Hell Teacher Nube Oneshot : Hell Teacher Nubo (1st Pilot)

en
+ posted by StrangerAtaru as translation on May 6, 2010 01:12 | Go to Hell Teacher Nube

When is "Hell Teacher Nube" not quite "Hell Teacher Nube"? When it's a one-shot written way before the beginning of the series! It is Nube...but this tale is where Nube stood way before it all began!

One-shot: Hell Teacher Nubo (first pilot)
(TN: As I mentioned prior: there were originally two Nube pilots, both by the name of “Hell Teacher Nubo”. This first pilot was in Jump’s “Autumn Special” of 1992…like the other pilot, Nubo will remain “Nube”, but…there are going to be a lot of differences compared to the last pilot…)

167.
Narrator: Exorcisms, spirit purification, prayer: in recent years, there have become many immoral business shams that take advantage of this boom and demand outrageous prices for them. But it wasn’t like that long ago.
Narrator: Then, the old lady of the candy shop and the owner of the okonomiyaki shop possessed altars and cheerfully conducted exorcisms. Yes…spiritualists actually had familiar existence for the children.
Narrator: But now these people have already become few. He……may still survive.

168.
Narrator: NUENO MEISUKE, 25 YEARS OLD, OCCUPATION: SCHOOL TEACHER
SPECIAL YOMIKIRI (ONE-SHOT)

Voice: So—then, today there is a shopping district festival in front of the station but!
SFX: KI—N KO—N KA—N KO—N
Caption: WARD-ESTABLISHED DOUMORI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
(TN: “Ward-established” is “kuritsu”, which literally is “established by the ward”)
Voice: All of you youngsters should understand to not loiter around there too late, alright!?
Boy: Nubo-sensei, are you coming with us too--?
Nube: Fufufu, will I? Your teacher—

169.
Nube: I’ve got a date with Imai-sensei, the school Madonna, and a car! That’s what I have~~~!! I do—n’t have time to play with all of you!
Students: EEH~~you’re kidding~~~BOO—BOO—she’ll give you the cold shoulder anyhow; quit that~~~!
Nube: Let’s drive my new Porsche! (HYAHHOU~~~)
Student 1: Liar----!
Student 2: Nubo bought a Porsche!
Students: Adulterer—go to hell—
Akira: ………
Hiroshi: Chie~~~! Nubo isn’t co—ming; well, noth—ing we can—do even if we go.
Katsuya: Right, right.
SFX: ZORO ZORO ZORO
Miki: And I had thought of asking him a long-awaited scary story.
Akira: Ke! What’s with Nubo, Nubo. That foolish teacher has gathered this popularity. It hasn’t amounted to much in this school!
SFX: PIKU
Hiroshi: ----…right, Akira doesn’t know having just come to transfer in!
SFX: PON
Akira: N?
Katsuya: Teacher isn’t a normal man!
Miki: That’s---right! He’s a teacher with something hidden—

170.
Miki: He can do exorcisms! He’s~~spi~~ritual~~ly powered~~~!
Akira: Spirit…
Akira: Ahahahaha, that’s stupid!
Miki: I’m not lying, there’s proof!
Miki: Why…does teacher always put a glove on his left hand? It’s said it’s because he made a mistake when he exorcised an oni that was possessing his grandmother when he was a child and it became the Oni no Te~~
Akira: His left hand is…an oni?
Akira: Ridiculous! That story’s made up!
Akira: Perhaps he burned it or something.
SFX: VOOON
Voice: Out of the way, out of the way—
SFX: KIKIKIKI
Miki: Kya!
Katsuya: Uwa
Katsuya: He…he really has a Porsche!?
Hiroshi: Ooh~~~amazing—cool---!

171.
SFX: GON
Nube: Uge—
SFX: DOSUN DOSUN
Imai: Get me out.
(TN: Though she essentially is this pilot’s version of Ritsuko-sensei, she’s a different character…so I’ll be keeping her Imai-sensei)
Students: ??
Imai: Kya—kya—
SFX: ROLL ROLL ROLL
Imai: Ugya—
Imai: No~~~more~~you were lying on this being a new car! (A~~H) Isn’t this a ridiculously defective car---¡
SFX: GACHA
Nube: Pl…please hold on, Imai-sensei!!
Nube: I’ll tell you the truth: actually!
Imai: Actually?
Nube: This car is a trouble car that has killed three owners…it was really cheap but……it still hasn’t had an exorcism……
Spirit: OO—H
Imai: Kya~~~~!
Nube: It’s alright! Because I’ll exorcise it immediately!
Imai: A~~H A~~H
Nube: Don’t cry! I’ll work it over!
Hiroshi: Yes! Nubo is starting an exorcism---!
Students: OOH—
Miki: Amazing! You’ll see it live! Akira-kun, hurry!
Akira: Ah…yes.

