You would think a day away from Doumori Elementary would be a day of peace and relaxation for Nube's class...but while the day may be peaceful, you always have to worry about the trip home...

#10: Crash!

70.
Narrator: Today is a hike.
(TN: Not much to say here: Hiroshi bothers Kyouko, Kyouko bothers Hiroshi, both get tormented, and everyone else just eats and ignores them)

71.
Nube: This is nice scenery, Ritsuko-sensei!
Ritsuko: It really is. It would be much better if it weren’t for that newly built pylon.
Ritsuko: But I feel great after all. (YAHO--)
Nube: Ooh…Ritsuko-sensei has quite a beautiful voice…The echo of the mountain is like it’s playing a sonata…
Sign: DON’T BE RASH! MANY SUICIDES COMMITTED HERE
SFX: JI~~N
Ritsuko’s echo: Yaho—yaho—yaho—
Nube: So then I won’t lose this either. (YAHO--)

72.
Echo: REST IN PEACE—
Ritsuko: HUH, What was that now!?
Nube: Sorry, that somehow was the answer by these people—well…
Ritsuko: Kya—no—I’m scared—I hate you Nueno-sensei!
SFX: DOPYU~~
Nube: Ri…Ritsuko-sensei~~
Student 1: Well—let’s go, let’s go!
Student 2: Class 3 is bus 5!
Attendant: Well, everyone, we’re going home. Did you have fun--?
Students: YE—S
Attendant: Ara? What’s—wrong? Just the teacher is gloomy?
Hiroshi: He was rejected by Ritsuko-sensei!
Makoto: Don’t worry, that always happens!

73.
SFX: BURORO…AHAHAHA…
Kyouko: So…somehow there are many violent accidents on this road…
Hiroshi: Ah! Over there is another one!
Nube: It’s because there are many curves. (Ritsuko-sensei…gusun)

74.
Attendant: This area is called “Kimon Pass”, called a rough area since long ago. In legend, it’s because of the “Kimon”, which runs into the spirit world somewhere in this pass.
(TN: There are a couple notable facts that have to be explained here based on what was just said by the attendant:
1. “Kimon” literally translates into “demon gate”, but it actually has several other meanings, including “a thing to be avoided” as well as the direction of “northeast”, which is stated to be an unlucky direction
2. “Spirit World” = “Reikai”, but I think that actually has no real problem in being translated)
Hiroshi: What is a “Kimon”, teacher?
Nube: What’s that, Hiroshi: you don’t know about that either?
Nube: What’s called a “Kimon” is a place that has bad luck in Onmyoudou; it is there where car crash accidents come to easily occur.
(TN: Onmyoudou is Japanese esoteric cosmology combining natural sciences and the occult; it was actually rather crucial to the Imperial government until it was prohibited in the mid-19th century, but the ban has been since lifted)
Nube: Speaking scientifically, those sorts of places is where geomagnetism becomes strong. They become junction gates to the spirit world. The youkai who come from those are the sources for the occurrence of accidents.

75.
Attendant: Well, this teacher suddenly becomes energetic when it comes to spiritual stories. There’s some bad feeling about him.
SFX: GUSA!
Nube: AFTER ALL, I’M A SPIRITUALIST OTAKU; THAT’S WHY I’M HATED BY WOMEN, IJI IJI IJI
Kyouko: Hey hey.
Hiroshi: Have there been many accidents even now?
Attendant: Seems so…ten people have already died since the start of the month.
Attendant: In the stories by the people who survive…there was a bizarre phenomenon just before the accident…something strikes them with a wha—m—
SFX: WHA—M!!
Hiroshi: Wh…what was that staggering sound now?
Student: Were we struck by something…?
Voice: No…nothing is projecting in the mirror…
Hiroshi: So then? What happened from there?
Attendant: Um…yeah, after that, the brakes suddenly become ineffective…

76.
Bus Driver: Ah…a..ah.
Bus Driver: The brakes aren’t working.
SFX: GOOOOOO
Everyone: EEH!?
SFX: WHAA—M
Nube: !
Nube: This is…something is outside!!
SFX: ZAWA ZAWA ZAWA
Hiroshi: Teacher!!
Nube: Something that can’t be seen by the eyes!!
Bus Driver: A…ghost…a ghost is aiming for this bus.
Bus Driver: HI---!!
SFX: BA
Nube: He…hey, driver-san!! (You’re irresponsible…)

77.
Nube: !! Huh…
“Grubby”: UWA—
SFX: ROLL ROLL ROLL
Katsuya: TH…THE DRIVER IS!
Nube: Ku!
SFX: KI—KI—
Hiroshi: Teacher!
Nube: Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan!! Youkai, show yourself!!

78.-79.
Kyouko & Miki: KYAAAAA!!
Girl: NO---! A MONSTER--!
Hiroshi: A youkai truck!!
Nube: No you’re wrong!! It’s parasiting like a hermit crab to the accident car!

80.
“Crab”: KIMON, OPEN UP---…I HAVE TO GO HOME—
SFX: GASAGASA GASA
Nube: Jariki…that’s a harmless youkai that just comes and go through the interval to the real world as it moves through the outer layer of the spirit world, but…why!?
(TN: “Jariki” = “Inside-Sand Demon”)
Jariki: KIMON
Jariki: OPEN UP—
SFX: WHAA—M
Nube: UWA!!
Girl: Kya—watch o—ut! It will push us off!!
Nube: He’s a monster who comes in and out of the Kimon…but for some reason it’s angry due to coming to not go home with the Kimon shut.
Hiroshi: That’s why it’s attacking people!?

