Big Brother’s School Cap
-> RTS Page for Sakigake!! Otoko Juku 48
Will Henshouki take defeat well after losing his challenge to J? What shocking secret is Togashi keeping from Momo and the others about why he must face Third-Year head Jaki alone!? And...is it finally Toramaru's turn to fight!?!?
Chp. 48: Big Brother’s School Cap
26.
Henshouki: ……………………!!
Henshouki: Fufufu, you’re persistant…………That can’t be the extent of your punch……………
J: You don’t understand yet with one blow. Stand, I’ll teach you so you’ll understand much more.
Henshouki: I’ll kill you!!
“Speaker”: Hold on, Henshouki, that’s enough!!
27.
“Speaker”: Fuffufu, you’ve become heated with your 1st opponent. You’ve lost here, Henshouki.
Henshouki: !!
“Speaker”: Now go, 1st-year. You’ve finally reached the final room of the Chinju Corridor.
Toramaru: That…voice is…………!!
Togashi: It’s…him!!
Henshouki: I…I understand, head…
Henshouki: Fuffu, proceed. I have to due to the head’s words. But don’t forget: next we meet will be the day you died.
J: Aah, I’ll remember.
(TN: The line basically is a bit weird but basically Henshouki makes mention here of “meinichi”, which isn’t “the day you die” but “the anniversary of your death”. I tried to make it work by making it “the day you died”, but I’m not sure)
Togashi: Head of Otokojuku Third-Years, Daigouin Jaki……………!! I…will take your life………
28.
Jaki: Fuffufu, this year’s 1sts are really doing this.
“Mohawk”: Pardon me, head!!
“Mohawk”: Here………!!
29.
“Mohawk”: Within the four is the man known as Togashi Genji…………we’re worried that there is an alarming tenacity and hatred within his eyes and investigated it immediately.
“Mohawk”: Look over these results………
“Mohawk”: His intention is revenge against you.
Jaki: Understood. I remember his school cap…………
Jaki: Fuffufu, interesting. I’ve reigned as ruler of Otokojuku for over 10 years…And that fool is aiming for the life of Daigouin Jaki, head of these third-years……………now come quickly: this Tendou Palace is where you will reunite in hell with your big brother.
30.
Toramaru: He, is this the final gate? That third-year head: I don’t know what he’s planning, but he’s extremely putting out his superiority.
Toramaru: So then, let’s go. It’s finally my turn…!!
Togashi: Wait.
Togashi: You’re all going back here. From here, I’m going alone.
Toramaru: Wh…what--!!
J: ………………
Momotarou: Tell us your reason.
Togashi: Coming this far, I can’t bring him back so easily.
Togashi: …………………I had only one big brother…
Toramaru: Big brother……!?
31.
Togashi: Togashi Genkichi…He was my only blood relative in this world, with no other family or relatives.
Genkichi: How’s that, Genji: This is an Otokojuku gakuran.
(TN: As I mentioned before, a “gakuran” is a traditional males school uniform in Japan)
Togashi: You’ve done it, big bro!!
Genkichi: Well, I’m going, Genji.
Togashi: Spring three years ago…………….my big brother left me alone, enrolling in Otokojuku where he would improve his manliness.
Togashi: Then a half-year later…I was called from a hospital in the middle of my middle school class.
Hospital: Center Hospital
Togashi: Big…brother--!!
Togashi: I immediately rushed there…my big brother, who was on the verge of death as a mess of blood there, was lying down on the bed.
(TN: I didn’t really know where to figure what “chidaruma” meant, so I made it as “mess of blood” at this time)
32.
Genkichi: The…head of the Third-Years of Otokojuku, Daigouin Jaki…………Da…Daiishin Paaren Seiha……………!!
(TN: You will hear the term soon enough again, but for the most part, “Daiishin Paaren Seiha” = “Great Shaking Intimidation Eight-Member Conquest”. A particular note: the kanji “shin” is based on the “shin” for “shaking”, but considering that this one is based on the right side kanji and doesn’t include the actual radical which is “hand”, it is unknown if this is the correct translation of “Daiishin”)
Togashi: Daiishin Paaren Seiha: it’s meaning was a mystery…those were his last words in this world.
Togashi: His school cap was the only thing he left me………
Togashi: Uuh.
Togashi: Uoo, big bro---!! (narration): With our hearts tied together, he was my irreplaceable big brother, who was my dad and my mom when our parents died…………
Togashi: And then when I enrolled in Otokojuku, I searched for them whenever I had free time, but I couldn’t even catch the true identities of the 3rds; I didn’t even see their shadows.
33.
Togashi: But he now has finally appeared before me.
Togashi: I’LL KILL HIM……!! I’LL TAKE THE LIFE OF THE THIRD-YEAR HEAD DAIGOUIN JAKI, THE KILLER OF MY BIG BROTHER.
Togashi: …………I didn’t intend to tell you. This was a matter of me going alone. Go back from here. I don’t any of you to get involved.
Toramaru: Uwahhaha, how could you be so out of character? Being serious like that doesn’t suit you.
Toramaru: Hehhehe, we’re all brothers. Weren’t we connected through life-and-death in the “Kyoura Daiyon Kyousatsu”?
Toramaru: Your enemy is our enemy.
Togashi: ……………………!!
34.
Momotarou: It’s as Toramaru said.
