Ghost Story: The Tree-Climbing Ghost
-> RTS Page for Hell Teacher Nube 47
There are many legends that are as scary as they are tragic, but shouldn't be handled lightly. When Nube discovers one nearby, his students decide to take matters into their own hands...possibly biting more than they can chew!
#47: Ghost Story: The Tree-Climbing Ghost
108.
Nube: Eh~~for that reason, the baby is brought by a stork--…
SFX: MUWA
Nube: Here I’ll show with a picture—
SFX: GUJA GUJA
Student 1: Teacher, teacher
Student 2: The chalk was sodden with sweat.
Hiroshi: Teacher~~let’s stop our class—already—
Kyouko: Let’s go to a coffee shop; I heard they have air conditioning—
Nube: Wh…what are you saying?
Nube: The point is it’s unsatisfactory because this window is shut. If I open this window, a cool breeze will…
SFX: GARA…
109.
SFX: DODODO | GAGAGAGA | GON GON GON GON | BAKI BAKI | GATSUN
SFX: PISHA
Nube: What, what is that, where is that construction!?
Miki: Doumori Temple behind us.
(TN: The “temple” is in reference to a Buddhist temple)
Katsuya: They’re doing reconstruction on the main temple.
Voice: The priest over there is rich. There are stories that he manages a parking lot and a large apartment…and his car is a Benz…and that he even has 5 mistresses!
SFX: DODODO…GAGAGA…
Kyouko: That priest surely gives a feeling of clear gain!
Miki: It would have been better if Nube wasn’t a teacher and became a priest.
Nube: You have that annoying story…in spite of this f**king heat!
Principal: Nueno-kun, can you come!
SFX: GARA
110.
Worker 1: It’s terrible…this is the 5th person already.
SFX: ZAWA ZAWA ZAWA
Worker 2: An accident occurred when he chopped at that tree.
Worker 3: Isn’t this some sort of curse?
Nube: What exactly is this…
Oshou: Ooh! You’re that rumored spiritualist teacher!
(TN: We don’t really find out until later his name, but this priest, who is a recurring character, will later be revealed by the name of Shura Oshou. Since it won’t be for a while and it really isn’t that important a matter, I decided to just name him now)
Oshou: Actually I want you to exorcise that tree.
Worker: Do it yourself since you are a priest.
Nube: The tree?
111.
Oshou: That tree…wouldn’t have a reason to be a sacred tree but it has a legend.
(TN: The “sacred tree” is actually a “shinboku”, which is a tree that is used as a “shintai” [which are either “kami”/ “gods” or merely the place where a god/kami resides for a period] and are used as a place of worship)
SFX: MI—N MI—N MI—N
Oshou: Beneath the tree is…the grave of Sasahime, a concubine of Daimyou Houjoushi, who governed this land 400 years ago. This princess married in by a political marriage from the Satomi Clan of Kazusa but…
(TN: The Satomi Clan is a clan of samurai descended from Nitta Yoshishige that lasted for over 400 years from the 12th century through the death of the clan in 1622. One of the areas of their domain was Kazusa Province, a province on Honshu’s Bousou Peninsula in today’s Chiba Prefecture)
Oshou: By some mistake, she fell in love with a young samurai gatewatcher. The angry master slayed the princess and the samurai was killed at the end of seven days and nights of cruel torture.
112.
Oshou: It’s been said since then that every year on a full moon night at the end of July, when the duo were killed, the spirit of the young warrior will come to reclaim the bones of the princess he fully loved…however, for whatever reason, the young warrior goes away while crying without discovering her bones…that’s why it is repeated every year. As proof, there are holes dug at the foundation of the tree and no matter how they are filled up they quickly become as they were before.
Miki: Wo~~w, that’s a ghost story—huh!
Hiroshi: Ghost stories are such happy stories.
(TN: Hiroshi makes another silly pun here: the word for “ghost story” is “kaidan”, but he ends up changing it into “yukaidan”, with “yukai” as “happy”)
Oshou: What’s with those brats? I was scared with that story.
Nube: Well, I’ll look for a bit.
Nube: There’s a feeling of a grudge that’s amazingly muddled.
SFX: DORO DORO DORO
Oshou: The muddled is you.
(TN: “Muddled” is “dorodoro” in Japanese, thus the weird joke here)
Kyouko: He’s straining in spite of the heat…
113.
Nube: At any rate, please properly hold a memorial service for them! This is due to a grudge that hasn’t disappeared even after 400 years…
Oshou: Eh~~that’s a pain; you do it, since I’ll be grateful.
Worker: Sir, sir?
Miki: A grudge of untied love~~that’s quite—scary—
Kyouko: These spirits that cause shivers have been few recently.
SFX: PIKU
Hiroshi: How’s this: we’ll hold on for the evening cool and test our guts.
Nube: NO—WAY!!
Hiroshi: What?
Kyouko: It’s merely a spirit that just digs holes.
Nube: What, all of you are grade schoolers—! Do you think its fine playing and walking around in the middle of the night?
Hiroshi: Eh!! (Grade schoolers…)
Kyouko: It’s not—that, we have this sort of set-up.
Katsuya: It’s something we’ve forgotten from the experiences of grade schoolers recently.
Miki: I have things like D-cups!
Nube: Them~~it’s because their always being saved by me…that they’ve forgotten the dread of spirits~~
Katsuya: Hey, we’ll gather tonight…
Miki: That’ll be fine!! Let’s do it!
114.
Mrs. Hosokawa: Ara, all of you have a study group? Well done.
Katsuya: How large is the bust of your mom, Miki?
Miki: She’s 130cm! Amazing, huh?
(TN: It’s really hard to determine how big a “130cm bust” is without really knowing of the body size. You have to know of the size of the body before the bust before measuring the chest size, with the difference leading to an understanding of “cup”. For example: if a woman had a band-size of, say, 70cm (about 32in), then her “D-cup” would mean her bust would be about 90cm around the largest area of her chest). By comparison, if Mrs. Hosokawa was also 70cm, then the difference would be 130-70 = 60cm…yeah, I doubt her body is that slender considering how huge the bra would be. On the other hand, if you want to make it a tad more manageable, if a more “womanly” form like Mrs. Hosokawa was 80cm (the typical “36” seen as part of a “perfect body”, then the difference would be 50cm, making her an Q-cup. Maybe more manageable would be if she had a 90cm body, thus 130cm bust would be an L…or a 100cm body, which would lead to it being a G cup…but regardless, 130cm is huge no matter how big the body is and this whole conversation was just my own insane ranting to figure out the bra size of a fictional character who is rather minor even though she’s the mother of one of the main students)
Kyouko: They’re youkai, mother and daughter.
Voice 1: Well we~~~have become used to normally seeing ghosts and have become ghost gourmets.
Voice 2: Be a bit softer. I don’t want to be afraid.
Voice 3: At most we should wish a scary spirit would come, haha…
Hiroshi: Alright, we’ve climbed on top of the tree. So then, what sort of spirit will appear…
115.
SFX: CHIRI—N…
SFX: CHIRI—N…CHIRI—N…
Hiroshi: Wh…what, are they people of the temple?
Kyouko: We…well…
Kyouko: That’s something that appears in historical plays…
Katsuya: Is it a coffin?
Kyouko: Seems like it.
Kyouko: It’s been placed down.
Hiroshi: What’s starting…
116.
SFX: GO~~~N…|GIIIIIIII