172.
Nube: NAMU DAIJI DAIHI KYUUGU KYUUNAN KOUDAI REIKAN BYAKUE KANNON…
SFX: KUWA
SFX: koku…
Nube: This thing—you---! Get yourself out here--! Ah, it’s gone into the crack. He—y, fly out! Don’t loiter around! Rest in peace quickly—ow, a counterattack;
SFX: BASHI BASHI BASHI | ZURU
Akira: Are you taking on a cockroach—
Nube: Chi, it’s a stubborn opponent!
Akira: What, what is this cheat! This wouldn’t be believed now even by kindergartener—s!!
Hiroshi: Teacher is amazing—
Miki: So cool—
Girl: It’s so numbing—
Nube: HA HA HA
Nube: It’s completed!
SFX: KIRIN!
Imai: Re…really?
Nube: It’s already at peace, let’s drive it now! (HA HA HA)
Akira: That liar—
SFX: BUO!
Nube: Huh?
Imai: KYA--!

173.
Nube: The exorcism failed—
Miki: It’s because the story is that Teacher’s success rate is 50%--
Miki: So—then, the date is cancelled! You’re going to the festival!
Nube: I…Imai-sensei~~
Nube: Let go~~! I’m on a date with Imai-sensei~~~!
Miki: It’s bad to give this up!
Hiroshi: You’ve already been rejected! Now, let’s go toge—ther to the festiva—l!
Akira: Hmph…!
Voice: All the good children wi—ll be given a candy-bag present!
Hiroshi: You’re a broken-hearted man! Eat this and you’ll be better!
Nube: Tohoho…
Miki: How great--! We’ve got candy to the most!
Big Kid: I won’t be impoverished in food with this.
Akira: Hmph! That’s cheap candy……
Hiroshi: Teacher! We must give candy to Monohoshi as well!
(TN: Monohoshi literally translates into “wants things”)
Nube: N, well, you’ve quickly were good in remembering.
Nube: (Chanting)
Akira: What’s Monohoshi?
Miki: A monster; a ghost! It emerges from this muddy ditch!
(TN: “Muddy ditch” in Japanese is “dobugawa”, which can also be translated into “dirty river”)

174.
Miki: On festival night 20 years ago, a sole child who was worrying about bullying committed suicide…he pulled out the pool’s stopper and slipped down the drain outlet…his corpse flowed for tens of meters in the narrow drain……when he emerged, he was already rotted sloppily……!!
Akira: Ridiculous! What is this Monohoshi!
Miki: Ah! You’re scared, you’re scared!
Nube: HA HA HA
Nube: About “Monohoshi”—Akira! That child who died would have had extreme enjoyment with a bag of candy they were receiving at the festival.
Nube: However, the bullies were malicious to him…and he didn’t receive it…therefore since then, on the night of the festival every year…
Nube: I WANT CANDY~~I WANT IT~~So Monohoshi is heard with that~~voice…like this.
Hiroshi: Like teacher before he’s paid.
Miki: KYAHAHA
Nube: I’m returning reality to the story!
Akira: Chie…it’s a fictional story for making popularity. I really hate those types!
Akira: Even at my former school, there was a popular teacher who was skilled at stories……but that teacher was seen and not seen abandoning me when I was bullied in class!
Akira: Can I believe in them! In teacher…in my friends…(to himself) Hmph…! What is this Monohoshi…!

175.
SFX: GAN
Nube: !!
SFX: GUSHA GUSHA | goron
Miki: Aah~~~!!
Hiroshi: Akira! What are you doing?
Miki: Don’t you believe our story!?
Akira: Ah—I don’t believe in that made-up tale…
Miki: Dummy!
SFX: PAN! | TE
Miki: Why—do you have that separate opposition!?
Hiroshi: Scary~
Miki: Quickly pay attention to our needs in being familiar with the class! Please become much more docile!
Akira: Uh…
Akira: Shut up! You’ve given too much help, you’ve dummies!!
SFX: DA!
Miki: Akira-kun!
Hiroshi: A—ah, those—things spoiled it! (really…)
Big Kid: The Jizou’s head is ripped off…(it’s weirdness is excessive…)
(TN: A Jizou, in this case, also possesses the “Ksitigarbha” meaning, but here takes on the literal meaning of the “Earth Treasury” or “Earth Moon” and is in reference to a small statue usually seen tied to Buddhist lore with shaved bald head and staff)
Big Kid: Please stop, the commuters will be surprised.
Katsuya: Teacher…will this be fine…
Nube: Is he “curse”?

