Narrator: At first, it was a trivial matter.

Shizuka: Ah, we have one Shumai left over. Is someone not here?
(TN: “Shumai”/”Shu Mai” is a pork dumpling generally with seasoned ground pork, shrimp and mushrooms within it. Many times, the Japanese version does without the shrimp and merely makes it with pork)

Kaneda: Then, give us yours, teacher.
Hiroshi: There are exactly 3. We’ll be fine with one each.
Kaneda: We’ll make peace for that.
Nube: I…I didn’t say that. I say take it into the hall since your pride is built up.
SFX: Musha musha (munch munch)
Student: Nu…Nube…
Voices: You—guys—Gya—gya—
Narrator: Even from then on, those three brawled on whatever there was.
Nube: Um—well, it’s exactly one each of these killifish we’re using for inspection…
(TN: “Killifish” or “medaka” is in reference to “oryzias latipes”, a tiny fish usually seen in the rice paddies of central Asia and a notable fish of Japan)
Hiroshi: Isn’t your killifish exactly 1mm larger--?
Kaneda: You have the better color.
Katsuya: Yours seems tasty—
64.
Narrator: And day by day, it became worse.
(TN: The “worse” here is based on “hidoi”, stating that it became “serious”, but somehow I figured when translating that if we see these three going on like this day by day, then ‘it became worse’ worked better in terms of context)
Katsuya: I’m hitting.
Hiroshi: No, me.
Kaneda: Hurry and throw it!
Kyouko: Can I throw it?
Katsuya: That broom will be mine.
Hiroshi: You dummy—I always use it.
Kaneda: Shut it—I plan on sharing my life with that broom.
SFX: Dota bata dota
Kyouko: We’re filled with other brooms other than that one.
Noriko: Will this continue forever?
Miki: Nothing—we can do…shall I stop this?
Kyouko: Miki…don’t say something that—will pour oil on the fire…
Miki: Hey…how about I tell a story that was just fighting and that came to have a tragic result?
Hiroshi, Katsuya & Kaneda: Eh?
65.
Miki: This is a story of long ago…it appeared in Momoyamajin Yawa about the year 1200 A.D., but…on a new-moon night on the seashore of Kantou, three warriors called Kosanta, Matashige and Akugorou got into a verbal quarrel.
(TN: It’s tough to say if this is the same, but “Momoyamajin Yawa” shares the same reading as “Tousanjin Yawa”, also known as the translated name of “Night Stories of the People of Peach Mountain”. Written by artist Takehara Shunsen and published in 1841, it was seen as his followup to the works of Toriyama Sekien in the establishment and revelation of various ghosts, monsters and spirits of Japan, giving rise to many of the youkai known in Japanese culture. The tale of the youkai we will see in this chapter, incidentally, is in Tousanjin Yawa, thus it probably is that. BTW: “Kantou” is in reference to the section of central-eastern Honshu island which includes the city of Tokyo)
Miki: Within it, the quarrel escalated.
Miki: The trio mutually chopped off their heads and died.
Miki: Since then, the beach of the Kantou region on new-moon nights have said to emerge freshly-severed heads who fly about having become entangled and quarrel from the sea when the names of Kosanda, Matashige and Akugorou are called out. That is the famous tail of the youkai called Maikubi…
(TN: “Maikubi” is Japanese for “Revolving Heads” or “Revolving Necks”, dependant on your interpretation)
66.
Miki: Well? They continue to quarrel even when they die…it’s a story that causes shivers. If you don’t want to come to that result, then stop your quarrelling.
Hiroshi: Scary—
Katsuya: Heh, Hiroshi and Kaneda were scared too.
Hiroshi: What, I…I was saying that Miki’s face is scary.
Kaneda: Right—I’m not scared--!
Katsuya: Heh! Then, since tonight is the new moon, we’ll go to the sea and call out those names.
Hiroshi: Oh—we’ll do that.
Kaneda: You’re doing it too—you numbnuts.
(TN: Kaneda doesn’t literally call them “numbnuts” but “bokenasu” or “a senile eggplant”; among other things, eggplants are seen in Japanese culture as a symbol used for someone’s stupidity)
Miki: Waa! I poured oil on the fire!
Kyouko: You…did that on purpose…
Narrator: That night, Doumori Harbor
Katsuya: If…if you want to stop, then do so now.
Hiroshi: Wh…who will?
Kaneda: Kekeke, that fictional story.
67.
Hiroshi: Alright, will it work here?
Hiroshi: Kosanta—

Nube: Their quarrelling…even if you look at it looming, they’re ugly beings.
Katsuya: Ye…yes.
Narrator: And so…
Shizuka: Ah, one korokke is left…who wants it?
(TN: While usually referred to as “croquette” as in the French dish, a “korokke” is a deep-fried dish where meat, seafood or vegetables are mixed with a sauce or mashed potatoes, rolled in flour, eggs and breadcrumbs, then deep-fried)
Hiroshi: Hey, we’ll be impartial with this.
Katsuya: Well, Hiroshi-kun, yours is 0.01g bigger.
Kaneda: No no, shouldn’t we weigh it with 0.001g denominations?
Nube: Hey, this is irritating; quarrel about it outside.
Kyouko: Oh brother…

NUBE’S WEIRD FILES
#21: Maikubi
According to “Momoyamajin Yawa” around the years of Kangen (the years 1243-1247), there seemed to appear three heads that were flying around while breathing fire in the Manazuru Sea of Izu. Their heads were said to be those of the three warriors of Kosanta, Matashige and Akugorou, men who were in a quarrel and finally had a sword fight and died. Youkai who fly in the sky as just heads makes us recall “Hitouban”, who was introduced before, but the situation of Maikubi differs from Hitouban due to being the heads of humans who have already died. They’re a variety of revengeful ghosts from what’s called youkai.
TN: First of all, and this has to be said, is it just me or is it almost intentional we have an "all-boys" incident chapter just after the whole thing last time with Pawci and the girls? It just feels so off-setting to go from super-sexy Noriko...to Hiroshi, Katsuya and Kaneda killing each other. (though at least Shizuka gets a bit more panel time this time compared to Noro-chan...but even so she's still somewhat more minor)
With that said...I blame Miki (again). Yeah, there is way more to the chapter than that, but it's obvious she wanted to see more chaos and intentionally told those three about Maikubi just to make them go after it and bring everything to utter insanity once again. Sure things were tense prior to that, but it's like she knows of ways of driving a full chapter so that it doesn't just cut off mid-way. But aside from trouble-making busty blondes, the trio did pursue the ghost heads on their own, became possessed by doing what they had to, and for the most part merely aggravated their own hatred for one another until Nube was forced to get in the way to save them all. Besides, with the way those three nearly killed each other, it was either that or just watch as the three got more and more violent until they finished each other off. The chapter wasn't bad (since I did sort of like the aspect of the youkai being used to up the ante to it's conclusion)...but I think the key as to how to stop this was simple: keep Miki's big mouth shut.
