How far will someone who is special go to prove they're "normal"? When an extraordinary girl tries to act more "ordinary", she may have placed herself under a curse she can't stop...especially with who she doesn't want to know about it!

#76: Dodomeki

153.
SFX: Uuuh…uuuuh…
Sign: Girl’s Lavatory
“Glasses Girl”: Uuh…

154.
SFX: Gyoro gyoro

155.
SFX: Buchi!
“Glasses Girl”: Kyaaaaaaa!

156.
Miki: As we expected of her: the most talented female of Doumori Elementary: Class 6-5’s Shinozaki Ai-san.
Kyouko: As the daughter of the Shinozaki Zaibatsu, she has undertaken special gifted education since she was young and is fluent in three foreign languages. She surely is a super-miss.
(TN: A couple notes:
-A “Zaibatsu” is a term for an industrial financial or business conglomerate whose influence and size controlled massive sectors of the Japanese economy. While a massive influence on Japan from 1868 to 1945, the industries do still have some influence in Japan even after much of their power was reduced after WWII.
-It was really hard to find an appropriate English term for “chou-ojousama”, with “ojousama” being a term for respect for a daughter or a young female, but somehow “super-miss” worked with the “chou” addition at the start)
Kyouko: In particular, she’s a champion at the all-nationals contest on the violin. Those who listen to her can’t go without lending an ear…
SFX: Gusu (sniff)~~
Makoto: Guaaa~~~
Kyouko: Makoto---! What are you doing—
SFX: Doba
Makoto: Kyaa

157.
Ai: Its fine: it’s because Makoto-kun is my friend.
(TN: You’d probably find it weird that a genius like Ai would be friends with Makoto, but there is a weird reason behind this connection: the duo are based on the lead characters from the 1973-1976 Shonen Magazine series actually called “Ai and Makoto” written by Kajiwara Ikki and drawn by Nakayasu Takumi, which was subsequently made into a trilogy of movies and a TV drama)
Makoto: That’s right: last week I took to her a flute that she forgot in the music room and she became my friend.
Miki: His friend is the talented girl.
Kyouko: It’s hard to be her acquaintance.
Makoto: That piece now made me sleep with boredom. I want you to play “Choukiken Sentai Kakukakuranger”. (here, the score)
(TN: There is actually no such show as “Choukiken Sentai Kakukakuranger” (literal translation: “Super-Dangerous Sentai Nuclearangers”)…but it is actually a parody of a sentai series name! The major “Super-Sentai” series (the live-action tokusatsu shows whose battle footage is used for the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” franchise) of the period of 1994-1995 was “Ninja Sentai Kakuranger” [which mostly just speaks for itself but with the “kaku” here tied to the word “kakusu”, which is “secret” or “hidden” in Japanese, thus they would be the “Hiddenrangers” in English]; the manga merely adds a “kaku”, changing it to “Kakukakuranger” (thus the “nuclear” theme instead of the “ninja” theme) This won’t be the only time we get a parody of the Super-Sentai series of this period in this manga…but for some reason Kakukakuranger ends up being Makoto’s favorite since we get to see it quite often from here on. BTW: the footage from Kakuranger was used in the 3rd Power Rangers series…mostly the Zord footage but the actual Rangers were the infamous “Alien Rangers” of the series.)
Book: Kakukakuranger Score
Kyouko: That brat! Is that even art!
(TN: If you’re a sentai fan it is)
Ai: Can all of you quiet down? I don’t mind you listening but
Kyouko: Right.
Makoto: From where do you come from, Kakukakuranger. Their dangerous guys. Nuclear. Kiken Sentai Kakukakuranger.
Miki: Is this sort of thing out of taste?
Kyouko: Yeesh, their breeding is different after all.

158.
Ai: Uh!
SFX: Zuki!
Makoto: What’s wrong: is there athlete’s foot on your hand?
Ai: Ye…yes. Actually…right, Makoto-kun, you’re in Nube-sensei’s class.
Sign: Infirmary
Nube: !!
SFX: Gyoro Gyoro
Nube: It’s Dodomeki.
(TN: “Dodomeki” literally translates into “the demon of hundreds of eyes”)
Ai: Dodomeki?

