When celebrating a momentous occasion, something big always occurs in a shonen manga. As "Hell Teacher Nube" reaches it's 100th chapter, the students of 5-3 are about to take part in a simple little game...that may freak them all!

#100: The Hundred Tales

87.
“Voice”: When I was born, an aunt of mine made an Ichimatsu Doll that resembled me.
(TN: The narrator uses an expression here of “Shinseki no obasan”; “Shinseki” is “a relative” while “obasan” is “aunt”, thus “my relative aunt”; it really didn’t work in English so I just said “an aunt of mine”)
“Voice”: It was extremely valuable, but I had a hunch that its height and hair seemed to be growing at the same time as I was growing up; I came to have a bad feeling about it and kept it for many years within my closet.
Kyouko: However, just recently…
SFX: Goto
SFX: Su…

88.
Kyouko: In there was the doll, having come to have the same height as I did.
“Ichimatsu Doll”: You’re mean, Kyouko-chan.
SFX: Gishi…gishi…
Kyouko: I was surprised and shut the closet. When I saw it next, the doll didn’t have a shadow or a form…It may have been an illusion, but that was my scariest personal experience.
Kyouko: With that…the 97th tale has ended.
SFX: Fu

89.
Nube: Alright, that was quite good, Kyouko.

90.
Nube: Well then, we’re at the 98th tale with the next one…very soon will be the 100th tale. It shall be amusing.
Makoto: What will happen when we reach the 100th tale?
Hiroshi: It’ll be a 100-chapter commemorative front-page color Nube Special. The front cover will have Hori-san’s “Correspondence with the Spiritual World” with a full-nude of Nube.
(TN: A couple things:
-I really don’t know who Hori-san and the “Correspondence with the Spiritual World” bit was about, if someone can instruct me, then please advise me and I’ll adjust the script.
-The comment “full nude” is actually in Japanese the expression “hair nude”, which isn’t just a nude shot but a nude that shows everything of a person, including the lower privates)
Center of Cover: Metallic Glittering Cover Page | You’ll see everything!!
Left Side of Cover: Hori-san’s Correspondance with the Spiritual World
Bottom Caption: That’s a lie. (Editorial department)
Nube: Fufu…what is called the Hundred Tales is gathering at night and burning a hundred candles as we’re doing as such…
(TN: The concept of “The Hundred Tales” is in Japanese “Hyakumonogatari”, which is a literal translation and typically known as “Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai” or “A Gathering of One Hundred Supernatural Tales”. While it is a Japanese term, the literal translation is used here due to it being an easy translation.)

91.
Nube: We tell scary stories in turn and in turn with the end of a story, we put out one of the candles. There are a hundred…When they’ve been finished putting out will be with the hundredth.
Nube: And then, when the final one has been finished putting out
Nube: An extremely terrible thing will occur.
Hiroshi: A terrible thing?
Miki: We’re the Nube class. At this point…
Nube: For example, it could possibly be this.
Both Cards: Report Card | Failed
SFX: Zozo~~~
Nube: Well that’s a—joke.
Akira: Will this legend have a real ?
Noriko: Perhaps. But we should be relieved if we have Nube here…
(TN: I sort of was a tad confused by Noro-chan’s “eeh” here, whether it’s confirming Akira’s idea that “a monster will appear” or wondering if it will happen or not with “maybe”. Thus I went with “perhaps”, but it could be changed if you think it is right)

92.
Hiroshi: Well, with that, I’ll go with the 99th tale!
Kyouko: Phew…since Hiroshi is thoughtless, I’m certain it won’t be scary…
(TN: Another weird language note where we could have two possible interpretations: Kyouko infers to Hiroshi as “nouten”, which is either “thoughtless” or “optimistic”; strangely both apply to Hiroshi, but with his “dumb” nature, I had Kyouko make it “thoughtless”)
Hiroshi: Yes…this is from when I had gone to the sea last year.
Hiroshi: What’s the matter?
Man: Three tourists drowned last night and they seem to be unaccounted for.
Man: These college students that came from Tokyo were drinking sake and seemed to be riding on a boat. 12 hours have already passed…they seemed to have died long ago but…

93.
Man: A local diver is going under and searching for them.
“Mustache”: I ask you to handle this.
Hiroshi: However…that diver didn’t ascend up even after quite a long period passed.
(TN: “Quite a long period” is “itsu made”, which usually is “forever”, but I didn’t want to make it utterly indefinite so I just made it “a long period”)
Boat Man: It’s terrible, see this!
SFX: Zabu zabu
Voice: They’re here! It’s the college students and the diver!
Hiroshi: Tens of minutes later
Man 1: They died…the diver too…
SFX: Zawa zawa
Man 2: But…that’s…
Voice: What is this way they died…!?

