-> RTS Page for Sakigake!! Otoko Juku 95
The Tenchou Gorin Daibukai: a mysterious tournament upon which Edajima has assigned 16 powerful Otokojuku students to compete in! But what exactly is this tournament...and why does the principal want his students to compete in it!?
Vol. 11: Enter the Manager of Rouroukan!!
Chp. 95: Otokojuku's Secret History
7.
Edajima: TOUDOU HYOUE…HIS TRUE NAME IS FORMER JAPANESE NAVY LIEUTENANT COMMANDER AND SAMAN ISLAND DEPUTY COMMANDER ISA TAKEMITSU!
(TN: The title that Toudou held is "Shousa", which in naval terms is "lieutenant commander". In the army, the same title is known as "major", but for this case, it's "lieutenant commander")
Edajima: FINALLY THE TIME HAS COME! YOU SHOULD PREPARE YOURSELF………!!
8.-9.
(That’s foreshadowing…)
10.
First-Year 1: What? What’s this notice…………!?
First-Year 2: It’s been place in dead-center of campus.
First-Year 3: It has terribly difficult kanji.
Notice:
GET EXCITED:
WITH RESOLUTION, OUR SCHOOL HAS DECIDED TO HAVE ITS FIRST APPEARANCE IN THE TENCHOU GORIN DAIBUKAI. I WILL SPEAK LATER WITH THE 16 FIGHTERS GOING TO THE FRONT.
-PRINCIPAL OF OTOKOJUKU
EDAJIMA HEIHACHI
Tazawa: Tenchou Gorin Daibukai………!?
Matsuo: I’ve…got some bad premonition again.
11.
Voice: GOOD MORNING, GENTLEMEN!!
Sign: FIRST-YEARS
Onihige: With the Daiishin Paaren Seiha over and Momo, Togashi, Date, J and Toramaru healed of their wounds, all of you are gathered silently after a long time!! Starting today, we’re putting in our fighting spirit once again and cheerfully pursue knowledge!!
Onihige: O—shi, first period is math. Straining your voice from your stomachs, all of you will cheerfully yell your multiplication table---!!
First-Year: Ho—w is this math? Isn’t multiplication arithmetic?
Tazawa: Ossu, teacher, I have a question!!
Onihige: What is it, Tazawa!
Tazawa: What exactly is this Tenchou Gorin Daibukai, which was written on the campus notice this morning!?
12.
Onihige: It’s…about that. O—K, Date, you’d know this well. Tell him in place of me.
Date: Fu, with guys who haven’t really experienced skill, they wouldn’t know that name.
Date: The Tenchou Gorin Daibukai is a gathering of skill-prided martial artists and kenpoists who come from all over Japan…no, every country in the world, held once every four years. It’s a great, grand martial arts tournament where you fight betting on your life and your honor. The champion of this tournament is the strongest ones alive in name and reality.
Jaki: Anyhow, it’s a tournament with many mysteries hidden under a veil of secrecy. Even the organizer of the tournament is unknown, few people have been said to have seen him.
Tazawa: So then, in this grand tournament where you bet on life and honor, who from Otokojuku is participating? There really has to be 16 but…………!!
Onihige: You idiot, even I don’t know that!
13.
Speaker: LISTEN QUIETLY!!
Onihige: Uh!!
Onihige: Everyone stand up, it’s an emergency broadcast from our principal---!!
Speaker: First Years Tsurugi Momotarou, Date Omito, Togashi Genji, J, Toramaru Ryuuji!! Will just those five appear in the principal’s office immediately!!
Speaker: I am the principal of Otokojuku, Edajima Heihachi. That is all!
Toramaru: What………!?
14.
Toramaru: What business do we have with the principal?
Togashi: Heh, won’t he just make us wax and polish his head again?
Momotarou: Ossu, First-Year Tsurugi Momotarou and the others of the five are entering!
Edajima: Fine, enter!!
Momotarou: Pardon u……!!
15.
Togashi: Wh…what is that………!?
Toramaru: Is that a war film?
16.
Edajima: This is a film of the annihilation of the Japanese Army on Saman Island taken from an American bomber on April 5th, Showa 20 (1945).
Togashi: ………………!!
17.
Edajima: THE NUMBER OF CASUALTIES WAS 2,813…IT WAS SURELY HELL ON EARTH, A GHASTLY SCENE.
Momotarou: What? This is what you’ve specially called us for…………!?
Toramaru: We’ve come face to face with the reminiscences of the elderly; we’re no match.
Edajima: That American bomber was skillfully camouflaged regardless of being night; the Japanese Army’s secret bases, which were dotted throughout the island, were scorched down, without one remaining. Right, it was too accurate!
Edajima: But why……!!
18.
Edajima: This is the answer!!
Toramaru: Huh? There is a Japanese-looking man riding in the American plane.
Toramaru: And he’s pointing to the ground, like he’s telling them something.
