Feeling of Vegas? Dark-Gambling Death Dice!!
-> RTS Page for Shintetsu Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo 45
Bo-bobo and Hanpen (And Gaou...I think) has been sent out in a Sangaria against a devious gambling princess who determines the match by a roll of the dice! Can they bet it all to defeat this high-rolling IXEX maiden?
Shinsetsu 45: Feeling of Vegas? Dark-Gambling Death Dice!!
43.
Beauty: Dengaku Cantabile.........
(TN: "Dengaku Cantabile" is in reference to the popular music-based shoujo series "Nodame Cantabile" by Tomoko Ninomiya, running in Kodansha magazine Kiss between 2001 to 2009. The series involves a girl who, through encounters and a love of a guy, grows to appreciate the music that she plays)
44.
Chinchiro-Hime: KING OF JAPANESE-MADE GAMBLING: "CHINCHIRO"...IT'S TERROR WILL BE TAUGHT TO YOU IN THIS SANGARIA.
Tennosuke: GREAT---MISS. STIR IT UP--
Sake Bottles: (right to left) NU-OU (Nu-King); NU-HA (Nu-Wave); TENKA NUSOU (parody of "Tenka Musou", "Unequalled Under the Heaven"...thus this would be "Equal to Nu under the heaven")
Beauty: Since he understood he himself isn't fighting, he became a tender-hearted stranger...
Pokomi: HEY, WH--AT IS CHINCHIRO?
Don Patch: You don't know? Fine: Chinchiro is, well...
45.
Don Patch: It's this.
"Chin": CHIN FLICKS. CHIN FLICKS.
Caption: Chin
(TN: It's been a while since we've had a pun this great but basically it's this: while it's obvious this guy's name is "chin", what he is doing is "chirochiro", which is "flickering" in Japanese. Thus, Chin is "chiro"-ing, leading to "Chinchiro")
Beauty: YOU'RE COMPLETELY WRONG!!!!
Hatenko: "Chinchiro" is simple gambling where you win with the number of protruding dots on the dice that are rolled are odd or even, as one kind of dice gambling. (Oyabin)
Captions: ODD NUMBER -> HAN; EVEN NUMBER -> CHOU
(TN: Now that it's finally explained a bit, it's time that I actually explain it a bit better: while it will be called "Chinchiro" in this series, the actual name of the game is "Chinchirorin" and is also known as "Cee-lo". The game is essentially a variation of the game of craps, only with three dice instead of just two and is based on the concept mostly of "Odds and Evens". For the most part, the gamblers bet on whether the three dice will come up as "Odd" (known as "Han" in Japanese) or "Even" ("Chou"), as well as certain combinations that can make or break a game: a 4-5-6 roll allows for everyone at the table who bet to win, while a 1-2-3 is a win for the bank. Due to the direct translation and so we won't get confused, I will be keeping "Han" and "Chou" as "Odd" and "Even" in this script)
Pig: NOW, TELL ME, TELL ME-BU
Don Patch: !!!
Beauty: As expected, Hatenko-san.
Don Patch: AAH, CHIN! WAIT UP, CHIN!
Chinchiro-Hime: NOW, LET'S COMPETE FOR OUR LIVES TOGETHER.
Bo-bobo: EXCELLENT: THIS DARK-GAMBLING MATCH...
Bo-bobo: SHALL BE TAKEN FROM THE FRONT!!!
Caption: 15:50 (3:50 PM): RIOT POLICE BREAK IN
Shield: POLICE HQ
Beauty: YOU LIE----!! YOU'RE FULLY READY TO EXPOSE THIS AS ILLEGAL GAMBLING----!!
46.
Bo-bobo: HERE WE GO
Bo-bobo: SHINSETSU HANAGE SHINKEN OUGI: 24-HOUR POLICE SEIGE-NETWORK! SIMULTANEOUS CONTROL!!!
Voices: GYOHEEEE
Beauty: KYAAA, SOMETHING IS HAPPENING WITHIN THERE---!!?
Beauty: Ah...the mosaic is getting unstuck...
Bo-bobo: SHINSETSU HANAGE SHINKEN CHOUOUGI: LUFFA CULTIVATION DIARY!!!
(TN: The "sponge gourd", or "luffa" is genus "Luffa", a genus that is typically used as a coarse sponge in the west but used as a vegetable in the Middle East, Asia and Africa)
Beauty: THAT'S---WHAT IT IS!!? THAT CALM MOOD WITHIN THE MOSAIC!!?
Bo-bobo: WHAT IS THE APPLICATION METHOD OF A LUFFA!!!
Angel 777: GABARA!!!
Hanpen: WHAT IS THE APPLICATION METHOD OF A LU---FFA!!!
Angel 777: GYAHA--IT'S WETTING MY EYES~~~
47.
