Togashi's guts (and bizarre luck) has secured another tie in the Kyoura Daiyon Kyousatsu, but with Momotarou becoming more and more spooked by the trials he's going through, is Toramaru the only one who can help him get out of them?

Chp. 34: The 3rd Evil: Hyoubonenmon-Kan

138.
Date: Fufufu, even a kamikaze doesn’t blow again.
Rinkai: Now let’s go. Up ahead holds the 3rd and 4th Evils in the “Kyoura Daiyon Kyousatsu”.

139.
Momotarou: …………………!
Momotarou: TOGASHI…!!

140.
Shura Oshou: Fuohhoho, the Lifespan Candles for Togashi Genji of Otokojuku and Hien of Gougakuren have gone out simultaneously. The 2nd Evil of the “Kyoura Daiyon Kyousatsu” was again another tie.
Shura Oshou: He appeared to be a good friend.

141.
Shura Oshou: The value of a human: you don’t know when you’re alive, whether it’s how much fame you gain or how rich you become. You’ll know from how many friends cry for you when you die.
Tazawa: Shut up, you f**king oldie!! You’re fatly staying out of this like a priest!! Does someone like you understand our feelings---!!
Shura Oshou: Gegege, u…um, I am a priest for the time being. What are you doing to me………!!
Matsuo: Togashi---!!
Matsuo: Can we really believe that you’ve died---!! Answer us, Togashi---!!

142.
Toramaru: Hey, Momo, why didn’t you carve Togashi’s name on your arm for the Living Blood-Oath Vow together with J?
Momotarou: Togashi isn’t dead. I won’t believe it until I see his corpse in front of me.
Toramaru: ……………………

143.
Fuukai: Stop--!!
Momotarou & Toramaru: !?
Toramaru: A—h!!
Rinkai: This is Fukankyou, a suspension bridge to the 3rd Evil of the “Kyoura Daiyon Kyousatsu”. Now cross.
(TN: “Fukankyou” = “Bridge of No Return”)

144.
Rinkai: First is Otokojuku………!!
Toramaru: Heh, great. Now whatever happens won’t be talk. The path is level, enough for me to do this alone. Momo, you follow behind me.
Toramaru: Let’s go.
Momotarou: Be careful, Toramaru.
Toramaru: We~~ll, there.

145.
Toramaru: We’re really high up. However, I wouldn’t be able to even fart if I were Togashi with this.
Toramaru: Uo!!
Momotarou: Toramaru--!!
Toramaru: Step back, Momo--!!

146.
Toramaru: UOO---!!
Momotarou: Toramaru……!!

147.
Toramaru: Hehhehe, I’ve been propping a suspended ceiling in Otokojuku’s Gokukaibou for a half-year. This thing is nothing……………
Toramaru: Horyaa!!
Toramaru: Hehhehe, how’s that? They’re voices are surprised too…………
Toramaru: Huh!!

148.
Toramaru: Wh…what--!!
Toramaru: Uo!!
Gekkou: Fufufu, I see the shadow of death in you.
Momotarou: Toramaru……!!
Toramaru: Wh…what’s with this baldy suddenly!!

149.
Rinkai: Quiet!! This is Ryuuryoudou, the entrance to the 3rd Evil. Both Otokojuku and Gougakuren, move into each of these holes.
(TN: “Ryuuryoudou” = “Cave of Clear and Resounding”, with “Ryuuryou” in reference to a sound that is “clear and resounding” or with “resonance”)
Toramaru: ………………
Momotarou: What is this cave…………!?
Toramaru: How cold, it’s as if we’ve entered a refrigerator.
Toramaru: Oh, it seems like the exit over there.

150.-151.
Fuukai: THIS IS THE 3RD EVIL OF THE “KYOURA DAIYON KYOUSATSU: HYOUBONENMON-KAN!!
(TN: “Hyoubonenmon-kan” = “Barrier of the Icy Basin and Blazing Worry”)
Momotarou & Toramaru: !!
Toramaru: What is this……!?