Edajima: Correct: that man is the deputy-commander of Saman Island: Naval lieutenant commander Isa Takemitsu!! The man who sold to the enemy the lives of 2,813 brothers of the Japanese Army, driving them to death!!
19.
Edajima: At the time, Saman Island met with fierce attack by the American army every day; our battle progress was ultimately unfavorable. All of our soldiers were slipping through the mud, making the vegetation our provisions, and prepared to fight to their deaths until they exhausted their last bullet.
Edajima: From within, he slipped out of the night barracks and waved a white flag to the Americans who had landed there. He alone presented to the American army the secrets of the bases of the Japanese army so he could gain compensation of his life and security………!!
Edajima: And at the end of the war, he changed his name to Toudou Hyoue and walked about as the dog of the American occupying forces; by searching for many concessions on the basis of selling illegal goods illegally, he immediately built up a huge fortune. Even now, his wealth and power have made him exist as a feared wire puller in the worlds of politics and money with his ordinance.
(TN: Edajima’s speech here gets a bit muddled, need a bit of help, particularly in the first part where we see how Toudou became rich and the whole bit with the black market)
20.
Toramaru: He…does sound like an awful man…………
Togashi: Really, this snot became bad.
Toramaru: Bu…but, what relation does this man have towards us? You don’t want us to attack this guy, do you…………!?
Edajima: That’s impossible: he can’t be attacked. There have many who have gone for his life. Yet he's a deeply distrusting man who is also well known for his watchfulness. He has set up his housing like a fort with many-fold bodyguards protecting him day and night; he never shows himself in public.
Edajima: However, there's only just one chance that we can get near him.
Edajima: That's the Tenchou Gorin Daibukai!! That Toudou Hyoue is the organizer of the tournament!!
Togashi: ...............!!
21.
Edajima: The matches will be watched by way of TV monitors, but the champion team will be invited to his mansion where he will award them by his own hands. There aren't any other chances but then to kill him.
Edajima: Your mission is to become champion without fail in the Daibukai!! And then at the award ceremony, I myself will go down to judge his evil deeds!!
Togashi: I...isn't that great? He's an oldie who'll have a short remaining life.
Toramaru: Back off, we'll die in this...
Toramaru: Wha!!
22.
Edajima: Look at these bullet marks............!! I was showered by this much machine-gun fire while escaping alive from that island......I must clear away the grudge of the 2,813...just this tenacity is fastened to my life.
Momotarou: .....................!!
Toramaru: R...right: the principal is a survivor of the island.........!!
Edajima: I was one of the youth commission officers at the time. I was together with fourty-six Otokojuku students who were gathered in as students on the front.
Toramaru: Wha.........!! So...so then, those fourty-six were Otokojuku students too...our senpai.........We...we're taking down that Toudou for them............!!
Edajima: Yes! Their flowers were cherry blossoms too: they were exactly in the same year as all of you are now!!
(TN: The expression used here "their flowers were cherry blossoms too" is once again in reference to the bushido concept of death being like the "sakura"/"cherry blossom", as well as it being currently April in the manga when the cherry blossoms bloom)
23.
Wan Taaren: As you know, the Daibukai will have 16 participating...
Togashi & Toramaru: !!
Wan Taaren: Edajima-dono has waited a long time. To gather the 16 fighters that we expect will be champions!!
Togashi: Wa...Wan Taaren.........!!
Toramaru: Wh...what does he mean by that.........!?
Momotarou: Principal......!! They...can't be.........!!
Edajima: I am the principal of Otokojuku, Edajima Heihachi!
Wan Taaren: Enter---!!
24.-25.
Toramaru: IT'S...YOU-----!!
TN: Yeah...considering the end of the last chapter, you probably figured something was up on their returns. Heck, considering the Kyora Daiyon Kyousatsu ended with Date throwing himself into an active volcano (and surviving), seeing all the victims of the Paaren Seiha live just seems like typical shonen logic...well OK, Jaki really should have been there but I guess he needed recooperation time with Wan Taaren preventing him from being with Momo's group. As for the chapter itself...yeah, essentially this may be a massive worldwide tournament, but Edajima essentially is using this for personal revenge for the Saman Island incident. The incident itself really doesn't feel though that much like the typical "Americans ruined our lives" satire that Otokojuku usually does but more seems like "this Japanese soldier ruined it for all of us and he has to pay", hereby leading to Toudou being one factor (not the) behind Japan's final defeat in WWII. (though I looked it up...the only thing that actually occurred historically in the war on that day was the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp...but considering this already feels like a weird take on a fusion of Iwo Jima (which occurred in February '45) and Okinawa (April 1st, '45), just go with the flow...and essentially it was all as Edajima said: the Japanese knew they were in desperate times and were prepared to die fighting regardless on these islands as the Americans drew closer to the homeland) But hey, any excuse for a tournament arc, particularly as weird and wild as this one will be, works regardless.