81.
Jariki: GO HOME~~~
SFX: GACHA--!!
“Grubby” & Katsuya: Hi—
Nube: Damn, it’s taking us from the back! Hiroshi! Take over driving!
Hiroshi: What!?
Nube: With your motion reflexes trained in soccer, you somehow can do this!
Kyouko: You can do this, because everyone’s lives are hanging on this.
Hiroshi: This is unreasonable--!
Nube: Be gone, evil spirit---! I understand you’re angry that you can’t go home with the Kimon shut, but stop your outbursts towards humans--!

82.
SFX: KIKIKI KIKI—
Students: Hii; Kyaaa!
Kyouko: We’ve surpassed 80km/hr!
SFX: KIKIKI
Hiroshi: We’re falling and not finished with these curves!!
Nube: Not yet! If we can go a bit further, then we’ll be at an emergency passing-place! Hold out until then!
Nube: ? What? I see a strange distortion in the road over there…

83.
Nube: That’s!
Nube: THE KIMON! But…it can’t open well with a warp in the magnetic field!
Nube: WHY!?
Nube: !
Nube: Right…the high-voltage currents of the newly-built power line has warped the magnetic field of the Kimon. That’s why…

84.
Nube: If I can intercept the current…HIROSHI!
Nube: I’m going to detach him from the bus! You put the bus in the passing-place!
Hiroshi: Ri…right!
Nube: Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan Koudai Reikan Byakue Kanzeon. Oni no Te! Now show your power!!

85.
SFX: ZAN
Jariki: GYAA!!
SFX: KIKIKI
Hiroshi: TEACHER—
Nube: Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan…
Nube: EXTEND! ONI NO TE!

86.
SFX: BARI BARI BARI BARI BARI
Hiroshi: Teacher—
SFX: GUWAWA
Jariki: THE KIMON OPENED…
Jariki: SO THEN…I’LL GO HOME…
SFX: BASHU SHUUUU

87.
SFX: ZAZA—GAGAGA
Sign: EMERGENCY PASSING PLACE
Kyouko: It stopped…
Hiroshi: We…we’re saved…
Hiroshi: And teacher!?
Nube: Fufu…I won’t be hurt that easily…because all of you dear students are waiting…
Ritsuko: Nueno-sensei—
Nube: Hey, Ritsuko-sensei.
Ritsuko: Kya—no—I’m scared—don’t come
SFX: DOPYUU~~
Nube: Heh…
Narrator: But Ritsuko-sensei wasn’t waiting…

NUBE-SENSEI’S GREAT YOUKAI ENCYCLOPEDIA

10. The Spirit World and the Kimon

The atmosphere above Earth generally goes to about 50km in the sky. Above from there, vapor molecules disassemble (ionize) into positive ions and negative ions due to the atmospheric pressure becoming too low. This state is called “plasma”, the air that is filled with this plasma is called the “ionosphere” or “thermosphere”.

For some reason I have to speak this difficult talk: in truth, the “spirit world” that is said to where people go after they die seems to be the ionosphere, but that’s because of what’s become clear in recent research. By position, from what is around 500km in the sky, even in the middle of the ionosphere, is an area called “sub-space”, which is nearly almost space. What reaches in seems to surround the round Earth to here seems to be the Spirit World. If this is true, then it can come to be that spirits = plasma and the wonderful unity of natural sciences and physics can be realized, but currently there isn’t yet conclusive proof.

So then, with spirits having a plasma condition, with that it receives an influence by way of geomagnetism. Plasma is entirely neutral, but that’s because they possess a charge of individual ions. These, for example, are things that are attracted to a North Pole. But since spirits are light beings to the extent they can be flown by the wind again, they can’t go to direct north. They’ll take the shifting power that avoids the rotation of the Earth (Coriolis Force, you’ll learn that in middle school) and float to the East. In other words, the souls of people after death fly in a north-east direction. Therefore we can conclude that the “Kimon”, the entrance to the spirit world, exists in a north-east direction. Long ago people detested the ill omens of the north-east, but there reasonably is a scientific foundation. How’s that? Aren’t people who think as such and study wonderfully interesting?

(TN: Note time:
1. The “Ionosphere” actually has two Japanese names: the general Japanese name is “Denrisou”, but this explanation calls it “denriken”. However, “thermosphere” is “netsuken” regardless.
2. The Coriolis Force/Coriolis Effect is the deflection of a moving object when viewed through rotation. Generally, when an object moves and appears to move north in perspective from the Earth, it will be moving towards the east as it moves north.)

TN: "So here's this giant enemy crab..."

Yeah, really had nothing to do with anything, I just had to say it after the chapter. (well it was that or "You must construct additional pylons!"...or in Nube's case, destroy them possibly) Originally I wasn't much of a fan of the chapter mostly due to the sadness of the previous one and the awesomeness of the rest of the volume, but it is one that more or less goes on the scenario of a youkai causing chaos due to circumstances beyond it's control...and pretty good in doing so. Somehow the part where the bus driver gets slashed by the youkai and his body parts just roll away was morbid but strangely funny...there was a bunch of other unintentional bits of humor as well. (never put "curves" in a sentence around Nube after thinking about Ritsuko-sensei...and never have him interact with anyone female...) There is also a matter regarding the insanity of Hiroshi driving the bus instead of Nube...but that's something that will spoil a punchline later on. So, for the most part everything seems to be settling in (sort of) and the scenarios of the series are starting to be realized...guess it's time for a new character to show up...and trust me, the next chapter when "he" appears is going to be sort of Nube's first real challenge up until now! (yeah there was Hatamonba...and the fact he nearly blew up if it weren't for a kappa...but yeah, this is going to be way worse than them!)
