The problem of divination is tricky, especially when even the simplest of measures can be helpful...or cause a lot of problems. Miki may have found one that actually may finally show her worth...but is there such a thing as too much help?

Vol. 11: The Resurrection Jutsu
#87: Treasure-Hunting with a Fuuchi!?

7.
Narrator: Cooking Practice.
Sign: Home Economics Lab
Student 1: He—y, these vegetables have mud on them—
SFX: Wai wai gaya gaya
Student 2: Ah, look, this egg has two yolks!
Miki: Hmm hmm, understood.
Book: The Wonders of Fuuchi
Shizuka: Miki-chan!! Stop reading that weird book and help us out—
Miki: I’m busy now! Do it in my place!

8.
Voice: Ah—you idiot!!
Kyouko: What are you doing? You’ve mixed up the fresh eggs and the rotten eggs!
Hiroshi: I…I’m sorry.
Kyouko: Don’t be sorry; what—are we going to do with cooking practice!!
Miki: Fufu…there seems to be a worry.
Miki: Fu
Kyouko: Miki!
Miki: I shall present you with distinguishment.
SFX: Gosogoso
Caption: Like Dora*mon!!
(TN: Obviously the hidden word is tied to Fujiko F. Fujio’s classic manga/anime series “Doraemon”, though in this case it is the way Miki is wearing that apron and pulling out her assistance, just like how the earless blue cat robot can pull out a useful device from his fourth-dimensional pocket)
Kyouko: Eh? What are you doing…

9.
Miki: Ta—da! With this!!
Kyouko: A five-yen coin…with a string attached!?

10.
Student 1: What’s that, what’s that?
SFX: Zawa zawa zawa zawa
Student 2: Miki’s seems to be starting some interesting play again.
Kyouko: Isn’t that a mere five-yen coin; you’ll know the fresh eggs and rotten eggs with that?
Miki: Seems so: this is called a “fuuchi”—
(TN: “Fuuchi” is a short version of “Furiko”, which is Japanese for “pendulum”. Instead of making up a name that cutens pendulum, I’ll just be calling it “fuuchi”)
Hiroshi: I know what that is: you stare at the swaying five-yen piece and
SFX: Snore
Miki: Wrong, dummy.
Miki: Fuuchi is divination using a pendulum that was handed down from China, where it is written “” in Chinese. (Ohon)
(TN: I’m actually having a hard time finding the kanji for the Chinese version, just use the kanji here as it was in the Japanese)
Hiroshi: Snore—Snore—
Kyouko: Heh.
Student: You should show us!
Miki: Whether or not this egg is a good egg or not?
Miki: If it starts turning to the right, it’s a good egg…in other words
Miki: It’s fresh; here.
SFX: Kacha

11.
Miki: If it starts turning to the left, it’s bad…it’s rotten. This…is spinning to the left…
Miki: It’s rotten.
SFX: Kasha | Doro
Everyone: Ooh~~!
Miki: Fuuchi is a simple divination that sees just if it’s good or bad. Clockwise is good. Counter-clockwise is bad.
(TN: The clockwise/counterclockwise comment is building on the prior information in an appropriate manner: “clockwise” is an object that moves to the right, “counterclockwise” is when it moves to the left)
SFX: Sa sa sa | Gochin
Signs: Good | Bad
Hiroshi: Guu
Hiroshi: This five-yen coin seems to perceive bad energy and good energy. Why it rotates I don’t know, but I’m certain that a god is rotating it.

12.
Kyouko: Amazing…
Student 1: This is the first time Miki-chan has been helpful to people…
Student 2: She’s high-prided~~
(TN: The “large nose” that Miki now sports is tied to the expression “hanataka”, which literally translates into “pride”, but literally is a “person with a high nose”)
Miki: No problem.
Student: But can’t the power of Fuuchi do that thing.
Nube: Well…has their cooking become delicious…?
Caption: Person who comes to snatch food.
Miki: I filled in a name on this simple body-drawing and can do a physical examination.
Caption: Nueno Meisuke
-Head
-Throat
-Lung | Lung
-Hand | Heart | Hand
-Stomach
-Bowels
-Foot | Foot
Miki: A spin to the right is good, left is bad.
Nube: Well!? These eggs are left over!?
Miki: Nube now has a bad stomach.
SFX: Kachin | Doro | Sa
Caption: Rotten eggs
SFX: Gorogorogoro | Pi~~
Nube: Upu…