176.
Nube: I’ll say this clearly…this is ve~~~ry DANGEROUS! (It’s coming, it’s coming~~)
Students: EEH!?
Akira: ----…I did it again. Why—does this always happen?
SFX: PLOP
Akira: I do want to really get along with teacher and my friends but…
Akira: I have a feeling that what’s like association is just somewhere on the surface, even if I talk and play with them……I feel I can’t have real friendship and I just repel them.
Akira: It’s all over with this. I won’t be talking to anyone tomorrow…! I’m alone…again…!
Voice: I WANT~~~
SFX: GABA

177.
Akira: ……………Damn…well, is this the act of them?
Akira: You won’t be able to threaten me! I know you’re hidden! Come out qui—etly!!
Voice: I WANT~~~
SFX; NU~~~
Akira: WAA~~~~
Akira: Uwa—uwa—uwa—
SFX: GASHA GASHA GASHA
Akira: Uwaaaa~~~
Akira: Haa haa haa

178.
Akira: What was that…it was like a rotten slug…it was like a human wrist but.
Akira: It…can’t really be Monohoshi……!!
Voice: I WANT~~~
Akira: !!
Voice: I WANT...
SFX: GOBO GOBO | PICHA PICHA
Akira: UWAAA~~~
Akira: It’s Monohoshi! The actual Monohoshi! So…someone save me—
SFX: NYURU
SFX; BAKO BAKO BAKO BAKO

179.
Akira: I…I’ll run to the back gate! (Haa haa haa) If I’m there, then I’ll be near home…
Akira: Haa haa haa
Voice: I WANT~~~
SFX: ZAWA ZAWA ZAWA ZAWA
Voice: I WANT~~~
Akira: Right…the circumference of the school is entirely surrounded by gutters. I…I can’t run anywhere………
Voice: I WANT—I WANT—
Akira: Uwaaa, I’m sorry—forgive me—
SFX: DON!
Akira: WAA~~

180.
Nube: You’ll bother the neighbors bringing out this loud voice in the middle of the night.
Akira: TEACHER!
Nube: It’s been 4 pages!
Akira: Everyone!
Miki: You left just your bag; we thought you were drawn into the river.
Hiroshi: We were worried about that!
Akira: Waa~~~
Nube: Oh, well well.
SFX: HISHI
Nube: But it has become a tad noisy. Shall we apologize to Monohoshi ahead of time?
Voice: I WANT~~I WANT~~I WANT~~
Sign: BOYS’ LOCKER ROOM
Nube: (Recites sutra)
(TN: The first part is the typical sutra, but the rest is a different one, so I won’t really be TLing it)
SFX: GOKU…
Miki: Even if you’re scared, be calm. Teacher’s Buddhist power is for real.
(TN: Yes, Miki does refer to Nube’s spiritual powers as “Buddhist power”; that’s because she uses the term “houriki”, which is literally “The Power of Buddhism”)
Akira: Ye…yes.
Akira: That’s right: for the moment he’s doing this trick. He perfectly knows his sutras…

181.
Nube: Annyon Hasho Muni Karakara Sowaka Chichin Pai Pai Buta No Ketsu
Akira: Teacher, what…is that sutra called?
Nube: Byakue Shinju*
*: A spell that’s merely folk
(TN: “Byakue Shinju” = “God-Spell of Byakue”; most likely Byakue-Kannon)
Nube: --Well, it should be but since I forgot it, I ad libbed it from part-way.
Akira: Wh—at, you don’t know—the correct sutra—because you’re not a Buddhist priest!
Nube: There are foreign and animal spirits too…
Nube: An exorcism is the same as flirting: you summon up your spirit and guts and the rest is being forcefully coercive.
Miki: In spite of not being successful at flirting--!
Akira: I…can’t believe in him after all!
Nube: So then—let’s set joking aside! We’ll finally summon the spirit! Spirit who died leaving regrets in this world! I will answer your infatuation: now in this place…
SFX: GUGU
Nube: Show your fo~~rm!!
SFX: KIRA~~~
SFX: BUSU
SFX: YURA~~KU YURA~~KU
Akira: Ah…ah…aah

182.
Monohoshi: I WANT~~~~
Akira: Uwaaaa!
Nube: Apparition “Monohoshi”: the true reason for this name is it was named from the form of this shape that’s like a monohoshizao by floating for tens of meters in sewer pipes 30 meters in diameter.
(TN: A “monohoshizao” is a pole put up to hang laundry to dry)

