Sakigake!! Otoko Juku 13
Ocean Island Tour (1): Akaoni Island
-> RTS Page for Sakigake!! Otoko Juku 13
Summer vacation: a time to relax, hit the beach and to look at girls in bikinis...but when you're a newbie at Otokojuku, you have other summer priorities...like preparing yourself to survive your most hellish training yet!
Chp. 13: Ocean Island Tour (1): Akaoni Island
91.
Onihige: IT’S SUMMER!!
Onihige: Starting today, all first-years will head out to the sea for our traditional annual summer training!!
Hidemaro: Fufufu, at the sea.
Matsuo: We can.
Tazawa: Flirt with.
Togashi: Swimsuit girls--!!
(TN: The four of them sort of completed their own sentences here, but in a different order than how I translated it)
Onihige: Fufufu, you idiots…this is Otokojuku’s famous Ocean Island Tour. We’ll show you the hell in this world.
92.-93.
First-Years: THE SEA---!!
94.
Matsuo: I can’t hold out any more---!!
Hidemaro: Yes! They say that girls throw open their bodies and their hearts by the sea.
Tazawa: Yeah, even us who have no luck with girls have an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity--!!
Onihige: Are you idiots--!!
Onihige: Fufufu, did you really think we came to the sea for fun? Stupid…………!! The sea is for training and refining men.
95.
Onihige: Fufufu, Otokojuku’s famous Ocean Island Tour: three hundred kilometers from here are three small islands: Akaoni Island, Aooni Island and Kinoni Island. The Otokojuku huts on these three islands have three extreme demons known as “The Devils of the Three Seas” ready, waiting and anticipating your arrival.
(TN: Quite a bit going on here so I guess you have to pay close attention. First of all, the three islands are fully known as “Akaonijima”, “Aoonijima” and “Kinonijima”, but since “jima” is “island”, I made it a bit easier and kept it as is. Secondly, the names of the island are in reference to the various “oni” known and acknowledged in Japanese folklore, including the “Akaoni” (Red Oni) and “Aooni” (Blue Oni), ogre creatures of red and blue skin of legend…with a third added in as “Kinoni” (Gold Oni). Finally…there was a reference to a Japanese word “shigoki”, which at this time I merely used as referred to as “Shigoku” or “extreme”)
Student: Three-hundred kilometers from here---!!
Togashi: The…Devils of the Three Seas……!?
Onihige: Ri—ght, so now you’ll head towards Akaoni Island, the first island. Prepare the boats--!!
Student (Matsuo?): I’ve…got some bad premonition.
96.
(No dialogue, just a shot of Akaoni Island)
97.
Togashi: Is…that Akaoni Island…………
Tazawa: It’s…a somewhat terribly eerie shape.
Matsuo: When a local fisherman heard about this island while we were going there, his face turned blue and he ran.
Helmet: Wahahaha, that’s as far as we go---!!
Hikouboshi: From here on, you’re on your own---!!
Onihige: Kakkakaka, we’ll meet again if you’re alive.
Student: Damn, I’ll kill them someday.
98.
Student 1: This is a really remote island. There isn’t any indication that a person can live here.
Student 2: Now I can’t really talk about girls anymore.
Togashi: Chi, if there’s a demon or anything, come on out…………
Togashi: An…octopus---!! Harpoon, lend me that harpoon---!!
Togashi: Hehhehehe
Togashi: There---!! Wahhahaha, we’ll be eating as much Takosashi as we want for dinner.
(TN: “Takosashi” is a meal of sliced raw octopus)
Togashi: N? That’s strange……he’s a really strange octopus…
99.
Togashi: Uwawaaa----!!
Onidako: Fufufu, you’ve come. I’m one of the Devils of the Three Sea who controls this Akaoni Island: Priest Onidako.
(TN: Onidako is the name of a notable “Red Oni”, here made up with kanji translating into “Demon Octopus”)
100.
Onidako: Wahhahaha, you’ve been through a long journey!
Onidako: Tonight it’s best you take it easy to prepare for your fierce training tomorrow.
Onidako: Fufufu, I particularly plan it for the guy who had that exceptional eye.
101.
Onidako: Well, you’re all starving. Taste the fresh happiness of the sea as you wish.
Students: Ossu, thanks for the meal--!!
Matsuo: Wow, this fish is tasty.
Student: I haven’t eaten such tasty fish.
Tazawa: Priest Onidako, what exactly is this fish!?
Onidako: It’s this.
Tazawa: Fu…fugu………!?
(TN: Fugu is known as the infamous pufferfish that has to be cut in a particular way in order to be eaten or else leading to potential ingesting of a toxic poison)
Onidako: These contain in their liver a deadly toxin known as tetrodoxin. In Kansai, you’ve hit the “bullseye” by dying from eating that.
Tazawa: I’ve…heard that there is a strict state exam for cooking fugu…are you certified to do that……………!?
Onidako: Kakkakaka, I don’t need that. Whatever I fish up just gets chopped up there.
102.
Onidako: Hey—what’s wrong--!! Aren’t you going to take what I made with my heart? You’re going to eat this spiritedly, whether you want to or not---!!
(TN: Onidako actually makes mention here of “Hakkake”, which is an “inside cloth for cuffs and hems, but I really couldn’t find anything that ties it to his comment)
Matsuo: Ge!!
Students: O…Ossu, down the ha—tch!!
Onidako: Gahhahahaha----!!
Student: Th…this is………!!
Student 2: Hi Hii……
Matsuo: Ugugugugu…
Student 3: My…body’s so numb I can’t move………!!
103.
Onidako: Guwahhaha, the weather’s clear and the waves are high!! It’s a perfectly extreme day---!! Did all of you sleep well last night!!
