In a combined effort of student and teacher, Nube and Hiroshi have put a stop to Tamamo's skull-stealing ways! But enemies as wily as a youko aren't easy to put down...especially with a new interest in his mind...

Tamamo: I thought Nueno-sensei would know this but
Tamamo: Since ancient times, youko memorize the Human-Transformation Jutsu when they reach the age of 400, turning into humans and bring calamity to the world. This is to punish humans, these filthy creatures who are proudly high strung in this world.

(TN: Tamamo’s new technique is in Japanese “Hiwao no Jutsu”; this really doesn’t directly TL but mostly has to be taken by the three kanji that make the technique up:
-“Hi” = “Fire”
-“Wa” = “Ring”
-“O” = “Tail”
Thus the direct name of the technique)

Caption: From rubbing itself together with its tail, a youko can raise a foxfire. This fire is a spiritual fire and is said to can completely burn everything.
(TN: “Foxfire”, which is the literal reading of “Kitsunebi”, can also be read as “Will o’ the Wisp” or “St. Elmo’s Fire”)

Tamamo: Fu, this is a jutsu that has altogether defeated spiritualists who fought against the Youko Tribe. Nueno-sensei, this jutsu shall be raised however much is the level of your power.
Tamamo: EN NO ODZUNU LEVEL!
(TN: Tamamo’s levels to his Fire-Ring Tail Jutsu are named after specific and well known priests…however there is a massive gaffe that I will be bringing up now as opposed to waiting for when the series itself realizes it. However, in this case: “En no Odzunu” is in reference to En no Gyouja, a Japanese ascetic and mystic born in 634 seen to be the founder of Shugendou, which is a religion that fuses concepts of Taoism, Buddhism and Shinto and stated to have many spiritual powers.)
Kyouko: GUAAAA

Tamamo: DOUKYOU LEVEL!!
(TN: And here’s the gaffe, but we need a bit of explanation: Doukyou was a monk of the Nara era, born in 700 who is notable as a monk of the Dharma school within Buddhism and nearly became emperor of Japan prior to being stopped by a proclamation preventing him from taking power. The gaffe which occurred here is simple: how could a monk who worked for the Japanese court be more powerful than the founder of Shugendou? There is an explanation made later as to why Doukyou was more powerful in Tamamo’s levels than En no Odzunu…but I won’t get into that now; nor will I change it so we can have Tamamo’s response to this mistake.)
Tamamo: Magnificent! You’re not a normal person after all! You’ve already surpassed the Doukyou level…so then…how about…!
Tamamo: KUUKAI LEVEL!!
(TN: Now here is someone more powerful: Kuukai, also known as Koubou Daishi, is the founder of Shingon Buddhism, considered one of the major esoteric Buddhist beliefs currently in Japan, mostly known for no true “God” as in other Buddhist beliefs but with a central “nature of all things”)
Kyouko: Teacher—it’s hot—

Tamamo: Fufu…hahaha. I want this power!

Kyouko: Teacher, shouldn’t you treat those burns!
Tamamo: NUENO-SENSEI…THE SECRET OF YOUR POWER…WILL ABSOLUTELY BE TAKEN BY TAMAMO!

TN: You know something: if some series had an incident as important as the fight with Tamamo last time, they'd start suddenly changing focus and evolving in a means that would make them completely different than how they started off. But strangely...Nube isn't like that. Yes, Tamamo did return (did we really need that fanservice revival scene) and faced Nube again, but it was under different circumstances...and that is what makes him interesting. He isn't some villain who decides to suddenly report to a higher enemy, he rather shows the flaws in his previous research and wants to use Nube as an experiment to find out what exactly he possesses that is so important to a being like a human. He further uses his supernatural abilities such as his foxfire (yeah, even with that slight gaffe) not to attack and kill Nube but more to seemingly test his will and see how he is able to have the power he possesses to protect those he cares about. The scene where he handles the foxfire until finally bashing at Tamamo with the Oni no Te (yeah, very misleading title considering the Oni no Te wasn't even used until the end...) showed how protective Nube is, wanting to make sure his students are taken care of and putting their safety over his own. Of course...that probably could lead to him getting more from Ritsuko-sensei if he works hard enough...and I mean really hard.
