Miki’s Great Jinx Operation!
-> RTS Page for Hell Teacher Nube 52
Miki Hosokawa: the cute troublemaker of 5-3 whose willing to do anything regarding the spiritual realm. And anything includes...a lot of crazy jinxes that may give her wealth and good fortune! (if they work of course...)
#52: Miki’s Great Jinx Operation!
27.
*Jinx…originally it had a meaning of a sign prior to a bad thing, but recently it has been used with a meaning of “omen-carrier” or “a good-luck charm”.
(TN: With this the topic at hand in this chapter, a few more bits of trivia/info about the concept of a “jinx” :
-Usually jinxes are curses for a minor misfortune to occur to the person cast upon. Likewise jinx can be the person itself or an object that carries said curse.
-For the most part, a jinx is seen as tied to bad things; if someone mentions something good that has been happening, it has been said to “jinx” it leading to the misfortune to befall the good thing.
-The origin of the word is tied to two sources: one is the “wryneck bird”, which is “iynx” in Latin and has the peculiar ability to turn its head 180 degrees. The other possibly is tied to a song called “Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines”, which has a lyric about misfortune occurring to a man working for the Army
Though as we’ll see in this chapter, jinx in this version may not completely be negative…and may just be a little spell for something to occur, bad or good. Of course…considering the title refers to Miki pulling them…well, just prepare yourself)
28.
Caption: Jinx: If you find an airplane, a wish will come true if you recite it 100 times before you come to not see it!!
SFX: Ki~~n
Miki: I want to be really rich. I want to be really rich. (Zee zee) I want to be really rich. I want to be really rich. (Haa haa)
SFX: Dododododododo
Kyouko: Miki…(to herself) I stopped my greeting.
SFX: Dododododo
Miki: I want to be really rich. I want to be a Daifuku Mochi. (Uooo)
(TN: No you’re not misreading it: Miki screwed up big time with her “wish”. In the midst of her saying “Ooganemochi ni naritai” (the “I want to be very rich” part), she accidentally slipped out “Daifukumochi ni naritai”; while there is a slight similarity with “daifuku” being “great fortune” and thus could be translated as “I want to possess a great fortune”, “Daifukumochi” is usually in conjunction not with wealth or fortune but with a specific mochi [glutenous rice cake] filled with anko [sweet red bean past] that usually is in many colors [whilte, green or pink] and seen as a means of giving good luck…but then again, by switching her wish to wanting to be a cake, I think Miki’s jinx has just been screwed)
29.
SFX: Tsuru…suttee—n!
Miki: Kyaaa!
Kyouko: Just a moment, Miki, are you alright!?
Miki: U~h, I slipped on fecal poop…
Miki: Ah! (Wan wan|woof woof)
(TN: Since Miki goes “wan” here which is the Japanese word for “woof”, you could go with either in the scan)
SFX: Pu~~n….
Caption: Jinx: If a black cat crosses your eyes in the morning and you see it pooping, then you will have good fortune for that day.
SFX: Muri muri muri bote bote
Caption: Enlarged Drawing
Miki: Poop of a black cat---!!
Miki: Miki-chan is so happy! Today I’ll have luck!
SFX: Pu~~n…
Kyouko: Sh…she’ll really have it with poo…
(TN: This is a weird joke that can go one of two ways: as Kyouko speaks about Miki’s current scenario, the word “un” is emphasized. “Un” can both have a meaning of “luck” or could just be the beginning of “unko”, the Japanese word for “poop”. I tried my best to emphasize the joke by having Kyouko say she’ll have “luck” (the “it” in my line) with “poop”)
30.
Miki: …When I thought that, there were three consecutive green-number cars~~!! (Waa~~h)
(TN: “Green-number cars” is a factor tied to Japanese license plates, where all privately-owned cars, not to mentioned two-wheel vehicles like mopeds, have green numbers and text on them with the plate itself in another color. Commercial vehicles tend to have numbers in other colors like white or yellow)
SFX: Shiku shiku shiku shiku | Buoo~~buoo~~
Kyouko: Miki…she’s saying that, she’s saying that.
Caption: Jinx: If you see three green-number cars, then you will have misfortune for that one day.
Voice: Jinxes!?
Miki: Right, because they are treated somewhere as modern good-luck charms--!
Boox: Jinx
Nube: That’s foolish. There isn’t any authenticity to me.
Nube: Well, isn’t this nice? While we’re at it, you’re getting stupid with them and you should stop. (Haha)
Miki: Jinx: writing with hiragana, teachers with seven characters will not be liked by women in their entire life. Nu-E-No-Me-I-Su-Ke. Ah, that’s right—
(TN: The way Miki spells out Nube’s real name is as if she’s basing it off the hiragana [the main characters used for Japanese words], thus the spelling that you see here. Though one wonders if this involves only human women…strangely I don’t think this works on yukionna)
31.
Nube: Let’s start class.
Miki: Oh, this is convenient: a jinx for not being chosen by your teacher in class. (What is this?) You make a cross with pencils and put it towards the teacher. The rest mentions it’s nothing but not getting chosen.
Nube: So then, from pg. 65…Miki, please read it.
Nube: Um—this problem…Miki, solve it.
Nube: So today’s homework will be done by Miki as our example—
SFX: Dossari (a heap)
Miki: Really, both Kyouko and Nube!
SFX: Ki—n ko—n ka—n ko—n
Miki: Making light of jinxes~~