159.
Ai: I ask you, please heal me! I hit it and hit it and it appears and it hurts…!
Nube: ………………
Nube: Hmm, I’ll heal it immediately. It’s just there’s come to be one thing before that but…this Dodomeki is only a human who has done a certain specific action.
Nube: First, you have to tell me how this occurred from when and what you’ve done.
Nube: What’s the matter, tell me. It’s necessary for exorcising this. If you don’t tell me, then I can’t exorcise this.
Ai: ………

160.
Ai: N…no. I forgot when this occurred.
SFX: Ki—n ko—n ka—n ko—n…
Voices: Bye-by—e. See you again.
Student 1: Ah, Shinozaki-san. Go….good-bye.
Student 2: Goodbye.
Ai: Goodbye.
Student 1: Wa—let’s play—dodgeball—
Student 2: Kya—join us, join us—

161.
SFX: Gasha gasha
Right Box: Milk
Center Box: Cloud Mark
Makoto: It works well: this blue Zvatt that I made in arts period.
(TN: The “blue Zvatt” outfit Makoto is talking about is actually in reference to Tokusatsu hero “Kaiketsu Zubat” (Swift Hero Zvatt), a hero created by Shotaro Ishimori in 1977 that actually refers back to 1950s tokusatsu heroes [heroes who usually just switched between a civilian form and a special “superhero costume” they put on as opposed to any special or spectacular transformation…though the civilian form of Zvatt was more like a cowboy] if made in the 70s. The actual costume of Zvatt was red in color with a black visor, as opposed to what I assume is Makoto’s “blue” version)
SFX: Kapo
Ai: Ma…Makoto, are you going home in that appearance? (It’s…Yakult--)
(TN: “Yakult” is a probiotic milk drink made by fermenting skim milk with a special “lactobacillus casei Shirota” bacteria to assist with health)
Makoto: Obviously. It’s cool.
Makoto: By the way: can I ask you about my math homework?
Ai: Yes, it’s fine. We are friends.
Makoto: Nube’s doing an exorcism on you? What’s the spirit?
Ai: Ye…yes. It seems it’s called Dodomeki, but it seems like the exorcism is difficult.
Makoto: He’s a teacher you can’t rely on.

162.
Makoto: Leave it to me! I’ll give you an exorcism!
SFX: Da!
Ai: Makoto-kun!
Makoto: We’re friends…fufu…he’s a weird kid. Speaking cheerfully like that to me…
Sign: Library
Voice: Dodomeki!?
Makoto: Look up what sort of youkai it is!
Miki: Enough~~what a bother—
Book: Youkai Encyclopedia
(TN: With a Nube ad on the back?)
Miki: Here it is! Dodomeki: long ago, there was a pickpocket woman. One day, when taking a purse, an eye started to appear on her hand. Every time she stole, the eyes would increase; in the end, she became just eyes throughout her body and she became a youkai.
Miki: Understood: it seems like a youkai who is attached to bad people, like thieves and pickpockets.

163.
Makoto: Ho…how…how could that youkai have Ai-chan…
Sign: Convenience (Opened Every Day of the Year) 24
SFX: Su…

164.
SFX: Sa
Ai: !
SFX: Butsu butsu butsu | Tsu—
SFX: Gyoro
Ai: Kyaaaa!!
Ai: It can’t be: it’s on the left hand too…it’s the same. The source from with the right hand too was…

165.
Sign: Shinozaki
Ai: My shoplifting was the source after all. I…I’ve been called the madam and talented girl by everyone and hated that special treatment…
Ai: And on that day, when I shoplifted just once…I had done a bad thing. I had a feeling that was of a normal person and became addicted to it from that…
SFX: Zowa
Ai: !
SFX: Butsu butsu butsu
Ai: Kyaaaa

