Once, a cute yukionna came down from the mountain to take Nube as her frozen, eternal love. But after convincing her the problem in doing so, she went away, still with a lingering but promising to not be trouble again...until one day...

#49: The Midsummer Yukionna

(TN: “Cold Express Delivery” is in reference to “Cool Takkyuubin”, which is not just merely a delivery service but one that delivers cold items like food that has to remain cold for freshness. Yamato Transport, one of the biggest delivery services in Japan, has a large “cold express delivery” services…we’ll be going into another factor with that company next volume)

Nube: What’s this: “Please eat me quickly”; is this cold mizuyoukan?
(TN: “Mizuyoukan” is a sweet jelly made with red bean paste, sugar and agar, usually eaten as a dessert)

(TN: A “late-summer greeting card”, known in Japanese is “Shochuu Mimai”, is a gift or a greeting card usually in conjunction to the summer season to keep people, usually friends or those who can’t get out, in good spirits. It is mostly sent on or around August 8th, a day that is known in Asian cultures as “Liqiu” and is the day when the sun is exactly at 135 degrees in longitude and is acknowledged as the beginning of Autumn)

(TN: I had a tough time here explaining what Yukime was saying because of the “tan to” at the start. “Tan” is the kanji for “one” or “single” and it is obvious that Yukime wants to be a “single-serving”, so the “yourself” part is just inferring to her wanting Nube and not, say, Hiroshi’s idea of splitting her)

Yukime: Why’s that, teacher; a yukionna is a being that continues to love in her life a male that she came to love once…you can’t forget that so easily.
(TN: Not sure about the context: if it’s “Nube can’t forget about yukionna lore…or Yukime can’t forget about Nube”…went with the former since Nube sort of figured she’d go away and forget about him)
SFX: Kaa~~
Hiroshi: Hold on a moment: yukionna put into ice and take away the men that they love.
Kyouko: You won’t be doing that! Please give up and return to the mountain!
Yukime: That I can’t seem to do.

(TN: “Yamagami” = “Mountain God”; you can go with either)
Mountain God: Yukime, there is a law that a yukionna must put a human man in ice and placed nearby when they turn 16. Until you do, it is unforgivable to return to the mountain.
Nube: You couldn’t go home to the mountain!?
Kyouko: Even so, you can’t take Nube and use him.
Yukime: That I understood plenty with last time…Nueno-sensei doesn’t have a reason to abandon all of you and come to the mountain…therefore…
Yukime: I’ll be living with Nueno-sensei in this town! If I can’t go home to the mountain, then I’ll be by your side as a human…
SFX: Gaba
Kyouko, Hiroshi & Miki: Eh--!!
Miki: That’s what’s called “cohabitating people”~~!? (Kya--)
Kyouko: You can’t be joking: cohabitating with a youkai; that’s would be trouble for Nube…

Nube: No, well…that’s a problem. You and I are youkai and human and my room is small and untidy…

Hiroshi: He seems really pleasant but
Miki: A--ah, the bottom of his nose has stretched!
Nube: At…at any rate, please stay in the night-duty room tonight. I’ll think from there on afterwards.
Hiroshi: Will Nube be alright?
Miki: Oh--well, it’s just the two of them, a young man and woman (heart)
Kyouko: Nube, be level on this…

Yukime: Ufufu…making Nueno-sensei’s meal like this, it’s like we’re simulating the warm household of both of us in the future (heart)

Nube: It’z culd: the air conditioner’s at max and I’m eating hiyashi while watching a video of “Nankyoku Monogatari”…
(TN: A few notes here:
1. “Hiyashi Somen”, literally “Chilled Somen”, is a notable Japanese summer delicacy involving cooking somen before deluging it in cold icy water, then serving it with scallions, ginger and a dipping sauce similar to a soy sauce
2. “Nankyoku Monogatari” (literally translating into “Antarctica Story” but released in the US as “Antarctica”) is a 1983 Japanese film about the trials and tribulations of a Japanese Antarctic scientific crew in the late 50s, in particular studying a pack of huskies who are forced to attempt to survive an extremely harsh winter at the southern end of the Earth. The film was a massive hit in Japan, was notable for a soundtrack by Greek artist Vangelis (who also did “Chariots of Fire” and “Blade Runner” the years prior) and was even an inspiration for the 2006 US film “Eight Below”
3. Nube literally says “Sabui“ here due to the cold, leading to his mispronouncing of “samui“, I tried to make it work in English but not sure if my interpretation worked)

Nube: Because I’m not malicious, I’d feel awkward even in driving her out unreasonably.