183.
Nube: Now go, Akira! Give it the candy-bag and it will solve its infatuation!
Miki: Akira-kun.
Akira: Ri…right!
SFX: GOKURI
Akira: Monohoshi-kun…this…is your share of candy. I’m sorry for earlier. Since I’m returning this…forgive me……
Monohoshi: I WANT~~I WANT
Hiroshi: Will it really rest in peace with this, teacher?
Nube: --It should but…..
Nube: No, wait!?
Nube: With how this is a child’s spirit, at most is it a thing that lost it’s way with the candy bag? They put up even a Jizou and a memorial service was held and yet; now that I mention it, Monohoshi was a bullied child who was alone without any friends…perhaps what he wanted was……!
Nube: Ho…hold on, Akira! Don’t get near Monohoshi!
Akira: Eh?
SFX: PUKU | YURA~~RI | PUKU PUKU
Monohoshi: I WANT~~~
Akria: !!

184.
Monohoshi: I WANT A FRIEND~~
Akira: Waaa!?
Nube: Damn this—it didn’t want the candy, it wanted a friend. Even that, it want’s a friend like Akira who knows the loneliness of being alone!
SFX: PASO—N!
Nube: AKIRA~~~!!
SFX: ZABA!!
Akira: Gabo!
SFX: ZURU! ZURU…GOBO GOBO GOBO
Nube: Hold on—Monohoshi—
SFX: ZABUN!
Nube: Going and taking that child is unforgivable!!
Nube: Hold on, Akira! I’ll save you soon!
SFX: GU!
Nube: Oni sealed by the Dharani of Shingon, now show…
(TN: I may have mention prior that “Shingon” is “Shingon Buddhism”, one of the main mainstream Japanese Buddhist styles and a surviving Esoteric Buddhist belief. However, “Dharani” is a Buddhist ritual speech similar to a mantra, found in both esoteric and exoteric rituals, different from mantras merely being in Esoteric Buddhism.)
Nube: YOUR POWER—
SFX: KARI
Akira: !!

185.
Akira: THE ONI NO TE!?
Nube: The Oni no Te is a mass of aura similar to you. What’s beyond the wrist isn’t a thing of this world.
SFX: DOKUN DOKUN DOKUN DOKUN
Nube: By this, I can physically attack spirits like you……
SFX: DA!
Nube: IT’S MY ONLY WEAPON!
Katsuya: Akira!
SFX: ZAPA—N
Miki: Akira-kun.
Hiroshi: …Too---!!
SFX: DOSA
Miki: Akira-kun, are you alright!?
Akira: Teacher is!!
SFX: GABA!
Miki: Fighting!

186.
Monohoshi: WHY…WHY ARE YOU IN MY WAY…I JUST WANTED A FRIEND…
SFX; OOH~~~OOH~~~
Nube: Monohoshi, you’re a pathetic ghost…but no matter how long you prowls around this world, you will be eternally alone………
Nube: Go home! To the world where you should live! You will have friends in there.
Monohoshi: REALLY…?
Akira: Teacher~~
Miki: It’ll be fine, Teacher will certainly win!
Akira: Bu…but, isn’t teacher’s exorcism success rate 50%!? If he fails………
Miki: 50% includes all situations! Teacher is a teacher! When he’s in a situation fighting for his students……
Miki: His success rate is…
SFX: ZAZA—
Miki: !

187.
Nube: 100%!!! That Monohoshi understood and is resting in peace!
Hiroshi: You’ve done it, Teacher!!
Akira: That guy is…
Akira: For real…! (c…cool…!!)
Akira (Narrating): The next day, I became a popular person in class…!
Voices: Eeh~~~you’re kidding~~I envy you~~!
Akira: Somehow it’s because I alone saw the “Oni no Te”!......However
Nube: Imai-sensei, it is a cursed necklace that had 8 owners die, but I’ve exorcised it, so—here!
Imai: KYA—I don’t want i~~t!!
Akira: Is that really the same person…(I feel bad)
Jizou: Happy happy.
(End of One-Shot)

NUBE-SENSEI’S GREAT YOUKAI ENCYCLOPEDIA

18. Hell Teacher Nubo

This work is the origin of “Nube”, known by the people who know.

Why did “Nubo” become “Nube”!? Since we wrote the reason in Vol. 1, we’ll omit it here. However, it’s not just the name: since the establishments, the faces and the personalities of the introduced people are qu~~it~~e different, we think it partitions the feeling of incompatability. Why are they different!?