Miki: Jinxes are absolutely successful! You believe in them too. From here, I’ll prove it.

SFX: Bata bata bata
33.
Miki: What, you’re hurt? I give condolences.
Bird: Kurukku Kurukku
SFX: Bata bata
Miki: Someone will save you from here. See ya.
(TN: The “See ya” is just Miki going “Sainara”, an abridged version of “sayonara”)

SFX: Bata bata bata bata
Bird: Kurukku—
SFX: Pata pata koro koro
Miki: Though I’m already irritated……you’ll get better immediately if you’re wrapped in that much bandages. Please watch me: from here, I’m going to test every jinx, get success and startle Nube.
SFX: Koro koro…
Bird: Kurukku—Kurukku~~
Caption: Jinx: Write the name of the opposite sex that you like on an adhesive bandage (they can’t be initials) and stick them on for three days and by the 7th day, there will be mutual love.
Miki: Men are all my slaves…(Ufufu)
Caption: Wrote the names of the boys in the class.
Hiroshi: Ge! What is that?
Katsuya: She’s disgusting~~that girl…
34.
Caption: Jinx: When you lose something, you’ll find it immediately by shouting out “garlic”.
Miki: Garlic—garlic garlic garliiii~~c
Caption: Jinx: If you buy a 50-yen eraser and use it up with all eraser remains tied together at a time before a test, you’ll have a good score.
SFX: Geshi geshi geshi geshi (Erase erase erase erase)
Caption: Jinx: When you put the following items into a purse, your money will multiply: a 10-yen coin that’s notched, an item kept with gold-colored tape in the hole of 5-yen, the bones of a bream head, the cast-off skin of a snake (or cicada), and the Jack card of a deck.
(TN: While most of these make obvious sense, the “bream” part is a peculiar translation. The word used is “tai”, which is tied to a kanji that represents the fish family of “sparidae”, which are usually breams that include the “red sea bream”. [pagrus major] It is assumed that this fish (also known as “madai” or “Genuine tai/bream”) is the one needed for the jinx since it is a notable fish eaten in Japan on New Years or at festive occasions, but I chose to just state it as “bream” due to the reading of “tai” as opposed to a specific one)
Miki: Fufufu…
SFX: Docchari…
35.
Caption: Jinx: when cheering, you will certainly win by wearing in reverse the things on your body.
Miki: Hurray—hurray—Hi-Ro-Shi
SFX: Gyo | suka
Caption: Was surprised and missed.
Caption: Jinx: It will be easy to win in prize postcards if you write with a purple-colored pen. (We’re sorry if you don’t win: by the author)
(TN: The slight comment here by the authors regarding “prize postcards” is possibly in conjunction with the postcard system used for ranking manga for WSJ: every postcard sent in with the data about the weekly manga in the magazine is put in for a drawing for several weekly prizes, usually as incentive for the readers to send them in so they can get an accurate reading at the most popular manga in the magazine)
Miki: With this, the Nube original T-shirt will be mine. (Upupupu…)
(TN: Somehow I think Miki is sending in Jump postcards considering that a newer manga usually gets merchandise only in conjunction with the magazine and magazine prizes like this…and considering Nube just made it past its first year by this point…)
Caption: Jinx: If you see a yellow VW, you will become happy when you say “Turtle-san, come with happiness”. If you see a purple VW, you will come to have misfortune if you don’t say “Turtle-san, go over there with unhappiness”.
(TN: I used “VW” here because the chapter refers to “Wagon”/”Waagen”, which in Japanese is short for “Volkswagen”...and of course note the Beetle in the scene)
Miki: Turtle-san, happiness.
Kyouko: Trouble for strangers, trouble for strangers.
Caption: This varies by region.
36.
Caption: And so, many days later, the effect of the jinxes, as expected, was…
SFX: Shun…
Nube: Ha ha ha: not even one was successful!?
Miki: I don’t have mutual love with anyone, fell apart with tests, was off with those prizes, and lost money.
Nube: Well, it’s more important to have steady endeavor than to rely on good luck charms.
Miki: Chie.
Miki: I’m disappointed with those things. Here, it’s feed. Accept it and eat.
Bird: Kurukku—kurukku—
37.
Miki: N? Aren’t your wounds steadily getting healed?