(TN: A couple things:
1. “After-bath chill” in Japanese is “Yuzame”, which is literally “feeling chilly after taking a bath…though in Nube’s case, having gotten out of Yukime’s ice water…
2. “A hot night“ is actually in conjunction to an expression of “Nettaiya“, which is specifically a night where the temperature does not go below 25 degrees C/78 degrees F)

Nube: Right: yesterday I understood well that we couldn’t live together for one day.
Yukime: Generally, it’s impossible and I can’t go back to that strict mountain god. Are you serious?
Nube: There are quite many mountains. Even if it’s the Alps or the Himalayas.
Yukime: You’re cruel…
Yukime: Understood! I’m returning to the mountain! I’ll suitably find a man and put him on ice…!

Nube: Ah--you’ll--do that. Eh?

Kyouko: Nube, what’s wrong?

Yukime: Fine then! There’s no reason at all that the kindest man in the world is just Nueno-sensei…There are just those kinds of men; there are plenty of other kind men…

Nube: I was worried that you couldn’t return to the mountain, that you couldn’t live as a human and yet…there was nothing I could do…on the other hand, it was like I was thrusting you away coldly…I am…I am…!
Nube: You’ve come to where you can’t reach recovery…If this is what it is, then it would have been better to have given you my blur of a life, become frozen in ice and gone back to the mountain…forgive me…Yukime-kun…

Narrator: And so, Yukime-san disappeared from in front of Nube.

Narrator: But she was found the next day.
Yukime: Ah, Nueno-sensei--I got a part-time job here and will be living here--! Because I’m not giving up on teacher, ever!

Kyouko: She was saved by taking refuge in a refrigerated truck.
Hiroshi: She is lively.
Nube: I’m happy you’re alive…I had been sympathetic earlier--huh.

<SHIKIGAMI - ONIDAMA-KUN>

Creation: Shikigami that are dolls made by Nube. They protect students with spiritual power that is pumped into the Onidama-kun.

Commentary: You thought not of an enemy but an ally youkai. With these cute youkai, they can seem to reside without scaring even Ritsuko-sensei.

TN: Yeah...I guess that was probably one of the biggest certainties in this series; that regardless of the first chapter, Yukime would be back in a big way. And this time, she's done so by moving into Doumori, even if her attempt at living with Nube...didn't quite go as planned. But then again her situation is just unique: she no longer really wants to believe in the old "yukionna concept" of love, but at the same time still wants Nube and thinks that living in human society will eventually find a way to make it work out somehow or another. Of course, this time...turned out to be with hilarious results, considering that when you've got someone that cold living in Tokyo at the hottest time of the year with...well, Nube. (probably my favorite bit has to be the bed scene with Yukime's little snowman stunt...I used that avatar a couple times considering it's how cute it is when she popped right out of the snowman...there was also her little "entrance"...but I nearly confused it with an incident that's coming up a couple volumes from now that is just weird and could be seen by some as creepy) In a way, we do see that maybe Yukime is changing...but the change is all tied to the high standards she experienced due to her experience with Nube as a child: she still wants a man but it seems to show that she wants one who is noble and strong in character like Nube when he saved her life...of course this ultimately just keeps linking her back to Nube considering Yukime is just obsessed, but the fact that she is selfless in saving the child from the fire even with the risk to her life with the circumstances and with her own weak constitution in the summer shows that she isn't merely just some naive cute yukionna who at one time tried to kill Nube because of her "obligations". Of course, with Yukime here to stay, the second year is off with a bang...and trust me, with her around, the scenario (both her love...and the whole lingering back-plot with the mountain god) is just going to get more interesting! (well with Yukime around, things are always interesting)
