losing one of her 10 delft plates. Her grudge caused her to become a yokai which torments people by yelling about her 9 plates and crying out over the missing 10th one)
Bo-bobo: NOT ENOUGH PLATES
Yokohama Joe: A PRO WRESTLER----!!?

Mole: What!?
Mole: MY CROCODILES HAVE BECOME SLUGGISH STAGEHANDS----!!!
(TN: This joke is probably harder to understand than the "haka/hacker" bit, but basically it's like so: "crocodile" in Katakana is "kurokodairu". But "sluggish stagehands" in Japanese is "kuroko darui", which is merely a slight letter switch of the "i" and "ru" at the end to make it "sluggish" and the usage of "kuroko", which is Japanese for "stagehand")

Gaou: GUHE
Beauty: GAOU-KUN!!
Beauty: ARE YOU OK!? HOLD ON
Gaou: Please...place my bones in the Australian wind...
Beauty: SEKACHUU!? YOU HAVE PRETENSIONS OF MASAMI NAGASAWA!?
(TN: "Sekachuu" is short for "Sekai no Chuushin de, Ai wo Sakebu", which translates into "Crying Out Loud, In the Center of the World", a light novel series published by Kyoichi Katayama since 2001 about two teen lovers who face tragedy when the female gets leukemia and dies before achieving her life dream to visit Ayer's Rock. The series is known as "Socrates in Love" in the United States. Further, Masami Nagasawa plays the tragic Aki Hirose in a 2004 film version of the tale, which makes sense due to her desire to go to Ayer's Rock...and Gaou)
62.
Don Patch: Well, I'm here in an underground limestone cave! The fight appears to be still going on.

TN: If you saw the first chapter cover page...you know "he'll" be important soon enough (like next chapter)...but I'll hold off complaints for the moment. For the time being, let me just say that this chapter is a really unique one in any manga that I've seen in that it allowed for two simultaneous stories...at the very same time! I actually did see this done once in a classic issue of TMNT (the B&W Eastman and Laird comics from the 80s, just to keep track), where Leonardo was fighting the Foot and a revived Shredder on the top while the bottom is a comic of the other turtles preparing for what they think was about to be a peaceful Christmas with friends and family. Sure it probably has been done many other times, but the way Sawai did it in this chapter was just rather imaginative, manipulating both stories and having them occasionally "use" the other in order to influence the actions in the first, sometimes literally! (Gaou lowering the bar of a panel at one point, Don Patch stealing a crocodile at another) Somehow I sort of wished they had a bit more "mirroring" than they did (maybe as an homage to a similar story structure done in a chapter of "Watchmen") but I say this was a rather successful and fun experiment even this early on in the Shinsetsu storyline! But with the introductions done, the story starts finally kicking into high gear next chapter with...him.
BTW: It has come to my attention that the spelling of "Gaou"'s name is actually "Gaoh"...you probably can translate it as you like, but I sort of stick with the Japanese reading until further notice.
Shinsetsu 3: Top and Bottom

And I didn't expect the "boy's" speech to be so weird...he's my favorite of the three news, by the way (and the rest of Japan agrees...see the popularity poll)
Thank you again ^_^
Oh, and nice trivia on the mentioning of how the "Panel system" works in other manga. I do know that most shonen are pretty similar in panel usage to American books, but I didn't know it was literal. (but hey, it does allow for something like this in a great satire where panel boundaries are broken several times)
