Miki: Um—why did you come for teaching training and became a doctor without becoming a teacher?
Girls: Kya—kya—
Tamamo: Well, when you take the teaching curriculum at the university, there has come to be training for people who weren’t become teachers. I had wanted to be a teacher, but since I appeared to be going to medical school, my parents wouldn’t permit me.
Kyouko: You’re just lying, though you became a doctor by deceiving with youryoku.
Tamamo: Kyouko-chan, the development of your chest is remarkable.
Kyouko: The girls are done.
Nube: Ah, right.

Nube: Hey, Tamamo! What exactly is your business today? You’re in the surgery department.
Tamamo: Nothing…the internal medicine doctors were all out and they came to me whose hands were free.
Nube: What are you doing as such and coming to do physical examinations—
Tamamo: Nothing in particular.
Nube: Ha.
Nube: It can’t be: you want to see the chests of grade-school girls as a lolicon. (Hi~~no way no way, ah, stop being my rival already.)
Tamamo: Do you know of the strange incident that occurred in Doumori town now?
Nube: A strange incident?
Tamamo: Yes.
Tamamo: Several completely burned people like they’ve been struck by lightning over their entire bodies have been brought in with several a day to the hospital from manholes on the road or the side of drains.

Nube: What’s that!?
Nube: A god-beast…Youjuu who gain the power of a god are incredibly strong...previously I fought the youjuu Kirin, but it tore up the Oni no Te and I couldn’t use my arms or legs…
(TN: I really don’t know or remember if I came across this term yet, but “youjuu” is similar to several other terms I’ve left untranslated, such as “youkai”, “youryoku” or “youki’, but here it refers to supernatural animals or creatures with the “you” beginning akin to “calamity” or “bewitching”)

22.
Tamamo: Do you know of Mizuhame?
Nube: Actually…it’s an ancient water god that appeared in Japanese myth…
Tamamo: That’s right. The myth is that it was born immediately after the death of Izanami and appeared in the form of a snake or a dragon. That turtle touched the shintai of the ancient god Mizuhame that was thrown to the bottom of sludge and gained it’s spiritual power.
(TN: I won’t really explain everything right now about it but it is very much part of Japanese myth: just before she created “death” (in Japanese myth and Shinto, “death” did not exist until goddess Izanami first died), Izanami gave birth to several gods, one of which was Mizuhame. Mizuhame is also known as a water god who is the direct opposite of her brother: Kagu-tsuchi the god/kami of fire (who was also born just before Izanami died); and, thus, became the explanation as to why water is used to put fire out. BTW: as I explained prior, a “shintai” is an object of a shrine upon which a god/kami is contained within and worshiped in Shinto)
Tamamo: The turtle, which has transformed into a giant youkai, has now digested the shintai and it is part of its own body. The shintai is, how you say, a communication device for sending a god’s power into the present world…So having it within its body means that it has gained the power of a god infinitely…
Nube: The power of a god…it’s now a god-beast…
Tamamo: Yes.

Tamamo: Stop, Nueno-sensei. If that child alone dies, it will save the people of the town.
Nube: Silence! Why should one person die!
29.
Nube: Listen carefully, Tamamo! You can’t think in numbers as in “if this many dies, this many will be saved”. If there’s a person whose life is in danger in front of your eyes, then you save them unconsciously without thinking anything! Without reflecting on even your own life!
Nube: You can’t be calculating over there. You won’t be able to understand the human heart at all!

Nube: Understood!
31.
Nube: Uruaaa! (Haleruya you)
(TN: The “Haleruya, you” line Nube states here is most likely in reference to Hibino Haleruya, the main character of the WSJ series “Haleruya II: BOY”, which ran in the magazine from 1992 to 1999. As for why Nube would refer to the main character from another Jump manga, well strangely it makes sense because Hibino Haleruya…is a God. [well, the son of God] in the series he’s in, thus allowing for Nube to take out his anger at another “god character” on an actual god in this series)
SFX: Ga
SFX: Gaka
Nube: Gyaaa!!
Tamamo: No good…even with the Oni no Te, he hasn’t made even one scratch on the shell…Facing a god-beast, even Nueno-sensei’s spiritual power to become stronger infinitely can’t overtake it…
Nube: Haa haa
SFX: Suu--…
Nube: Whatever it takes…if I can’t win with my power now…Minako-sensei! I want to protect students. Please cooperate!

