(TN: First of all, “Kuukyo” is actually a Japanese term for “emptiness”; secondly, the term that is used for “Buddhist monk” is “Hourikisou”: “sou” is “priest” or “monk”, while “houriki” is “the power of Buddhism”. The literal translation is probably “the monk with Buddhist power” but I decided to just make it “Buddhist monk” here)
Kuukyo: Your daughter is possessed by a Shugorei that is a ferocious evil spirit! Her crude personality is due to this…and with this, she’ll never in her life get married!

4. Shugorei

A “Shugorei” isn’t a thing that is possessed by everyone. There really are people who don’t have them. It isn’t a thing that is absolutely needed. Due to the profit of being saved from various things if you merely possess it, it’s been raised in importance if you hold a Shugorei.

Well, we can call a distinction of “Shugorei” and “Evil Spirit”, but it can’t be deduced there is a clear kind of distinction between both parties. There isn’t a distinction by a difference in abilities just in the difference in disposition of “Shugorei” and “Evil Spirits”, like how “good people” and “bad people” are together people the same even among people. If the disposition of the possessing spirit is a good thing, then we call it a “Shugorei”; and if it’s bad, then we call it an “Evil Spirit”.

This distinction is an extremely selfish thing. Again, with there not being a special requirement for being a Shugorei, they will flare up with a shift.

By the way: this Shugorei typically is a spirit of an ancestor, but we understand it as not just that recently. There is a story saying that the Shugorei of Ramosu, called a famous one-woman medium on TV, was a woman of the neighborhood. I don’t know if it’s true or not since I haven’t seen it myself, but that’s not an unbelievable story.

If you have a grandfather or grandmother around you, then it’s best to treat them with kindness. They may become a Shugorei in the distant future. It’s so!

TN: Yeah I know the mental and emotional backlash that is happening due to it, but...there is nothing at all wrong with Kyouko in long skirts, ribbons and fluffier pigtails. It's not her but it is still super-cute. Besides, the unveiling scene and the whole bit where she cries while Hiroshi and Nube go nuts is what makes it all worthwhile.

This chapter sort of further establishes the relationship situation between Hiroshi and Kyouko, which remind me a bit of the main couple from "Much Ado about Nothing" for some reason or another. Aside from Kyouko's "crying streak", the intro with the "blunt objects hitting Hiroshi and Kyouko knowing nothing" were brilliant...as was the weird confrontation where we see that Kyouko, even possessed, is just trying to be on his side. This chapter also is one of the first of the few multiparters this series has (they do exist but mostly happen much later on...or are more one-shots tied together into a story) and the first-semi-antagonist through that jerk monk Kuukyo. (it is nice to have an evil spiritualist...though he's more just in it for the money) But next time...we still have to get Kyouko back to normal...yeah no more fluffy pigtails but...it's Kyouko.