Hidemaro: How…could he be so stupid?
Matsuo: We didn’t even take a nap.
Tazawa: He’ll understand seeing our faces.
Onidako: We—ll, first shall we start with some wholesome fun of watermelon-splitting?
Student: Watermelon-splitting…………Hmph—we’re saved. It seems to be surprisingly innocent. But where’s the watermelon?
Onidako: Will Togashi step forward?
Togashi: O…ossu, first-year Togashi stepping forward. (to himself) Somehow I have to do this.
104.
Togashi: But that’s………!!
Onidako: Fuffufufu, this is Akaoni Island’s famous “Human Watermelon-Splitting”. You only have one chance. However, even if you move a bit, you’ve been set up that I’ll know where you are by the ringing of the bell held in your mouth.
105.
Onidako: We—ll, where are you, watermelon----!?
Togashi: D…damn, why is it always just me?
Student: Mo…Momo…
Momotarou: Don’t worry. The bell won’t ring. This will go smoothly.
Student 2: Right. Despite who he is, Togashi truly has guts.
Onidako: Watermelon, watermelon.
Student: HI!!
Onidako: U—m, I don’t know.
Togashi: That loser has eyes to somewhere.
Togashi: This isn’t even a fart compared to the Oil Bath.
(TN: Yeah, a tad crude but it essentially means “this is nothing” when he says “this isn’t even a fart”)
Togashi: !?
106.
Togashi: !!
Hidemaro, Matsuo & Tazawa: A crab………!!
Togashi: Don’t come here………!! Don’t come here you crab.
Togashi: Right, go over there.
Togashi: !!
Crab: Don’t be “shellfish”, take this.
(TN: This is a weird pun: the crab actually thinks “Sou wa Ikani”, which is “I can’t do that” with the “kani” emphasized due to the “crab” bit. Thus I made the “don’t be shellfish” pun)
Togashi: GUGYA---!!
107.
Togashi: Da…damn---!!
Onidako: Guwahhaha, found you---!!
Everyone: To…Togashi---!!
Crab: I’m a sad crab………
(TN: Another pun: “kanishii” was used instead of “kanashii” or “sad”)
Onidako: Damn, so close.
108.
Onidako: Wahhahaha, so from here, you’re going to have one long swim around the island.
Student 1: That’s 50 kilometers………!!
Onidako: Wh—at, that’s not bad. It’s 50 kilometers circumference!! This will give you spirit---!!
Tazawa: Ossu, a question Priest Onidako!! All of us are wearing some bag around our necks, but what exactly is that!?
Onidako: Fuffufu, Don’t mind that, think of it as a charm.
Students: A charm………!?
Onidako: O—K, head out---!!
Student 1: That’s strange, there’s some scent of raw meat.
Student 2: Isn’t this the bento we’ll eat while we swim?
109.
Onidako: Gahhahaha, that’s how you do it---!!
Matsuo: It’s great that this sea is so huge after all
Tazawa: Yep, it’s like it’s making me feel better.
Hidemaro: That octo-priest is the greatest, even if it’s just for this.
Tazawa: N--? What is this? Blood is spilling out from the bag.
Hidemaro: There’s chicken meat inside.
Tazawa: Fuffufu, that octo-guy. It seems that octo-guy is luring sharks with the blood and making us shark food.
Matsuo & Hidemaro: Sharks~~!?
Tazawa: Wahhahaha, don’t worry. There aren’t any man-eating sharks in these waters.
110.
Tazawa: They do say that these are waters where sharks usually live.
Matsuo: Ta…Tazawa---!!
Matsuo: Uwaaa---!!
Students: Hi…Hie—A…shark---!!
111.
Students: Sa…Save us--!!
Momotarou: That shark is quite strange.
Onidako: Gahhahaha---!!
Onidako: It’s stupid, but there are sharks around here as the glasses said. This remote-controlled robot used in the movie “Jaws” was sold to me from Spielberg.
Onidako: Fufufu, now I’ll put it on autopilot.
112.
Onidako: Watch, this is a man of the sea---!!
Onidako: A man of the sea doesn’t have a word for running. He stands up to any enemy.
Onidako: Fufufu, this is what happens every year I do it. I’m certain they’ll respect me.
Onidako: Sorya---!!
Onidako: How’s that? All of you have surprised voices for my courage…………
113.
Momotarou: Fufufu, you are a man of the sea as we expected. You weren’t really careless regarding the man-eating shark.
Onidako: !!
Onidako: So…then, that’s a real……
Togashi: Wahhahaha, look at his plight---!!
Matsuo: He’s come up to have have kamaboko for dinner---!!
(TN: “Kamaboko” is a fishcake made of surimi, notable for it’s white and pink appearance)
Onidako: Aah--!!
Student 1: Bu…but we can’t be happy here…………
Student 2: Those are many of his terrible shark friends.
Student 3: Wh…what will happen to us?
Caption: THUS, THEY LIVED THROUGH THE FIRST DAY OF OTOKOJUKU TRAINING
TN: So that's what happened to Bruce! Yeah, probably lost but basically...Bruce is the name of the mechanical shark Spielberg used for "Jaws"...it broke down a lot basically turning what could have been a strange B-movie into the memorable blockbuster we know and love. So to hear that Onidako ended up buying Bruce and using it for his own purposes...well, somehow I think we should be thankful Momotarou broke it down cause I highly doubt Miyashita would have. This chapter was really a memorable intro into the summer vacation section of the story, with everything from the torment to the teachers to the whole fugu sequence to Togashi standing up to another nightmarish situation...and of course, Bruce. But another thing I keep repeating though it's true: Miyashita draws cute girls. He doesn't do them often (particularly once the story really gets manly) but he does make them cute.