Nube: The power of the Oni is constantly suppressed by Minako-sensei from the inside…now I’ve stopped it. If I completely awaken the Oni…this…shell…
Tamamo: If you do that, your body will be usurped by the Oni. Stop it.
Tamamo: Nueno-sensei!!
33.
Tamamo: Ku…

Tamamo: Fu, I saw a chance for victory. Cooperating with you and defeating that thing over killing Shuichi-kun was judged as simple.
Nube: You saw a chance of victory? Haha…it was a sink-or-swim bet.
Shuichi: Nube! Thank, thank you.
Shuichi: Wait.
Shuichi: Thank you, Tamamo-sensei. I really thank you!
37.
Nube: How’s that? It’s like that whether one thanks or hundreds of thanks…I think it’s taste is constant but…
Tamamo: Foolish…I was just acting logically…

NUBE’S WEIRD FILES
#19: Mizuhame
Mizuhame is also written “Mi-zu-ha-me”. It is a variety of water god. In the myth of the creation of Japan, the urine that was released just before Izanami died became a god. (It has a tad dirty feeling) Its form at first was the form of a snake, but it seems like with the periods, it’s transformed into the image of a dragon. This water god is said to be at Ryuuguu Palace, which is at the bottom of the sea it administers.
(TN: A couple things:
1. The “Mizuhame”/ “Mi-zu-ha-me” part was mostly in conjunction with the kanji that can be used for defining its name. The typical “Mizuhame” reading uses the kanji that translates to “Net-Shaped Woman”; the alternate reading is “Beautiful-Metropolitan Wave Woman”
2. Ryuuguu Palace, also known as “Ryuuguu-jou”, is the undersea palace of dragon god Ryuujin, stated to be built of red-and-white coral or solid crystal. The residents of the castle include denizens of the sea. It is most famous for the infamous “three day” visit Urasahima Tarou made to it, which was 300 years in human time)
TN: Alright, what was the most disturbing thing in this chapter:
-A horrible god rampaging with it's head on the back of the shell of a multi-headed turtle
-Tamamo deciding to kill Shuichi just to save the town
-Nube and Tamamo being utterly absorbed by the power of the Oni.
-Shuichi in his underwear showing off like a model.
To me...it's obviously the last one. But...that has nothing to do with anything so lets move on.
Seriously, this chapter is an amazing, freaky and interesting one to further show the development more or less in Tamamo trying to figure out how to gain the power Nube gets all the time from saving everyone, albeit in a way that nearly killed Shuichi and at the same time destroyed a good chunk of Doumori in the process. (and made people believe in mutant turtles in the sewers...even if not teenage or ninja) He does seem to start understanding that sometimes you have to gain the favor of others in order to increase your power of combat, but he's still clueless on how to do so, thinking you may need to sacrifice one to save all. it is an interesting, if brutal strategy, but of course we all know what Nube's strategy is by now: why sacrifice one to save all if you can sacrifice no one and still save everyone? Nube believes in a feeling that everyone has to be saved no matter what and seems to find the past of least destruction or death in saving people as opposed to the one where everyone (or more) are somehow or another affected. While taking out Shuichi could have worked, Shuichi would have died...and whose to say the god would have been satiated by it? In many cases, a god who seems to be appeased just wants to run amuck until it's completely eased even if it ends up destroying everyone and everything in the process. While you can understand that maybe it was a bit like Kirin, Kirin is more merciful and decided to put it's trust in Katsuya due to his nature with the dog...while Mizuhame merely manipulated the turtle and just couldn't be reasoned with until it's Shintai was removed from the turtle's body. And it's really tough to save that Mizuhame had any connection at all with Shuichi, since it's Shintai was underwater all those years and it just so happened that it was Shuichi's turtle that swallowed it, mutating it to a form which it could cause massive chaos. Ultimately it was a tough way to satisfy it but somehow it probably felt like the only action that could work best: with the "god" being in the Shintai manipulating the turtle as opposed to the turtle being the god, all that had to be done was to remove it, thus breaking it's control over it. Though...using the Oni no Te to it's full power was sort of a difficult move to do so...but you saw what happened before so it was essentially the power of desperation to get through the shell and get the Shintai. As for it Tamamo learned anything...maybe. He still claims he is driven by logic as opposed to emotions and feelings, but the way he decided to help Nube save Shuichi and even try to sacrifice himself to the Oni to prevent Nube from being consumed near the end showed that even the calculating youko is starting to catch on. Now if only he can tell Kyouko the truth about her chest...then again with Miki and even Noro-chan being that large...its best to keep the lie up.
BTW: aren't you glad you're a reader and not a student at Doumori Elementary? (I love when the fourth-wall is broken in silly ways like that...)

