#80: The Tennyo’s Hagoromo

(TN: A tennyo, which literally translates as “heavenly woman” but is also known as a “celestial maiden”, is a type of nymph or fairy who exists within Buddhism, usually seen as an unnaturally beautiful woman who wear luxuries or the enlightenment symbol of the lotus blossom.)
Kyouko: It can’t be…!?

Boy: I’ve been hospitalized for three years with illness! Since it will be fine for a bit, can we talk?
Kyouko: Well…you’ve been ill since three years ago…

Boy: Yes. My right half of my body is gradually becoming paralyzed. Even with surgery, the probability I’ll get better is only 30%; so, if you are Tennyo-san, then what do I do?

Kyouko: Hahaha: I…I skipped breakfast for a bit. (to herself) Somehow I’m suddenly tired due to yesterday. Flying uses up energy.
Nube: N? What’s wrong, Kyouko.
Nube: Were you watching the late-night programs? You bare bags under your eyes.
Hiroshi: Under her eyes…bear bags?
(TN: This was a weird pun that somehow I made work but isn’t as good as the original Japanese. Nube originally states to Kyouko “Me no shita ni kuma”, where “kuma” is in this case “cracks” or “crevices”, akin to the “bags under the eyes”. However, the more notable way “kuma” is used in Japanese is “bear”; luckily by having Nube say Kyouko “bares” bags, I was able to make the pun work so Hiroshi thinks she has “bear bags”. (I was going to originally say merely just “bears”, but “bear bags” seemed funnier and works as well))
Hiroshi: So…somehow that Kyouko is in severely bad health…

Hiroshi: Hey, shall I see you off?
Kyouko: Ah—I’m fine. I’m going to make a visit.
Nube: Strange. It’s as if her energy is decreasing, like she’s been sleeping for several days with illness.
SFX: Paaa
Kyouko: Ha—in spite of being that tired, my feeling is exhilarated when I change into a Tennyo~~
Kyouko: I don’t wear anything under the hagoromo, but strangely I don’t feel embarrassed.
Boy: ………

Hiroshi: Hey, Kyouko, somehow you’ve steadily been wearing out. Are you alright?
Kyouko: I’m fine, don’t mind me.
Kyouko: Aah, it’s slightly different even just touching the hagoromo. I’m certain this hagoromo is giving me power.
Hiroshi: What is she doing? (out loud) Kyou…

Hiroshi: Kyouko!
Boy: Hey, we’re on the 22nd floor.

Nube: It coils around humans and soars into the sky, eating their energy until they become mummies!
(TN: We’ll be finding a bit more about Ittan Momen (which translates into “Cotton 1/10th Hectare”) in the Encyclopedia, but Nube ends up adding “Fusuma” to the start, which is “quilt” or “bedding”; somehow it just felt correct to add it as part of the youkai’s name here but it doesn’t have to be considering it merely is “Ittan Momen” usually. There is another connection regarding “Fusuma”, but that too will be explained in the encyclopedia)
Hiroshi: Since that explanation is fine, hurry up, Nube!!
Nube: Namu!!
Ittan Momen: Kyaaaa
Nube: Are you two alright?
SFX: Hyu—
Hiroshi: Wh…what are you doing, dummy—aren’t we falling?
Nube: Don’t worry: recently I’ve obtained an item for flying in the sky.
SFX: Pishi!

Hiroshi: Is…is this a youkai?
Nube: A kudagitsune. It essentially is a spirit-beast used by an itako, but when it was raised by me, it turned out like this.
(TN: Well if you have anyone to thank, then thank Izuna for not getting her kudagitsune back before…that was created)
Hiroshi: If you raised this thing, then you’re becoming more and more unworldly, Nube.
(TN: The word Hiroshi used to describe Nube is “Ningenbanare”, which either has a meaning of “unworldly” or “superhuman”…of course with his connection to Youkai, “unworldly” works way better)
Nube: Back off—

Boy: I’m…undertaking surgery. I’ll get healed and go to school.
Kyouko: Great; I did come even though it was just being noticed for this, but I’m certain you can make friends.
Hiroshi: She wasn’t even wearing panties.
Boy: Yes, I’m certain I’ll make them. Friends I’ll come to get along with like Kyouko-chan and Hiroshi-kun……

#15: Ittan Momen

Ittan Momen is, as in it’s name, a cotton youkai at a length of around one-tenth a hectare. It’s a nicely terrible being that can fly with a flutter, twirl around your neck and cause death by suffocation. It can’t even be cut by physical attacks like swords. However, you can bite it if you have teeth that have been dyed through tooth blackening even once. Due to this, the areas where Ittan Momen have well appeared seem to be where even men paint their teeth black. Furthermore, allies of Ittan Momen exist in various parts of Japan and even the name it is called vary by region. Representatives are known as “Futonkabuse” of Aichi Prefecture and “Fusuma” of Sado Island.
(TN: A couple things:
1. “Futonkabuse” is literally “covering futon”, as in the futon used as bedding to sleep in. This name is used in Aichi Prefecture, the prefecture in Tokai region including the city of Nagoya.
2. I already mentioned the meaning for “Fusuma” without knowing of its connection to being an alternate name of Ittan Momen. However, the place that uses “Fusuma” as the name is Sado Island (Sadogashima), an island off the coast of Niigata in the Sea of Japan (it is politically in Niigata Prefecture) and considered the 6th largest island of the archipelago after the main four islands and Okinawa)

TN: There's something rather creepy or strange about how this chapter turned out, less regarding Kyouko's hagoromo scenario...and more because of the creepiness of what that boy tried to make Kyouko do for him. Yeah, it was terrible to see Kyouko waste away herself to nothing just because she was essentially wearing an Ittan Momen (which usually seems much nicer thanks to Gegege no Kitaro...but this is how it actually is according to the freaky and real legend) even if it gave her flight and a feeling of the power that she was wasting out of her own body. But what felt even creepier...was some boy literally wouldn't go through with surgery just so he could see Kyouko nearly naked every day in tennyo form and stare at her. If he was so shy, then why would he want to pull something like that on the girl at the risk of not finally getting out of the hospital? Though likewise, I think the main reason why the kid turned out to be a slight creep was to make Hiroshi look decent by comparison. Without some sort of weird fault like that, Kyouko would have started falling for him...and we can't have that, considering all that we've endured so far. (lest we introduce you to Miki in that "Mating season" cage again) Oh...and it was neat seeing Nube using his new Kudagitsune again...though luckily at least he didn't mention all of what he went through with Izuna...the less said about what she put him through the better.
