There are aspects about Nube everyone knows...and then there are the ones no one "should" know. When the most embarrassing moment (well to someone) comes to light with a student in Nube's class, it may need a little...clearing up.

#122: Shock! Nube and Kyouko’s (Secret) Connection

(TN: Izuna…don’t say it like that. Considering you literally burned off your clothing to give your “service” in this volume, what can you turn to next!? BTW: Izuna does appear in a chapter of vol. 15, but the service…well she probably wants to be her “service” as an Itako but we know better…)

(TN: Just a bit of advise: “secret connection” in this section is “Himitsu no Kankei”, which is the direct translation. On the other hand, the title of the chapter involves “Maruhi Kankei”; “Maruhi” is “classified” or “confidential” or “secret”, but only the kanji for “hi”, which is just “secret”, is used even though “maruhi” was its reading in the title of the chapter)

(TN: Nube doesn’t really say “family home”, he says “Jikka”, which is “parent’s home”…though there is a bit more I can’t really speak of yet that will screw this up a bit)
Kyouko: Hmph! There’s a dangerous guy in our neighborhood. Kya—I’m sca—red, this big brother played a prank on me!!
Woman 1: You give a bad feeling, you Lolicon!

(TN: “Aburaage” is a processed fried tofu, made with cutting tofu into slices, then frying it up. There is a supernatural connection of it with foxes…but that would be telling)

Narrator: My cousin had a matter where they became possessed by a fox. First, they came to wet the bed every night; within that, their weiner swelled up and they began to turn in small circles around their futon at night. And then, though he was still in the lower grades of elementary school, he spoke out words that were like a difficult sutra; his face at that time was that of a fox.
(TN: There are a couple weird lines mentioned here I have to clear up:
-First, the narrator is talking about a male cousin, not Kyouko since…she doesn’t have a certain thing mentioned by the comment.
-Second, the “weiner” is “chinchin”, which is slang for “penis”
-Finally, the term “kurukuru”, which I mentioned here as “small circles”, is “to spin around like a small spinning object, such as a top.)

Narrator: The source of fox-possession in children like this is mainly from taking a pee on a route of Oinari-san. You too should be careful. (Shou)
(TN: “Oinari-san” speaks of the “Inari God” or “Inari Okami”, the kami/God of fertility, rice or foxes. Kitsune, which generally talks of “foxes”, is also a term used for the white-messenger foxes of Inari.)

Mr. Inaba: There seems to be a famous spiritualist in this town. This home seems to have been famous in doing exorcisms for generations.
Mrs. Inaba: Ara, oh no. Aren’t we close to that house?

Kyouko: I have some bad premonition…
Mr. Inaba: Excuse me, I’m asking if you can please do an exorcism?
“Nueno”: Aah, are you? Go ahead in.

(TN: “Reibaku Setsudan” = “Binding-Spirit Severance”, with “Reibaku” being literally “spirit-binding” but with the spirit bound to Kyouko, either way could work)

Nube: It’s best that you’re not scared; that’s Oinari-san.
Nube: Inari is essentially what’s called a “Hani” god, a god that rules over the fruitfulness of the five grains. That fox is a high-grade animal spirit that is appointed its messenger. It’s not an evil spirit…it will forgive you if you apologize.
(TN: There are quite a few things to comment about here:
1. Nube uses an expression of Inari being a “Hani” god, which is tough to really translate but uses two kanji: “Han” for “meals” or “boiled rice” and the “I” that typically would translate into “Dog”, but uses the “I” that isn’t the traditional “dog” but the “dog” that is the 11th sign of the Chinese zodiac.
2. The “Five Grains” is a Japanese term called “Gokoku”, which are the five notable Japanese grains: wheat, rice, beans and two types of millet: awa and kibi)
Kyouko: Hmph! I don’t want to apologize! You monster!
Nube: Ah, hey!

Kyouko: How dare you!

Kyouko: This picture was of that time. Though I had thought of throwing it away long ago…
Hiroshi: What, it was a tale from when you were young? I understand.
Miki: Kya—a super Lolicon teacher (25) and his lover K-ko, whom he said “I like the earlobes of kindergartners”
Hiroshi: And there’s one who doesn’t get it.

Nube: Well, we’re starting class.
Kyouko: Right…that was the encounter of me and Nube…I’m certain I really saw him as dreamy at that time…
Kyouko: But…even now…just a bit somehow…

TN: Well...I think after this chapter that the whole "Nube/Kyouko" relationship has taken on a whole new meaning...and we don't need Miki to tell us how or why that is. (besides she'll make it all go overboard) Yeah, Kyouko and Nube were there at the right place at the right time...but you saw how she was blushing...and embracing...and kissing...and you know that when little girls with pigtails do that and then grow up, it just makes things way...weirder. Maybe not too weird but...well, it could get icky if you think about it in a certain way. Probably the most surprising aspect of the chapter is that it wasn't Nube who lived anywhere near Kyouko but the Inaba family who lived in "Nube's hometown". I really had a hard time figuring out how to explain the whole "Nube's parents house" like that was used in the chapter (mostly because of some later events we find out about that could make the situation feel a tad stranger and suspicious on whether or how Nube could be there...but those won't be revealed for a few more volumes), but seeing him as a 19-year old weirdo wandering around town getting everyone angry and the torment of a little, misunderstanding Kyouko (and even a reference to his introduction in chp 1) was hilarious to see ultimately. But as said: seeing the fireball tone down to a cute redhead of...um, passion...well, we know why Kyouko respects him but...the less you think about any other meanings, the healthier we'll all be...and the less that we'll have those "Kyouko and Hiroshi as Godzilla killing each other" moments.
