Narration: Parasites—various beings from small ones that can’t even be seen by the eye to those that reach 10 meters in length that are illness organisms that nest within the human body. In particular, in an era where there weren’t chemical fertilizers or medicines that kill insects, there existed strange parasites that couldn’t be thought of in the present.
(TN: “Illness organisms” is the Japanese term of “Byouchuu”, which literally translates into “insects of illness”)
Parasite Collection: (from top, left to right)
-Diphyllobothrium latum ([Fish] Tapeworm):
An infection from fish and parasites within the intestines. Length of 5-10 meters. Has increased in infected in recent years.

-Ascardida
Length of 30cm. Parasites in the intestines and liver. At one time infected 80% of Japanese people.

-Schistosoma Japonicum
Parasites within the blood. Length of 1~2 cm.

-Thelazia callipaeda (Oriental Eyeworm)
Parasites in the eye.

-Echinococcosis
Parasites the intestines and liver and ultimately to the brain and creates a giant sack with fluid within it. Once had a major outbreak in Hokkaido. The ratio of fatalities is extremely high.
(TN: We’ve got quite a few parasites mentioned here, so I guess I’ll add in a bit regarding each one of them to better understand them:
-Diphyllobothrium latum, the Fish tapeworm, is a parasite typical of those who eat a large amount of undercooked or raw fish, thus its prevalence in Japan. It typically infects smaller fish, but gets to human due to the bigger fish who eat the smaller fish that are ultimately eaten by humans. It lives usually up to 20 years within a person.
-Ascaridida is a family of parasitic roundworms usually found in the intestines, such as “Anisakidae” and “Ascarididae”.
- Schistosoma Japonicum is a blood parasite that is yellow or yellow-brown in color notable for going after blood.
-Thelazia callipaeda, the Oriental eyeworm, is a parasite that feeds off the tears of its host and lives within eyes. Usually they are found transmitted through flies that feed off tears, like varieties of fruit flies.
-Echinococcosis, also known as hydatid disease, is a disease based off the tapeworm of genus echinococcus. Though known since ancient times, it wasn’t prominently studied until the 17th century and is usually transmitted into humans by ingesting sheep or swine. The parasite in the body creates cysts filled with hydatid fluid that hold an expansive growth and demand a high dosage of vitamins and minerals it steals from them. A little bit more on this particular parasite will be spoken about in the Weird File.)
Narrator: Edo Period: A man called Heihachi, who lived in the interior of Nanbu, suffered from an illness and vomited in his spew a two-legged creature that resembled a tadpole.
(TN: “Nanbu” refers to “Nanbu domain”, another name for Morioka Domain, which encompassed middle-north of Iwate Prefecture and eastern Aomori Prefecture)
Narrator: As another: Shikudou Nanigashi of Tsugaru Domain had an illness in his chest and spit out six insects that were like cicadas that were up to 3 cm.
(TN: The “Tsugaru Domain” is a domain based around the Tsugaru Clan, who took control of the Hirosaki Domain in Mutsu Province (around Aomori) after assisting in victory of the Tokugawa Shogunate and remained lords well into the Meiji period)

134.
Narrator: --If those creatures, perhaps, were around in the present—would you let them in unconcerningly?
Sign: Native Area Reference Room
(TN: The room that is mentioned here is a peculiar one which in Japanese is “Kyoudo Shiryoushitsu”, with “Kyoudou” being a “native place” or “one’s home/birth-place”)
Hiroshi: Hie~~it stinks of mold.
Principal: They’re historic items of the native area.
Hiroshi: Ke, but why must we clean up this room again?
Principal: Because all of you smashed a home run into the Principal’s Office! And further, a direct hit on me!

135.