Togashi: ……………………
Momotarou: I don’t know why those guys would call us, but…their giving us a head-trampling welcome with their shoes and we’re not staying down to them forever.
Toramaru: So then, we’re finally reaching the star performer---!!
35.
Toramaru: Uo
Togashi: To…Toramaru--!!
Toramaru: E…lectricity………!!
Toramaru: ¡!
36.
Toramaru: HUH!!
Toramaru: Th…that’s---!!
“Top Hat”: Kuku, that fence and all the walls in this room has a ten-thousand volt current flowing through it. The moment you touch it, you’ll be going to that world burned to a crisp like that mouse.
37.
Baron Dino: My name is Baron Dino. I am the guardian of the Chinju Corridor’s Shiden Room.
(TN: First of all, the full name for this character is “Danshaku Dino”, but since “Danshaku” translates into “Baron”, we’ll just call him the natural “Baron Dino”. Second, “Shiden Room” or “Shidenbou” = “Flash Room”)
Baron Dino: Now go ahead, please progress. The head of we third-years is waiting in the reception area beyond this room.
Togashi: Be careful, Toramaru.
Toramaru: Heh, easy win, easy win. Let me give a brief greeting to the silk-hat oldie.
Toramaru: Heh, this is the Shiden Room. Though there is an electric current flowing through the walls and fence, there’s nothing special about this.
Toramaru: N—what’s that sound………!?
38.
Toramaru: !!
Toramaru: Huh!? What—Th…there’s something like a conveyor belt pulling me back through the corridor!!
Toramaru: Uo, I’m being thrusted towards the ten-thousand volt current---!!
Togashi: Run, Toramaru---!!
39.
Toramaru: Ooh---!!
Toramaru: Wh…what is th…this---!! I’m not moving ahead at all---!!
Baron Dino: Fuffufu, how do you feel? Let me give you some training to make you the world’s fastest runner.
40.
Baron Dino: Right now you’re at 33 km/hr…I reckon you can run the 100m in 11 seconds.
Baron Dino: So now, you’ll challenge the 100m in 10.1, the Japan record.
(TN: Remember, this is based on the record when this chapter was published in 1986)
Toramaru: Gu!!
Toramaru: Uoo~~~!!
Baron Dino: Kukkuku, something the matter? You’re rapidly going back.
Togashi: Toramaru, don’t go back---!!
41.
Toramaru: Ho…hold on---!!
Toramaru: Nuuu!!
Toramaru: Unuryaa---!!
Baron Dino: Hoo
42.
Baron Dino: So, you’re quite talented………so, let’s finally challenge 100m in 9.9, the record held by gold medalist Carl Lewis in the LA Olympics.
(TN: Alright, a bit of a history lesson: though he ran 9.99s in the 100m in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, enough to win the gold, Carl Lewis didn’t take the world record at the time. The record circa 1986 was held by Calvin Smith, who hit 9.93 (though some state he was assisted by wind) in 1983. Strangely enough, though, Carl would finally match that record after this chapter was published in 1987 and would ultimately break the record with 9.92 in Seoul in 1988. [Though there was Ben Johnson’s 9.83 around the same time…but that was assisted by steroids so it was thrown out] As of this translation, the record was actually just moved down to 9.58 by Usian Bolt on August 16th, 2009)
Togashi: Wh…what: 100m in 9.9s…………
Baron Dino: Kukkkuku, this is playing wickedly. The destiny awaiting you is only to be burned to a crisp, just like that mouse.
Baron Dino: ………………..!!
43.
Toramaru: I…I’ll go there now and kill you for messing with me!!
Togashi: L…look at that Toramaru. It’s just a bit but he’s moving forward……!!
Baron Dino: Kukkuku, the Seoul Olympics will be fun. But then, that’s a story if you survive that long……………
(TN: Another addendum to my 100m commentary above: the 100m in Seoul was won by Ben Johnson’s 9.83s, which could have been a world record…but due to his testing positive for the steroid stanozol, it was ultimately given to the 9.92s of Carl Lewis, which was also a world record. Johnson has disputed that to this day, claiming that someone snuck in the steroid to his drink)
TN: It's weird: in a chapter that essentially defines everything we need to know about this stage of the Third-Years battle, Togashi's truth regarding Jaki and introducing probably one of the most memorable characters in the series...I'm spending most of my time researching 100m dash records! If this was being translated in 1986, I wouldn't be obsessing: it would just be accepted that Carl Lewis is the fastest man alive and that the "Seoul Olympics will be interesting". (particularly after what Ben Johnson pulls) But I guess that's what happens when you end up doing it after time passes and the record falls again several days before translating this very chapter. Putting aside 100m talk, probably one of the key factors of this chapter is that we finally get an origin tale, both for Togashi's attendance in Otokojuku and in the meaning behind why he wears his trademark cap. In a weird way, when a boy sees his big brother as his entire world and sees what has happened at this horrific school, you could end up commiserating with him and all he's been through. I understand the camaraderie that is formed by being an Otokojuku student, but blood family sometimes just ends up being more important...though just as long as it doesn't drive you completely mad...like in other manga. And finally...yes, Baron Dino is that cool. Which goes to show you: if you want to be "the man" in a shonen manga, wear a silk top hat. (just ask Zeppelli from pt. 1 of JoJo)
