In deals with the supernatural, the innocent does get harmed...but the guilty always pays a price. Such is seen when Nube, Hiroshi and Miki encounter two mysterious people and a squad of strange priests on a dark and stormy night...

#73: The Seven Misaki

91.
SFX: Pika | Gara gara gara
Nube: Oh boy…it’s become a severe storm. I’m sorry that the two of you in the beautification committee were left here for odd jobs.
Hiroshi: It would be fine if you called our homes.
Miki: Yuck—we’re repairing these broken fixtures…

92.
Miki: Fu fu fu: but today that intruder Kyouko isn’t here…I slowly can have a shot at Hiroshi. This sort of chance is important.
SFX: Suri suri (rub rub)
Miki: If Hiroshi and I are connected by thing…(yes)
SFX: Kugi
Miki: I’ll openly have a boyfriend too! The heroine seat in this manga will be mine!
(TN: Kan ton ton kan)
Miki: --Well hey, wait, Hiroshi—what is this behavior, hey!! (Garuru…)
Sign: Danger! Mating Season
(TN: The second word on the cage is actually “Hatsujouki”, which is literally “The Mating Season”. Obviously with Miki’s typical behavior, I figured “in heat” worked as well but the former applies with the next line)
Hiroshi: The breeding pen is fixed.
Nube: N? That, wasn’t it a shoe rack?
SFX: Gikiki
Nube: Huh?
Hiroshi: A car.
Hiroshi: They’re together and coming here.
SFX: Batan

93.
SFX: Za—za—
Nube: Hey, what’s your intention? This here isn’t a love hotel.
“Woman”: We know that.
Miki: This person will be brutal if seen together with you.
“Man”: We’re being chased. Isn’t there the police…no, a monk or priest here!?
(TN: The “monk or priest” part is in reference to the two religions and aren’t the same in this case. “Monk” refers to “bou-san”, a Buddhist Monk/Priest, while “priest” is “Kannushi”, a Shinto Priest)
Nube: Eh?
SFX: Oh—oh—
“Woman”: …They’re coming.
“Man”: What’s that!?
Nube: ……
Voices: Haven’t you strayed? We’ve come to meet you.
SFX: Za—za—za—za—

94.-95.
“Priests”: Haven’t you strayed…we’ve come to meet you…haven’t you strayed…we’ve come to meet you…
SFX: Za—za—za—

96.
“Priest”: Haven’t you straaayed!!
SFX: Ka
Miki: They’re peeping into the car.
“Man”: They’re searching for us.
Nube: It’s the seven…
Hiroshi: Eh? There’s only five.
Nube: The Seven Misaki. They take in troubled people…

97.
Nube: The Seven Misaki.
Nube: The souls of people that have done evil deeds become a seven-man group and are bound by their mutually strong grudge, coming to not be able to rest in peace. The Seven Misaki must absolutely be seven people. If they lack even one, then they kill people and draw them in so they can get their head count in order.
“Man”: What: this teacher is an otaku on spiritual powers?
Miki: That’s—right: that’s why he’s become 25 and doesn’t even have a woman—(Kekeke…)
Nube: The Seven Misaki outside are only five.
Hiroshi: So, will they kill two people and draw them in?
Hiroshi: Bu…but, how could the seven become five people?
Nube: They’re resting in peace. If they themselves are done in by a stranger who has done similar evil deeds that were committed during their lives, then even the Seven Misaki, who can never rest in peace, can rest in peace.

98.
Nube: You two, didn’t you do something to them?
“Man”: We…we just discovered them unexpectedly on a mountain road! They’ve come to attack us on their own!
“Woman”: Ri…right: quickly exterminate them without boasting of your wares!
Nube: …Alright, understood: all of you hide in the night-watch room. I’ll be getting my exorcism gods in the staff office.
Hiroshi: Please be as fast as possible.
Nube: They’re intertwined by a mutual grudge and have become youkai with an extremely strong power. I can’t use ordinary methods…
Nube: ………
SFX: Kara…
Sign: Staff Office

99.
SFX: Gara!
Misaki: Haven’t you strayed!!
Nube: Th…they got into the school unawaringly.
SFX: Za za za
Misaki: We’ve come to meet you!!
Nube: The Oni no Te…
SFX: Sa
SFX: Baki
Nub: Gu!