Hiroshi: Oh, it’s dried, preserved food.
Hiroshi: Is it tasty?
SFX: Paku (Chomp)

(TN: “F-1” refers to “Formula-1”, the notable racing circuit of single-seater auto racing)
Hiroshi: The state of my stomach is a bit.
Miki: Eww, don’t bring out your poop.
(TN: The “bring out” part was a hard part to figure out, but it was based on the word “Morasanai”, which is the negative of “morasu” or “to leak” or “to reveal”)

137.
Hiroshi: He…hey, a large serving. Yamada, I won the bet yesterday. Give me an extra meatball.
SFX: Gurururu Goro goro

Caption Box:
Because this is a woman’s university, there are only woman doctors…perhaps… (Guess of Makura-sensei)
Doctor: No…this parasite hasn’t been discovered anywhere in the world…it’s a new species. Blessedly, this here is a university hospital. This torn-off section will be analyzed.
“Nurse 1”: What is this that’s pointed at—
“Nurse 2”: Kya, I’m sca—red.
“Nurse 3”: It’s larger than him—
Hiroshi: That’s analyzing~~
Nube: Ehehe, it’s great this is a woman’s medical university.

Narrator: That night
SFX: Zuru…zuru…mozo mozo
SFX: Nyururu…buri buri
SFX: Buri buri
Nube: I did buy him gyuudon but…can he eat it?
(TN: As you probably know, “gyuudon” is a dish of rice topped with beef and onions simmered in a sweet sauce flavored with dashi, soy sauce and mirin (rice wine))
Kyouko: He can’t: things that go into his stomach will be entirely eaten by that bug. His nourishment is just intravenous.

143.
Nube: It’s impossible to be removed by a surgical operation…is it…
Nube: In that case
Nube: It can only be the Oni no Te…The Oni no Te can go into the body due to not being a substance of this world.
SFX: Zuru…
(TN: The thing that Nube is pulling out is the trademark Slime monster from the Dragon Quest video game series by Enix, notable for the character designs by WSJ master Akira Toriyama)
SFX: Gui
Nube: …However…

144.
Nube: It’s impossible to pull out an internal object.
SFX: Pishi…
“Bully”: You wanted this thing that much? Eh!? You’re an adult that’s old enough but…
Nube: There is a thing called “psychic surgery” that is performed by the spiritually powered. It appears to actually be performed regularly in the Philippines and Brazil. It was said to have been first performed in 1948 by a man named Eleuterio Terte. It is removing the affected part within the body with bare hands and not leaving behind one remaining scratch. If this technique could be done by me…
(TN: “Psychic Surgery” is a strange phenomenon of spiritual healing originally seen and reported as done by Phillipino Eleuterio Terte in 1957. According to accounts, Terte was able to sink his own hands into a person’s body and emerge with whatever was their malady. To the performer of the surgery, he was only able to do the surgery because he had “the power of the Lord [Christian God] within him” [he was associated with the “Union Espiritista Christiana de Filipinas”, the “Christian Spiritist Union of the Philippines”) It is unknown whether or not the surgery was for real or fraud, but there have been many Phillipino doctors who claim to have similar abilities and arrested for their claims)
Nube: But this technique is closer to Hand Healing, an art of my teacher Minako-sensei, than to mine…If this could be done by me or not…
Nube: It’s impossible…it’s too unknown to me and this isn’t an art I can use…

145.
Kyouko: I’ve pealed it. Here, eat it.
Caption: Unskilled.
Hiroshi: Give up:” at any rate it’s just feed for the bug.
Kyouko: You may not be able to get even a bit of nourishment by saying that.
Hiroshi: That’s enough. You’ll come to hate me if you look at me any further. Don’t you feel bad…if this was a youkai? At any rate, this is a bug, a bug.
Kyouko: You’re stupid, Hiroshi.
Kyouko: Haven’t we come to always have had our lives mutually saved…in other words, even if you become a bug, I won’t run, Hiroshi.
Hiroshi: Kyouko…
Hiroshi: Gu

146.

148.
Minako: I can open and close a wound instantly with healing. Possess it yourself and please save Hiroshi.
Nube: Minako-sensei…
Nube: Right: my teacher is within the Oni no Te! Thank you, Minako-sensei.
SFX: Zubo

Nube: ……..
Kyouko: Hiroshi!
Hiroshi: Hehe…I’m alive…
Nube: This was the parasite…it’s beyond a youkai…I don’t want to see this thing ever again…
Narrator: Parasites live within the body and possess people……That may be just like an evil spirit. There are beings that seem to rival youkai within them. Even in your stomach…perhaps…

