Tamamo: Catching that giant Remugyo with those nets? Nonsense! You’re people who don’t go despising that thing’s power…
Nube: If you’re not going to help then will you be quiet? We have this idea and we’re doing it.
Hiroshi: That’s—right! You shouldn’t talk though you’re a fox!
Kyouko: Back off, Hiroshi!

Nube: And then we’ll stretch it on the trees around the campus and drag it outside the fog with essentially a trawl net!

Hiroshi: How could we be pulled into fishing on campus…
Kyouko: But what will we do after we catch it? Won’t it immediately regenerate even if we kill it?
Nube: Well
Tamamo: No…it’ll be fine.
Tamamo: Remugyo was originally a deep-sea fish that transformed into a youkai…therefore it’s weak to the light of the sun. If you take it out of the fog and hit it with sunlight, it will lose its regeneration ability…
Hiroshi: Right: because deep-sea fish can only live in darkness.
Nube: …Why are you telling us this!?
Tamamo: Fu
Tamamo: I just want to know the secret of your power…The secret of this ability of raising spiritual power infinitely.
Nube: That’s right. But unfortunately this isn’t a “power” to me.
Nube: What it is…is merely a feeling that can’t be controlled even by myself that I can’t exist without protecting children, even if I die!
Tamamo: ………

(TN: A strange combination here that probably is or isn’t intentional: “umitsukareru” is Japanese for “to tire out”, but the “umi” part is using the kanji for the verb of “laying eggs”)

Nube: 4 trees…5 trees…how fast, as expected of Nu-chan of the parallel bars.
Hiroshi: But can we lift that huge creature with our power?
Kyouko: Ri…right: it’s physically impossible.
Tamamo: No…don’t worry, that thing isn’t heavy; because it doesn’t exist in this world.
Nube: This is…the last.
Nube: Al—right, all of you, pull it!
SFX: SATSU
Kyouko: HEEVE-HO!
SFX: GUI

Miki: Kyouko-chan, what is he saying? Why is he fighting with Tamamo-sensei?
Kyouko: Eh? We…well
Kyouko: Actually, Tamamo-sensei is a spiritualist teacher at a level that won’t lose to Nube! That’s it…

Students: Teacher! Please, save everyone!
Miki: At this rate, Nube-sensei and Akira and the others will die! The only one we can rely on is you…so please!

12. Psychic Ability and Flames

Psychic abilities, which are moving or floating objects in the air without touching them with hands, and spiritual power are the same thing. Psychic abilities are greatly all the more divided into the duo of E.S.P. (Extra-Sensory Perception… apparitions, the foresight ability of telepathy, etc.) and P.K. (Psychokinesis…will-power, instantaneous movement, etc.)

In a Stephen King novel, there is a tale of a girl who causes flames when her emotions get excited, but there are surprisingly many people who possess this sort of ability. That’s because causing fire is a comparatively rudimentary technique even among the will-powers. It is necessary to raise the temperature above the flash point for an object to burn, but you must furiously vibrate the molecules of the object in order to increase the temperature. Without complete control of will-power, it will come to be the exact condition to emit chaotically and it will catch fire. This will come to objects (in other words the prey of the burning) with a high flash point and it will vibrate and start to move. What is called a “poltergeist” (the poltergeist phenomenon) will occur. (A poltergeist is thought of as a thing caused by an evil spirit, but actually many times it’s the result of someone’s will-power being released unconsciously. In particular, girls in puberty are seen many times possessing this ability.)

By the way: Tamamo-sensei’s Fire-Ring Tail Jutsu differs fundamentally in the way the flames are created from what’s been explained until now. That’s because the thing that is burning is not in the air; with a situation of flames being produced by just will-power, this technique can’t be done by ordinary will-power. Spiritual flames are different from normal flames, it isn’t brought about with a chemical reaction. Furthermore it’s an extremely high temperature. Creating the same condition artificially must use a giant device called an electron accelerator. I say the temperature at that time was said to be 10 Million or 100 Million degrees. I don’t want to fight such a strong youkai again, but somehow Tamamo-sensei has popularity with girls…Will he appear again…?

(TN: It’s probably easy to assume but the Stephen King novel which was mentioned here was “Firestarter”, which was also made to a film in 1984.)

(TN: Kyouko was the “character of the volume” this time BTW…Nube probably just didn’t want to be left behind this time around)

TN: First of all: with all that's been going on the last week or so, I just want to say the Nube project will continue even with things going a tad beyond anything any of us expected. Even if I have to rip out my own manga to shreds (which I personally own) or the scanslations end up being reduced to people drawing stick figures interpreting what was supposed to happen through my scripts, the series will have a full run of scripts from start to finish!

As for the chapter itself...Tamamo really does need to learn a lot more about humans if he ever returns, huh? (well he may just considering he was on that poster but...yeah, it could just be that this was the greatest enemy Nube ever had in 31 volumes...and there he goes at the end of voume 2) It really isn't he failed as a youko, it's more that he really didn't trust what Nube was planning, even if he nearly got himself killed facing the unstoppable nature of Remugyo, and finally learned something in the end. Though I still really seem to find it strange Miki was the one who finally woke him up (sort of) to what he really needs to do...but considering she's been strange for the last volume or so (and had this crush on a youko for some reason), at least it was enough to finally make him move. I do have one weird thought though: considering the Remugyo was supposed to be powerful enough to take 10 priests to stop it last time, why didn't they just attack it by bringing it into the sunlight in the first place? But then again...I guess the rampage was at night or they just couldn't get it out of the fog prior to sealing it away.

At least with the Remugyo story (and Tamamo's stay) done with, we're finally for the most part done with most of the multi-parters for the moment. Nothing against them but I'm so used to Nube being a one-shot based series (well for the time being) that having three two-parters in short succession just made me go crazy. But next time we begin a new volume, with all new strange threats, dangers...and maybe a few old ones we've seen before.