SFX: Doka zuka baki boki
Nube: Guaaa!!
Voice: …He’s late.
Sign: Night Watch Room
“Man”: That teacher. Didn’t he run off—
Hiroshi: What! Nube isn’t such a man!
Miki: He does step into blunders but
“Man”: S**t…what’s going to happen…
SFX: Gara…
Misaki: Haven’t you strayed!! We’ve come to meet you!!
SFX: Za za za za
Everyone: Uwaa!!

101.
Miki: They’ve already come up to this floor!
Hiroshi: And Nube!? Has he been defeated!?
Misaki: Haven’t you strayed~~we’ve come to meet you~~
Miki: They’re peeping into the classrooms one by one and investigating…
Miki: I can’t die in this place—There is TV I wanted to see tonight and yet—(No no)
Hiroshi: Calm down! Nube will certainly save us.
Miki: Since I detest having regrets, I’ll watch it now.
Hiroshi: Is this the situation to do that?
TV: --The two-man couple, who have murdered 4 people and stolen 500 million yen, are now on the run—
Miki: N?
Miki: Eh…Eeh~~!?
TV Captions:
Enjouji Yurie (34) | Kanamori Keiichirou (30)

102.
Keiichirou: …Do you see!?
Keiichirou: Of course: We’re the robbing murderers. If this was as planned, we should have fled to a foreign country now.
Keiichirou: In the midst of stealing that money and running, they appeared…
Keiichirou & Yurie: !!
SFX: Gikii! | Don
Yurie: What have you done, clumsy! You struck two people…!
SFX: Gacha

103.
Yurie: What will we do? They seem like they’re still alive…
Keiichirou: What will we do…we’re being pursued by the police.
Keiichirou: We were afraid that they would be alive and give a tip to the police…we ran them over once more to make sure…
Keiichirou & Yurie: !!
SFX: Shuuu
Keiichirou: We though they momentarily grinning and laughing and, as it was, they disappeared.
Yurie: If it’s as that teacher said, then the disappearing duo had a crime of a hit-and-run accident as well…therefore, they are resting in peace since we had done the same thing. However, thanks to them, they’ve decreased by two…and we’ve come to be gotten into being chased by the remaining five.
Keiichirou: The point is isn’t it best that they uniform their head count? For those remaining two…
SFX: Suru
Keiichirou: If two are killed, then they’ll be satisfied…
Hiroshi: You can’t be…

104.
Yurie: You two that are head-over-heels in this will be the replacements.
Keiichirou: You’ll be the sacrifices and we’ll be saved.
Hiroshi & Miki: Uwa—stop—
Keiichirou: That’s fine. The rest is for you to be cooked by the monsters.
Miki: Hiee!!
Hiroshi: Scoundrels—
Hiroshi: !!
Miki: Nooo, save us~~

105.
Nube: Namu!!
SFX: Doka
Miki: Nube!!
Nube: Sorry, I was late…on top of that, they damaged even the Oni-left hand…
Keiichirou: You’re late in coming now.
Yurie: At best do your best.
Nube: I heard your story…you two, and even so you’re humans…
Nube: Even if I can’t use my Oni no Te, you won’t lay a finger on my students!!

