The supernatural is known to cause problems, but are all their problems necessarily a worst-case scenario? It may be for the people of Doumori Elementary...especially with a dirty problem that won't come clean!
#55: Youkai Akaname

Kyouko: (singing) I am a cute girl…

Kyouko: (singing) My chest is still quite small, but it will become big eventually~~even so, Kyouko is still 11 years old…
SFX: Karakara

Kyouko: Kyaaaaaa---!

Kyouko: Mo—th—er!
SFX: Dota dota dota
Kyouko: Come here a moment; the bath is pitch black---¡
SFX: Picha picha
Mrs. Inaba: Eeh!? I just washed it earlier…
SFX: Zuru zuru zuru
Kyouko: so then—I looked closely and it was filth, filth! It was stuck with a limescale like it had been used once in ten years.
Miki: That’s surprising; that’s the bath in my house too.
Katsuya: Did the drainage break down or something?
Makoto: That’s my home too.
90.
Kyouko: How about your house, Hiroshi?
Hiroshi: Ah—me, I haven’t taken a bath in ten days! (Hahaha)
Kyouko: At any rate, we won’t be taking baths today either at this rate.
Miki: No—o, a maiden’s body gets dirty easily—
Katsuya: That’s—it! How about we all go to the bathhouse after school—huh!? It’s a house near our place…it’s old and worn-out but
Kyouko: Really? Let’s go, let’s go!
Miki: At this occasion, I don’t care that it’s worn-out if I can take a bath.
Narrator: Thus, after school, everyone came to go to the bathhouse.
Hiroshi: I…I’m fine, I’m troublesome.
Kyouko: Shut up, don’t complain!!
Miki: Uwa—it’s amazingly—crowded.

Katsuya: Huh, Akira, you came too?
Akira: Yeah, our bath broke down too.
Hiroshi: Is this happening throughout town?
Katsuya: Shuichi too!
Shuichi: Fu, we came to not use the big marble bath at our mansion.
Hiroshi: He’s a gaudy guy as ever.
Kaneda: I’m here too—
Henchman: Bo—ss
(TN: Kaneda’s henchman refers to him as “oyabin”, which is a slang/alternate version of “oyabun” or “boss”. While I do use the “oyabin” term in ‘Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo’ as is [yeah, Hatenko…], it really isn’t significant enough to keep in Japanese here since we really don’t see Kaneda’s buddies too often)
Hiroshi: Seeing as is, mostly all of the class came.
Kyouko: It would be great if we invited Nube too.
Miki: That’s—right—it’s because that man is a guy who doesn’t know when to take a bath—
(TN: Um…Miki…last time Nube tried to take a bath…it was filled with icebergs…never mind)
Nube: Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan
Nube: I can smell them…numberless youkai are floating here…
SFX: Nu~~ | Pu—n pu—n
Kyouko & Miki: Gyaaaa
92.
Kyouko: What are you doing, Nube!
Hiroshi: You can’t go living in a sewer because of how poor you are.
Nube: Hey hey hey hey.
Worker: Is here their departure point of the youki?
Hiroshi: Huh?
SFX: Zoro zoro zoro
Kyouko: Health-care workers…
(TN: The “Health-care workers” here is tied to the word “hokensho”, which is a clinic not for doctors and personal health but for matters of public health matters…such as the dirty baths)
Nube: Dirt regurgitated from drains yesterday and messed up baths throughout town. I was asked for their investigation.
Miki: So, is this the act of a youkai?
Nube: No, this is the act of a water god or ground spirit. Here, when houses were built, a Shinto priest is called and they hold a ground-breaking ceremony. There are gods even in the ground and we have to be humble to them or the plots of houses and environs will have a curse cast on them.
(TN: There are two words Nube mentions here which I ended up having difficulty translating:
-The first, “ground spirit”, is “jirei”, which is specifically “a spirit that resides in the ground” akin to one Nube mentioned that one must be humble to
-The other “suijin”, literally means “water god”, but it seemed like Nube mentioned it as the literal “suijin”, but it could be emphasized as both the “water gods and ground spirits”. With later context, I just translated it as “water god”)
Worker: Today will be for this area because it’s late…shall we do it again tomorrow?
Kyouko: Teacher, you stink. While you’re here, how about taking a bath?
Nube: Rea—lly, I should do—that.
Kyouko & Miki: We did it--!
Kyouko: We’ll be treated to juice on the way home--!
93.
Nube: Adults are 350 yen? Sorry, can I borrow money?

Nube: Well, see you later.
Kyouko & Miki: Ri—ght.