Hiroshi: Don’t say that stinking thing~~
Kyouko: He’s come for love?
Tamamo: If I rescue the town…I will come to have the love of hundreds of people…and I can raise my spiritual power. With only one person now as my sacrifice…
SFX: Goki goki goki
Nube: Eh?
Nube: It…can’t be!
Shuichi: Ge

Nube: Wait! Tamamo!!
SFX: Gacha—n
Shuichi: Ta…Tamamo-sensei is a youkai!?
Tamamo: Yesl, I am four-hundred year old youko.
Tamamo: Look from here.
Tamamo: It is angry and has started to run amuck.
SFX: Gaga—n…dogagaga…

SFX: Dogaa | Zugagaga
Tamamo: How is this…this is all your fault. You will take personal responsibility and be killed by it. That will rescue the town.
Shuichi: ………………
Tamamo: Come out, main body.
SFX: Baki…baki…
26.
Mizuhame: I must clear my resentment!!
27.
SFX: Don!
Tamamo: Mu, are you running away?
Shuichi: I was bad. I’m sorry. But don’t kill the people of the town who aren’t related to this…If you hate me, kill just me…save the people of the town.
Tamamo: ………

Nube: In spite of always just giving retort, you’re being frank just at this moment, dummy!
Shuichi: Nube!
Nube: Ku…
SFX: Bachi

Nube: Take it, Oni no Te!
SFX: Ka
Nube: Chi…it immediatley regenerates…
Tamamo: It’s futile, Nueno-sensei: it’s gained the infinite spiritual power of a god! If we don’t destroy it’s shell and take the shintai within its body…
Minako: ………Understood: if this is for protecting students…
SFX: Paki…paki…
32.
Nube: Uaa
SFX: Baki baki
Tamamo: You idiot! What are you doing, Nueno-sensei!
Nube: I’ve released the seal of the Oni and awakened the Oni…
Nube: The power of the Oni is constantly suppressed by Minako-sensei from the inside…now I’ve stopped it. If I completely awaken the Oni…this…shell…
Tamamo: If you do that, your body will be usurped by the Oni. Stop it.
Tamamo: Nueno-sensei!!
33.
Tamamo: Ku…
SFX: Da
Nube: Wh…what are you…
Tamamo: I’m counter-currenting the Oni’s power with my body and lightening your burden.
Nube: Du…dummy, if you do that, then even you
SFX: Dokun dokun
Tamamo: I don’t mind! Let’s go, teacher!

Tamamo: Hinrou Kyomon Reidai Bunkyoku Rentei Bukyoku Hagun

Tamamo: Guaa…
Nube: Minako-sensei…please suppress the Oni.
SFX: Shuuuu…

Nube: I’m sorry, Tamamo, I was saved thanks to you…
Tamamo: Fu, I saw a chance for victory.