106.
Nube: Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan Koudai Reikan Byakue Kanzeon To—Ji—To—On Kara Hatta Kara Hatta Kako Hatta Raka Hatta Raka Hatta Sowaka…
Caption: He’s excessively chanting more than usual.
SFX: Kiiiii
Nube: No…they’re grudge is too strong and can’t be defeated by this level of sutra! (Haa…haa…)
Misaki: Ooooooooh
Keiichirou: Ke, it was a bluff after all. Nothing you can do in watching that forever for a bit.
Yurie: Right: and now we’ll escape from the window.
Keiichirou: Farewell, spiritually-powered teacher. We were saved thanks to you.
Nube: Ku…

107.
Miki: You can only use the Oni no Te after all…
Hiroshi: It’s impossible: that injured hand…
Misaki: Oooooooooh
Yurie: At best do your best. Ufufu…
SFX: Goro goro
Keiichirou & Yurie: Hahahahahaha…
SFX: Gaka
Keiichirou & Yurie: Gyaaaa!!

108.
Miki: ?
SFX: Za za za za
SFX: Mukuri

109.
Nube: They were drawn into the Seven Misaki…those two will continue to wander for eternity without ever resting in peace. They can’t be rescued by me anymore.
Narrator: The Seven Misaki: long ago, seven villainous mountain priests killed villagers. They were cursed by this and became evil spirits; they became the first to hold this curse. This legend has gone around to everywhere.
SFX: Shan…shan shan shan

RETURN OF THE GREAT YOUKAI ENCYCLOPEDIA

#11: The Seven Misaki

“Misaki” originally was a word with a meaning of “herald” or “harbinger” and is assigned as “omen” when said in English. It is a small spiritual phenomenon that appears as a forerunner to some large catastrophe or event.

For example, when you’re walking on a road at night, you’re suddenly attacked by an indescribable terror and have a feeling of chills. At this time, you say “there is an ominous wind”. An omen has appeared that has changed the form of the wind. A Misaki itself is a small spirit, but since it takes along with it a large curse for certain afterwards, it has been terribly feared since long ago.

Well then, a being that has become a seven-man group of omens is the “Seven Misaki”. The Seven Misaki in the form of mountain priests introduced in this volume is modeled by a thing that appears in Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture, but, aside from that, there is a record of an eyewitness of monk-formed Seven Misaki in Tokuyama City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. People who see the Seven Misaki are said to certainly die. Since again they particularly aim for and sweep away women and children, people greatly fear them and don’t go out at nighttime too much. A method to live without meeting the Seven Misaki is to walk while holding your thumb in the palm of your hand, but we’re not definite with its effect. Outside not seeming to go outside late at night as much as possible, there isn’t a way to escape from this at present.
(TN: A few things:
1. The general idea of the first part is that “Misaki” in English is “Omen”. The “herald” and “harbinger” part was both two separate Japanese words: “yochou”, which I translated as “herald” and “maebure”, which is “harbinger” here.
2. There were a few points where “misaki” and “omen” ended up being interchangeable, in particular the concept here of “misaki kaze”, which I translated here as “ominous wind”. Outside the “Seven Misaki”, I ended up using “misaki” part the concept of it as a spirit, while the rest I translated as “omen”
3. “Mihara” is a city in the south-eastern coast in Hiroshima Prefecture, while “Tokuyama” is now a “former city” near the southern tip of Honshu that is now part of the city of Shuunan.)

TN: I think we've probably met two of the most deserving to die monsters that we've ever seen in this series in the form of Yurie and Keiichirou. Sure there have been many others who have obviously peeved off the supernatural (see that idiot back with the Teketeke incident pulled on Makoto...or the jerk priest who sold Kyouko the evil Shugorei), but those two in this chapter just utterly deserved everything they got in being captured for eternal torment by the Misaki. In fact, the whole chapter, both in the action of the criminal duo and the Misaki literally overwhelming and nearly defeating Nube, combined with the whole "dark and stormy" mood of the chapter, just ended up making this one of the more dramatic, scary and downright freaky chapters we've had in a long while. Though...you do have to admit that Miki probably deserved to be in a mating pen with what she tried to pull at the start...