Bathkeeper: Welcome
Shuichi: Fu, I don’t have change.
Katsuya: Did you know? This here will be taken down next month.
Nube: Huh? Why?
Katsuya: Usually this has few customers. It seems like they can’t remodel it like the other bath-houses. It’s a bath-house left behind by the era.
Katsuya: Even that old lady has been sitting the watch-stand for 50 years. Well—she’s pleased that many customers are coming in on the verge of closing down.
94.
Nube: Strange, that youki is from inside…
Katsuya: Let’s go—
SFX: Gara gara…
Hiroshi: Oh—it’s wide as expected—
Nube: …………
SFX: Kako—n…|Zaza—
Hiroshi: Nube, don’t you take off your glove when you take a bath?
Hiroshi: By the way, Katsuya, do you naturally have a secret intention from suggesting “let’s go to the bath-house—“?
Katsuya: Fufufu, of course!
Katsuya: Here, here! From this crack in the stone bath is the women’s bath…
Hiroshi: Oooh.
Nube: Hey hey hey—
Nube: ah—Ritsuko-sensei came---!? Ara, Kyouko-chan, Miki-chan.
SFX: Bita
95.
Katsuya: Nube. (A person like you is…)
Nube: Shut up, this isn’t a thing to be seen by children.
Hiroshi: And it’s fine—to see it if you’re an adult~~
Nube: S**t~~from this angle, I can only see an old woman…away, old woman; s**t~~
Ritsuko: So—then, the bath in my house became pitch black.
SFX: Za—
Kyouko: Eh—your house too, Ritsuko-sensei!?
Miki: Hey, this really may be some curse—
96.
SFX: Za-- | Gokun
Kyouko: That Ritsuko-sensei really is an adult. Look at that huge chest…
Miki: Really?
Kyouko: Hikku hikku, waa~~h, at any~rate, mine are…
Miki: Hey there—there’s nothing to cry about.
Ritsuko: Ri—ght, Kyouko-chan can still become plump and chubby pudding like me from here.
(TN: The expression used here regarding “plump and chubby pudding” is in Japanese “muchimuchi purin”, with “muchimuchi”, which is onomatopoeia for “chubbiness” or “plumpness” and pudding being of course “purin”. It’s obvious what she’s probably talking about)
Kyouko: Really?
Miki: Isn’t that impo—ssible. Even your mom is squashed-flat—
Kyouko: Bl…blame the eggs to be plump and chubby pudding~~(unknown meaning)
(TN: The expression that Kyouko [well someone] says here is “muchimuchi purin tamago seme”, which essentially has this meaning but is another weird expression stemming from Higashi Eguchi’s WSJ series “Susume! Pirates”…of course I probably screwed it up too)
Nube: Haa haa
Caption: Completely forgot about the aura.
Boys: I don’t want to be like that…
Ritsuko: Ara, I forgot my shampoo.
Ritsuko: Did someone bring it?
Kyouko: Eh? Ara, no, I did too.
Miki: I forgot too.

Nube: Why are they polluting the baths throughout town? I’ll read their heart.
SFX: Pou
Nube: What is this…they knew this bath-house is closing shop; therefore, they thought if they could make many customers, they could prevent the closing…madam, they seem like allies to your bath-house.

Bathkeepr: What is this: souls are dwelling in these things, but I scraped the filth of the bathtubs in the baths for decades with these tawashi.
Bathkeeper: But I’m already old and I’m going to close down this shop. Thank you for calling these customers at the end.
Nube: After the shop closes down, please hold a memorial service at a shrine for them.
105.
Nube: Just like them, things used for many years and things that easily dwell spirits have memorial services held at temples and shrines. Because of a degree of putting them in a personally-used box and a fee as you feel (however much is fine), it’s best that you use this.
Nube: Fu—I’m completely chilly.

Possessor of a D-cup bust though she’s a grade-schooler. The troublemaker of Doumori Elementary. A beautiful girl who deceives and laughs and yet…this freewheeling way of living won the direction of girl readers, putting her in 4th.

-She loves rumoring with gossip.
-IS SHE REALLY A GRADE SCHOOLER!?
TN: Before you start chewing me out, yes this is the equivalent of what is known as the "bath-house" chapter of a manga. The whole purpose of the chapter: Japanese culture combined with T&A for the most part. (yeah you don't see the graphic stuff but it's still there) And while I know many are probably squirming that this chapter took delight in depicting minors in various stages of undress, it was all for the most part done respectfully and in character (yeah, remember that Kyouko has a habit of singing in the bathroom...even undressing I guess)...and we get a naked Ritsuko-sensei for those who aren't looking for naked grade schoolers. Now for those of you not reading this chapter for...that...it was an interesting concept regarding changing times and the loss of the old ways in the fact of the future. The fact that youkai formed from scrub-brushes tried to please their master before their bath-house was torn down was a reminder of the constant nature of change and consistency in a nation like Japan, where the old is always forced to fight with the new and neither seems to ever have any victory, though the new seems to always come out in the end. But...I think we were all for the most part reading it for the obvious reasons so I think I should shut up now.
