RETURN OF THE GREAT YOUKAI ENCYCLOPEDIA
#17: Daidara Bocchi
The legend that speaks in concern of giants at the initial step in the creation of heaven and earth is seen in myths not just in Japan but all over the world. Similar kinds of giants are in Greek Myths, Norse Myths and Ireland. They generally are short on intelligence and further have hateful treatments with their brutality. On the occasions of the migration of people long, long ago, they had been though of in myths that were brought forth with the friction of the former inhabitants, but that thing will be put here.
Well then, the legend of Daidara Bocchi remains in various parts of Japan. It is also called “Deedara Bocchi”, but its roots seem to be as a god. “Yatsukamizu Omitsunu no Mikoto”, which was introduced in “Izumo-no-Kuni Fudoki”, was this. Naturally, since Daidara Bocchi mostly performed the work with a plan and on a whim in regards to grounding the exact plans for the realm and making the mountains and lakes, this god already lost his divinity and seemed to change into a youkai. Due to this, it seems to be a being that is possessed by evil spirits and adds harm to humans, but generally it’s a big-hearted, nice youkai.
(TN: A few notes:
1. The mentioning of the “giants” in other origin myths are in reference to the following:
-Greek: Several of the children of original gods Gaea and Uranos, alongside the Titans and the Cyclops
-Norse: The conflicting side opposing the main Norse pantheon, including Frost Giants, Fire Giants and Mountain Giants. Strangely, many Norse giants are considered “normal size”
-Irish: Most likely referring to the giant Finn MacCoul, who built many of the notable landscape of the Irish landscape including the Giant’s Causeway and the Isle of Man.
2. The “Izumo no Kuni Fudoki” is considered the third-oldest book in Japan, written in 733 and written completely about the “Izumo Kingdom” of the early age of Japanese myth. It translates into “Topography of the Nation of Izumo”
3. Yatsukamizu Omitsunu no Mikoto is, as mentioned here, a giant god who helped form Izumo, as was domain of early Japanese gods)
TN: Well, it's finally happened...and I'm not making it up this time: for the first time in this sequence...and possibly forever (well not forever, more like 2004), I've translated a new Nube chapter. Sure it feels rather unsure compared to the previous ones, but I'm shocked the day has finally come where this chapter would be done by me.
As for the chapter itself...it was weird considering the scenario. The concept of it was rather neat: a massive giant who literally changes the world around it without ruining or harming anything and with the people around it thinking that "it's always been that way". The weird part that got me really confused...was the mere fact that it was Miki that invoked it, let alone that people got suspicious of it because...well, it was Miki. The way that Miki invoked it in particular was weird: she didn't like the flowers were withering and dying and thus lead to Daidara Bocchi to move the under-construction building to give them light. Considering that there were all these protestors who were against the building being there...and not one realizing that it had been moved, it makes you wonder what exactly they wanted to protest in the first place. The power regarding how Daidara was able to make people forget things as they were and make them remember it "as it always had been" just seemed to get confusing even if it worked, in particular with the part with the widening road. I guess all you really can say is "it's a god so of course it works in mysterious ways". Though at the same time, the mere fact that it was there and interested in Miki without Nube even sensing it was weird in itself. It makes one wonder if there are pocket dimensions in this world where youki can't be traced outside those who know of it's existence. The mere fact that Miki tapped into something that Nube couldn't just got confusing...but hey, it was a good chapter so I'm not going to complain too much about it.
