Though Momotarou has made some leeway in his fight, the advantage in skill and ability remains with the nearly unstoppable Date. But the question remains: why would such a powerful Otokojuku student...abandon his alma mater?

Chp. 40: The Otokojuku 2 – 15 Incident

Date: HAKYOKU-RYUU HIGI: JATETSUSOU!! As the name says, it’s flexible and persistently chases its prey like a snake!!
(TN: Didn’t mention it in the last chapter since it wasn’t used, but “Higi” is “Secret Technique”, thus “Hakyoku-ryuu Higi: Jatetsusou” is “Secret Technique of Hakyoku-ryuu: Snake-Track Spear”. BTW: The reading here seems a bit more like it could actually be “Jatessou” instead of “Jatetsusou” due to the usage of the “tsu” making it look smaller, but until proven otherwise, I will make it “Jatetsusou”)

Date: Wahhahaha, once it finds one like it has now, Jatetsusou won’t let its prey get away---!!
Momotarou: I’ll get killed at this rate. Whatever I do, I have to stop the movement of the tip without getting within it’s length……!!

Rinkai: Do you see it, Rinkai? This Choukyokudaisoukafun-kan, the final evil of the “Kyoura Daiyon Kyousatsu”, has come to an end.
Fuukai: That Date has mastered that Jatetsusou, the legendary spear technique, to the point that they’re like his limbs. He isn’t ordinary.
Rinkai: Anyway, with the way he’s been sealed off, it would be unbelievable for that Momotarou to win this.
Fuukai: And even so, that strange wounds on his face…that’s “Rokubou Menkon”. Where exactly did he get that…………!!
(TN: “Rokubou Menkon” = “Six Forgets Face Mark”)
Commentary:
Rokubou Menkou…one of the punishments inflicted on criminals who had committed a serious crime during the latter part of the Han Dynasty in the 2nd century. Six stripe wounds are cut on the face on both the left and right as proof called the “rebellious group” for forgetting the six virtues: piety, loyalty, trust, honor, virtue and gratitude. Even today, the insubordinates known as “bourokumono” gain their meaning from this.

Tazawa: O…ossu, I have a question principal!! Before we begin the Great Chime yell, I certainly want you to hear it.
Tazawa: We’re leaving out that Date, the president of the Kantou Gougakuren who is fighting Momo now at the top of Mt. Fuji. Was he a student originally recorded at Otokojuku…………A…and, wh…why did he succeed from Otokojuku!?

Edajima: About the abominable 2-15 Incident…………!!
(TN: The “2-15 Incident” is particular to Otokojuku, but the name of the incident you’re about to hear is in reference to the “2-26 Incident”, an incident which occurred from February 26th, 1936 where the Koudou-ha faction, a group of ultra right-wing nationalists, took over the center of Tokyo and killed several politicians as a means to try and overthrow or instigate the Japanese government, including the prime minister and the Emperor Hirohito. Though little know why it was done, it was part of a wave of paranoia and action that preluded Japan's instigation of the Asian front for World War II in 1937)
Tazawa: The…Otokojuku 2-15 Incident………..!?
Edajima: It was a winter 3 years ago…during a military arts drill class.

Edajima: That instructor was newly appointed teacher Kekkisakan, who was just appointed to teach martial arts at Otokojuku.
(TN: Considering that all the teacher names have puns, “Kekkisakan” is “Vigorous Prosperity”)

Student 1: Damn, he’s got to be kidding.
Student 2: We can’t lift a hand to a teacher, but while I know that, I want to chew into the bluff of the new guy.
Kekkisakan: Fufufu, do you understand, I have to put you all down. If a new teacher was stupid, he can’t be taken seriously.
Kekkisakan: So then, how’s this? With this thing, you’ll be boiling to do anything.
Students: A…real sword………!!

Kekkisakan: Now, won’t you? Which of you will fight me with a real sword---!! Uwahhaha, what’s wrong? Is Otokojuku a collective of cowards---!!
Voice: Teacher.
Kekkisakan: Hoo……will this leader state your name?
(TN: Kekkisakan actually makes a comment here of “Kanseimei”, which actually can be read as “Name of Director”. Considering he is the “leader” stepping forwards, I ended up translating it as I did)
Date: Head of the Otokojuku First-Years, Date Omito.
Tazawa: Wh…what…!? Date was the head of first-years just like Momo……………!!
Matsuo: ……………………!!
Edajima: Fufufu, he was perfect at everything he did…there hasn’t been such a greater talent in Otokojuku’s 300 years.

Kekkisakan: Fufufu, I’ve got a nice thing for you. I call this the “Rokubou Menkon”. An expert such as you is exactly just a saucy guy who doesn’t think about their master.

Edajima: He has learned every single martial arts, not just spearmanship.
Edajima: And now he’s turned his blade towards Otokojuku so he could master the “Kyoura Daiyon Kyousatsu”…
Edajima: Fufufu, you’re a terrifying man, Date Omito…………!! It’s ten to one he’ll win against Momo…………!!

Momotarou: Uh!!

TN: This chapter was truly a tour-de-force for Date, considering how he's laying it all on the line with everything from his spearmanship to even using his helmet to brutally attack Momo! Date continues to show more and more the danger and power he possesses, even confirmed by Edajima himself about his studies of every form of martial art. But the highlight of the chapter was the 2-15 incident (weird that both numbers are one less than "26"), an incident which Date himself didn't instigate but merely ended up falling through due to the bullying nature of the martial arts teacher. What Date did was wrong, but at the same time he wanted to prove his strength both by taking the Rokubou Menkon on his face (which made no sense at the time since all he did was stand up to him after he kept egging them on) to killing him with the spear attack both as a means of proof and to stand up to this bully. This incident was illegal but further shows the tragic side to Date: sure he's strong, but at the same time he still has his morals of right and wrong and what he respects. (which may further be explained later on down the line...) The whole thing does show more to him than the brutal power-demonstrating monster that Momo is having such a hard time with.