Kyouko: It’s as if he’s screaming like it’s resounding from the depths of the earth.

“Samurai”: I WANT TO MEET YOU…MY LOVE…
122.

Nube: Al—right, there isn’t any danger…how about we test our guts with teacher in attendance? This will be cool—
Hiroshi, Kyouko, Miki & Katsuya: HIEEEE!!

<SUDARA>
Creation: Possessing a human, it plunders the will and hopes in a person’s soul. The person with their soul taken will come to be irresponsible, lethargic and unemotional; in other words, a “Hang-Loose” personality, but that may be a tad good thing with the Japanese nowadays.
Commentary: Right. This is because they say the Japanese work too hard. You’re referring to the problems with society, as expected being 20!! But your pen name is weird!
(TN: While it has a “kanji reading” here, “Hang-Loose” is the Japanese word “Suudara”, which was really hard for me to find out there)
TN: I know this chapter was supposed to be a tragic tale of forelorned love and of redemption in the face of historical tragedy. I know this chapter is supposed to essentially be a huge reminder of why Nube's students are still inexperienced in the whole youkai thing even if a massive chunk of their fear has been drained away with their experiences with the horrible. I even know this was Oshou (that nutty Buddhist priest who has no idea of honor and seems more in it for the buck) first appearance in the series and we're going to see more of him in the near future. But for some reason...most of what I wanted to say ended up getting drained away about my discussion of the bust of Mrs. Hosokawa. Yeah, it's a minor silly thing but determining how big a 130-cm. bust is an important matter...aside from whatever potential Miki herself may have. This series can do that admittedly: one chapter you talk of little girls speaking of "their first time" in their previous life, the next we talk about the massive bust of the mother of a student. I personally like this sort of silly fanservice over the other kinds...but I admit there are those who probably just don't get it.
So moving from the talk of Mrs. Hosokawa (they were huge though, 130cm), this is still a crucial chapter in the development both of the students and of having them realize they are a tad naive regarding every single matter getting easily figured out just because they experience the supernatural nearly every day. It was sort of lucky they did at least find the skeleton of the princess considering that...if they didn't they probably would be dead. (and yeah, Katsuya probably is more to blame than Miki, though she did get a huge part of her body hurt from the whole ordeal) Maybe someday they'll probably grow to the point they can figure it out even without little spiritual power...but we do know that Miki is going to keep growing for a while too! (yeah, one more joke on her behalf, I can't help it if her mom is such a looker)