13.
Nube: Zee zee haa haa
SFX: Doza—
Student 1: She was right…
Student 2: Amazing……
Student 1: You’re always a troublemaker, but you’re amazing just this time!
Student 2: You’re great, Miki!
Student 3: The Queen of Fuuchi!
Miki: Ho~~hohoho!
Nube: Fuuchi divination…that Miki, is she devoted in that thing this time…this isn’t much of a bad play but…well, if she doesn’t get too absorbed into it, this won’t be a dangerous thing but…
Miki: Further, Fuuchi has this ability too. Better fortune in having good human connections!
Miki: First I’ll make a diagram of nearby human connections----for example, I’ll prepare a class seating.
Chart: (top to bottom)
Sekitani | Horie
Hiroshi | Kyouko
Me | Okano
Katsuya | Makura
(TN: Note “Okano” and “Makura”, the last names of the mangaka Takeshi Okano and Shou Makura)

14.
Miki: Like so…I’ll search out the feelings towards me one by one. Well, Katsuya is greatly rotating right; well then, he’s interested in me.
Miki: Yamada’s rotating left…does he hate me?
Miki: Matsui-san…Ge! She really hates me~~
(TN: Um…yeah, that thing with the ribbon and stubble…is a female. Matsui is sort of one of those weird and prominent characters who isn’t that important, but I sort of want to warn you before you get any ideas since she does appear a few times from here on)
Miki: A person like her gets a hexagram.
Name: Matsui
SFX: Shu--…shu--…
Miki: This is a katadama that sends good energy; neutralizing the bad energy. If there’s a person that possesses bad feelings for me, I could come to have bad luck with just that.
(TN: “Katadama” is a Japanese word that is just in Japanese and literally translates into “model-spirit”)
Miki: I always carry this seating chart that I made like this. If I do it like that…
Chart: (top to bottom)
…guchi | Oodai
Satou | Yamada
Sakaki | Matsui
Ikeda | Kageshima
Hashinomoto
Caption: She placed the mark on people she wants to get along with and people that hate her.

15.
Matsui: Miki-chan, here: I’m giving you a signed ball from player Matsui of the Kyojin.
(TN: The “Kyojin” isn’t the “Giants” like a lot of sports teams are named; “Kyojin” here translates into “Void People”)
Miki: Hey—an immediate effect.
Yamada: Forget your homework? Copy mine.
Miki: Hey hey.
Boy: Hosokawa-san, I have this from before…
Miki: Hey—
Miki: Uhyo—amazing effects! I’ve already rapidly become completely absorbed in this!
Nube: ……
Miki: I’ll investigate the bad energy that dwells in my property. If it’s in there, I’ll throw it away. With this, I’ll come to have good luck.

16.
Miki: Finally, the most effective use of this is—
Miki: To be able to detect spirits who possess bad energy. In other words: a Ghost Detector.
Objects: (from bottom, clockwise) Entrance | Bed | Desk | Window | Bureau
Caption: Rough Sketch of her own room.
Missing Entrance (top right): Bookcase
Miki: Clockwise
Miki: Clockwise
Miki: Right

17.
Miki: Left…

18.
Miki: Purification Salt!!
SFX: Ba!! | Shu!
Miki: I’ll make a salt pile where I discover an evil spirit in the house like this.
(TN: “Salt pile” is in reference to “morishio”/”morijio”, a special pile of salt used for purification of a plot of land usually found in front of a Shinto shrine)
Mrs. Hosokawa: ?
Miki: With this, the spiritual construction of our house will become better.
(TN: “spiritual construction” is in connection to the term “kasou”, which is a divination term for the construction of a house)
Narrator: The next day
Student 1: Wa, what is this?
Student 2: Why is there salt in this place?
Nube: Salt piles have been placed even in places with harmless wandering spirits. Who’s doing it?
Miki: OK, next we’ll scatter them on the commuting rute.
Nube: I thought so.
Kyouko: We’ll come to not have Nube.
Miki: Right: we’ll be “Hell Female-Student Miki-chan” from next chapter.
(TN: Miki’s playing with the name of the series again: her new “title” is “Jigoku Joseito Miki-chan”, which translates exactly to what I just put down above)

