Burn, Mach Punch
-> RTS Page for Sakigake!! Otoko Juku 47
In the second room of the Chinju Corridor to the Third-Years dorm, J has found himself locked up in cement by the sadistic Henshouki with only two ways out: put out a candle with his Mach Punch...or wait for acid to melt him away!
Vol. 6: The Legendary Paaron Long Castle
Chp. 47: Burn, Mach Punch
8.
Henshouki: Fufufu, that sort of fist won’t put out the candle’s fire. Cut through the air with your fist moving your spirit…that simple thing won’t do.
Toramaru: This is bad. J’s Mach Punch can’t be used---!!
9.
Henshouki: I’ll sample it for you once more: the physically taught fist of Nanchou Temple, Tenbin Shouha!
Henshouki: HAA---!!
10.
J: UGU!!
Toramaru: J---!!
Henshouki: I can’t end your lives by killing you as said to us by the head of the third-years, but I won’t end your life by killing you. If you die this way, it won’t have meaning to the head, even if he holds audience with you.
Henshouki: Fufufu, well, anything wrong with that? By merely having you planted there, I can wait for the rope to burn away and the sulfuric acid overhead to bathe your entire body.
11.
Henshouki: AIYA--!!
J: !!
Henshouki: Tee--!!
12.
J: Gufu!!
Henshouki: Wahhahaha, will you suffer in agony while you die when you’re whole body is bathing in sulfuric acid? Or will you’ll die getting chopped up by Tenbin Shouha as is!! Which road is your destiny?
Toramaru: You’re kidding: how could he say that guy hardened J’s feet in concrete so he can’t move? I can’t take this anymore: I’m destroying this iron grill and saving J!!
Momotarou: Hold on, Toramaru.
Toramaru: Huh……!!
Momotarou: Fufufu, it’s best that you don’t have such absurd behavior. J strikes forth against such opposition. Look closely at J’s expression……
Toramaru: Wh…what---!?
13.
Toramaru: Wh…what, he’s smiling?
Togashi: That always happens: his mouth takes the “he” form and you can see his teeth. That’s not an offended J………………
(TN: When Togashi mentioned that “his mouth takes the “he” form, he speaks of the hiragana formation which looks like a rising, falling hill)
Henshouki: Fufu…what’s so funny? Are you deranged with the terror of your impending death?
J: I’ll do it.
J: It’ll cut much more. The blood is rushing to my head. When my anger reaches it’s peak, my fist will tear through air and open air holes in your body.
14.
Henshouki: Fufufu, you speak something interesting.
Henshouki: Your fist can tear through air when your anger reaches its peak…
Henshouki: Fufufu, I’ve heard of that. Fist of Fury………before going into a pro boxing ring in America, the trainers tie their participant to a chair and pour on an assault of punches and kicks and vilifying abuse, making them violently angry. The anger boosts their emotional strength to an extreme, drawing out the maximum ability within their body…
15.
Henshouki: However, is there something wrong?
Henshouki: Do you think you can win against me with that much anger? Then burn with as much anger as you want!!
Toramaru & Togashi: J---!!
16.
Henshouki: Hm—m, you’re unsatisfied with that level. So then, you can take that.
Henshouki: Do you know of Shasaisetsu…………
(TN: “Shasaisetsu” = “Apology-Breaking Knuckles”)
Toramaru: Shasaisetsu……!?
Commentary:
Shasaisetsu: In China’s Song Dynasty (12th Century), as proof of victory in a duel for boxing warriors, the winner breaks all of the losers fingers from the first (it’s said that they leave just the thumb and index finger of the right hand so they can eat), sealing them so they can’t use their fists for the rest of their lives. Though the pain of the flesh goes away, the emotional humiliation is beyond description.

J: !!
Henshouki: You can’t put out that flame. You’ve lost this fist match.
J: ………………!!
J: Gu!!
J: Uuh!!
18.
Toramaru: Mo…Momo, are you still in denial watching this---!! Momo, how could you keep cool with this!!
Momotarou: Fufufu, you still don’t understand Toramaru…………J possesses a lot of pride in his own Mach Punch………………
Momotarou: Even if he lost once, he doesn’t have a reason to lose when he’s challenged to a fist match, while unforgiving his pride for not putting out the candle’s flame. Therefore, even if he’s taken that far, he’s storing up his anger to release at the end of the match.
Momotarou: Even if he sacrifices his body, his pride is alive. That’s the kind of man he is.
J: Nugugu………!!
Henshouki: What’s wrong: you can’t even speak with that much pain? Even so, hasn’t your anger reached its peak yet?
19.
Henshouki: Fufufu, even if I did more, there’s no time……I’ll be going, since I’m not going to join you in bathing in the sulfuric acid shower.
J: Wait, the match isn’t over yet.
J: My Mach Punch should certainly put out that flame. It won’t just finish you off.
20.
Toramaru & Togashi: J--!!
J: Charging complete……!!
21.
Henshouki: Fufufu, so your anger has finally reached its peak. However, how do you intend to fight like that with your legs hardened in concrete? And the acid overhead will soon fall on you.
J: Don’t mock me………I can escape from this at any time.
Henshouki: Mu!!
22.
Toramaru: Th…that guy……!!
23.
J: Let’s go. I’ll blow it out together with the flame of your life.
Henshouki: Fufufu, what are you joking about……………!!
Henshouki: TENBIN SHOUHA!!
J: THIS IS MY ANGRY MACH PUNCH----!!
24.-25.
Henshouki: Huh……!!
Henshouki: So…stupid. My spirit is being forced back by his spirit…………!!
Henshouki: GEE!!
J: YOU’RE NOT MY MATCH. (Get out of my face!)
(TN: The translation of the kanji for J’s trademark line is different from what he says, thus the subtitle…but I had to keep J’s line regardless)
TN: Yeah, I know I should correct Engrish of any form...but the way J said that line is so funny that I just can't make myself do it. Sure I can subtitle it with the Japanese version, but I have to keep "You're Not My Match" just as much as I have to keep...well..."I am the Principal of Otokojuku, Edajima Heihachi!" It's just that important! Engrish aside, this chapter proves that J seems to thrive when he is pushed to the limit, whether by his growing anger unleashed on Henshouki or putting up with the guardian's sadistic torture such as attempting to break his fingers just so he can release that Mach Punch. If Henshouki wanted to win, he just shouldn't have pushed J to that limit where he would release a really angry Mach Punch...but I guess that's just who he is and how he acts! Oh, and as for the challenge...I wonder what was what ultimately put out the candle: J's Angry Mach Punch itself...or the Angry Mach Punch pushing back Henshouki so fast that the breeze of his movement put out the candle!? Either way, at least that's another room to the Third-Years down!
