Nube: Well then, I have a gag for loosening the mood. It’s a tale about an “onryou on the back”. A man riding in a taxi alone at night said to his driver: “Alright, I’ll get off here.” Alright, it’s fine here.” “There’s an onryou on your back.”
(TN: This is a weird gag because it really involves a changing of words. The three lines each involve a slow changing of words with addition and subtraction of characters/letters going from one to another to the last. It goes as such:
-“Hai, koko de oriyou” = “Alright, I’ll get off here.”
-“Hai, koko de onryou” = “Alright, its fine here.”
-“Haigo de onryou” = “There’s an onryou [a revengeful ghost] on your back”

I really hope it makes more sense now)

(TN: I didn’t know really how to translate it considering the ability was in Japanese but this felt more like either a spell or an item. The Japanese version of “Byakue Shinju”, with “Shinju” being the “Holy Curse”)

5. Basic Instinct

The model for Senkihime—the woman who killed 400 young women and bathed her body in their blood for her own good looks, was madam Countess Elizabeth Bathory, who existed in Middle Ages Hungary. There are many people who know about her, due to appearing in the manga “The Rose of Versailles” and recorded as a tune with her as a motif on an album by the rock band “X”.

This woman was an extremely cruel person, a person who was chocking from being said to have been pleased in placing numberless needles into females among the figures she attacked killing them, then tying them to a bed and watching the means they were pained with the fingers on their hands and legs were chopped off one by one. Even with how she appeared was because of her era where the position of a woman was pushed down and couldn’t be expressed outside beauty…adding in that sociological consideration, see you next time! (There was little to write about with what was before and after it this time…)

(TN: A couple things to add in addendum:
1. I was originally going to translate this as “The Ice Smile” as it was directly, but the Japanese is exactly the same title as the infamous 1992 thriller starring Sharon Stone…somehow it befits her seeing that it was a year later.
2. Most of what was said about Elizabeth Bathory is rather similar to what was known of her infamy. The song about her by X (AKA: “X Japan”) is called “Rose of Pain” and was off their 1989 album “Blue Blood”)

TN: I think we've learned a valuable lesson in this chapter: no it isn't "never change your guardian spirit" or "women can be evil just like men" (yeah, basing a spirit off Elizabeth Bathory definitely can prove that) It's this: never have Nube tell jokes to a super-cute and sensitive Kyouko ever again. Yeah, it will never happen again but in case it does...don't let it happen. Anyway, the whole scenario was a means to sort of establish further the Hiroshi/Kyouko relationship at this point, showing that they do look out for each other...even in their own strange ways. Meanwhile, some probably could consider the end where Kyouko's Shugorei returns at the exact moment it should...convenient, but at least it's the lesson of the lesson. It is strange though: we do get some multiparters later on, but this and the three coming up in the next volume are all the ones we're getting at this moment...but hey, when you're still establishing the world (and have fluffy-pigtailed Kyouko), you need to do these sorts of things.