Bo-bobo: FOR YOU IS SHINSETSU HANAGE SHINKEN CHOUOUGI: PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF THE IN-VOGUE BALANCE-BALL----!!!
Pachidama: GYAAAAAAA, I'M A BALL FOR TEMPERING THE BODY-----THIS HURTS-----!!!
Chinchiro-Hime: ALL OF YOU STEADY YOURSELVES
Chinchiro-Hime: A PAIR OF (1)
Chinchiro-Hime: ALRIGHT, I'LL DO THAT!
Chinchiro-Hime: SAIKORO BAKUCHI SHINKEN CHOUOUGI: SHINIGAMI KING OF GAMBLING: MAPHINE!!!! I'VE GOT THIS MATCH
(TN: A few notes:
-I ended up making the name of the attack character "Maphine" as a weird fusion of "Ma" or "Demon" and the ending of "Morphine".
-I ended up keeping the creature as "Shinigami" [which is a typical Japanese embodiment of "death"] as opposed to "Death God" because...well, you'll see why next page
-The summoning means of Maphine isn't ironic at all: two 1s, the combo also known as "snake eyes", is considered bad luck in many cultures and ends up being a losing roll in craps)
48.
Bo-bobo: WHAT IS THAT!?
Hanpen: A KIND OF SHINIGAMI!?
Tennosuke: PERHAPS WITH A SHINIGAMI...SHE IS KIRA.
"Cup": Coffee Cup
Beauty: EEH!?
Don Patch: You dummy...L-nosuke. I am Kira! I am God.
"Creature": Orange
Book: SCRIBBLE NOTE
Tennosuke: NOW TELL ME, AMANE PATCHMI, YOU ARE KIRA.
Don Patch: STOP THIS---IT'S TORTURE---YOU'RE A PERVERT, PERVERT---
Beauty: Well, what are you two doing...
(TN: I had to essentially keep quiet the whole time to let the whole scenario play out but, once again, Sawai is referring to Ohba/Obata's "Death Note"...but this time, is actually following along with some previous work Sawai himself did! Back when DN was still running as a manga, Sawai was notable for making a "one-shot" that essentially replaced the characters of the series with Bo-bobo characters. Most notable were using Don Patch as Light Yagami/Kira and Tennosuke/L, but Bo-bobo ended up playing Ryuk...which he isn't in this version sadly. However, this version ends up adding in the infamous "second Kira" Misa Amane, who this version is being played by...yeah, Patchmi. In fact, the whole scene with Tennosuke's "capture/torture" of Patchmi was in Death Note, right down to Misa calling L a pervert for the unconventional method of capture he does to her in order to try and prove certain things about the Kira murders)
Chinchiro-Hime: UFUFUFU...ON TOP OF THE APPEARANCE OF "MAPHINE", YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM MY GAMBLING ANYMORE.
Bo-bobo: WHAT?
Chinchiro-Hime: THE THREE JET-BLACK DICE TOGETHER IN THE SKY WILL DECIDE OUR DESTINES FROM HERE ON...
49.
Chinchiro-Hime: WE'LL START THE BATTLE GAMBLE "DEATH DICE"!!!
Hanpen: WHAT!? THE CYLINDERS ABOVE US HAVE STARTED TO TURN!!
Chinchiro-Hime: BATTLE GAMBLE START!
Chinchiro-Hime: THE DICE HAVE BEEN THROWN! FROM HERE WE HAVE THE TWO CHOICES OF ODD OR EVEN, JUST LIKE IN CHINCHIRO!! NOW PLEASE PUT UP!!
Hanpen: Nuu...In that case, here we'll decide with my good luck.
Bo-bobo: WAIT! I'LL DECIDE
Hanpen: We can't leave this to you; here will be me!!
Bo-bobo: NO...
50.
Bo-bobo: LEAVE THIS TO MY LUCK, HANPEN.
Hanpen: AH.........AAH...
Caption: Hanpen withdraws.
Bo-bobo: Odd, even, frankly I don't know which is correct. If you're saying this is decided by whichever it is, merely odd or even...
Bo-bobo: HIDEN NINPOU...CHOU!!
(TN: Bo-bobo's "choice" is the name of a rival "collectable sticker series" to the likes of "Bikkuriman" with ninja techniques, only with "Chou" being the same "Chou" as the one for "Even". The actual "Hiden Ninpou Chou" translates into "Secret Ninja Art Notebook")
Beauty: WHAT'S THAT!?