152.
Fuukai: As you can see, in the center of this ice cave is “Banryuuhyou”, namely, an ice ring. And lying in wait below are Kitsuritsu Icicles, which are sharper than knives!
(TN: Quite a bit going on here so I’ll explain before we get to our entry: first of all, I kept “Banryuuhyou” in Japanese due to it already being translated as the “ice ring”. Second, “Banryuuhyou” = “High Ice Board”. Finally, the “Kitsuritsu” in “Kitsuritsu Icicles” = “Standing Towering Mountains”, which would have been too cumbersome to write down right here)
Commentary:
Banryuuhyou………a mushroom-shaped ice projection created by a sudden temperature change in an ice cave. The biggest ones have a diameter of 20 meters. Many have been seen in ice caves near Mt. Shiranui in Hokkaido.
-From “The Science of Ice”, Minmei Publishing

153.
Fuukai: And with the ceiling heat blazing, this ice ring will in time become smaller and the massive icicles overhead will drop. This is the 3rd Evil of the “Kyoura Daiyon Kyousatsu”: Hyoubonenmon-kan!! Now will one player from each team come forward!!
Date: Fufufu, that’s extremely cautious.
Toramaru: Really, who are you thinking for this?
Momotarou: I’ll go here, Toramaru.
Momotarou: I’m already at my limit. Further, I see that I’m being deceived by my allies in front of my eyes. I’ll ask for you later.
Toramaru: ……………………
Toramaru: Hold on, Momo.

154.
Momotarou: Uh!!
Momotarou: To…Toramaru………!!
Toramaru: Fufufu, don’t think badly of me. Enzui Hachoushou: you won’t regain consciousness for a bit.
(TN: “Enzui Hachoushou” = “Back-Head Tearing Stretch Palm”)
Toramaru: I’ll go ahead. You have a duty as the head of the Otokojuku First-Years. Watch with your eyes that we fight to the end, so we can win this “Kyoura Daiyon Kyousatsu”.

155.
Gekkou: Gougakuren: Gekkou of the Sanmenken!!
Toramaru: Toramaru of Otokojuku---!! Hehhehe, it’s finally my turn.
Date: Fuffufu, Gekkou, the strongest man of the Sanmenken………he’s on his appropriate stage.
Rinkai: NOW START!!

TN: I know you probably aren't going to wonder or complain about these things, but I've noticed how many of these "pure Japanese" words and locations and phenomenons there are in this series that I literally have to let be in order to make sense in this world. I knew I was going to essentially not touch and give a base translation for things like attacks (such as the one Toramaru does towards Momo at the end), but this chapter not only had the attack but a cave, a couple phenomenons (including one Minmei-explained one), not to mention the actual name of the 3rd Evil! I really need to find consistency regarding the usage of these words and names and such, particularly what and when to translate them. (I know not to translate the attacks except the initial explanation but that's about it)

As for the chapter...it definitely shows that Momo, even as leader of the first-years, gets exhausted and worn out due to the trials and that even he has desperation in wanting to get his fight over with just so he can stop being haunted. Watching wear and tear like such, particularly psychological moments, really isn't as well seen in shonen like such and it shows that even heroes who play it cool can go crazy due to the physical and mental strain of the Kyoura Daiyon Kyousatsu. But the chapter was mostly a show to finally start demonstrating the power of Toramaru (and a bit of his next opponent: Gekkou of the Sanmenkan), as well as the loyalty that the other first-years, even ones who were locked away for a half-year, have towards helping their leader and making sure they do the right thing. I know it probably is just the "rule of shonen logic" talking, but Toramaru forcing Momo out, making him face Date as opposed to Gekkou, probably makes sense in that it's more now about either allowing for the friends sacrifice to draw strength or just an acknowledgment of his power and leadership being the only one that can take Date down. But of course...he himself has his work cut out for him, as we'll see next time!