NUBE’S WEIRD FILES

#12: Parasites
Within the novel “Seinen no Omei” by Ooe Kenzaburou is a description about the parasite Echinococcosis. They parasite the small intestines of dogs and foxes, but when their eggs run into foodstuffs and get within the bodies of humans, they form a brain tumor called an “echinococcosis cyst” in the liver and brain. When this is ruptured, they discharge an internal liquid, cause Anaphylaxie shock and the patient dies. Further, the cyst is exceedingly easy to destroy and there have been cases where there have been deaths with it breaking from the oscillation of an ambulance. Mainly they are infected with an intermediary of a red fox. Even in the present of April, 1990, 158 municipalities in Hokkaido were designated a contaminant emphasis district. If you go to Hokkaido, it’s best that you don’t touch the wild dogs or red foxes.

The largest organism that has parasite in the human body is, so you say, a fish tapeworm: it reached a maximum of 10m. Because a human’s intestines is 6~7 meters, the organism came to pile up fully within the intestines. You can be infected by eating fishes such as trout or chum salmon. In particular, it’s been said that the infected have increased due to fresh fish becoming sent to cities with the progress of freezing techniques recently.

People who want to gain much more knowledge on this should go to the museum that is a specialist on parasites in Meguro, Tokyo. In here is exhibited various parasites of all eras and places and has come have become a famous date spot. However, I think its best that you don’t go before a meal.

(TN: A few things:
1. Kenzaburou Ooe is a major figure of modern Japanese literature notable for his knowledge and usage of political, social and philosophical issues. “Seinen no Omei” (“The Young Man’s Stigma”) was originally released in 1959.
2. While I mentioned the “echinococcosis cyst” when speaking of Echinococcosis in the chapter, the Japanese term used for it is “Houchuu”, which literally translates into “Engulfing Insect”. It actually really doesn’t have a normal translation but I went along with the technical term for the cyst as mentioned prior with that being the same cyst that grows within the brain.
3. The fox mentioned here is generically a “red fox”, but in actuality it refers to a “kitakitsune”, scientific name Vulpes vulpes schrencki and known as a species of fox that lives in Hokkaido.
4. Trout refers to “masu”, the general term in Japanese, while “sake” is actually a species of salmon known as the “chum salmon”, which lives in various areas around the northern Pacific.
5. Meguro is one of the 23 special wards in Tokyo, notable for its foreign embassies and the exclusive neighborhood Kakinokizaka. The “Meguro Keiseichuu Hakubutsukan” (Meguro Parasitological Museum) is the only parasite-based museum in the world and also located in this ward, possessing 45,000 immersed and prepared parasite specimens, including 1500 type specimens, as well as a collection of documents about the creatures)

TN: Ewwww...sorry, I just need to hold my own stomach in after that one. Going from a cute spider girl last chapter to a monster parasite that eats Hiroshi alive, lays eggs on top of him and turns out to be a multi-headed thing that Nube nearly can't get out just feels like we've stepped into a different manga. Then again, it's been a while since we've really had a chapter as freaky and strange like this so maybe it's a good thing we've gone from the lighter stuff to something more hideous this time around. It's really hard to sort of figure out the main purpose of the chapter but I guess in a way it is two-fold in developing two of the major relationships in the series. On one hand we have Hiroshi and Kyouko, this time with Hiroshi at his worst due to the parasite inside of him and Kyouko trying to hold on and make sure he survives until he is somehow or another cured even with himself being ripped apart by the monster or eaten by baby parasites. On the other seems to further show the connection between Nube and Minako-sensei regarding the Oni no Te. Sure Minako didn't show up that much in the chapter, but the means by which Nube has now gained her hand healing due to having her within the Oni shows that she is still conscious after what happened in vol. 12 and that even her own powers are now somewhat part of Nube's arsenal. It does show a bit of progress on that front even if Nube still has no idea how to help her get out of the Oni once and for all. I do think somehow the chapter did become a tad simple in dealing with the parasite near the end, but it all made sense: Nube removed it, Kyouko squashed it, Hiroshi lived. But...I doubt there are any women's college hospitals where the girls are all as attractive as this and were neglige. Makura may have a vivid imagination but...sometimes when you live in reality, all you can do is laugh at fantasy's insane ideas. I mean I'd wish my doctors were attractive females...but they're usually way older than that so you can't win.