Pachidama: HE'S A ICE-CREAM CANDY GUY
Bo-bobo: UOOOOOOOOO
Bo-bobo: SHINSETSU HANAGE SHINKEN CHOUOUGI: THE GREAT PARADE OF NOSTALGIC STICKERS!!!! THE LEGEND OF KING HARIMA, TIME-SLIP BATTLE, RAMEN-GRANNY, BRAVO GREAT SHOGUN, BATTLE KNIGHT
(TN: All of these are actually the name of various sticker series akin to "Hiden Ninpou Chou" and "Bikkuriman"; a rundown:
-Legend of King Harima (Harima-ou no Densetsu): A collective of various knights, royalty and monsters
-Time-Slip Battle: Creatures and artifacts from throughout the past and future
-Ramen-Granny (Ramenbaa): Not sure but seems to be based on ramen
-Bravo Great Shogun (Appare Daishougun): Japanese warriors and monsters
-Battle Knight: European-styled knights and monsters)
Sticker: MANIN (Evin Ninja) BO-BOBO
Angel 777 & Pachidama: GYAAAAAA, ALL THE TITLES WE'VE HEARD ARE NOSTALGIIC----!!!
51.
Bo-bobo: Ku...these "Death Dice". On top of not knowing the rules, now I can only follow the rules of her.
Chinchiro-Hime: FUFU...EVEN IS FINE. IN THAT CASE, WE'LL TAKE ODD.
Chinchiro-Hime: WELL, THE DICE ARE FALLING. WHICH WILL IT BE, ODD OR EVEN?
52.
Chinchiro-Hime: A 5 and 4.
Chinchiro-Hime: And with this 6, it's an odd 15.
Chinchiro-Hime: I WIN.
Beauty: THAT'S...SHE AIMED FOR THE NUMBER AND CHANGED IT. THAT'S UNFAIR
Tennosuke: FRAUD, IT'S FRAUD---!!
Don Patch: SQUID-SAMA---!!?
"Squid": He--y, I don't want to see the octopus. Step back, step back--
(TN: This was another weird pun: Tennosuke ends up calling Chinchiro-Hime "Ikasama", which is "fraud", but Don Patch interprets "ikasama" as "Ika-sama" or "Squid-sama")
Chinchiro-Hime: THAT'S THE RULE OF DEATH DICE! UNTIL THE DICE HIT THE GROUND, IT'S VALID TO CHANGE THE NUMBER EFFECTIVELY, EVEN BY TOUCHING IT JUST ANY TIME. WE MEET AND KILL BY TURNING THE FACES OF THESE THREE DICE! THAT'S A GAMBLE BATTLE
Bo-bobo: KU...THIS MATCH: WE HAVE FRAUDULENCE AND ANYTHING FROM THE START?
Don Patch: SQUID-SAMA!!?
"Squid": THIS IS PARADISE--
Chinchiro-Hime: YOU HAVE TO PAY UP THE LOSING SHARE FOR THE GAMBLE NOW
Bo-bobo: WHAT?
53.
Chinchiro-Hime: SAIKORO BAKUCHI SHINKEN CHOUOUGI: SOUL BET LAS VEGAS!!!!
(TN: The "other reading" for the attack we're seeing here is "The great game of betting souls" or "The great Number One for betting souls")
Pokomi: WA
Everyone: !!!
54.
Beauty: KYAAAA: POKOMI-CHAN
Hatenko: WHA? SHE BECAME A DIE.
Don Patch: THIS FEELS HIGH-SPIRITED?
Bo-bobo: YOU, WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED TO POKOMI...?
Chinchiro-Hime: MAPHINE IS A SHINIGAMI WHO DISCOVERS ONE SACRIFICE FOR LOSING A GAMBLE, TAKES THEIR SOUL AND CHANGES THEM INTO A DIE. RUNNING AWAY IS UNFORGIVABLE: YOUR ALLIES ARE REPLACEMENT CHIPS! NOW, HAVE FUN IN GAMBLING!
Bo-bobo: YOU
Chinchiro-Hime: NOW, WE'LL START THE SECOND ACT. PLEASE PLACE ON ODD OR EVEN!!
Hanpen: IN THAT CASE, NEXT WILL BE DECIDED BY ME. NEXT IS
Hanpen: TOKUMEI KAKARI...CHOU!!
(TN: Another "Chou"-based pun, Hanpen announced his bet through the title of "Tokumei Kakarichou Tadano Hitoshi" (Hitoshi Tadano, the Extraordinary Undercover Detective), a popular J-drama about a "nobody" businessman by day who becomes a skilled detective by night. Two seasons had already aired by this point, with a third series starting close to the release of this chapter in January, 2007. [the chapter was released around November/December, 2006] and a fourth in 2009)
Beauty: HE DID THAT SERIOUSLY!!
55.
Bo-bobo: HOW DARE YOU LAY A HAND ON MY ALLIES...UNFORGIVABLE!!! YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY LOSE TO ME!!!
Bo-bobo: LET'S GO, HANPEN!! WE'LL SEND THEM FLYING AND PLUNDER THOSE DICE
Hanpen: UMU!!