94.
SFX: Oooooh
Hiroshi: In the autopsy results, the college students had spent 12 hours down there after their deaths. So why would the corpses, who died 12 hours earlier, be clinging to him……furthermore, in spite of the corpses being completely rigor and pulled off of him, it was said to be done at length by taking several people.
Hiroshi: That’s the end of the 98th tale!
SFX: Fu

95.
Kyouko: He…hey, stop that already~~
Hiroshi: Why? We have two left and yet…
Miki: With two more tales, an interesting thing will occur.
Kyouko: Why have we come to do this…
Kyouko: If this was as typical, Nube would have stopped this and yet…
Kyouko: Now that I mention it, Nube was strange today…
Nube: Hey, we’re gathering in the classroom and having a party tonight.
Kyouko: Strange; he always hates having night amusement and yet…
Miki: But this seems amusing! Let’s go, let’s go!
Kyouko: And this Hundred Tales…there’s something strange about this…

96.
Miki: So…the 99th…My turn.
Hiroshi: Great, we’ve waited for this!
Katsuya: It’s because Miki is a genius for this sort of thing.
Miki: Right…it was when I was in 3rd Grade.
Miki: When I was watering the flower bed after school…
“Girl”: Where are the swings?
Miki: There was a girl that I hadn’t seen…She was wearing clothing that were strangely old-fashion.
Miki: A transfer student? Over there.
Miki: Huh…?

97.
SFX: Kii…kii…
Miki: Unawaringly she…
Miki: Well, it’s fine…
“Girl”: Hey, where’s the jungle gym?
(TN: “Jungle gym” is a weird Japanese word: the Japanese word is “untei”, which typically is for an “escalade”, but is also used for the children’s play set akin to the monkey bars or jungle gym)
Miki: Around the school gate…ah.
SFX: Su
Miki: You’re kidding…?
Miki: What is that child?... (narrating) My mood became bad…
“Girl”: Hey, where is the slide? (Kusu kusu…)
Miki: It’s…on the rooftop.

98.
“Girl”: Kekekekekeke
SFX: Jaka jaka jaka
Miki: With that girl climbing to the roof, she didn’t come down from then on. With that, the 99th tale has ended…
SFX: Fu

99.
Nube: Well thehn…with that, the remaining candle is one…next is finally the 100th tale. The final tale will be done by me.
Hiroshi: Ooh, the star performer finally enters.
Katsuya: If it’s Nube, then we have a spirit pro…It will be a super-scaary tale.
(TN: Yeah, Katsuya does say “Koee”, which is a slang version of “kowai”)
Miki: I’m excited.
Shuichi: Fu.
Nube: Before I do…I have to give background information and teach you about the youkai who willappear when I tell the 100th tale of the Hundred Tales. It’s name is…
Nube: Aoandon.
(TN: “Aoandon” translates into “The Blue Andon”, with an “andon” being a traditional Japanese paper lantern)
Kaneda: Hahaha, that’s a strange name.
Kyouko: Wh…what a guy.

100.
Nube: Aoandon is a small demon that is said to be the guide to the realm of the dead. He does the Hundred Tales to humans and the spiritual power that is gathered there is utilized and creates a giant Kimon*.
*An entrance and exit to the realm of the dead.
(TN: As mentioned back in Vol. 2, “Kimon” is Japanese for “Demon Gate”)
Nube: When the Kimon opens up, it comes to free up as an entrance and exit to the realm of the dead and youkai in the hundreds or thousands successively come above the ground and this land will end up being filled up with youkai for the period of a month just like in “Inou Mononokeroku”.
Caption: A record book of The Hundred Tales written by Hanshi of Bingo Inou Budayuu
(TN: Quite a few things to go through here…and considering there isn’t an Encyclopedia entry with this chapter, I have to go essentially with as much research as I can attempt to pull up:
-“Inou Mononokeroku” is literally “Inou’s Record of Mononoke”, with “Mononoke” another name for “youkai” and “Inou” referring to “Inou Budayuu”, the author of the work.
-A “Hanshi” is a warrior who serves a “Han”, which is the classic “domain” controlled by feudal lords mostly active during the Edo period.
-Bingo refers to “Bingo Province”, a province on the Inland Sea in what’s today Eastern Hiroshima Prefecture)