Bird: Kurukku~~
38.
Miki: Eh?
Kyouko: If this was Miki again, then she did a half-hearted treatment.
Hiroshi: A—ah, pathetic—
Miki: It…it can’t be that it can’t fly!? With this…thoroughly…!?
Nube: U—m, well…uh…
Miki: That’s…
Bird: Kurukku—
SFX: Da
Nube: Hey, Miki.
Miki: It’s my fault…! It’s because I only gave a half-hearted treatment…because I was thinking of healing it when relevantly rejecting it…
SFX: Buroro…
39.
Caption: Jinx: Your wish will come true if you touch the courier mark for “Chagawa Express”.
(TN: “Chagawa Express” is a parody of “Sagawa Express”, a major delivery company based out of Kyoto and who delivers throughout Asia. A particularly weird infamy for this company is that a scandal connected to corruption and yakuza that brought down Japanese Prime Minister Morihito Hosokawa, whom we mentioned in another chapter)
Miki: It’s my fault that that bird can’t fly. Please, god!! Let that bird fly once again!
SFX: Buoo…
Miki: Here it comes.

Miki: Please, save that bird…! God, that is my wish.
41.
Miki: Grant my…(out loud) Haa haa haa
Truck: Chagawa Express
Miki: Wish!!
SFX: Bari bari bari bari bari
(TN: The “logo” Miki touches here is a composite of two different transport companies: the “running man” part is tied to Sagawa Transport’s seal, while the cat head is in reference to the “black cat” logo for rival Yamato Transport)
42.
SFX: Dodododododo
43.
Hiroshi: Nube!!
SFX: Gogogogogogo
Kyouko: Wh…what are those lights!?
Nube: They’re…the feelings of children who believe in jinxes…
Nube: Perhaps Miki made a wish. It’s coming true.
Hiroshi: Is that fine!?
Kyouko: But…those are fabrications of children!? The cases of those exact spells and sutras, at any rate…
(TN: I’m not sure if the last sentence was Nube or Kyouko saying it…the dialogue seems like it’s Kyouko but with the follow-up line by Nube, it could be him building up to what he says next)
Nube: Somehow, the origin for spells and sutras is they were made by someone. They’re certainly fabricated things. And amidst merely a large number of people believing in them and using them, they come to obtain power. Jinxes are the same. If the number of people who believe in them from their heart multiplies, then they may come to cause miracles…
44.
Nube: The people who say jinxes are…invented by the younger generation like yours. They may be the magic of the new age…
SFX: Tobo tobo…
Nube: Miki!
SFX: Ba
45.
(TN: Nothing to say about this panel…but the next…)
Narrator: From then on, Miki became increasingly jinx-crazy.
Miki: Jinx jinx I—did it--!
(TN: Miki ends up cheering here “Houyarehou”, which seems to emphasize that she “did it”, but not sure considering I couldn’t quite find a meaning for it)
Sign: Jinx
Kyouko: She’s prattling like she created a new religion.
Nube: It’s futile; her earnestness is different from that time.

-If you buy new shoes, you’ll improve at sports by stepping on your friends.

TN: (appears to nearly be barfing but holds it back) So...did anyone else besides me feel that way about the cat-poop bit? I mean, I get that sometimes there are really disgusting ideas for jinxes, but to literally show a defecating cat in progress just to allow for Miki's jinx...sometimes you just have to wonder about this series. Aside from that "bit" (ewwww), this actually was a decent chapter regarding not just jinxes, but in a way a bit of Nube's concepts regarding belief in...well, anything. Personally I'm not a religious man, but some of what was said at the climax regarding the evolution of a concept, from someone's idea to many people picking up on it to it literally becoming empowered by having many followers just sounds like the evolution of many religions...but I don't want to really turn this into a theocracy lesson cause I hate talking about those types of things. The main concept of the story though was touching and shows that Miki does care, she sometimes worries a bit too much about the trivial to really do what really matters until its nearly too late. She didn't ignore the bird at least, she was just so haphazard that her attempt at "healing it" so she could get back to her jinx project nearly ruined it until the jinx power at the end saved it. (some probably thought it was a tad weird but I did like it in that it showed Miki does have a noble heart underneath those boobs) I just really hope some of you don't fall for some of these jinxes too much...well at least the more disturbing ones. (runs off to vomit in a bathroom)

Nube: The people who say jinxes are…invented by the younger generation like yours. They may be the magic of the new age…
SFX: Tobo tobo…
Nube: Miki!