Gaou: LEAVE THE LOGISTICAL SUPPORT TO ME
Beauty: !!
Angel 777: WELL, COME AT US
Pachidama: WE'LL SHOW YOU OUR TACTICS-TAMA--!!
Bo-bobo & Hanpen: THE SMALL-FRY ARE CROWDING US---
56.
Bo-bobo & Hanpen: GATTAI CHOUOUGI: PERFECT HANPEN-SHOU!!!
Pachidama & Angel 777: !! UWAAAAAAA, A GREAT FORCE!! A LARGE-VOLUME OF HANPEN ARE COMING----!!
Slot word: Hanpen
57.
Pachidama: HERE'S WHERE I'LL APPEAR-TAMA! WE'LL GO WITH A GAMBLING COMBO
Pachidama: REACH-TECHNIQUE SECRET WITH 80% TRUST: VIOLENTLY-HEATED ADVANCE-NOTICE PACHIDAMA-GROUP!!
(TN: Pachidama is using a technique tied to "reach", a special maneuver within a game of Pachinko where two numbers in a slot end up matching, with the outcome of everything relying on the third. Many times "Reach" ends up coming up every four spins in a Pachinko game, building up the hopes of a player before the final number is revealed...meanwhile, "Violently Heated" is "Gekiatsu" in Japanese...then again, this whole thing does remind me a lot of some stuff from Sawai's next work "Chagecha"...)
Angel 777: ALRIGHT! THE REST WILL BE LEFT TO ME
SFX: GACHAN
Angel 777: IT'S COME! A DEFINATE CHANGE JACKPOT!!
Slots: HIME-SAMA | ATTACK POWER | TIMES 30
Chinchiro-Hime: YOU'VE DONE WELL, YOU TWO. ATTACK POWER X 30
Chinchiro-Hime: HA
Chinchiro-Hime: (3) AND (6)
Chinchiro-Hime: CASINO HOUSE POIFUL-KUN (out loud) GO
Beauty: WHAT IS THAT!!?
58.
Chinchiro-Hime: SAIKORO BAKUCHI SHINKEN CHOUOUGI: A REQUEST TO REFORM FOR A YEAR!!!
Beauty: GUWAAAAAA, SHE'S RETURNING THE HANPEN---!!! (AND FURTHER THAT TECHNIQUE DOESN'T HAVE ANY CONNECTION AT ALL TO GAMBLING--!!)
Hanpen: GUOOOO, IS THIS SELF-RESPONSIBILITY---I CAN'T EAT THESE---
Beauty: KYAAA, THOSE TWO
Chinchiro-Hime: THAT'S REGRETTING. I WIN AGAIN WITH ODD
Chinchiro-Hime: PAY WITH A CHIP!
Hatenko: HUH
59.
Don Patch: HATENKO!!
Dice Symbols: OYABIN LIFE
Tennosuke: PUPU...SERVES HIM RIGHT
Beauty: EVEN HATENKO-SAN...IT CAN'T BE
Chinchiro-Hime: THIS IS FUN: MY DICE COLLECTION IS GROWING! GROWING!
Bo-bobo: KU
Bo-bobo: THIS IS THE TRUE-POWER OF THE IXEX...CHINCHIRO-HIME...SHE'S STRONG
TN: It's been forever since I've said this...but this has to be the most incredible Bo-bobo chapter I've done in forever. I know that sometimes the standards of Bo-bobo are high...but somehow since Hanpen has shown up and they've met with Chinchiro-Hime, the fight has just been beyond insane! I think strangely that what makes this battle so insane and brilliant...is just how well structured it is based on the gambling theme. The whole basis of Chinchiro-Hime's battle style being a weird all-out version of "Chinchiroutou" complete with fighting over dice just seems so simple yet effective at the same time, not to mention the way that she is just so complimented by having pachinko and slot-minions working alongside her. Heck, the whole concept of her "rolling" special attacks with her own dice alongside the "Death Dice" game leading to her summons are likewise something I actually once came up with as some sort of weird battle style...but it's done so well and yet so simple at the same time. Heck, even much of the classic Bo-bobo puns (Chin-Chirou, Ika-sama), Sawai's love of the past (the sticker list) and the most insane Death Note parody yet (even though having Don patch as both Light and Misa was...weird)...suddenly I can't wait for the next chapter, and I haven't said that in a while!
BTW: After reading about how certain mangaka "get ideas from one idea for the next" in Bakuman...strangely I just feel that there may be more than coincidence we get some of this "gambling terminology" with a certain character in "Chagecha"...but I'm still bitter about how that series turned out. (grumbles about the lack of taste of Jump voters)

THE REST WILL BE LEFT TO ME
SFX: GACHAN
