(Translator’s Note: As all of us know, Bo-bobo is well known for its parodies, particularly of Jump series past and present. With that in mind, it was obvious that the classic Akira Toriyama series “Dragonball” was going to be a target for the insanity. However, I would like to make particular note of not just what was done in this series…but the scene that he chose to do. When one thinks of Dragonball, you know what you think of first: a series which begins with a powerful monkey child traveling the world and fighting bad guys while getting magical mystical balls…and later becomes a mostly fighting extravaganza that seems to only concentrate on Saiyans and such. If you were to homage or mock something from Dragonball, what would one go for first? The power-levels, the Golden transformation, the maniacal villains…well OK, Sawai went with the last one for his first dip into the DB universe. But the amazing factor was what he chose to do: a nearly exact depiction of that scene where Frieza and his minions were flying across the Namek skylines already triumphant with several Dragonballs at that moment. When people make fun or homage Frieza, its more his fights than his general merciless behavior…yet somehow, it was this homage that really brought out what he wanted to get across. But of course, the obvious factor is that Purupuu is pretty much a Frieza homage first and foremost (even with his cat head and horns), so of course he’s going to be merciless…and flying around in some giant pod thing he used until the climactic final battle at the end of his arc. (Which was supposed to be Toriyama’s final battle but we won’t get into that now) The whole bit, particularly the part where Don Patch turned into a Vegeta clone, made the whole chapter. Oh, and another note for the chapter: while most of the names in this series are probably weird, bizarre puns, the whole fact that Purupuu’s minions are a giant box of cigarettes who’s name is a Japanese way of saying ‘No Smoking’ and a girl who’s named after a popular lemon soda (the one with the marble in the bottle) just has to be pointed out.)