101.
Kyouko: Wh…what is he deceiving us with that dangerous thing?
Hiroshi: W…well, it’s because of his self-confidence of our absolute safety if we’re with Nube.
Miki: Isn’t that so?
Nube: Well then..with that, shall I tell our 100th tale? It was on a certain sultry night…the children who were gathered in the classroom were there for the Hundred Tales.
SFX: Koto…
Nube: And then…when the 100th tale was over…Aoandou actually appeared…and opened the Kimon…the children were taken away to the realm of the dead, without leaving one behind…

102.
Nube: With that…the 100th is done. I’ll put it out.
Hiroshi: !!
Kyouko: Ah…ah…
Kyouko: The Oni no Te is his right hand…!!

103.
Kyouko: Ah…
Miki: J…just a moment…
Aoandou: Thanks to all of you doing the Hundred Tales, the spirits in this vicinity have gathered and have become the power to open the Kimon. I thank you for helping in the work of Aoandou.
SFX: Goki goki goki
“Spirits”: Gya~~~… | Gueee… | Oooooh | Ooooooh

104.
Aoandou: It’s over.
Aoandou: ……
Aoandou: However…it’s strange. Why hasn’t the Kimon opened up to now in this place that has concentrated spirits to this extent? The spiritual magnetic field of this school is the average of Mt. Osore…naturally it should have been fine even to open a Kimon and yet.
(TN: Yeah, this does mention “spiritual magnetic field”, a literal translation of “reiteki jiba”)
Voice: Here’s why.
SFX: Guwaaaa

105.
Nube: Because I’m here.
SFX: Gushaa

106.
SFX: Shuuuu
Nube: Fu, if it was disguised as me, it wasn’t disguised much more handsomely.
Katsuya: He’s for real--!
Hiroshi: Nube!!
Kyouko: That was scary—
Miki: I’m certain that was because of the 100 consecutive tales.
Nube: Dummies! Why were you doing the Hundred Tales!
Kyouko: But, Nube, you came to save us after all.
Nube: No…I didn’t have food in my apartment.
Caption: Stock of the Night-Watch Room
SFX: Zuruzuru…
Nube: Now, get home quickly and do your homework!
Students: Aw~~w.

TN: So...who figured out the truth about "Nube" before the reveal? Anyone? Well...honestly, I never did. I knew the Oni no Te usually is on the left hand, but it isn't something you keep an eye on for too often, so it's just one of those things that just becomes obvious that you never really think about.

This is strangely the "second" of three chapters you really could accept as the "2nd anniversary" chapter of Nube...the first was that Binbougami one a while back and the next...well, is coming in a couple more chapters. In a way, this chapter feels a bit like a true freaky and good way to spend an anniversary for Nube, at least compared to the Binbougami one. (the other one...well that's more a major event so it's really hard to compare it to this) The chapter really takes the series to the core of what it's really about: Nube, the students, and a whole lot of freaky stuff going on. Probably my favorite aspect is that for the most part all of the key students in 5-3 got a line here or there in the chapter, from the "main five" (Hiroshi, Kyouko, Miki, Katsuya, Makoto) to others like Akira, Shuichi, Noriko, even Kaneda. I probably would have also thrown in Shizuka somewhere (especially since the first tale involved another Ichimatsu Doll) but then we would have wanted all the cameoing students as well...and it would have been a mess. Honestly sticking with mostly the main students (yeah, the main five plus those 4 work out...) probably was for the best. Though of course the whole "Hyakumonogatari" scenario was freaky in itself...but mostly due to the idea of the room slowly getting darker and darker as the stories remain scary until one remains and you nearly open up a gateway to hell. Sure Nube saved the day...but of course it was all in the name of who Nube is...and his own weird poverty. (so I guess all we can say is this: poverty and cup ramen saved Nube...take that, Binbougami!)

Unfortunately I can't. With the whole crackdown we have as of late, it's rather impossible without drawing attention to do that.