We think the people who don’t know don’t know, but with a situation of serialization in Shonen Jump (the wish of a very great teacher), usually there is a theory that a one-shot is published in a special issue first. If it’s popular in there, then they publish a one-shot in an actual magazine, furthermore if it comes off as popular in there, then it’s finally serialized, and though it was an inaccessible long way, it’s there. The time interval is usually from a half-year to a year. If it takes even a year, then there’s a reason that what’s established and the designs will steadily end up changing, coming to end up a completely different manga. But, well, since it’s fundamentally the same view of this world in the outline, it ended up recorded in a special book. People who say “I don’t like incompatibilities!” should please read this by shifting the character cast and designs by the powers of your imagination. (Or it would be better to write it all out yourself…isn’t there someone who can do that?)

…Sorry for the shoptalk…

189.
Hiroshi: NEXT IS VOLUME 4!
(TN: Hiroshi’s the lead this time…and, yeah, I know Katsuya and Makoto are never going to be on the soccer team…but we haven’t met the team proper yet so see them as stand-ins)

TN: Well...wasn't this pilot strange!? I mean, it is similar to the second pilot and the first chapter but...this just feels way off compared to them in so many ways. Where exactly to start...I guess I could just list them but you ended up seeing them for yourself so I'll just put down my reaction:
-Nube is...well, Nube, but somehow he feels more happy-go-lucky compared to the actual series. Yeah Nube is easy-going in the actual story too, but here he just seems to laugh up at anything and everything outside of duty. He is more mellowed out though still happy in the actual series but I did like him here.
-Probably one of the bigger shocks of the chapter: Akira, not Hiroshi, is the main character. In fact, Akira is the only character that is named in this one-shot! Basically IMHO, I think this pilot compared to the second and the main series seems to be the most reflective of Nube being an homage to Devilman in particular. Akira for the most part is Akira (maybe a tad more helpless) but somehow he seems to reflect from what I've heard the original nature of Akira from Go Nagai's classic.
-Miki...is Kyouko, there really is no question about it. A lot less gossipy and mischievous compared to Miki-proper, yet still more adventurous compared to Akira, probably reflecting the Miki of Devilman compared to the Miki we actually get in-series. And meanwhile Kyouko...Kyouko...well, did you see the first panel Akira was in on the third page? Look in the bottom left corner...yeah, I think that's Kyouko's first appearance in Nube lore, unknowing of her greater destiny in series proper. (heck, I don't know if that was intentional or unintentional that the design was used for the real Kyouko)
-Somehow Hiroshi seems to show a bit of who he would eventually be...but a bit more generic. Somehow my guess is Makura and Okano really were going so far with the Devilman-homaging concept that they sort of didn't expect him to take over Akira's role...and that they would likewise bring in the idea of "Dokonjo Gaeru" being a likewise influence. The same probably can be said about Katsuya...though I'm a tad surprised he existed this long and someone like Makoto didn't exist until the second pilot.
-Imai-sensei pretty much is the woman who would evolve into Ritsuko-sensei...personally I think Ritsuko is way cuter but they both share the same personality: they hate spiritual stuff and Nube screws up around them a ton.
-One thing I actually like about this pilot over the second pilot and the first chapter...is that Hoshimono, the youkai in this pilot, is more a misunderstood youkai that just needed to be fought and then negotiated with. Somehow this fits more with the Nube world as we've seen it develop compared to the beligerrent, even evil nature of Kimori or Tsukumo no Ashi no Mushi in the other pilots.
-Probably one other weird factor that makes me feel more a Devilman influence compared to later is that we see slight physical transformation in Nube when he unleashes the Oni no Te...not just the oni claw released but his hair just starts standing on end, sort of showing him differently. Meanwhile...somehow the story of Nube gaining it as a child when trying to save his grandma...just doesn't seem to mesh compare to how the story evolved: it just seemed to make it way too unbelievable compared to the story of "saving a child after arriving in Doumori Elementary" like we hear in the real story.
-Oh...and somehow the comedy just is top notch here: from Nube "treating his new Porsche like a roach that has to be squashed" (you'll be seeing something similar about a possessed Porsche eventually in continuity) to Nube's love sorrows (the flirting bit) and him making up the sutra as he went along at one point.

All in all, somehow it's a very weird pilot but it works. I think they held off on revealing it until this volume, though, because this feels so different compared to the second-pilot, which was merely changed here or there for chp. 1. But hey...at least with the pilots done, it's continuity from here on out...and trust me, the next volume is where things just keep getting more interesting. (just bring some candy along for it...just in case)