166.
Caption: The next morning
Ai: Uuuh. Every time I walk, there’s the pain of my outfit rubbing the eyeballs…someone save me…
Makoto: Ai-cha—n!
Makoto: I investigated Dodomeki. It’s spiritual harm that occurs on bad people. Therefore there’s no reason it could happen to Ai-chan. You made some mistake…(Hahaha)
Makoto: Ah, where are you going?
SFX: Da!
Ai: Teacher! Teacher!!
Nube: What is it, has it worsened too much!?
Nube: At any rate, please show me.
Sign: Infirmary

167.
SFX: Gyoro gyoro gyoro gyoro
Nube: This is severe…with this at any rate, it will control to your brain and you’ll become a complete youkai.
Ai: I beg you: Please destroy them one-by-one with the Oni no Te!
Nube: That’s unreasonable. There would be wounds remaining on your body…however, you should try telling me its source.

168.
SFX: Don don don
Makoto: Ai-chan! What’s wrong with you? You ran away immediately. You couldn’t have done a bad thing or anything, have you!?
Ai: Don’t come, Makoto-kun!!
SFX: Don don
Makoto: You’ve made some mistake in having Dodomeki.
Ai: Save me, teacher. Makoto-kun is my only friend. I don’t want him to see this ugly body!
Ai: Please…Nube-sensei.
Nube: So then…tell me. The reason you’ve come to be this way…

169.
Ai: If I tell the truth…I’m certain Makoto-kun will come to hate me…This is spiritual harm that occurs on people that do bad things…
SFX: Bu bu
Ai: Uuuh…
Ai: I confess: I…am a habitual shoplifter…it’s due to that…that I’ve become this form…!
Makoto: Ai-cha—n!!
SFX: Baki—n!
Ai: !!

170.
Ai: Dodomeki disappeared.
Nube: It is a youkai who attaches to the guilty feelings that are hiding in a person who has done bad things.
Nube: It has a hunch in seeing someone somewhere doing a crime. These feelings appear by becoming eyes. If you confess the truth, it disappears.

171.
Nube: Your shoplifting won’t be known by your parents. The rest is to get fully preached in the student guidance office.
Makoto: What: those eyes were nowhere.
Caption: Feels nothing even if he sees a naked girl
Ai: Ye…yes…
Ai: I...have a feeling that I was called the talented girl by everyone and had to make a wall for myself. I’ll become a girl who is much easier in getting close to everyone. Cooperate with me on that.
Makoto: ?
Ai & Makoto: From where do you come from, Kakukakuranger—Their dangerous guys. Nuclear…

TN: A little post-script music if you please...

(yeah, it isn't "Kakukakuranger", but it is the inspiration for it and it's a cool song)

This chapter, aside from being the second Makoto-based chapter in the volume (and the one that probably introduces how geeky and child-like the kid is), introduces a neat minor character that is rather intertwined with him through the 6th Grader Ai. Somehow with how we've seen 6th graders in a negative light the only other time we've had them (way back in chp. 1 when Hiroshi fought them while possessed by a youkai), having one like her, who was both wiser than her age suggests and just seems much more reserved even with her genius, just felt like a nice change of pace from what we had from before. Of course, the storyline of the chapter just ended using that as part of the problems that she had, with her obsession to be "normal" yet still separate via her "genius" ending up leading to her stealing...and her possession by the Dodomeki. Somehow seeing her "decay" with the eyes all over her as well as in...well, weirdly perverted yet still innocent attire, just showed both the freakiness of her scenario...and the pure Okano sexiness that just keeps showing up in this series. Nube's role was mostly as mentor as opposed to problem solver: he knew that Ai was doing wrong and just tried to make her confess, but her reserved nature prevented her from doing so until it was nearly too late. Though...somehow you do sort of wish that we get a bit more with her...and with her with Makoto...but...well, I guess that's the problem with being a 6th-grader: you're not a 5th grader and you don't have easy access to Nube. (though we do meet a couple other later on...they're not as important as Ai but one or two of them do have interesting aspects...)