19.
SFX: Sura…
Miki: I’m tired~~there are quite—the evil spirits. Today we’ll stop with this area—
SFX: Gyun!
Miki: !!
Kyouko: What is this…it’s a right rotation with amazing force…right…well—that’s good energy.
Kyouko: But it’s strange: from the way it’s shaking…this would be best to ask Nube after all.
Miki: What are you saying?
Miki: We’ve decided that clockwise is a good thing; so I’m certain it’s a divine message of God.
Kyouko: Ah, Miki.
Miki: It’s saying that I’ve been rewarded for being too good a girl; right—right—that’s decided as such.
SFX: Da!

20.
Kyouko: It’s dangerous with the cliff being cut into here.
Miki: Hahaa—h.
Miki: Well then, there’s buried treasure in here! (Hyahho--!)
Kyouko: Ah, you dummy Miki…
SFX: Gara! | Dododododo
Miki: Kyaaaa!!
Kyouko: Miki

21.
Nube: What: Miki is buried alive!?
Nube: That dummy! How could she have gone there being deceived by that abnormal Fuuchi waving?
Kyouko: Bu…but, she thought the Fuuchi was a god…
Nube: There is a thing that is the God of the Fuuchi! It is called the Stray Inari; in spite of not having great spiritual power, it appears as a god and seems to deceive humans…
(TN: The “Stray Inari” is “Hagure Inari”; as mentioned before, an “Inari” is a Japanese god/kami of fertility and agriculture as well as worldly success)
Nube: It’s a low-grade spirit…!
SFX: Oooooooh

22.
Nube: You’re an intruder, go away!!
Spirit: Gyan
Kyouko: Miki—where is she—
SFX: Gag a
Nube: No! Even if we dig at random, it’s so vast.
Nube: How long has it been since she was buried!?
Kyouko: Ten minutes…
Nube: Damn this…We can’t do anything more
Voice 1: What’s going on?
Voice 2: Is there a problem?

23.
(Well…I guess the crane may work the same way…)

24.
Nube: Please move this for a short while.
Construction Worker: Does he really know the place where she is buried over there…?
Kyouko: Nube…
Nube: I know…
Nube: The movement of the Fuuchi isn’t a god; much less it isn’t an evil spirit. It’s the latent perception ability possessed by humans…That is amplified by a pendulum…Still more, if I use the perception ability of my own as a spiritualist…

25.
SFX: Gurun gurun gurun
Nube: Clockwise! She’s beneath!
SFX: Za za za
Nube: Miki
SFX: Zaza!
Nube: Miki!
Kyouko: Miki!!
Miki: Keho keho (cough cough)
SFX: Pe

26.
Miki: Huh? The buried treasure was…?
Kyouko: Dummy.
Narrator: Fuuchi actually is the movement of your own hand. However, it isn’t bogus. It is the perception of if something is good or something is bad to yourself with latent abilities. So you say, it’s an amplifier of perceptive ability.
Narrator: If you understand this as an amplification of your own abilities, then you won’t be deceived by an evil spirit like Miki this time. However, please never have this done by people with weak willpower or people who easily take suggestions. By all means, please do it together with an adult when you want to do this.

TN: Obviously if Miki found all of the youkai in town and eliminated them, there would be no series. It probably would have been canceled, even if she is rather adept at these sorts of things about now. I think the whole chapter sort of is a variation of the "Angel-Sama" incident, but taken in a direction that is slightly different: what if Miki gained a power that actually was useful...until she took it too far and was abused by a youkai who wanted to rid her? Obviously Miki is one who usually takes things too far, considering she takes something simple and just goes further and further along with it until it takes Nube to save her life (as you saw with the crane at the end) There wasn't anything really wrong with the Fuuchi at first, it was only when it became her latest obsession...and when Miki gets obsessed with something, people suffer for the most part. Strangely though it was for the most part useful...though considering Miki has her own spiritual power already within her (remember: she is a Rokurokubi), it just had another means of being used in a helpful but dangerous manner. (oh...and I can't stand that all we got of Mrs. Hosokawa was that one minor cameo...)

BTW: what was the point of the title considering...well, the only real treasure hunting was the incident leading to her capture by the youkai?
